We present U–Pb dates from peridotitic pyrope-rich garnet from four mantle xenoliths entrained in a kimberlite from Bultfontein, South Africa. Garnet dates magmatic emplacement due to the high mantle residence temperatures of the source material prior to eruption, which were most likely above the closure temperature for the pyrope U–Pb system. We determine a U–Pb date of 84.0 ± 8.1 Ma for the emplacement of the Bultfontein kimberlite from garnet in our four xenolith samples. The date reproduces previous dates obtained from other mineral-isotope systems (chiefly Rb–Sr in phlogopite). Garnet can be dated despite extremely low concentrations of U (median ∼0.05 μg/g), because concentrations of common Pb are often low or non-detectable. This means that sub-concordant garnets can be dated with moderate precision using very large laser-ablation spots (130 μm) measured by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (LA-Q-ICP-MS). Our strategy demonstrates successful U–Pb dating of a U-poor mineral due to high initial ratios of U to common Pb in some grains, and the wide spread of isotopic compositions of grains on a concordia diagram. In addition, the analytical protocol is not complex and uses widely available analytical methods and strategies. This new methodology has some advantages and disadvantages for dating kimberlite emplacement versus established methods (U-based decay systems in perovskite and zircon, or Rb- or K-based systems in phlogopite). However, this method has unique promise for its potential application to detrital diamond prospecting and, more speculatively, to the dating of pyrope inclusions in diamond.

Subduction-related kimberlite-borne eclogite xenoliths of the Precambrian age may provide significant information about the evolution and recycling of a subducting crust as exhumed/orogenic eclogites of the pre-Mesoproterozoic time-frame are globally rare. In this paper, we report a kimberlite-borne eclogite xenolith from the diamondiferous Kalyandurg kimberlite cluster of the Eastern Dharwar Craton, India, which contains a plethora of ultra-high-pressure minerals such as coesite, majoritic garnet, and supersilicic K-rich omphacite. The presence of these ultra-high-pressure minerals is confirmed by in situ X-ray diffractometry, laser Raman spectra and electron probe microanalysis. The presence of coesite undisputedly pinpoints a subduction origin for the eclogite at ∼2.8 GPa pressure, which corresponds to ∼100 km depth. The geothermobarometric estimations involving garnet–omphacite–kyanite–coesite reveal that such an eclogitic assemblage equilibrated at ∼5–8 GPa (∼175–280 km) pressure during ultra-deep subduction. The textural relationship between omphacite, coarse-grained garnet and majoritic garnet coupled with the laser Raman spectra and geobarometric estimations obtained from the majoritic garnet demonstrate that the majoritic garnet formed at ∼8–19 GPa (∼280–660 km) owing to disassociation of omphacite and coarse-grained garnet to majoritic garnet during increment of pressure up to the mantle transition zone. Thus, the mineralogical and geothermobarometric data suggest that the studied eclogite possibly travelled down to the mantle transition zone before it was rapidly carried up by a pre-Mesoproterozoic mantle plume, and subsequently entrained as a xenolith by the Mesoproterozoic (∼1.1 Ga) kimberlite.

Two new mineral species of the crichtonite group: botuobinskite, ideally SrFe2+(Ti4+12Cr3+6)Mg2[O36(OH)2] and mirnyite, ideally SrZr(Ti4+12Cr3+6)Mg2O38, occur as inclusions in mantle-derived Cr-pyrope xenocrysts from the Internatsionalnaya kimberlite pipe, Mirny field, Siberian craton. Botuobinskite forms needle- and blade-like acicular crystals up to 1 mm in length and up to 30 μm in diameter, a large platy inclusion (700 × 700 × 80 μm) and roughly isometric grains (up to 80 μm). Mirnyite occurs as needle-and blade-like elongated inclusions (up to 1 mm). Both minerals are jet-black, opaque and exhibit a metallic lustre. In plane-polarised reflected light, botuobinskite and mirnyite are greyish-white with a weak brownish tint. Between crossed polars, the new species show distinct anisotropy in shades of bluish grey to greenish-brown. Neither bireflectance nor pleochroism is observed. Calculated densities for botuobinskite and mirnyite are 4.3582(5) and 4.3867(3) gm/cm3, respectively. The crystal structures of botuobinskite and mirnyite have been refined (R = 0.0316 and 0.0285, respectively) from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The minerals are trigonal, crystallise in the space group R$\bar{3}$ (No. 148) and are isostructural with other members of the crichtonite group. The unit cell parameters are a = 10.3644(8) Å, c = 20.6588(11) Å and V = 1921.9(2) Å3 for botuobinskite and a = 10.3734(8) Å, c = 20.6910 (12) Å and V = 1928.2(2) Å3 for mirnyite, with Z = 3 for both. The Raman spectra of the minerals show strong peaks at 133, 313 and 711 cm–1. Infrared spectroscopy data for botuobinskite indicates H–O stretching of the hydroxyl groups. Botuobinskite and mirnyite have been approved by the IMA–CNMNC under the numbers 2018-143a and 2018-144a, respectively. Botuobinskite and mirnyite are named after the Botuobinskaya exploration expedition and Mirny town, respectively. The minerals may be considered as crystal-chemical analogues of other crichtonite-group species occurring in the lithospheric mantle (i.e. loveringite, lindsleyite and mathiasite). Both species commonly occur in intimate association with Cr-pyrope as well as other peridotitic minerals and exert an important control on the partitioning of incompatible elements during mantle metasomatism.

