Cation ordering in amesite-2H2 from Antarctica has reduced the true symmetry from the ideal hexagonal space group P63 to triclinic P1. All crystals show 6-fold biaxial twin sectors on (001), and the twinned crystals produce an average diffraction symmetry that is hexagonal. Individual twin sectors cut from the larger aggregate have 2 V optic angles near 18°, slightly monoclinic unit-cell geometry, and triclinic diffraction symmetry. Structural refinement of an untwinned sector in subgroup symmetry shows nearly complete ordering of Si,Al in tetrahedral sites and of Mg, Al in octahedral sites.

In triclinic symmetry the two layers in the unit cell are no longer equivalent. Tetrahedra lying on the pseudo-63 screw axis are alternately Si-rich and Al-rich in adjacent layers. Of the three octahedral sites in each layer, one is smaller than the other two and is interpreted as Al-rich. The distribution of Al-rich and Mg-rich octahedra violates both the pseudo-3-fold rotation axis within each layer and the pseudo-63 screw axis that relates one layer to the next in the ideal space group. Local charge balance is achieved in adjacent layers by location of all tetrahedral and octahedral Al in lines parallel to X1 and spaced at intervals of b1/2. Similar charge balance patterns parallel to X2 and X3 are postulated to account for the sector twinning, which has been observed also in amesites from Chester, Massachusetts, USA, Saranovskoye, USSR, and Postmasburg, South Africa.

The crystal structure of amesite-2H1 from the Postmasburg Mn ores of South Africa has been refined to R = 4.7% using Siemens P4 rotating-anode MoKα X-ray data and SHELXL-93 software. Partial ordering of tetrahedral Si,Al and especially of octahedral Mg,Al has reduced the ideal P63cm symmetry to triclinic P1 (refined as C1). Tetrahedral rotation of 15° moves the basal oxygens toward the octahedral cations in the same layer but away from the OH H-donors of the next layers. The ordering pattern of AlIV and AlVI is unique in that the locus of Al-rich sites consists of 2 intersecting sets of zigzag lines parallel to X2 and X3, plus 2 Al-rich octahedra in layer 2 instead of the usual 1 site.

Altered perthites from a weathered pegmatite in the Spruce Pine District, North Carolina, were characterized by electron microprobe as a K-rich microcline host with lesser Na-rich plagioclase having a lamellar morphology. Light-optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show microtextural elements such as phase boundaries, holes and microfractures that could serve as potential nucleation sites for alteration to clay minerals.

The host microcline contains albite and pericline twinning textures that vary in character; the amount of each twinning type and/or the size of twin individuals changes on a μm scale. Plagioclase ranges from large lamellar vein and film albite (visible in the light microscope) to cryptoperthite whose size ranges from μm to perhaps 100 Å. The smallest-scale albite appears to be a late-stage phase of exsolution in which lamellae have nucleated heterogeneously on albite-twin composition planes in the microcline.

Alteration is concentrated in vein and film albite, especially along grain boundaries with microcline. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of intensely altered pegmatite show halloysite. Holes, microfractures, vein albite/host microcline boundaries and microcline/halloysite boundaries trend parallel to the traces of (010) and {110}, suggesting that these directions are pathways along which fluids migrate. Cleavage and microfractures occur along, and holes are bounded by, these directions. Holes are associated with dislocations and the latter are observed at feldspar/clay boundaries. Twin domains and cryptoperthitic albite are less susceptible to alteration than coarse lamellar albite and regions containing negative crystals and microfractures. However, microtextures in some areas containing halloysite suggest that once fluids penetrate the crystal, alteration may proceed preferentially in more strongly twinned regions.

