Dichotomous IRT models can be viewed as families of stochastically ordered distributions of responses to test items. This paper explores several properties of such distributions. In particular, it is examined under what conditions stochastic order in families of conditional distributions is transferred to their inverse distributions, from two families of related distributions to a third family, or from multivariate conditional distributions to a marginal distribution. The main results are formulated as a series of theorems and corollaries which apply to dichotomous IRT models. One part of the results holds for unidimensional models with fixed item parameters. The other part holds for models with random item parameters as used, for example, in adaptive testing or for tests with multidimensional abilities.

In multidimensional item response theory (MIRT), it is possible for the estimate of a subject’s ability in some dimension to decrease after they have answered a question correctly. This paper investigates how and when this type of paradoxical result can occur. We demonstrate that many response models and statistical estimates can produce paradoxical results and that in the popular class of linearly compensatory models, maximum likelihood estimates are guaranteed to do so. In light of these findings, the appropriateness of multidimensional item response methods for assigning scores in high-stakes testing is called into question.

In this paper, we use an information theoretic approach called cumulative residual extropy (CRJ) to compare mixed used systems. We establish mixture representations for the CRJ of mixed used systems and then explore the measure and comparison results among these systems. We compare the mixed used systems based on stochastic orders and stochastically ordered conditional coefficients vectors. Additionally, we derive bounds for the CRJ of mixed used systems with independent and identically distributed components. We also propose the Jensen-cumulative residual extropy (JCRJ) divergence to calculate the complexity of systems. To demonstrate the utility of these results, we calculate and compare the CRJ and JCRJ divergence of mixed used systems in the Exponential model. Furthermore, we determine the optimal system configuration based on signature under a criterion function derived from JCRJ in the exponential model.

Information generating functions (IGFs) have been of great interest to researchers due to their ability to generate various information measures. The IGF of an absolutely continuous random variable (see Golomb, S. (1966). The information generating function of a probability distribution. IEEE Transactions in Information Theory, 12(1), 75–77) depends on its density function. But, there are several models with intractable cumulative distribution functions, but do have explicit quantile functions. For this reason, in this work, we propose quantile version of the IGF, and then explore some of its properties. Effect of increasing transformations on it is then studied. Bounds are also obtained. The proposed generating function is studied especially for escort and generalized escort distributions. Some connections between the quantile-based IGF (Q-IGF) order and well-known stochastic orders are established. Finally, the proposed Q-IGF is extended for residual and past lifetimes as well. Several examples are presented through out to illustrate the theoretical results established here. An inferential application of the proposed methodology is also discussed

We show that for arrival processes, the ‘harmonic new better than used in expectation’ (HNBUE) (or ‘harmonic new worse than used in expectation’, HNWUE) property is a sufficient condition for inequalities between the time and customer averages of the system if the state of the system between arrival epochs is stochastically decreasing and convex and the lack of anticipation assumption is satisfied. HNB(W)UE is a wider class than NB(W)UE, being the largest of all available classes of distributions with positive (negative) aging properties. Thus, this result represents an important step beyond existing result on inequalities between time and customer averages, which states that for arrival processes, the NB(W)UE property is a sufficient condition for inequalities.

This paper examines the preservation of several aging classes of lifetime distributions in the formation of coherent and mixed systems with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) or identically distributed (i.d.) component lifetimes. The increasing mean inactivity time class and the decreasing mean time to failure class are developed for the lifetime of systems with possibly dependent and i.d. component lifetimes. The increasing likelihood ratio property is also discussed for the lifetime of a coherent system with i.i.d. component lifetimes. We present sufficient conditions satisfied by the signature of a coherent system with i.i.d. components with exponential distribution, under which the decreasing mean remaining lifetime, the increasing mean inactivity time, and the decreasing mean time to failure are all satisfied by the lifetime of the system. Illustrative examples are presented to support the established results.

In this paper we consider a new generalized finite mixture model formed by dependent and identically distributed (d.i.d.) components. We then establish results for the comparisons of lifetimes of two such generalized finite mixture models in two different cases: (i) when the two mixture models are formed from two random vectors $\textbf{X}$ and $\textbf{Y}$ but with the same weights, and (ii) when the two mixture models are formed with the same random vectors but with different weights. Because the lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems and coherent systems are special cases of the mixture model considered, we used the established results to compare the lifetimes of k-out-of-n systems and coherent systems with respect to the reversed hazard rate and hazard rate orderings.

