Alkaline lamprophyre intrusives from the western Deccan Traps (Murud-Janjira, south of Bombay) host rare lithospheric xenoliths and megacrysts. The xenolith suite consists of clinopyroxenites and granulites which show eclogitic affinities. The former have transitional (porphyroclastic to equigranular) textures whereas the latter are porphyroclastic, xenomorphic to meta-igneous. The textural features provide evidence of ductile-brittle deformation. The protoliths of the pyroxenite and granulite xenoliths were formed as cumulates of alkaline and sub-alkaline magmas respectively.

Mineral chemistry and geochemical data for the xenoliths bear testimony to the metasomatized nature of the deep crust. The xenolith data coupled with the geophysical evidence indicate that the lower crust beneath Murud-Janjira is dominated by mafic granulites and pyroxenites. The latter have under- and intra-plated the continental crust beneath the region.

Mafic lamprophyre dykes in northern England were emplaced soon after the final closure of the Iapetus Ocean at the end of the Caledonian orogeny. High Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratios and Cr and Ni contents are consistent with equilibrium with mantle peridotite. Incompatible trace element abundances suggest that the mantle sources were metasomatized prior to the melting events. Three components are recognized in the lamprophyre chemistry: (i) a depleted mantle source, taken to be that overlying the subducting lithosphere; (ii) a H2O-rich subduction zone component, related to the dehydration of the subducting oceanic crust; and (iii) a CO2-rich phase thought to result from the degassing of the mantle after ocean closure. This multi-component origin may be applicable to other lamprophyres of calc-alkaline affinity.

Amphiboles in dykes from the dominantly silica-undersaturated Monteregian series range from pargasitic megacrysts and xenocrysts to kaersutitic, pargasitic and hastingsitic phenocrysts, groundmass prisms and reaction rims. Amphiboles in dykes and plutons from the silica-oversaturated White Mountain Magma Series range from kaersutite, through hornblende, hastingsite and edenite, to sodic-calcic and sodic varieties. This contrast between the amphiboles from the two series is probably a reflection of differing melt silica activity and is a useful petrologic discriminant. In most cases, pargasitic amphibole megacrysts from Monteregian monchiquites reflect the Mg numbers of their host rocks and are considered cognate. The megacrysts are lower in Ti and higher in Mg and Al than their phenocryst mantles and rims. This is probably a result of higher pressures of formation.

Many late Mesozoic lamprophyre dykes occur in the Taihang Mountains (north China). These lamprophyres are rich in large ion lithophile elements (e.g. Rb, Sr, Ba and K) and light REE, and have highly differentiated REE patterns. They show large but regular variations in chemical and Nd–Sr isotopic compositions. All these suggest that the lamprophyres were produced from differentiation of a parental magma, coupled with contamination by lower crust. The parental magma was derived from melting of a long-term enriched sub-continental lithospheric mantle source as is indicated by the highly enriched isotopic signatures of the lamprophyres. Mantle enrichment in the area was probably produced by interaction of volatile-rich melts released from the asthenosphere with the above lithosphere in middle Proterozoic times.

Potassium (K)-rich volcanic rocks occur within Permian sedimentary rocks in SW England and are approximately contemporaneous with the emplacement of the Cornubian granite batholith. The volcanic rocks have chemical characteristics of subduction-related magmas and may have been derived by small amounts of partial melting of heterogeneous large-ion lithophile (LIL) enriched mantle with the assemblage olivine–pyroxene–garnet–phlogopite–titanate. The LIL enrichment may have occurred during shallow or oblique subduction of oceanic lithosphere below SW England during the Devonian and Carboniferous. Such LIL-enriched mantle may have contributed some components to the Cornubian granite batholith.
