Recent ALMA observations detected protostellar outflows in 70-μm dark infrared dark clouds (IRDCs). These sources are candidates for the initial stages of high-mass star formation. We launched a new survey for free-free emission from outflow shocks using the Yamaguchi Interferometer (YI) at 8 GHz. We aim to catalog “proto-high-mass protostar” candidates that are still in the low to intermediate-mass phase. We selected starless-like clumps without any 70-μm point source from Traficante et al. (2015). We currently detected 82 sources from 167 clumps. 37 of them are fainter than 20 mJy (down to a few mJy). They tend to associate with colder and denser clumps that are suitable for star formation. This fact suggests that, at least, some of them trace star-formation activities. The highest-density clumps are, in fact, associated with several masers and molecular outflows. Furthermore, some of them have already shown a signature of ongoing cluster formation.

The 6.7 GHz methanol maser emitted by a high-mass star forming region G33.641-0.228 is known to exhibit fast flux density variability on timescales of less than one day. The mechanism of this variability, called burst, has not been known. We observed the circular polarization of this maser. As a result, we found that only the spectral components representing burst exhibit strong circular polarization exceeding 10%. This suggests that the two phenomena of the burst and circular polarization are related to each other.

We report the detections of NH3(3,3) and 25 GHz and 278.3 GHz class I CH3OH maser emission associated with the outflow of the Extended Green Object G19.01–0.03 in sub-arcsecond resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations. For masers associated with the outer outflow lobes (> 12.5 ″ from the central massive young stellar object; MYSO), the spatial distribution of the NH3(3,3) masers is statistically indistinguishable from that of previously known 44 GHz Class I CH3OH masers, strengthening the connection of NH3(3,3) masers to outflow shocks. In sub-arcsecond resolution VLA observations, we resolve the 6.7 GHz Class II CH3OH maser emission towards the MYSO into a partial, inclined ring, with a velocity gradient consistent with the rotationally supported circumstellar disc traced by thermal gas emission.

We report on a direct comparison of VLBI maser data and ALMA thermal-emission data for the high-mass protostar G353.273+0.641. We detected a gravitationally-unstable disk by dust and a high-velocity jet traced by a thermal CO line by ALMA long-baselines (LB). 6.7 GHz CH3OH masers trace infalling streamlines inside the disk. The innermost maser ring indicates another compact accretion disk of 30 au. Such a nested system could be caused by angular momentum transfer by the spiral arms. 22 GHz H2O masers trace the jet-accelerating region, which are directly connecting the CO jet and the protostar. The recurrent maser flares imply episodic jet ejections per 1–2 yr, while typical separation of CO knots indicates a variation of outflow rate per 100 yr. Our study demonstrates that VLBI maser observations are still a powerful tool to explore detailed structures nearby high-mass protostars by combining ALMA LB.

Understanding how, when and where complex organic and potentially prebiotic molecules are formed is a fundamental goal of astrochemistry. Since its beginning the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has demonstrated its capabilities for studies of the chemistry of solar-type stars. Its high sensitivity and fine spectral and angular resolution makes it possible to study the chemistry of young stars on Solar System scales. We here present an unbiased spectral survey, Protostellar Interferometric Line Survey (PILS), of the astrochemical template source and Class 0 protostellar binary IRAS 16293-2422 using ALMA. The high quality ALMA data have allowed us to detect a wealth of species previously undetected toward solar-type protostars as well as the interstellar medium in general. Also, the data show the presence of numerous rare isotopologues of complex organic molecules and other species: the exact measurements of the abundances of the complex organic molecules and their isotopologues shed new light onto the formation of these species and provide a chemical link between the embedded protostellar stages and the early Solar System.

We present observations of massive star-forming regions selected from the IRAS Point Source Catalog. The observations were made with the Very Large Array and the Large Millimeter Telescope to search for Class I methanol masers. We made interferometric observations of 125 massive star-forming regions in the 44 GHz methanol maser transition; 53 of the 125 fields showed emission. The data allow us to demonstrate associations, at arcsecond precision, of the Class I maser emission with outflows, HII regions and shocks traced by 4.5 μm emission. We made single-dish observations toward 38 of the 53 regions with 44 GHz masers detected to search for the methanol transitions at 84.5, 95.1, 96.7, 107.0, and 108.8 GHz. We find detection rates of 74, 55, 100, 3, and 45%, respectively. We used a wide-band receiver which revealed many other spectral lines that are common in star-forming regions.

Disc fragmentation provides an important mechanism for producing low-mass stars in prestellar cores. Here, we describe smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations which show how populations of prestellar cores evolve into stars. We find the observed masses and multiplicities of stars can be recovered under certain conditions.

First, protostellar feedback from a star must be episodic. The continuous accretion of disc material on to a central protostar results in local temperatures which are too high for disc fragmentation. If, however, the accretion occurs in intense outbursts, separated by a downtime of ~ 104 yr, gravitational instabilities can develop and the disc can fragment.

Second, a significant amount of the cores’ internal kinetic energy should be in solenoidal turbulent modes. Cores with less than a third of their kinetic energy in solenoidal modes have insufficient angular momentum to form fragmenting discs. In the absence of discs, cores can fragment but results in a top-heavy distribution of masses with very few low-mass objects.