Very few zircon-bearing, kimberlite-hosted mantle eclogite xenoliths have been identified to date; however, the zircon they contain is crucial for our understanding of subcratonic lithospheric mantle evolution and eclogite genesis. In this study, we constrain the characteristics of zircon from mantle eclogite xenoliths based on existing mineralogical and geochemical data from zircons from different geological settings, and on the inferred origin of mantle eclogites. Given the likely origin and subsequent evolution of mantle eclogites, we infer that the xenoliths can contain zircons with magmatic, metamorphic and xenogenic (i.e. kimberlitic zircon) origins. Magmatic zircon can be inherited from low-pressure mafic oceanic crust precursors, or might form during direct crystallization of eclogites from primary mantle-derived melts at mantle pressures. Metamorphic zircon within mantle eclogites has a number of possible origins, ranging from low-pressure hydrothermal alteration of oceanic crustal protoliths to metasomatism related to kimberlite magmatism. This study outlines a possible approach for the identification of inherited magmatic zircon within subduction-related mantle eclogites as well as xenogenic kimberlitic zircon within all types of mantle eclogites. We demonstrate this approach using zircon grains from kimberlite-hosted eclogite xenoliths from the Kasai Craton, which reveals that most, if not all, of these zircons were most likely incorporated as a result of laboratory-based contamination.

In situ U–Pb and Hf analyses were used for crustal zircon xenocrysts from Triassic kimberlites exposed in the Rangnim Massif of North Korea to identify components of the basement hidden in the deep crust of the Rangnim Massif and to clarify the crustal evolution of the massif. The U–Pb age spectrum of the zircons has a prominent population at 1.9–1.8 Ga and a lack of Archaean ages. The data indicate that the deep crust and basement beneath the Rangnim Massif are predominantly of Palaeoproterozoic age, consistent with the ages of widely exposed Palaeoproterozoic granitic rocks. In situ zircon Hf isotope data show that most of the Palaeoproterozoic zircon xenocrysts have negative ϵHf(t) values (−9.7 to +0.7) with an average Hf model age of 2.86 ± 0.02 Ga (2σ), which suggests that the Palaeoproterozoic basement was not juvenile but derived from the reworking of Archaean rocks. Considering the existence of Archaean remanent material in the Rangnim Massif and their juvenile features, a strong crustal reworking event is indicated at 1.9–1.8 Ga, during which time the pre-existing Archaean basement was exhausted and replaced by a newly formed Palaeoproterozoic basement. These features suggest that the Rangnim Massif constitutes the eastern extension of the Palaeoproterozoic Liao–Ji Belt of the North China Craton instead of the Archaean Liaonan Block as previously thought. A huge Palaeoproterozoic orogen may exist in the eastern margin of the Sino-Korean Craton.

Perovskite compositions are used to investigate the relationship between the minor components (i.e. LREE, Fe3+ and Nb) and the oxygen fugacity (fo2) of perovskite in four different kimberlite lithofacies from the Dutoitspan pipe, Kimberley, South Africa, which range from diamondiferous to barren. The perovskite textures and chemical variations provide insight into magmatic and eruptive processes. Some crystals display cores with rims separated by a sharp boundary. The cores contain larger Na and LREE contents relative to the rims, which show a large increase in Fe3+ and Al. The mid-grade and barren kimberlites have bi-modal cores, reflected in the mineral chemistry, signifying multiple batches of magma and magma mixing. The fo2 of the magma is determined by an Fe-Nb oxygen barometer. The most diamondiferous kimberlite has the greatest Fe3+ content and highest fo2 (NNO –3.6 to –1.1). The kimberlite containing large diamonds has the smallest Fe3+ content and lowest fo2 (NNO –5.2 to –3.0). The barren and mid-grade kimberlites display a wide range of fo2,(NNO –5.3 to –1.5) as a result of perovskites forming in different melts and subsequently mixing together. Chemical and petrological evidence suggests that the volatile content, degassing, decompression and rate of crystallization can influence the rate at which the magma is erupted. One possibility is that the most oxidized magma, containing the highest volatile content, is therefore erupted much more rapidly, preserving diamond as a consequence.

