  • This article argues that a reliance on material texts tied to the concept of improvement—such as picturesque engravings, diagrams, and account books—pushed the early abolitionist movement toward a reforming, ameliorationist ethic that disavowed revolutionary action and immediate emancipation. Although the term improvement had broad social applicability by the late eighteenth century, its original connections to land management made it an especially important concept for the abolitionist debate. Integrating book history with studies of enslavement and abolition, I show how abolitionists’ use of visual-textual forms such as diagrams and account books created an emphasis on gradual improvement. In response, Black abolitionists both emphasized concepts other than improvement and presented their works in different material forms. Olaudah Equiano and Quobna Ottabah Cugoano adapted the genre of autobiography to demonstrate how their own ostensible improvements did not have the effects anticipated by the logic of white abolitionists, ultimately undercutting the usefulness of improvement as a guiding concept for abolitionism.

  • This paper summarizes key shifts in judicial decisions relating to public health powers during the pandemic and the implications of those decisions for public health practice. Then, it gives a preview and call for partnership in developing a legal framework for authority that guides public health to better activities, processes, and accountability in service of the public’s health.

  • Summary

    Most applied QCA, and thus applied SMMR, focus on claims of sufficiency. Some, though, also includes claims of necessity. In this chapter, it is explained how the SMMR principles and practices developed for claims of sufficiency also work for claims of necessity. It starts with the simplest possible, and also most often encountered, form of necessity claims: that of a single condition being necessary for the outcome. After this, disjunctive and then conjunctive necessity claims are discussed. Learning goals: - Understand that only minor adjustments are needed to SMMR types of cases, forms of single-case and comparative designs, principles, formulas, and ranks when the cross-case solution postulates a necessary condition - Consolidate the knowledge of SMMR principles, types of cases, formulas, and ranks - Further practice the use of the smmr() function and the interpretation of its output

  • In this paper, we study the existence of solutions for a critical time–harmonic Maxwell equation in nonlocal media

    where $\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^{3}$ is a bounded domain, either convex or with $\mathcal {C}^{1,1}$ boundary, $\nu$ is the exterior normal, $\lambda <0$ is a real parameter, $2^{\ast }_{\alpha }=3+\alpha$ with $0<\alpha <3$ is the upper critical exponent due to the Hardy–Littlewood–Sobolev inequality. By introducing some suitable Coulomb spaces involving curl operator $W^{\alpha,2^{\ast }_{\alpha }}_{0}(\mathrm {curl};\Omega )$, we are able to obtain the ground state solutions of the curl–curl equation via the method of constraining Nehari–Pankov manifold. Correspondingly, some sharp constants of the Sobolev-like inequalities with curl operator are obtained by a nonlocal version of the concentration–compactness principle.

  • The crystal structure of ractopamine hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Ractopamine hydrochloride crystallizes in space group Pbca (#61) with a = 38.5871(49), b = 10.7691(3), c = 8.4003(2) Å, V = 3490.75(41) Å3, and Z = 8. The ractopamine cation contains two chiral centers, and the sample consists of a mixture of the S,S/R,R/S,R and R,S forms. Models for the two diastereomers S,S and S,R were refined, and yielded equivalent residuals, but the S,R form is significantly lower in energy. The crystal structure consists of layers of molecules parallel to the bc-plane. In each structure one of the H atoms on the protonated N atom acts as a donor in a strong discrete N–H⋯Cl hydrogen bond. Hydroxyl groups act as donors in O–H⋯Cl and O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Both the classical and C–H⋯Cl and C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds differ between the forms, helping to explain the large microstrain observed for the sample. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).