The present study deals with accurate identification of polytypes, twins, and allotwins – oriented crystal associations of more than one polytype. The trioctahedral 1:1 layered silicate cronstedtite was studied using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected with a four-circle diffractometer equipped with a CCD detector. The sample from the skarn occurrence, Ouedi Beht, El Hammam, Morocco, was explored. It contains cronstedtite in fibrous massive aggregates in the central part, and euhedral crystals in surrounding veinlets and druses. The reciprocal space (RS) sections created by the diffractometer software and presented here were used to determine the OD (ordered-disordered) subfamilies (Bailey’s group A, B, C, D) and to identify polytypes. The chemical compositions of some crystals were determined thereafter by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA-WDS). Some crystals studied are more or less complicated allotwins. Polytypes were thus separated by cleaving crystals into smaller parts in many cases. All polytypes found belong to subfamilies A or D. The following polytypes of the subfamily A were identified: 2M1 (a = 5.49, b = 9.51, c = 14.40 Å, β = 97.30°, space group Cc), 1M (a = 5.51, b = 9.54, c = 7.33 Å, β = 104.5°, Cm), 3T (a = 5.51, c = 21.32 Å, P31), 6T2 (a = 5.50, c = 42.60 Å, P31). 2M1 and 3T were present as isolated crystals or separated by cleaving, otherwise all these polytypes are parts of allotwins. The 2M1 polytype is sometimes twinned by reticular pseudo merohedry with twin index n = 3 and 120° rotation about the chex axis as the twin operation. Allotwins of 1M + twinned 2M1 polytypes are also present. Another kind of twinning, with rotation by (2n+1)×60° about chex is rare. The subfamily D is represented mostly by 2H1 and 2H2 polytypes, a = 5.50, c = 14.25 Å, space groups P63cm (2H1), P63 (2H2). In addition, several six-layer (a = 5.49, c = 42.80 Å), mostly non-MDO polytypes were separated from allotwins by cleaving. In order to identify them, 24 possible stacking sequences were modeled, diffraction patterns calculated, graphical identification diagrams constructed, and comparisons made with actual RS sections. This simulation revealed that five pairs of sequences provided identical diffraction patterns. Polytypes actually found correspond to the following sequences: 1 (6T1), 5 (proposed Ramsdell’s symbol 6T3), 8+10 (6T5), 11+12 (6T4), 24 (6T6, trigonal polytypes, space group type P3), 22 (6R1), and 23 (6R2, rhombohedral polytypes, space group type R3c and R3, respectively). The RS section corresponding to the hexagonal polytype 6H2 (sequence 14) was also found. However, diffraction patterns geometrically indistinguishable can be produced by the twin with rotation by 180° about chex as a twin operation of the rhombohedral polytype 6R2 (sequence 23). Several aggregates with fiber texture of polytype 2H2 were separated from the central part. Use of EPMA-WDS revealed Fe and Si along with significant amounts of Mn and Mg. Crystals from veins were more Mn- and Mg-rich than these from the central part. Traces of Cl, S, and Al are present also.

The present study presents a generalized procedure to accurately identify trioctahedral 1:1 layer silicates. The reciprocal space (RS) sections were obtained by the precession method by “unwarping” frames that were recorded using diffractometers with area detectors or from electron diffraction tomography (EDT) patterns. Distributions of subfamily reflections along the reciprocal lattice rows [21̄l]* / [11l]* / [1̄2l]* in (2hh̄lhex)* / (hhlhex)* / (h̄2hlhex)* RS planes were used to determine OD (Ordered — Disordered) subfamilies (Bailey’s groups A, B, C, D). The distributions along the [10l]* / [01l]* / [1̄1l]* rows in the (h0lhex)* / (0klhex)* / (h̄hlhex) RS planes allow determination of the polytypes. The use of traditional identification diagrams for the determination of OD subfamilies and polytypes was generalized in order to identify monoclinic and orthorhombic MDO (Maximum Degree of Order) polytypes. In these polytypes, the distribution of characteristic reflections along rows is different in RS sections that are perpendicular and diagonal to the symmetry plane of the polytype. The identification diagram of non-MDO polytype 6T2 is also presented. The method was applied to the identification of single crystals of cronstedtite that were synthesized during interactions of Fe metal with a natural claystone during experiments over a temperature range of 90-60°C. Conical and pyramidal crystals with a maximum size of a few micrometers were studied using electron diffraction tomography (EDT). The following polytypes were identified: 1M, 2M1, an apparently ninetuple polytype that was interpreted as triclinic 3A (group A), 1T (group C), and disordered crystals of group D. The 1M polytype was the most abundant. Some 1M crystals were twinned by reticular merohedry with a 120° rotation along the chex axis as the twin operation. The 2M1 occurred as isolated crystals as well as in mixed crystals. Intergrown 1T and 1M polytypes of the C and A group, respectively, were identified in one mixed crystal. The possible stacking sequence and the 3A polytype identification diagram was presented and discussed. Example RS sections of all polytypes were identified and demonstrated.