Recognition of widespread carbonate volcanism in central Spain has led to another case in France, of similar age (23–0 Ma) but with entirely new features. More than 100 new carbonate volcanoes are indicated already, adding a wholly unexpected dimension to this form of activity. Eruptions form layers, mostly of glassy nephelinite fragments in a dolomitic matrix, but some layers are largely dolomite. Major new findings are phenocrysts of dolomite, magnesite and calcite in silicate glass, and spectacular dolomite-nephelinite melt immiscibility, neither recorded previously. Most volcanic carbonatites are Ca rich, and dolomite is rare. The Limagne dolomites share links with those in Spain and Zambia, with chromite a hallmark in all three. Limagne is exceptional in being the first case where dolomite has erupted with co-genetic silicate melt. Mantle debris and magnesite indicate a source within ∼ 100–150 km. Chromite in the dolomite globules, and in the enclosing silicate glass, is similar to that in high-temperature kimberlites, indicating immiscibility in the deep mantle. Recognition of two large, previously undetected provinces of carbonate volcanism in Europe, where there has been active research for >200 y, must lead to the inference that similar cases may await discovery on other continents.

Olivines from igneous rocks generally have low calcium contents. However, olivines crystallized from strongly silica-undersaturated magmas occasionally contain large amounts of kirschsteinite (Ki" CaFeSiO4) and monticellite (Mo: CaMgSiO4) components. The purpose of this note is to report the first natural occurrence of kirschsteinite crystals that have lamite (La: CazSiO4) in the mineralogical norm.

Zircon frequently occurs as a minor mineral in kimberlites, and is recognised as a member of a suite of mantle-derived megacryst minerals. Cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy and laser ablation ICPMS analysis were used to study the internal structure and chemical composition of zircon crystals from southern African kimberlites. Zoning revealed by CL ranges from fine oscillatory to broad homogeneous cores and overgrowths. The ICPMS data show that kimberlite zircons have distinctive trace element contents, with well defined ranges for REE, Y, U, Th, P and some other trace elements. Both low REE contents (ΣREE < 50 ppm), and distinctive chondrite-normalised REE patterns with low and flat HREE are characteristic of kimberlite zircons. Samples or zones with yellow CL have higher Th, U, Y, and REE than those with blue-violet CL. Variations in the concentrations of a range of trace elements lead to different amounts of lattice defects, creating the possibility for different levels of direct excitation of luminescence centres, and therefore different CL colours. The distinctive CL and compositional features described here can rapidly identify kimberlite zircons in prospecting samples taken during exploration for kimberlite bodies.

In hypabyssal and crater-facies kimberlites of the Lac de Gras kimberlite field, perovskite occurs as reaction-induced rims on earlier-crystallized Ti-bearing minerals (magnesian ilmenite and priderite), inclusions in atoll spinels and discrete crystals in a serpentine-calcite mesostasis. The mineral is associated with spinels, apatite, monticellite, phlogopite, baryte, Fe-Ni sulphides, ilmenite, diopside and zircon. Uncommon accessory phases found in an assemblage with perovskite include titanite, monazite- (Ce), witherite, strontium-apatite, khibinskite, djerfisherite, wollastonite, pectolite, suolunite, hydroxyapophyllite and bultfonteinite. Three types of perovskite can be distinguished on the basis of composition: (I) REE-Nb-Al-poor perovskite with relatively high Sr and K contents (up to 2.2 and 0.6 wt.% oxides, respectively) occurring as mantles on priderite and inclusions in atoll spinels; (II) perovskite with elevated Al, Fe, Nb and LREE (up to 1.4, 8.3, 9.1 and 17.0 wt.% oxides, respectively) found as discrete crystals and rims on macrocrystic ilmenite; (III) perovskite significantly enriched in Na, Sr, Nb and LREE (up to 3.3, 3.4, 13.0 and 22.6 wt.% oxides, respectively) found as rims on perovskite I and II. The overwhelming majority of perovskite is represented by discrete crystals of type II. In some occurrences, this type of perovskite also has high Th contents (up to 5.5 wt.% ThO2) and Zr contents (up to 3.7 wt.% ZrO2). Textural evidence indicates that perovskite shows an overall evolutionary trend from the most primitive type I towards type III showing the highest Na, Nb and LREE contents. Perovskite of type I probably crystallized under relatively high pressures prior to the precipitation of MUM spinels. Perovskite II crystallized after magnesiochromite, pleonaste and MUM (magnesian ulvöspinel-magnetite) spinels, under increasing fO2. The most compositionally evolved type III formed during near-solidus re-equilibration of the earlier-crystallized perovskite. The compositional variation of the Lac de Gras perovskite can be adequately characterized in terms of five major end-members: CaTiO3 (perovskite), CeFeO3, NaNbO3 (lueshite), Na0.5LREE0.5TiO3 (loparite), and CaFe0.5Nb0.5O3 (latrappite).

