The distribution of mass in galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses is often modelled as an elliptical power law plus ‘external shear’, which notionally accounts for line-of-sight galaxies and cosmic shear. We argue that it does not, using three lines of evidence from the analysis of 54 galaxy-scale strong lenses: (i) strong lensing external shears do not correlate with weak lensing; (ii) the measured shear magnitudes in strong lenses (which are field galaxies) are too large (exceeding 0.05) for their environment and; (iii) the external shear position angle preferentially aligns or anti-aligns with the mass model position angle, indicating an internal origin. We argue the measured strong lensing shears are therefore systematically accounting for missing complexity in the canonical elliptical power-law mass model. If we can introduce this complexity into our lens models, this will further lensing studies of galaxy formation, dark matter and Cosmology.

Galaxy-galaxy strong lensing systems have been used in literature to test General Relativity by constraining the post-Newtonian parameter (γPPN). Nevertheless, these methods are prone to systematic errors, some of which arise from difficulties in modelling the dynamics of the lens galaxy. In this study, we address the systematic error related to the assumption of a constant anisotropy between the radial and tangential components of the velocity dispersion of stars within the lens galaxy, characterised by the parameter β. We considered two radial models for the anisotropy parameter, the Osipkov-Merritt and Mamon & Lokas, as well three Gaussian priors for constant β. Our analysis showed that the choice of β has a strong impact on the value of γPPN, with radial models leading to lower values of this parameter.

Strong gravitational lensing by galaxies provides us with a powerful laboratory for testing dark matter models. Various particle models for dark matter give rise to different small-scale distributions of mass in the lens galaxy, which can be differentiated with sensitive observations. Th. The sensitivity of a gravitational lens observation to the presence (or absence) of low-mass dark structures in the lens galaxy is determined mainly by the angular resolution of the instrument and the spatial structure of the source. Here, I discuss results from the analysis of a global VLBI observation of a gravitationally lensed radio jet. With an angular resolution better than 5 milli-arcseconds and a highly extended, spatially resolved source, we are able to place competitive constraints on the particle mass in fuzzy dark matter models using this single observation. I also discuss preliminary results from our analysis of warm dark matter models using this lens system.

Time delay cosmography is based on the study of multiply gravitationally lensed images of a variable source. Their time delay differences are linearly dependent on the Fermat potential differences at the images’ positions and the Hubble parameter, whose exact value is to this date strongly debated in the framework of the Hubble tension. In this paper we present the study of SDSSJ1433, a quadruply lensed QSO, the time delays of which have been obtained after a 3-year observational campaign from the 2.1m Wendelstein telescope in the optical ǵ filter, and the corresponding mass model was constrained from multi-band archival HST observations. The resulting H0 value is $$77.4\frac{{km}}{{s\,Mpc}}$$ with a precision of∼ 6 %.

The luminosity of the brightest stars (tip) of the red giant branch (TRGB) in the color–magnitude diagrams of old stars was used early on to introduce the ‘multiple stellar populations’ concept, in 1944, by Walter Baade. However, the precision and accuracy of the TRGB for distance estimation has not been known well for long. In the modern era, equipped with high spatial resolution imaging telescopes, the TRGB is considered an excellent standard candle for any type of resolved galaxies, thus representing a powerful probe for cosmology. The TRGB has several advantages over the classical Cepheids. I review how we can apply the TRGB in cosmology. Four science cases, from large to small scales, are presented: (1) the Hubble flow with Type Ia supernovae; (2) Virgo Cluster infall and dark matter; (3) dark galaxies; and (4) dark matter-free galaxies.

Galaxy-scale strong lensing is a powerful tool in Astrophysics and Cosmology, enabling studies of massive galaxies’ internal structure, their formation and evolution, stellar initial mass function, and cosmological parameters. In this conference proceeding, we highlight key findings from the past decade in astrophysical applications of strong lensing at the galaxy scale. We then briefly summarize the present status of discovery and analyses of new samples from recent or ongoing surveys. Finally, we offer insights into anticipated developments in the upcoming era of big data shaping the future of this field, thanks to the Rubin, Euclid, and Roman observatories.

Using the SDSS spectroscopy, we have carried out fine optical spectral classification for activity types for 710 AGN candidates. These objects come from a larger sample of some 2,500 candidate AGN using pre-selection by various samples; bright objects of the Catalog of Quasars and Active Galactic Nuclei, AGN candidates among X-ray sources, optically variable radio sources, IRAS extragalactic objects, etc. A number of papers have been published with the results of this spectral classification. More than 800 QSOs have been identified and classified, including 710 QSOs, Seyferts and Composites. The fine classification shows that many QSOs show the same features as Seyferts, i.e., subtypes between S1 and S2 (S1.2, S1.5, S1.8 and S1.9). We have introduced subtypes for the QSOs: QSO1.2, QSO1.5, QSO1.8, QSO1.9, though the last subtype does not appear in SDSS wavelength range due to mostly highly redshifted Hα (the main line for identification of the 1.9 subtype). Thus, independent of the luminosity (which serves as a separator between QSOs and Seyferts), AGN show the same features. We also have classified many objects as Composites, spectra having composite characteristics between Sy and LINERs, Sy and HII or LINERs and HII; in some cases all three characteristics appear together resulting as Sy/LINER/HII subtype. The QSOs subtypes together with Seyfert ones allow to follow AGN properties along larger redshift range expanding our knowledge on the evolution of AGN to more distant Universe represented by QSOs.