The present study provides an example of the accurate identification of polytypes of trioctahedral 1:1 layered silicates from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected with the aid of a four-circle diffractometer equipped with an area detector. Single crystals of the mineral cronstedtite from the Nagybörzsöny gold ore deposit, northern Hungary, were studied. The chemical composition of some crystals was determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The precession-like images of the reciprocal space (RS) sections created by the diffractometer software and presented in the study were used to determine the OD (ordered-disordered) subfamilies (Bailey’s groups A, B, C, D) and particular polytypes. With one exception, all crystals studied belong to subfamily A. The rare polytype 1M, a = 5.51, b = 9.54, c = 7.33 Å, β = 104.5°, space group Cm is relatively abundant in this occurrence. Another polytype 3T, a = 5.51, c = 21.32 Å, space group P31 was also found. Both polytypes occur separately or in mixed, mostly 1M dominant crystals. Some 1M polytype crystals are twinned by order 3 reticular merohedry with a 120° rotation along the chex axis as the twin operation. A rare 1M+3T mixed crystal with 1M part twinned also contains a small amount of subfamily C. A possible presence of the most common 1T polytype of this subfamily cannot be confirmed because of overlap of the characteristic reflections with those of 3T. Several completely disordered crystals produced diffuse streaks instead of discrete characteristic reflections on the RS sections. The EPMA revealed Fe, Si, traces of Mg, Al, S, and Cl. One black crystal originally considered to be cronstedtite was identified as (111) twinned sphalerite. Some crystals of cronstedtite are covered partially by a honey-brown crust or small crystals of siderite.

The crystal structure of cronstedtite-2H2 was refined in a hexagonal cell, space group P63, Z = 2, using two acicular crystals from Wheal Maudlin, Cornwall, England, and from Pribram, Czech Republic. The Wheal Maudlin sample has the chemical composition $\left({\text{Fe}}_{2.291}^{2+}{\text{Fe}}_{0.709}^{3+}\right)\left({\text{Si}}_{1.298}{\text{Fe}}_{0.707}^{3+}{\text{Al}}_{0.004}\right){\text{O}}_5{\left(\text{OH}\right)}_4$ and the Příbram sample has the composition $\left({\text{Fe}}_{2.269}^{2+}{\text{Fe}}_{0.731}^{3+}\right)\left({\text{Si}}_{1.271}{\text{Fe}}_{0.724}^{3+}{\text{Al}}_{0.005}\right){\text{O}}_5{\left(\text{OH}\right)}_4$. The results of refinements are as follows: a = 5.500(1), c = 14.163(2) Å, V = 371.08(8) Å3, R = 3.83%, from 381 independent reflections, and a = 5.4927(1), c = 14.1481(2) Å, V = 369.70(4) Å3, R = 4.77%, from 1088 independent reflections for the Wheal Maudlin and Příbram samples, respectively. The best Fovs.Fc agreement was achieved when the structure was interpreted as merohedral twin; several possible twinning laws are discussed. The cronstedtite layer consists of one tetrahedral sheet and one octahedral sheet. There is one octahedral (M1) position, occupied by Fe only, and two tetrahedral (T1, T2) positions in the structure. Refinement of occupancy of tetrahedral sites led to values Si:Fe = 0.45:0.55(1) (Wheal Maudlin) and 0.432:0.568(8) (Příbram) in T1, and Si: Fe = 0.99:0.01(1) (Wheal Maudlin) and 0.888:0.112(7) (Příbram) in 72. Whereas the size of T1 is reasonable (average dT1-O = 1.693 Å (Wheal Maudlin), 1.691 Å (Příbram)), T2 is unusually large: (dT2-O= 1.740 Å (Wheal Maudlin), 1.737 Å (Příbram)) with respect to the small or almost zero Fe content. As an explanation, an alternative structure model comprising a certain amount of vacancies in T2 is presented. The tetrahedral rotation angle α is highly positive (+12.1° and +12.5° for the Wheal Maudlin and Příbram samples, respectively), and the layer belongs to the Franzini type A. Distortion parameters of octahedra and tetrahedra are given for both samples. One hydrogen atom engaged in the hydrogen bond was located in the Wheal Maudlin sample.

