A Journey through England and Scotland to the Hebrides in 1784

  • The French geologist Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond (1741–1819) abandoned the legal profession to pursue studies in natural history, working at the museum of natural history in Paris and as royal commissioner of mines. His enthusiasm for geology took him in 1784 to Britain, to investigate the basalt formations on the Hebridean island of Staffa described by Sir Joseph Banks in Pennant's Tour in Scotland (also reissued in this series). His subsequent account was published in France in 1797, and first translated into English in an abridged form in 1814. This two-volume annotated translation by the well-known geologist Sir Archibald Geikie (1835–1924), prefaced by a short biography of Faujas, was published in 1907. The work is interesting for its social as well as its geological observations. Volume 2 describes the geology and natural history of the Hebrides. On his return journey, Faujas also visits the geological marvels of Derbyshire.

  • This interesting piece of social history, published in 1899, appears to have been the first non-fiction work by Teresa Praga (d.1920), the wife of a portrait painter and miniaturist, who also published novels. Her later output included books on cookery, housekeeping and dress, many with the emphasis on 'easy' (Easy French Sweets for English Cooks, for example). Like Jane Panton (several of whose books on lifestyle are also reissued in this series), Praga is writing for middle-class wives with not much money, and aspirations to gracious living. Appearances (subtitled How to Keep Them Up on a Limited Income) is presented as autobiography: how a newly married woman, on a very restricted income but used to - and liking - being 'waited on', manages a house. With detailed descriptions of finances, menus, the duties of servants, and other minutiae, this is a light-hearted account of late Victorian housekeeping.

  • A determined campaigner for women's rights, Jessie Boucherett (1825–1905) helped to draft Britain's first female suffrage petition in 1866 and founded the Englishwoman's Review in the same year. Originally published in 1863 and reissued here in its 1866 printing, the present work is her call to arms for young women of all classes to pursue their independence through education and employment. Emphasising the risk of trusting in men to provide for women, she urges her readers to support themselves, first through education and then through remunerative work. She includes examples of the various trades open to women and examines the cases of women who have not only succeeded but excelled in their occupations. The appendices give details of institutions where women could receive training. Reflecting and refining the Victorian concern with self-improvement, this work remains relevant to social historians and readers interested in the women's movement.

  • In the preface to this three-volume work of 1886, Edwin Hodder (1837–1904) writes that the seventh earl of Shaftesbury 'resisted every appeal that was made to him to allow his biography to be written'. In the end, he succumbed to the inevitable, and shared with Hodder, a professional author, both his archives and his memories. Anthony Ashley-Cooper (1801–85) was an evangelical Christian with a profound sense of the duty owed by the aristocracy to their country and to the less fortunate. He first came to prominence as the leader of the parliamentary campaign for shorter working hours, which led to the Factory Act of 1833. Entering the House of Lords on his father's death, he extended his activities, becoming the best-known philanthropist of his age. Volume 3 begins by considering Shaftesbury's religious views, and continues to describe his energetic and practical charitable activities until his death.

Soyer's Culinary Campaign

  • Perhaps the first celebrity chef, Alexis Soyer (1810–58) was a flamboyant, larger-than-life character who nonetheless took his profession very seriously. As the chef of the Reform Club, he modernised its kitchens, installing refrigerators and gas cookers. In 1851, during the Great Exhibition, he prepared spectacular (but financially ruinous) culinary extravaganzas at his restaurant, the Gastronomic Symposium of All Nations. In stark contrast, he organised soup kitchens during the Great Famine in Ireland and volunteered his services in the Crimea in 1855 to improve military catering. This work, first published in 1857, gives a vivid account of his efforts to prepare nutritious meals for the soldiers using a newly invented portable field stove, which remained in use until the Second World War. Also reissued in this series are Soyer's Gastronomic Regenerator (1846) and The Modern Housewife or Ménagère (1849).

  • Aged sixteen, Alexander Burnes (1805–41) took up a post in the Bombay army, and speedily learned both Hindustani and Persian. His skills led him to political work, and he himself proposed a covert expedition to Bukhara, to survey the country, but also to observe the expansionist activities of the Russians in central Asia. In 1832, he set off, with an army doctor, and two Indians as surveyor and secretary. They travelled in local dress and adopted whatever personas a situation required. Having reached Bukhara, they continued overland to the Caspian Sea, and then to Tehran, returning to Bombay by sea in 1833. This three-volume account of his adventures, published in 1834, was an instant bestseller. Volume 3 is an account of Burnes' earlier diplomatic mission up the Indus to Lahore in 1831. He continued his diplomatic activities in Afghanistan, but was murdered there by a mob in 1841.