Ion microprobe analysis ofperovskite from kimberlites and alnöites permits the accurate determination of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Er and Yb at the part per million level. Other rare earth elements (REE) are subject to interferences in the mass spectrum caused by matrix-derived molecular ions and cannot easily be determined with comparable precision. Chondrite-normalized plots of the ion probe REE data are smooth curves, confirming the superiority of this technique over electron microprobe methods at the levels of REE abundance found in these perovskites. The perovskites analysed contain between 2.8 and 7.1 wt. % REE oxides and are highly enriched in the light REE, having La/Yb ratios of 577–3229. These La/Yb ratios are not representative of the parental magmas but result from REE fractionation during crystallization of the perovskite. Parental magma La/Yb ratios are estimated to be of the order of 120–650. The lower La/Yb ratios (80–200) found for whole-rock kimberlites are considered to result from contamination by relatively heavy REE-enriched crustal material.

Late Tertiary-Quaternary volcanism around Calatrava, within the Hercynian massif of central Spain, is alkaline mafic-ultramafic, with ∼250 centres, mainly monogenetic cones and vents, with melilitite the most abundant eruptive. Carbonatite may be expected in association with melilitite and a clear example of magmatic carbonate emerged from a brief field reconnaissance. It is a vent filled with a mixed eruption of glassy melilitite lapilli in a carbonate matrix. Levels and profiles of trace elements are inseparable from recognized carbonatite, and totally unlike those in local sedimentary limestone and caliche. C and O isotopes are the same as those reported for carbonatite ashes in other provinces. Carbonate is present as globules in the melilitite glass, and as inclusions within large clinopyroxene and olivine grains, which are largely xenocrystic. Euhedral spinels in melilitite and carbonate matrix are chromite mantled with titano-magnetite, reported previously only from high-temperature kimberlite. Wehrlite fragments indicate direct eruption from the mantle. Phlogopite and chromian spinel are found only as inclusions in the olivine, pointing to a phlogopite-carbonate mantle source region of the type favoured for carbonatite and melilitite melt generation. Calatrava represents the most southerly and westerly expression in mainland Europe of intra-continental carbonatite-melilitite volcanism. Follow-up field visits have shown that carbonate volcanism is extensive and voluminous throughout the province, requiring a long-term research programme.

A detailed mineralogical examination of representative material from the P2-West 'kimberlite' located in the Wajrakarur Kimberlite Field (India) demonstrates that significant differences exist between these rocks and archetypal hypabyssal kimberlite. The intrusion consists of an olivine-phyric facies which has been transected by, and includes clasts of, a consanguineous phlogopite-rich pegmatitic facies. The olivine-rich parts of P2-West are relatively fresh and consist of euhedral-to-subhedral microphenocrystal olivine set in a groundmass of fine-grained anhedral monticellite, amoeboid apatite, and subhedral-to-euhedral perovskite within a partially chloritized-to-fresh phlogopite-rich mesostasis. The rock lacks the abundant olivine macrocrysts characteristic of kimberlite. Monticellite crystals are commonly partially or completely replaced by pectolite and hydrogarnet. Similar material occurs as irregular aggregates randomly scattered throughout the groundmass. The groundmass, in contrast to that of hypabyssal kimberlites, is relatively poor in spinels. Atoll spinels are absent, with the majority of spinels occurring principally as mantles upon microphenocrystal olivine. Disaggregated cumulate-like assemblages of intergrown anhedral perovskite and spinel are common. Spinel compositions are unlike those of kimberlites and their evolutionary trend is similar to that of lamproite and lamprophyre spinels. The pegmatitic facies of the intrusion are highly and pervasively altered, and characterized by the presence of large clasts, veins, and irregular aggregates consisting of large (1–5 mm) crystals of pinkish-bronze Al-poor phlogopite intergrown with and/or including: apatite; pectolite-hydrogarnet pseudomorphs after an unidentified euhedral phase; chlorite laths; barytolamprophyllite; perovskite; tausonite; diverse Sr-Ba-carbonates; and baryte. The presence of barytolamprophyllite and tausonite are typical of potassic undersaturated alkaline rocks and have never been reported from kimberlite; however, neither feldspar nor feldspathoids are present in P2-West. Micas in fresh and altered rocks are Al2O3- and BaO-poor, and exhibit compositional evolutionary trends towards tetraferriphlogopite rather than kinoshitalite. On the basis of these mineralogical data it is suggested that P2-West represents an unusual lamproite-like intrusion which has undergone extensive hydrothermal deuteric alteration and should not be considered a bona fide kimberlite.