This article takes the practice of twinning as an entry point for problematising conventional accounts of ‘international friendship’ in the field of International Relations. In particular, the paper zeroes in on three examples of twinning practice, past and present, that have challenged the status quo: twinnings established in opposition to the Contra war in Nicaragua; twinning as an act of recognition for communities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories; and twinning as a vehicle for the recovery and return of sacred artefacts to post-colonial Kenya. Through these examples, it argues for an alternative conceptualisation of international friendship – one that pushes beyond the methodological nationalism and ontological rigidity of dominant approaches.

It is widely recognized that dizygotic twinning (DZT) runs in families, but estimates of heritability from twin and family data are remarkably scarce and vary considerably. Here, we traced seven large, sometimes historical, multigeneration pedigrees from West Africans, fin de siècle French Jews, Canadians (two pedigrees), and the French royal family, in which twin births were recorded. We estimated heritability of twinning (of all types) as zygosity information was not available, diluting the true DZT heritability by a third or so. The estimates in the range 8−20% are remarkably consistent across time (8−19 generations) and ethnicities and also consistent with twin and family estimates.

Alstonite, BaCa(CO3)2, is a mineral described almost two centuries ago. It is widespread in Nature and forms magnificent cm-sized crystals. Notwithstanding, its crystal structure was still unknown. Here, we report the crystal-structure determination of the mineral and discuss it in relationship to other polymorphs of BaCa(CO3)2. Alstonite is trigonal, space group P31m, with unit-cell parameters a = 17.4360(6), c = 6.1295(2) Å, V = 1613.80(9) Å3 and Z = 12. The crystal structure was solved and refined to R1 = 0.0727 on the basis of 4515 reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo) and 195 refined parameters. Alstonite is formed by the alternation, along c, of Ba-dominant and Ca-dominant layers, separated by CO3 groups parallel to {0001}. The main take-home message is to show that not all structure determinations of minerals/compounds can be solved routinely. Some crystals, even large ones displaying excellent diffraction quality, can be twinned in complex ways, thus making their study a crystallographic challenge.

Preferential removal of W relative to other trace elements from zoned, W–Sn–U–Pb-bearing hematite coupled with disturbance of U–Pb isotope systematics is attributed to pseudomorphic replacement via coupled dissolution reprecipitation reaction (CDRR). This hematite has been studied down to the nanoscale to understand the mechanisms leading to compositional and U/Pb isotope heterogeneity at the grain scale. High-Angle Annular Dark Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (HAADF STEM) imaging of foils extracted in situ from three locations across the W-rich to W-depleted domains show lattice-scale defects and crystal structure modifications adjacent to twin planes. Secondary sets of twins and associated splays are common, but wider (up to ~100 nm) inclusion trails occur only at the boundary between the W-rich and W-depleted domains. STEM energy-dispersive X-ray mapping reveals W- and Pb-enrichment along 2–3 nm-wide features defining the twin planes; W-bearing nanoparticles occur along the splays. Tungsten and Pb are both present, albeit at low concentrations, within Na–K–Cl-bearing inclusions along the trails. HAADF STEM imaging of hematite reveals modifications relative to ideal crystal structure. A two-fold hematite superstructure (a = b = c = 10.85 Å; α = β = γ = 55.28°) involving oxygen vacancies was constructed and assessed by STEM simulations with a good match to data. This model can account for significant W release during interaction with fluids percolating through twin planes and secondary structures as CDRR progresses from the zoned domain, otherwise apparently undisturbed at the micrometre scale. Lead remobilisation is confirmed here at the nanoscale and is responsible for a disturbance of U/Pb ratios in hematite affected by CDRR. Twin planes can provide pathways for fluid percolation and metal entrapment during post-crystallisation overprinting. The presence of complex twinning can therefore predict potential disturbances of isotope systems in hematite that will affect its performance as a robust geochronometer.

