Biosimilar drugs enter the United States market well after they enter the European market. That is likely because pharmaceutical companies have many more patents in the United States than in Europe. But why is patent coverage of biological drugs so much more extensive in United States? This case study seeks to answer this question for drug formulation patents.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of toxic baits and attractants for fruit flies on the biology of its parasitoid Fopius arisanus. We tested two food-based attractants; hydrolysed corn protein (Biofruit® 3%) and sugarcane molasses (7%), their mixtures with spinosad and malathion-based insecticides, and a ready-to-use commercial bait (Success 0.02 CB®). Malathion-based lures were used as references for mortality (i.e., positive control), while negative control was honey. The formulations Biofruit® + malathion (T1), molasses + malathion (T2), and spinosad + molasses (T3) were toxic to F. arisanus, being classified as harmful (class 4). In addition, toxic baits composed of Biofruit + spinosad (T4) reduced parasitism by 97.99%, being rated as moderately harmful (class 3). Yet, Success 0.02 CB® (T7) was considered slightly toxic (class 2), causing a 64.55% reduction in parasitism. Regarding the biological parameters of F. arisanus, offspring number and parasitoid longevity were significantly reduced by using hydrolysed protein attractants when compared to the control (honey). However, sugarcane molasses improved parasitoid reproduction and longevity, as did the honey. Lastly, ingestion tests showed the major role of attractants in toxic-bait formulations against F. arisanus.

A collection of 65 formulated tablets and capsules were analyzed for phase composition by full pattern matching powder diffraction methods. The collection contained 32 of the top 200 prescription drugs sold in 2016 as well as many high-volume prescriptions and over the counter drugs from prior years. The study was used to evaluate new methods of analysis as well as the efficacy of programs designed to collect references on high volume excipients and pharmaceuticals for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™. The use of full pattern matching methods as well as reference pattern additions of many common excipients enabled major phase excipient identification in all formulations. This included identification of crystalline, nanocrystalline, and amorphous ingredients because full pattern matching involved the use of characteristic coherent and incoherent scatter. Oftentimes identification of the major excipients significantly aided the clean identification of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and their polymorphic form, even at low concentrations (1–10 wt. %). Overall 93% of the APIs were identified, most through a PDF® material reference, but also through patent cross-referencing and similarity analysis comparisons.

The increasing presence of pesticides in natural ecosystems has stimulated research to look for improved adsorbent materials which can be used to remediate and prevent soil and water contamination by these compounds. Among the different materials that have been assayed as adsorbents of pesticides are natural clay minerals, particularly 2:1 phyllosilicates and their structurally complementary synthetic analogues layered double hydroxides (LDHs). The great interest in natural clays and LDHs as adsorbent materials is mainly related to the large specific surface areas associated with their layered structure, the ease with which they are obtained or synthesized, and the possibility of modifying their surfaces to increase their affinity for specific adsorbates. This review summarizes the adsorptive properties of natural clays and LDHs for pesticides and related organic compounds. Particular emphasis is given to the surface modification of clay minerals and LDHs with organic ions as a strategy to improve the efficiency of these materials as pesticide adsorbents. Potential applications of unmodified and modified clays and LDHs as adsorbents to prevent and remediate soil and water contamination by pesticides are also discussed.

Woollyleaf bursage [Ambrosia grayi (A. Nels.) Shinners # AMBGR] and Texas blueweed (Helianthus ciliaris DC. # HELCI) increasingly are weed problems on the Texas High Plains. Field experiments were established to evaluate dimethylamine, potassium, sodium, calcium, and aluminum salts of dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) applied at 1.1, 2.2, and 4.4 kg ai/ha to infestations of each species. Initial woollyleaf bursage control was better than initial Texas blueweed control. Dimethylamine and potassium salts provided highest control levels, and increasing rates improved control. One-year control was higher for Texas blueweed than woollyleaf bursage, and 1-yr control of both species improved with increased rates.

The basidiomycete fungus, Chondrostereum purpureum Fr. Pouzar, has been found to be a good potential bioherbicide candidate for control of hardwood vegetation in forests. However, its interaction with some agrochemicals that are normally employed in forest protection was not known. Employing two concentrations (0.01% v/v and 0.1% v/v) of several agrochemicals, a laboratory study was conducted to assess their impacts on the infective mycelia. Except for Bond, and Suntan gel-2, most adjuvants, sunscreen agents, and pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides) were fungitoxic at 0.1%. Fungitoxicity was concentration dependent and the results indicate that the possibility of tank-mixing the basidiomycete with agrochemicals appears limited and the possibility of agrochemical residue effects on survival of the basidiomycete is implied.