The micro-inclusions located in the genetic centre of Yakutian diamond monocrystals have been studied using optical (anomalous birefringence, photoluminescence, cathodoluminescence) and microanalytical (electron-microprobe, proton-microprobe, scanning electron microscope) methods. Most diamonds nucleated heterogeneously on mineral seeds, that lowered the energy barrier to nucleation. Nucleation of peridotitic diamonds occurred on a matrix of graphite+iron+wüstite, in an environment dominated by forsteritic olivine and Fe-Ni sulfide. Nucleation of eclogitic diamonds occurred on a matrix of sulfide ± iron in an environment dominated by Fe-sulfide and omphacite (±-K-Na-Al-Si-melt). The mineral assemblages recorded in the central inclusions of Yakutian diamonds indicate that they grew in a reduced environment, with oxygen fugacity controlled by the iron-wüstite equilibrium. Nucleation of diamond occurred in the presence of a fluid, possibly a volatile-rich silicate melt, highly enriched in LIL (K, Ba, Rb, Sr) and HFSE (Nb, Ti, Zr) elements. This fluid also carried immiscible Fe-Ni-sulfide melts, and possibly a carbonatitic component; the introduction of this fluid into a reduced refractory environment may have been accompanied by a thermal pulse, and may have created the conditions necessary for the nucleation and growth of diamond.

Italian carbonatites form part of a suite with melilitites, normally an association characteristic of continental interiors; the perfect analogue of the Italian suite being the kamafugites (from the type area in SW Uganda, where the western branch of the East African Rift Zone cuts across the craton). The latter are commonly attributed to plume generation, whereas the Italian carbonatites, strung along the Appennine front, are usually linked to subduction. Evidently these two mechanisms are not essential, since neither can apply in both provinces. This conclusion is re-inforced by the related magmatism registered in both provinces in the Cretaceous. Phlogopite is ubiquitous in the mantle debris, and compositions from the two provinces overlap. Xenolithic phlogopites are distinct from cognate micas in the lavas, and from the carrier melt compositions, with similar distribution patterns in both suites. Kamafugitic magmas must be products of exceptional conditions, and added to the many near-identical magmatic features, the Italian and Ugandan volcanoes have sampled similar mantle conditions. Although the large scale geodynamic regimes are in total contrast, as are the deep mantle tomographic structures, the crucial common factor at the igneous province level is extensional tectonics. Extension, promoting release of volatiles (esp. CO2), is the vital trigger for this small volume, primary magmatism.