Research on twinning in developed countries is well documented, but little is known about twinning in less-developed countries due to a lack of data or data limitations. This study examined the level of, trends in and determinants of twin births and their survival under age five in Jordan, using the 2012 Jordan Population and Family Health Survey (JPFHS) data. The birth history of 11,352 women included in the JPFHS provided information on 9859 live births that occurred within five years of the survey date, and these constituted the study subjects. Descriptive statistics, and bivariate and multivariate multilevel logistic regression models were used for data analysis. About 3.5% of the total live births were twins, which is one of the highest rates in developing countries. The twinning rate showed an increasing trend in Jordan, increasing by 45% from 2.4% in 1990 to 3.5% in 2012. Higher maternal age at child birth, higher parity, poor and richer economic status, contraceptive use status, secondary and above level of education of mothers and non-consanguinity were found to be associated with a higher rate of twin births in Jordan. Twins were observed to have a higher risk of low birth weight, being smaller in physical size at birth and at more than four times higher risk of neonatal death compared with singletons. To reduce the risk adverse outcomes of twin pregnancies and further improve maternal and child health, antenatal, delivery and postnatal care should be tailored towards the special needs of twin pregnancies and twin births in Jordan Twin pregnancies should be detected at the early stage of pregnancy so that perinatal outcomes can be improved by frequent prenatal visits, health education, counselling and proper management of peripartum complications.

Baumoite, Ba0.5[(UO2)3O8Mo2(OH)3](H2O)~3, is a new mineral found near Radium Hill, South Australia, where it occurs in a granite matrix associated with baryte, metatorbernite, phurcalite and kaolinite. Baumoite forms thin crusts of yellow to orange–yellow tabular to prismatic crystals. The mineral is translucent with a vitreous lustre and pale yellow streak. Crystals are brittle, the fracture is uneven and show one excellent cleavage. The Mohs hardness is ~2½. The calculated density is 4.61 g/cm3. Optically, baumoite crystals are biaxial (–), with α = 1.716(4), β = 1.761(4), γ = 1.767(4) (white light); and 2Vcalc = 42.2°. Electron microprobe analyses gave the empirical formula Ba0.87Ca0.03Al0.04U2.97Mo2.02P0.03O22H11.99, based on 22 O atoms per formula unit. The eight strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dobs Å (I) (hkl)]: 9.175(39)(12${\bar 1}$), 7.450(100)(020), 3.554(20)(221), 3.365(31)(004, 202), 3.255(31)(123, 30${\bar 2}$), 3.209(28)(12${\bar 4}$), 3.067(33)(30${\bar 3}$, 222, 32${\bar 2}$) and 2.977(20)(142). Single-crystal X-ray studies (R1 = 5.85% for 1892 main reflections) indicate that baumoite is monoclinic, superspace group X2/m(a0g)0s with X = (0,½,0,½), with unit-cell parameters: a = 9.8337(3), b = 15.0436(5), c = 14.2055(6) Å, β = 108.978(3)°, V = 1987.25(13) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure is twinned and incommensurately modulated and is based upon sheets of U6+ and Mo6+ polyhedra of unique topology. Four independent cationic sites partially occupied by Ba atoms are located between the sheets, together with H2O molecules.

High-purity niobium single crystals of five different orientations were compressed at 77 K to 2–4% plastic strain to investigate the mechanisms operative in the initial stage of yielding. The crystals deformed in the direction close to the [001] axis exhibit predominant slip on the high-stressed (101) and a much lower stressed $\left( {0\bar{1}1} \right)$ plane. The expected slip on the $\left( {\bar{1}01} \right)$ plane is nearly homogeneously distributed with only a few sharp slip traces corresponding to localized slip. The samples compressed along center-triangle orientations and those close to the $\left[ {011} \right] - \left[ {\bar{1}11} \right]$ edge deform predominantly by twinning on {112}〈111〉 systems with some contribution from slip on the $\left( {\bar{1}01} \right)\left[ {\bar{1}\bar{1}\bar{1}} \right]$ system with the highest Schmid factor. A majority of twins exhibit internal contrast due to alternating slip on $\left( {\bar{1}01} \right)$ and $\left( {0\bar{1}1} \right)$ planes. No slip traces are observed in the matrix adjacent to the twin, which implies that twin boundaries are impenetrable obstacles for the motion of dislocations.