The butoxyethyl ester of triclopyr {[(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] acetic acid} was more effective than either the triethylamine salt formulation or an equivalent combined rate of the butoxyethyl esters of triclopyr plus 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] (1:2, w/w) for the control of Virginia creeper [Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch. # PRTQU]. Carrier volume did not affect 14C-triclopyr absorption and distribution, but control generally was greater after high carrier-volume application (281 L/ha) because the dense Virginia creeper canopy was thoroughly penetrated. In orchards, Virginia creeper was controlled by triclopyr ester at 0.6 kg ae/ha through the second season after treatment if foliage was covered thoroughly.

The formulation of trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) encapsulated within a starch granule can reduce the loss in activity associated with the delayed incorporation of the emulsifiable concentrate formulation of trifluralin. Good weed control and high soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Wells II’] yields were obtained when a starch formulation of trifluralin was applied in the fall and incorporated at planting time the following spring. The cultural practices of shallow incorporation, delayed incorporation, and/or midseason cultivation intensified the weed control provided by a starch formulation of trifluralin. The adsorption of additional trifluralin onto the granule surface, cross-linking starch xanthate with a weak oxidant, and mixing granules with different release rates also increased initial control. Granules produced by the starch-calcium and starch-borate processes exhibited many of the same characteristics of granules produced by the older starch xanthate process, but are much less expensive to produce and do not require the use of the toxic carbon disulfide in the encapsulation process. The combination of an appropriate starch formulation of trifluralin with proper cultural practices provided good weed control from fall and spring applications of trifluralin.

It is argued, illustrated by a case example, that homework quality and end of therapy outcomes can be positively affected when ideas of compassion and attention to individual frames of reference are considered. It is suggested that by exploring the affect experienced when completing tasks and being mindful of client learning (i.e. the zone of proximal development), engagement and emotional connection with homework increase.

Background: Psychiatric staff play a key role in the lives of people with psychosis and the quality of staff and service user relationships is associated with relapse and recovery. One factor that might determine the capacity of staff to form positive therapeutic relationships is their appraisals of service users' mental health problems. Method: A pilot intervention was implemented with psychiatric staff that involved helping them develop psychological formulations for individual service users. Staff perceptions of service users' mental health problems were measured before and after the intervention using Likert scales. Data at the two time points were collated for 30 staff. Results: There was a significant increase in staff perceptions of the degree of control service users and themselves had over problems, an increase in the degree of effort they felt service users were making in coping, reductions in blame, and more optimism about treatment. Staff also reported an increase in understanding of service users' problems, more positive feelings towards service users, and an increase in confidence in their work. Conclusions: Results from this pilot are promising, but findings warrant replication in controlled studies. It is also important to establish whether changes in staff perceptions influence the actual nature of staff-service user relationships.

Pesticides provide an important component of integrated pest management, but the timing, accuracy of dosage, and method of applying the pesticides need careful consideration to permit harmonisation with other control tactics. Concern about pesticide spray drift has led to categorising the spray quality of nozzles, which is defined by comparing the droplet spectra of selected reference nozzles measured with a laser light diffraction analyser. However, there is a conflict between a need for small droplets for increased biological efficacy and large droplets to reduce downwind drift. Registration authorities tend to favour a coarser spray with large droplets, and an untreated barrier area that can be left around a treated crop to protect sensitive crops downwind that can provide a refuge for natural enemies. In some circumstances, drift can be reduced with small droplets by electrostatically charging a spray. The charged spray needs to be released close to the crop to avoid the upward dispersion of droplets within a spray cloud due to mutual repulsion exacerbated by convective air movement. Increased deposition of charged sprays on the crop foliage is associated with less soil contamination which allows greater survival of ground-dwelling predators. This feature needs to be exploited by growing relatively narrow strips of a range of crops so that if one crop needs a pesticide treatment, natural enemies can be conserved in adjacent untreated crops. By careful selection of insecticides and dosage rates, these predators should be able to recolonise the treated area and thus integrate chemical with biological control. Application of more selective mycopesticides may require special formulations as well as particular droplet spectra. Pesticides can also be applied mixed with attractants such as pheromones, as a ‘lure and kill’ technique.

