In this paper we examine two aspects of extreme events: their calculation and their communication. In relation to calculation, there are two types of extreme events that are considered.

The first is the extent to which extreme events in two or more variables occur together. This can be gauged by using measures of tail association. Higher levels of tail association are useful for highlighting the extent to which there are concentrations of risk. We investigate the range of approaches used to measure tail association and propose a pragmatic alternative, the coefficient of finite tail dependence.

The second type of extreme event arises from combinations of losses from a series of risks that together result in total losses exceeding a particular level. This is measured using ruin lines or, in higher dimensions, planes and hyperplanes. The probability of ruin and the economic cost of ruin are considered here. In this context, it is important to consider what the term “loss” actually means, and whether it is in relation to a current set of exposures or a potential strategy.

The communication of extreme events is discussed not just in terms of the numbers that can be used, but in terms of the graphical methods that can be used to aggregate information on a range of risk combinations. This involves communicating not just the level of risk but also the importance of the risk considered.

This paper reviews Panjer's recursion formula for evaluation of compound distributions and illustrates how it can be applied to life and general insurance problems.

The probability of ruin in continuous and finite time is numerically evaluated in a classical risk process where the premium can be updated according to credibility models and therefore change from year to year. A major consideration in the development of this approach is that it should be easily applicable to large portfolios. Our method uses as a first tool the model developed by Afonso et al. (2009), which is quite flexible and allows premiums to change annually. We extend that model by introducing a credibility approach to experience rating.

We consider a portfolio of risks which satisfy the assumptions of the Bühlmann (1967, 1969) or Bühlmann and Straub (1970) credibility models. We compute finite time ruin probabilities for different scenarios and compare with those when a fixed premium is considered.

The classical models in risk theory consider a single type of claim. In the insurance business, however, several business lines with separate claim arrival processes appear naturally, and the individual claim processes may not be independent. We introduce a new class of models for such situations, where the underlying counting process is a multivariate continuous-time Markov chain of pure-birth type and the dependency of the components arises from the fact that the birth rate for a specific claim type may depend on the number of claims in the other component processes. Under certain conditions, we obtain a fluid limit, i.e. a functional law of large numbers for these processes. We also investigate the consequences of such results for questions of interest in insurance applications. Several specific subclasses of the general model are discussed in detail and the Cramér asymptotics of the ruin probabilities are derived in particular cases.

We consider risk processes that locally behave like Brownian motion with some drift and variance, these both depending on an underlying Markov chain that is also used to generate the claims arrival process. Thus, claims arrive according to a renewal process with waiting times of phase type. Positive claims (downward jumps) are always possible but negative claims (upward jumps) are also allowed. The claims are assumed to form an independent, identically distributed sequence, independent of everything else. As main results, the joint Laplace transform of the time to ruin and the undershoot at ruin, as well as the probability of ruin, are explicitly determined under the assumption that the Laplace transform of the positive claims is a rational function. Both the joint Laplace transform and the ruin probability are decomposed according to the type of ruin: ruin by jump or ruin by continuity. The methods used involve finding certain martingales by first finding partial eigenfunctions for the generator of the Markov process composed of the risk process and the underlying Markov chain. We also use certain results from complex function theory as important tools.

In this paper we extend the work of Reinhard and Snoussi (2000) by developing a recursive system for finding the distribution of the surplus prior to ruin in a discrete semi-Markov risk model.

There is a duality between the surplus process of classical risk theory and the single-server queue. It follows that the probability of ruin can be retrieved from a single sample path of the waiting time process of the single-server queue. In this paper, premiums are allowed to vary. It has been shown that the stationary distribution of a corresponding storage process is equal to the survival probability (with variable premiums). Thus by simulation of the corresponding storage process, the probability of ruin can be obtained. The special cases where the surplus earns interest and the premiums are charged by layers are considered and illustrated numerically.

In this paper we present a stable recursive algorithm for the calculation of the probability of ultimate ruin in the classical risk model. We also present stable recursive algorithms for the calculation of the joint and marginal distributions of the surplus prior to ruin and the severity of ruin. In addition we present bounds for these distributions.

Based on recurrence equation theory and relative error (rather than absolute error) analysis, the concept and criterion for the stability of a recurrence equation are clarified. A family of recursions, called congruent recursions, is proved to be strongly stable in evaluating its non-negative solutions. A type of strongly unstable recursion is identified. The recursive formula discussed by Panjer (1981) is proved to be strongly stable in evaluating the compound Poisson and the compound Negative Binomial (including Geometric) distributions. For the compound Binomial distribution, the recursion is shown to be unstable. A simple method to cope with this instability is proposed. Many other recursions are reviewed. Illustrative numerical examples are given.

In this paper we present algorithms to calculate the probability and severity of ruin in both finite and infinite time for a discrete time risk model. We show how the algorithms can be applied to give approximate values for the same quantities in the classical continuous time risk model.

An alternative expression for the coefficients in the ruin probability for the classical ruin model with translated combination of exponential claims is derived.

This estimator is then used to derive the asymptotic behaviour of φ (y, τ n, Ln(τ n), L′n(τ n), · ··). We include five examples, some of which are taken from insurance mathematics.

The first method, essentially due to GOOVAERTS and DE VYLDER, uses the connection between the probability of ruin and the maximal aggregate loss random variable, and the fact that the latter has a compound geometric distribution. For the second method, the claim amount distribution is supposed to be a combination of exponential or translated exponential distributions. Then the probability of ruin can be calculated in a transparent fashion; the main problem is to determine the nontrivial roots of the equation that defines the adjustment coefficient. For the third method one observes that the probability, of ruin is related to the stationary distribution of a certain associated process. Thus it can be determined by a single simulation of the latter. For the second and third methods the assumption of only proper (positive) claims is not needed.

It is shown how the stationary distributions of a bonus–malus system can be computed recursively. It is further shown that there is an intrinsic relationship between such a stationary distribution and the probability of ruin in the risk-theoretical model. The recursive algorithm is applied to the Swiss bonus–malus system for automobile third-party liability and can be used to evaluate ruin probabilities.