A General View of the Criminal Law of England

  • The jurist Sir James Fitzjames Stephen (1829–94) published this work in 1863 to provide the intelligent layman with a general account of the workings and principles of English criminal law. He begins with a brief sketch of the development of that law from the Anglo-Saxon period onwards. He then covers the current law on criminal responsibility and the classification and definition of specific crimes, before turning to procedure and the rules of evidence. The book helped to establish Stephen's reputation and made possible his appointment as legal member of the Indian viceroy's council in succession to Henry Maine in 1869. Work on its revision for a second edition led Stephen into producing separate and authoritative digests of the law of evidence, criminal law, and criminal procedure, as well as his three-volume History of the Criminal Law of England, published in 1883 and also reissued in this series.

The Popular Guide to the International Exhibition of 1862

  • This helpful guide for visitors appeared in 1862 to accompany London's International Exhibition of that year. Held in South Kensington from May to November, the Exhibition showcased the progress made in a diverse range of crafts, trades and industries since the Great Exhibition of 1851. Over 6 million visitors came to view the wares of more than 28,000 exhibitors from Britain, her empire and beyond. Intended as a guided tour, the present work points out the most interesting exhibits along the way, touching on mining, pharmaceuticals, machinery, musical instruments, textiles, ceramics, furniture, clothing and jewellery, among much else. Containing a ground plan of the exhibition space as well as many contemporary advertisements, this publication remains an instructive resource for social and economic historians. Also relating to the 1862 Exhibition, both the official and illustrated catalogues of the industrial department are reissued in this series.

In Darkest England and the Way Out

  • This classic work in the literature of poverty was published in 1890 by William Booth (1829–1912), the founder of the Salvation Army. It was in fact mostly written by the crusading journalist W. T. Stead (referred to as an anonymous 'friend of the poor' in Booth's preface), but the practical ideas for relieving the poverty and squalor of late Victorian British cities are all Booth's own. Reworking the cliché of 'Darkest Africa', in the first part he describes the 'submerged tenth' of Darkest England - destitute and/or criminal - and goes on to suggest the way to 'Deliverance', which includes better housing, education and training for work, and the sending of the urban poor to 'colonies', both overseas and in the British countryside. These proposals had their critics, but drew wide attention to an appalling aspect of urban life of which the prosperous classes were barely aware.

The French Cook

  • Little is known of the early life of the French chef Louis Eustache Ude (d.1846). He claims in this work, first published in 1813 and reissued here in its 1827 eighth edition, to have had 'upwards of forty years practice and assiduous application to the study of his profession'. The book describes him as 'ci-devant cook to Louis XVI', but the greater part of his career was spent in England. His first English employer, the earl of Sefton, paid him the considerable sum of 300 guineas a year. After twenty years, Ude moved on, to the United Services Club and then to the duke of York's household, though he was most famous for his cooking at a notorious gambling club, Crockford's, between 1828 and 1838. Ude attempts to convey to professional English cooks 'a knowledge of the science of French cookery', which he naturally regards as superior to all others.

  • Sir James Fitzjames Stephen (1829–94) published this three-volume account of the English criminal law's historical development in 1883, four years after his appointment as a judge of the High Court. It is a revision and expansion of the second chapter in Stephen's 1863 General View (also reissued in this series). At first sight, it is ironic that the author of this classic of legal historical scholarship was himself a Benthamite who favoured and promoted the codification of the common law and worked on codes of criminal law and procedure for India and for England. Volume 3 covers the history of the criminal offences not covered in Volume 2 (murder and other offences against the person; theft and other property offences; and offences relating to trade and labour) and also covers the development of Indian criminal law and the main features of the Indian Penal Code of 1860 and Code of Criminal Procedure of 1882.

  • An American inventor and entrepreneur, Taliaferro Preston Shaffner (1818–81) collaborated with the Rev. W. Owen on this 'guided tour' of London's 1862 International Exhibition, showcasing Victorian achievements in technology and the arts. Described here are exhibits, originating from Britain, her empire and beyond, which include early washing machines and lawnmowers, as well as grand ideas for metropolitan drainage systems and a Channel Tunnel. The arts are also well covered, with descriptions of the latest fabrics, wallpapers, musical instruments, ceramics and photography. The authors also give background details of how the International Exhibition built upon the success of the Great Exhibition of 1851. Illustrated with sixty full-page steel engravings, this is a highly detailed guide to a very modern event. Also relating to the exhibition, Edward McDermott's Popular Guide and both the official and illustrated catalogues of the industrial department have been reissued in this series.

  • President of the Royal College of Physicians from 1844 until his death, John Ayrton Paris (1785–1856) wrote chiefly on medical topics, yet he also devoted time to the study of science and natural history. He served as physician to the Penzance Dispensary between 1813 and 1817, during which time he helped to establish what became the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall. First published anonymously in 1816, and reissued here in the second edition of 1824, this work explores the landscapes and natural history of the western part of Cornwall. Presented as a series of 'excursions', the guide takes in locations such as St Michael's Mount and the Lizard, also covering the rich mining districts at Redruth and St Just, and discussing local customs, the Cornish language and the health-giving climate. Several of Paris's medical and biographical works are also reissued in this series, including his life of the Cornish chemist Sir Humphry Davy.