Seedlings of apple variety, Yarlington mill, were sprayed with different sprays containing 0.1% cypermethrin, and were subjected for 15 min to 65.3 mm artificial rainfall. The effectiveness of deposits after rainfall were tested in the laboratory with neonate codling moth larvae.

Cypermethrin formulations sprayed with each nozzle were more persistent after artificial rain, when small droplets of volume median diameter (VMD = 30–70 μm) were applied by spinning discs (charged or uncharged) compared with larger droplets (VMD* = 90–160 μm) produced by air shear nozzle. No significant difference in effects was obtained between droplets by either charged or uncharged disc.

The persistence of 34 formulations in the green (G) and red (R) berries of C. arabica var. typica, infested with female adult H. hampei were assayed by a dip-technique. The 7-day LC50 values for 29 formulations were ca 10–82% less than those of the 3-day values; the decrease in the values for leading formulations being thiodan EC 35 13.4 (8.3), perfekthion 6.5 (39.9), carbicron 12.4 (10.6), thiodan EC 324.3 (16.4), malathion 35.2 (25.7), lindane 82.1 (76.9) and tiovel 59.6 (67). The values for the 17 least toxic formulations (except dimilin and bimarit) showed ca 27–88% decrease during the last 4 days of observations.

Twenty-three insecticide formulations were bioassayed for toxicity against the eggs and larvae of H. hampei in maturing and ripe berries of C. arabica L. Var. typica. The infested berries were dipped in different concentrations of individual formulations, dissected 24 hr later for recording larval mortality and transferring the eggs to wet filter papers where larval hatching was recorded for the next 4 days. The order of toxicity and LC50 (% a.i. × 103) values for the eggs in maturing and ripe (figures in parenthesis) berries were: thiodan EC 35, 5.1 (6.2) > perfekthion, 5.9 (8.1) > decis, 7.2 (9.4) > carbicron, 7.3 (9.8) > actellic, 10.6(12.9) > thiodan EC 3, 14.7 (17.4); > folimat > aldicarb > dursban > tiovel > supona > dimilin > methomyl > kelthane > phosdrin > sevin > methoxychlor > dieldrin > azordrin > fenitrothion > bimarit > chlorpyrifos > gardona, 39.7−1043.7 (44.3−2642.2). The order of toxicity remained almost the same for the larvae, the LC50 values being 2.1−12.7 (2.9−21.8) for the top six and 14.8−1920.4 (47.1−2738.6) for the remaining 17 formulations. Generally, the formulations were 1.1−2.7-fold more toxic to larvae than to eggs infesting the maturing berries but 0.47−3.57 more toxic to eggs than larvae in the ripe berries.

The LC50 values (% active ingredient in parentheses) for 34 formulations of 29 insecticides, obtained by dipping green berries (GWB) infested with adult Hypothenemus hampei, were: thiodan EC 35 (0.0003) > perfekthion (0.0004) > carbicron (0.00044) > decis (0.0005) > actellic (0.0008) > basudin (0.0009) > belmark and ciodrin (0.0012) > thiodan EC 3 (0.0013) > malathion (0.0014) > folimat and bidrin (0.002) > aldicarb and lindane (0.003) > nexion > tiovel EC 3 > dursban (0.0046–0.006) > supona > methomyl > kelthane (0.011–0.012) > chlordane > aldrin > dimilin > chlorfenvinphos > phosdrin > sevin > methoxychlor > dieldrin (0.016–0.025) > nexagan (0.034) > azodrin (0.04) > fenitrothion (0.07) > bimarit (0.14) > chlorpyrifos (0.39) > gardona (0.96).

The order of toxicity remained the same for borers in the pulp (GP) or endosperm (GE) of green berries or endosperm of red (RE) berries, though the LC50 of each formulation of the same or different insecticides varied significantly. The respective LC50 values for the four leading, and the rest of the formulations were about 7−21- and 2−6-fold higher in GWB than GP, 9−23 and 2−5-fold higher in GE than GP, 1−2.3- and 1−3-fold higher in RE than GE, and 12−25- and 3−37-fold higher in RE than GWB. The practical significance of the results is discussed.