Some twenty kimberlite pipes outcrop along the eastern and western borders of the Kundelungu plateau, Shaba Province, Zaire. They are arranged roughly along two north-south trending alignments. The pipes probably intruded the Bangweulu Block, which stabilized around 1800 Ma. The exceptionally fresh kimberlites contain mantle-derived nodules (peridotites and eclogites), as well as megacrysts which may reach up to several cm in diameter. The most important megacrysts are garnets, ilmenites, clinopyroxenes, orthopyroxenes and olivines. Micas and diamonds are rarely observed. The clinopyroxenes can be subdivided in two groups: (1) a Ca-rich, low-T type, similar to the Cr-rich diopsides found in ‘depleted’ (granular) peridotites; and (2) subcalcic clinopyroxene comparable to the megacrysts and to the clinopyroxenes of ‘fertile’ (sheared) peridotites. The orthopyroxenes are less frequent and are Ca-poor enstatites (0.07–0.42 wt.% CaO) and Ti-bronzites (CaO <1.3 wt.%). All the analysed garnets are Ca-rich (>4.5 wt.% CaO) and all fall in the lherzolite field defined by Sobolev et al., 1973. The low-Ca garnets which appear in many diamond-bearing kimberlites have never been observed in Zaire, neither in the diamond-poor Kundelungu pipes nor in the diamond-rich Mbuji-Mayi pipes. The ilmenites define a trend close to the ‘magmatic Mg-enrichment trend';. The olivine macrocrysts have Fo contents comparable to those of peridotites (Fo90–93). The ultramafic nodules comprise lherzolites, harzburgites, pyroxenites, wehrlites and dunites. The granular textures and P-T equilibrium conditions (770–1380°C and 28–61 kbar) deduced from their mineral compositions, show clearly that they were derived from a mantle zone on the continental geotherm (90–190 km depth). The eclogite nodules, which are less frequent, contain only two mineral phases (pyrope-almandine-grossular and omphacite), and the texture and the mineral compositions are similar to those of Roberts Victor eclogites. Our findings support the conclusion of Nixon and Condliffe (1989) that low-T peridotites, eclogites and pyroxenites derived from ‘depleted’ lithosphere, while Cr-poor garnet, subcalcic diopside and bronzite megacrysts cristallized from fertile asthenosphere.

Compositional data are presented for Nb-Ba-K-V titanates from micaceous kimberlite (Star mine, S. Africa). These data significantly extend the previously known range of solid solutions in naturally occurring members of the hollandite group. Two distinct suites of crystals occur. One is a suite of primary groundmass prismatic crystals that are Ba-K-V-rich and represent solid-solutions from the priderite series towards mannardite. The second suite consists of anhedral xenocrysts that are Ba-free. In this suite relatively Nb-rich varieties (>4.0% Nb2O5) represent solid-solution towards a niobian-bearing potassian analogue of mannardite, whereas relative Nb-poor (<3.0% Nb2O5) varieties are Nb-bearing vanadian priderites. These hollandite-group minerals have compositions that differ significantly from priderites found in lamproites.

Kudryavtsevaite, ideally Na3MgFe3+Ti4O12, is a new mineral from kimberlitic rocks of the Orapa area, Botswana. It occurs as rare prismatic crystals, up to 100 μm m across, associated with Mg-rich ilmenite, freudenbergite and ulvöspinel. Kudryavtsevaite is opaque with a vitreous lustre and shows a black streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN100) is 901 kg mm−2 (range: 876–925) (Mohs hardness ∼6). In reflected light, kudryavtsevaite is moderately bireflectant and very weakly pleochroic from dark grey to a slightly bluish grey. Under crossed polars, it is very weakly anisotropic with greyish-bluish rotation tints. Internal reflections are absent. Reflectance values (%), Rmin and Rmax, are: 21.3, 25.4 (471.1 nm), 20.6, 24.1 (548.3 nm), 20.0, 23.5 (586.6 nm) and 19.1, 22.4 (652.3 nm).

Kudryavtsevaite is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with a = 27.714(1), b = 2.9881(3), c = 11.3564(6) Å, V = 940.5(1) Å3, and Z = 4. The crystal structure [R1 = 0.0168 for 819 reflections with I > 2σ(I)] consists of edge-sharing and corner-sharing chains composed of Mg, Fe3+ and Ti atoms coordinated by six atoms of oxygen and running along the b axis, with Na filling the tunnels formed by the chains. The eight strongest powder-diffraction lines [d in Å (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 7.17 (100) (301), 4.84 (70) (302), 2.973 (35) (901), 2.841 (50) (004), 2.706 (50) (902), 2.541 (50) (312), 2.450 (70) (611), and 2.296 (45) (612). The average results of 12 electron microprobe analyses gave (wt.%): Na2O 16.46(15), CaO 1.01(3), MgO 5.31(5), Fe2O3 22.24(32), Cr2O3 1.05(6), Al2O3 0.03(2), TiO2 53.81(50), total 99.91, corresponding to the empirical formula (Na2.89Ca0.10)Σ2.99(Ti3.67Fe1.523+Mg0.72Cr0.08)Σ5.99O12, or ideally Na3MgFe3+Ti4O12.

The new mineral has been approved by the IMA-CNMNC and named for Galina Kudryavtseva (1947–2006), a well known Russian mineralogist and founder of the Diamond Mineralogy Laboratory and scientific school for investigation of diamond mineralogy and geochemistry at the Lomonosov State University in Moscow, Russia.
