  • Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) was one of the most influential authors of the nineteenth century. His satirical essays and perceptive historical biographies caused him to be regarded for much of the Victorian period as a literary genius and eminent social philosopher. These volumes, first published in 1882, form the first part of Carlyle's official biography, describing his early life and literary work in Scotland. Carlyle's early career was spent as a teacher and part-time writer before his move to London in 1834. Written by Carlyle's close friend James Anthony Froude (1818–1894), this candid and controversial biography describes in vivid detail Carlyle's early literary influences and the sense of isolation he felt during his frustrating years as a schoolmaster. This revealing work broke traditional Victorian biographical conventions, and is considered a classic for its critical analysis of Carlyle's actions and character. Volume 2 covers the years 1828–1834.

  • Thomas Adolphus Trollope (1810–1892), historian and writer, was born into a literary family. His mother Frances was a travel writer and his brother Anthony the renowned novelist. Thomas led an eventful life, partly due to his family's precarious financial situation. His father was forced to flee to Bruges in 1834 to escape the debtor's prison and after her husband's death Fanny had to support her dependent children through her writing. She was aided by Thomas, who became her literary agent whilst pursuing his own writing. They moved to Italy in 1843 where Thomas published books concerning Italian history and entertained guests including George Eliot. His three-volume memoir, published after the death of his mother and his first wife Theodosia, contains an intimate account of his life. Volume 3 covers Trollope's observations on Italian political life and his marriage to his second wife Frances Ternan.

  • Clara Lucas Balfour (1808–1878) published Sketches of English Literature in 1852. The work surveys the development of English literature from the revival of letters in the fourteenth century to the literary controversies of the mid-nineteenth. Balfour places a special focus on the work of women writers. The first chapters consider the impact of the Renaissance and Reformation, the development of printing, and the publication of early vernacular Bibles on English literature; and examine the work of a number of Elizabethan writers, including Spenser and Shakespeare. The survey continues with evaluations of later writers including Milton, Dryden and a number of female poets. Later chapters analyse the influence of science on literature and the work concludes with an examination of nineteenth-century socially conscious literature. Balfour's lively and accessible style ensured that the work became a favourite of educated Victorians. It is a classic of popular nineteenth-century literature.

  • Mary Howitt (1799-1888) was one of the most prolific female writers and translators of her day, producing over a hundred titles in her lifetime. Held in high regard by her contemporaries, Howitt was best known for her Scandinavian interests, particularly for her translations of Frederika Bremer and Hans Christian Andersen. She also published numerous collections of poetry and stories, sometimes in partnership with her husband, the writer William Howitt. This two-volume autobiography was published posthumously in 1889, and was completed and edited by her daughter Margaret. Volume 2 focuses on the second half of Howitt's life, much of which was spent moving between England, Switzerland, Italy and Austria. It describes the death of two of her sons, her own and William's involvement with spiritualism, the death of her husband, and her eventual conversion to Catholicism.   • Dr Samuel Johnson (1709–84) is regarded as one of the outstanding figures of English literature, as a poet, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. This collected edition of his works - commissioned by the publisher within hours of Johnson's death, such was his celebrity - was published in 1787 in eleven volumes, edited by his literary executor, the musicologist Sir John Hawkins. Volume 3 contains the second part of his Lives of the Poets, his last major work. This was a commission to provide short accounts of over fifty poets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and it set a new standard for English literary biography. Although not all of the subjects have been regarded as eminent by posterity, and Johnson was criticised for brusque treatment of well-connected courtier poets now largely forgotten, the work was a great success.

Volume 1 (from 1834 to 1847) is introduced by Thomas, who recollects the events of the day in June 1834 when the first letter of the collection was written. Through Jane's correspondence with her family and friends, the reader will be entertained by her amusing descriptions of everyday life, and will gain a revealing insight into the highs and lows of her marriage.

  • F. D. Maurice (1805–72), the widely published theologian and Christian socialist, served as both Professor of English Literature at King's College, London, and Professor of Moral Philosophy at Cambridge. He was a founding member of the Cambridge Apostles and later founded the Working Men's College in London. Most of Maurice's publications derive from his sermons and lectures. This book serves as an instructional guide to students of literature. The title is taken from the first lecture, in which Maurice argues that books 'help us in knowing ourselves - the part of history of our land, the people we are continually meeting. And any book that does that is surely a friend.' Subsequent chapters include 'On words', 'Ancient history' and 'On Christian civilization' as well as those with a more literary focus, on Spenser, Milton and Burke. The work was published posthumously in 1873; this third edition appeared in 1880.

  • In 1849 Edward Bulwer Lytton published the popular novel The Caxtons, about an eccentric family who claimed descent from the printer William Caxton. Its hero, Pisistratus Caxton, was named as the author of two subsequent works, My Novel (1853) and What Will He Do With It? (1859), which were less successful. Bulwer Lytton was referring to those novels when he named this two-volume collection of literary and philosophical essays Caxtoniana, first published in 1863 and here reprinted from the 1864 edition. They were the result of his wide reading on scientific, philosophical and occult subjects which he made use of in several of his works, particularly the supernatural A Strange Story (1862). Many of the essays in Caxtoniana deal with morality and the artist, others with literary style, psychology, politics and readership. Lytton claimed that these subjects were expressed in the form of romance in the 'Caxton' novels.

  • Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was one of Germany's greatest intellectuals. He exerted enormous influence in many fields, through works ranging from literature, linguistics and philosophy to the theory of colours and the biological sciences. Goethe's poetry and plays inspired music and opera as well as later writers, and his thought influenced philosophers including Nietzsche and Jung. Darwin himself referred to Goethe's botanical studies. The British philosopher and literary critic G. H. Lewes (1817–1878) carried out research for this hugely successful two-volume biography during a trip to Berlin and Weimar in 1854. First published in 1855, and reissued here in the second, 1858 edition, it draws on personal letters and recollections provided by Goethe's closest friends, family and colleagues to construct a portrait of this polymath, and assess how his personal relationships shaped his legacy to the world. Volume 1 focuses on Goethe's early life until 1779.

  • George Eliot's first biographer, Mathilde Blind (1841–1896), was herself a poet and writer. Born in Germany, Blind moved with her family to London when she was still a child, and it was there that she established her literary reputation, writing poetry, essays, biographies, and a novel. In 1883, three years after Eliot's death, Blind's George Eliot was published. It is the first full-length biography of Eliot; while biographical articles about her had appeared in 1881, Blind's work corrected mistakes and enlarged the knowledge of Eliot's early life. Indeed, what sets her biography apart is the extent of private sources that Blind sought out, returning to Eliot's home and engaging with family and friends to accrue extensive information hitherto unknown to the public. Organized first around her personal life and latterly around her works, this biography will interest Eliot scholars, students of nineteenth-century criticism, and scholars of feminism.

  • Henry Crabb Robinson (1775–1867) was a lawyer, journalist and indefatigable diarist, who was acquainted with almost all the important figures in English and European cultural circles. His surviving writings amount to almost one hundred volumes, from which this selection was compiled in 1869. He studied at Jena where he became acquainted with Goethe and Schiller, and became foreign editor for The Times, despatching eyewitness reports on the Battle of Corunna. He travelled to Switzerland and Italy with Wordsworth, and his reminiscences of William Blake are an important source of information on that visionary. He attended Coleridge's public lectures, recording not only the content but anecdotes about the audiences. Other activities included helping found the Athenaeum Club and University College, London. The combination of anecdote and critical appraisal of the notables about whom he writes makes the diaries a valuable source for the culture of the nineteenth century.