Predictions of the mechanical response of polycrystalline metals and underlying microstructure evolution and deformation mechanisms are critically important for the manufacturing and design of metallic components, especially those made of new advanced metals that aim to outperform those in use today. In this review article, recent advancements in modeling deformation processing-microstructure evolution and in microstructure–property relationships of polycrystalline metals are covered. While some notable examples will use standard crystal plasticity models, such as self-consistent and Taylor-type models, the emphasis is placed on more advanced full-field models such as crystal plasticity finite elements and Green’s function-based models. These models allow for nonhomogeneity in the mechanical fields leading to greater insight and predictive capability at the mesoscale. Despite the strides made, it still remains a mesoscale modeling challenge to incorporate in the same model the role of influential microstructural features and the dynamics of underlying mechanisms. The article ends with recommendations for improvements in computational speed.

The crystal structure of ulrichite, CaCu2+(UO2)(PO4)2·4H2O (space group P21/c, a = 12.784(3), b = 6.996(1), c = 13.007(3)Å, β = 91.92(1)°, V = 1162.7(4)Å3, Z = 4) was redetermined using X-ray diffraction data measured from a twinned crystal with Mo-Kα radiation and a CCD area detector (2510 unique reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo), R1 = 8.8%). Ulrichite crystallizes in space group P21/c rather than C2/m reported previously. The newly determined atomic positions give reasonable coordination polyhedra. One unique Ca atom is irregularly coordinated by eight O atoms (<Ca–O> = 2.46 Å). One unique U atom shows a {2+5} coordination with characteristic bond angles and lengths (1.806(11)Å, 1.842(12)Å and five bonds between 2.252(15) and 2.441(11)Å). Furthermore, the structure contains groups in which strongly elongated CuO6 ‘octahedra’ (also describable as CuO4 squares) are corner-linked to two PO4 tetrahedra via two opposite, equatorial O atoms. Edge- and corner-sharing UO7, CaO8 and PO4 polyhedra form heteropolyhedral sheets parallel to (001) that are linked to adjacent sheets via the CuO6 ‘octahedra’ and hydrogen bonds.

Many natural minerals and synthetic materials display twin microstructures resulting from displacive phase transitions. These microstructures may be removed temporarily from the sample by heating above the relevant transition temperature, though the twinning generally returns on subsequent cooling.

In anorthoclase, the spatial distributions of twins before and after brief annealing above TC are often identical. This property appears to be a common feature in many materials which undergo ferroelastic phase transitions, and is known as ‘twin memory’. The atomic mechanisms responsible for this twin memory may be investigated by studying the annealing regimes required to remove the memory effect; how long must a sample be annealed, and at what temperature, to induce ‘twin amnesia’.

High-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been used to investigate twin memory and twin amnesia in anorthoclase. In anorthoclase, the primary constraint on twin amnesia is thermodynamic, rather than kinetic. The critical temperature to induce amnesia correlates well with the top of the (Na, K) solvus in disordered alkali feldspar. For this reason, the proposed mechanism for twin memory involves the segregation of alkali cations in thin lamellae at the twin boundaries.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to study the aluminate sodalite, Ca8[Al12O24](CrO4)2. This aluminate sodalite has four polymorphs: one cubic, one modulated, one tetragonal, and an orthorhombic cell that arise from ordering of [Ca4·CrO4]6+ clusters that occur in the cages of the structure. The transition temperatures are 432, 453, and 610 K. The cell parameters for the orthorhombic phase, with the cubic cell parameter of a = b = c = 9.222 Å, are 3a × 2b × c. Transformation twins are formed at 432 K during the transition from the tetragonal to the orthorhombic phase. The twin plane is {110} in the cubic cell, and {320} in the orthorhombic cell.