Interstellar travel in the Milky Way is commonly thought to be a long and dangerous enterprise, but are all galaxies so hazardous? I introduce the concept of galactic traversability to address this question. Stellar populations are one factor in traversability, with higher stellar densities and velocity dispersions aiding rapid spread across a galaxy. The interstellar medium (ISM) is another factor, as gas, dust grains and cosmic rays all pose hazards to starfarers. I review the current understanding of these components in different types of galaxies, and conclude that red quiescent galaxies without star formation have favourable traversability. Compact elliptical galaxies and globular clusters could be ‘super-traversable’, because stars are packed tightly together and there are minimal ISM hazards. Overall, if the ISM is the major hindrance to interstellar travel, galactic traversability increases with cosmic time as gas fractions and star formation decline. Traversability is a consideration in extragalactic surveys for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).

At least half of the local galaxies reside in galaxy groups, which indicates that the group is the common environment where galaxies evolve. Therefore, it is important to probe how significantly galaxies are affected by group environmental processes, in order to obtain a better understanding of galaxy evolution. We carried out a new CO imaging survey for 31 galaxies in the IC 1459 and NGC 4636 groups, using the Atacama Compact Array, to study the effect of the group environment on the molecular gas properties and the star formation activity. With our resolved CO data, combined with high-resolution H i images, we find asymmetric CO and H i distributions in the group galaxies. Compared to isolated galaxies, group members have relatively low molecular gas fraction and low star formation rate. These results suggest that the group environment can change the properties of cold gas components and star formation in group galaxies.

How galaxies replenish their gas supply in order to sustain star formation, is a research topic of many of the new and upcoming neutral atomic hydrogen (Hi) surveys on the SKA precursor instruments. This replenishment, or accretion, of gas in the form of Hi is likely to occur at column densities one or two orders of magnitude below previous observational limits and it has, so far, not been unambiguously detected. We present recent deep Hi observations of NGC 5068, an isolated nearby star-forming galaxy observed by MeerKAT as part of the MHONGOOSE survey. This survey is the deepest Hi survey of nearby galaxies until the advent of the SKA and is reaching column densities of resolution. The combination of the resolution and sensitivity of the MeerKAT HI data have revealed “fingers” of low column density gas extending out from the main Hi disk of the galaxy. While the origin of these fingers remains a mystery for now, the dynamics of the main galaxy disk and the outer disk in which the fingers are located, as well as the morphology of the fingers, does not seem to suggest a previous merger event.

Green valley galaxies (by selection) exhibit lower specific star formation rates and are thought to be in the transition from the active star-forming phase to the quiescent state. Physical mechanisms responsible for the depleted star formation in green valley galaxies, however, are still under debate. Using the ALMA-MaNGA Quenching and STar formation (ALMaQUEST) CO observations, we study the so-called ‘resolved star formation scaling relations’, which describe relationships among surface densities of star formation rate, stellar mass, and molecular gas mass. By comparing the kpc-scale scaling relations between the main sequence and green valley galaxies, we are able to quantify if the deficit of star formation in green valley galaxies is driven by depleted molecular gas or inefficient star formation. And finally, we present our recent ALMA dense gas (HCN and HCO+) observations for a set of selected ALMaQUEST galaxies to discuss whether the green valley galaxies lack dense molecular gas or not.

Thanks to the long-term collaborations between nuclear and astrophysics, we have good understanding on the origin of elements in the universe, except for the elements around Ti and some neutron-capture elements. From the comparison between observations of nearby stars and Galactic chemical evolution models, a rapid neutron-capture process associated with core-collapse supernovae is required. The production of C, N, F and some minor isotopes depends on the rotation of massive stars, and the observations of distant galaxies with ALMA indicate rapid cosmic enrichment. It might be hard to find very metal-poor or Population III (and dust-free) galaxies at very high redshifts even with JWST.

We trained a Neural Network that can obtain selected STARLIGHT parameters directly from S-PLUS photometry. The training set consisted of over 55 thousand galaxies with their stellar population parameters obtained from a STARLIGHT application by Cid Fernandes et al. (2005). These galaxies were crossmatched with the S-PLUS iDR 3 database, thus, recovering the photometry for the 12 band filters for 55803 objects. We also considered the spectroscopic redshift for each object which was obtained from the SDSS. Finally, we trained a fully connected Neural Network with the 12-band photometry + redshift as features, and targeted some of the STARLIGHT parameters, such as stellar mass and mean stellar age. The model performed very well for some parameters, for example, the stellar mass, with an error of 0.23 dex. In the future, we aim to apply the model to all S-PLUS galaxies, obtaining never-before-seen photometric synthesis for most objects in the catalogue.
