The preferential attachment model is a natural and popular random graph model for a growing network that contains very well-connected ‘hubs’. We study the higher-order connectivity of such a network by investigating the topological properties of its clique complex. We concentrate on the Betti numbers, a sequence of topological invariants of the complex related to the numbers of holes (equivalently, repeated connections) of different dimensions. We prove that the expected Betti numbers grow sublinearly fast, with the trivial exceptions of those at dimensions 0 and 1. Our result also shows that preferential attachment graphs undergo infinitely many phase transitions within the parameter regime where the limiting degree distribution has an infinite variance. Regarding higher-order connectivity, our result shows that preferential attachment favors higher-order connectivity. We illustrate our theoretical results with simulations.

Real networks often exhibit clustering, the tendency to form relatively small groups of nodes with high edge densities. This clustering property can cause large numbers of small and dense subgraphs to emerge in otherwise sparse networks. Subgraph counts are an important and commonly used source of information about the network structure and function. We study probability distributions of subgraph counts in a community affiliation graph. This is a random graph generated as an overlay of m partly overlapping independent Bernoulli random graphs (layers) $G_1,\dots,G_m$ with variable sizes and densities. The model is parameterised by a joint distribution of layer sizes and densities. When m grows linearly in the number of nodes n, the model generates sparse random graphs with a rich statistical structure, admitting a nonvanishing clustering coefficient and a power-law limiting degree distribution. In this paper we establish the normal and $\alpha$-stable approximations to the numbers of small cliques, cycles, and more general 2-connected subgraphs of a community affiliation graph.

Numerous works have been proposed to generate random graphs preserving the same properties as real-life large-scale networks. However, many real networks are better represented by hypergraphs. Few models for generating random hypergraphs exist, and also, just a few models allow to both preserve a power-law degree distribution and a high modularity indicating the presence of communities. We present a dynamic preferential attachment hypergraph model which features partition into communities. We prove that its degree distribution follows a power-law, and we give theoretical lower bounds for its modularity. We compare its characteristics with a real-life co-authorship network and show that our model achieves good performances. We believe that our hypergraph model will be an interesting tool that may be used in many research domains in order to reflect better real-life phenomena.

We consider a random graph model that was recently proposed as a model for complex networks by Krioukov et al. (2010). In this model, nodes are chosen randomly inside a disk in the hyperbolic plane and two nodes are connected if they are at most a certain hyperbolic distance from each other. It has previously been shown that this model has various properties associated with complex networks, including a power-law degree distribution and a strictly positive clustering coefficient. The model is specified using three parameters: the number of nodes N, which we think of as going to infinity, and $\alpha, \nu > 0$, which we think of as constant. Roughly speaking, $\alpha$ controls the power-law exponent of the degree sequence and $\nu$ the average degree. Earlier work of Kiwi and Mitsche (2015) has shown that, when $\alpha \lt 1$ (which corresponds to the exponent of the power law degree sequence being $\lt 3$), the diameter of the largest component is asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) at most polylogarithmic in N. Friedrich and Krohmer (2015) showed it was a.a.s. $\Omega(\log N)$ and improved the exponent of the polynomial in $\log N$ in the upper bound. Here we show the maximum diameter over all components is a.a.s. $O(\log N),$ thus giving a bound that is tight up to a multiplicative constant.

The Holme‒Kim random graph process is a variant of the Barabási‒Álbert scale-free graph that was designed to exhibit clustering. In this paper we show that whether the model does indeed exhibit clustering depends on how we define the clustering coefficient. In fact, we find that the local clustering coefficient typically remains positive whereas global clustering tends to 0 at a slow rate. These and other results are proven via martingale techniques, such as Freedman's concentration inequality combined with a bootstrapping argument.

We confirm a conjecture by Everett et al. (2004) regarding the problem of maximizing closeness centralization in two-mode data, where the number of data of each type is fixed. Intuitively, our result states that among all networks obtainable via two-mode data, the largest closeness is achieved by simply locally maximizing the closeness of a node. Mathematically, our study concerns bipartite graphs with fixed size bipartitions, and we show that the extremal configuration is a rooted tree of depth 2, where neighbors of the root have an equal or almost equal number of children.

We consider a large class of exponential random graph models and prove the existence of a region of parameter space corresponding to the emergent multipartite structure, separated by a phase transition from a region of disordered graphs. An essential feature is the formalism of graph limits as developed by Lovász et al. for dense random graphs.