Extended gamma processes have been seen as a flexible extension of standard gamma processes in the recent reliability literature, for the purpose of cumulative deterioration modeling. The probabilistic properties of the standard gamma process have been well explored since the 1970s, whereas those of its extension remain largely unexplored. In particular, stochastic comparisons between degradation levels modeled by standard gamma processes and ageing properties for the corresponding level-crossing times are now well understood. The aim of this paper is to explore similar properties for extended gamma processes and see which ones can be broadened to this new context. As a by-product, new stochastic comparisons for convolutions of gamma random variables are also obtained.

Providing optimal strategies for maintaining technical systems in good working condition is an important goal in reliability engineering. The main aim of this paper is to propose some optimal maintenance policies for coherent systems based on some partial information about the status of components in the system. For this purpose, in the first part of the paper, we propose two criteria under which we compute the probability of the number of failed components in a coherent system with independent and identically distributed components. The first proposed criterion utilizes partial information about the status of the components with a single inspection of the system, and the second one uses partial information about the status of component failure under double monitoring of the system. In the computation of both criteria, we use the notion of the signature vector associated with the system. Some stochastic comparisons between two coherent systems have been made based on the proposed concepts. Then, by imposing some cost functions, we introduce new approaches to the optimal corrective and preventive maintenance of coherent systems. To illustrate the results, some examples are examined numerically and graphically.

In this paper, we discuss stochastic orderings of lifetimes of two heterogeneous parallel and series systems with heterogeneous dependent components having generalized Birnbaum–Saunders distributions. The comparisons presented here are based on the vector majorization of parameters. The ordering results are established in some special cases for the generalized Birnbaum–Saunders distribution based on the multivariate elliptical, normal, t, logistic, and skew-normal kernels. Further, we use these results by considering Archimedean copulas to model the dependence structure among systems with generalized Birnbaum–Saunders components. These results have been used to derive some upper and lower bounds for survival functions of lifetimes of parallel and series systems.

Log-concavity [log-convexity] and their various properties play an increasingly important role in probability, statistics, operations research and other fields. In this paper, we first establish general preservation theorems of log-concavity and log-convexity under operator $\phi \longmapsto T(\phi , \theta )=\mathbb {E}[\phi (X_\theta )]$, θ ∈ Θ, where Θ is an interval of real numbers or an interval of integers, and the random variable $X_\theta$ has a distribution function belonging to the family $\{F_\theta , \theta \in \Theta \}$ possessing the semi-group property. The proofs are based on the theory of stochastic comparisons and weighted distributions. The main results are applied to some special operators, for example, operators occurring in reliability, Bernstein-type operators and Beta-type operators. Several known results in the literature are recovered.

We present some inequalities for the mappings defined by Dragomir [‘Two mappings in connection to Hadamard’s inequalities’, J. Math. Anal. Appl.167 (1992), 49–56]. We analyse known inequalities connected with these mappings using a recently developed method connected with stochastic orderings and Stieltjes integrals. We show that some of these results are optimal and others may be substantially improved.

This paper presents a flexible family which we call the $\alpha$ -mixture of survival functions. This family includes the survival mixture, failure rate mixture, models that are stochastically closer to each of these conventional mixtures, and many other models. The $\alpha$ -mixture is endowed by the stochastic order and uniquely possesses a mathematical property known in economics as the constant elasticity of substitution, which provides an interpretation for $\alpha$ . We study failure rate properties of this family and establish closures under monotone failure rates of the mixture’s components. Examples include potential applications for comparing systems.

We show that the kth order statistic from a heterogeneous sample of n ≥ k exponential random variables is larger than that from a homogeneous exponential sample in the sense of star ordering, as conjectured by Xu and Balakrishnan [14]. As a consequence, we establish hazard rate ordering for order statistics between heterogeneous and homogeneous exponential samples, resolving an open problem of Pǎltǎnea [11]. Extensions to general spacings are also presented.

We study the impact of a random environment on lifetimes of coherent systems with dependent components. There are two combined sources of this dependence. One results from the dependence of the components of the coherent system operating in a deterministic environment and the other is due to dependence of components of the system sharing the same random environment. We provide different sets of sufficient conditions for the corresponding stochastic comparisons and consider various scenarios, namely, (i) two different (as a specific case, identical) coherent systems operate in the same random environment; (ii) two coherent systems operate in two different random environments; (iii) one of the coherent systems operates in a random environment and the other in a deterministic environment. Some examples are given to illustrate the proposed reasoning.

Many wear processes used for modeling accumulative deterioration in a reliability context are nonhomogeneous Lévy processes and, hence, have independent increments, which may not be suitable in an application context. In this work we consider Lévy processes transformed by monotonous functions to overcome this restriction, and provide a new state-dependent wear model. These transformed Lévy processes are first observed to remain tractable Markov processes. Some distributional properties are derived. We investigate the impact of the current state on the future increment level and on the overall accumulated level from a stochastic monotonicity point of view. We also study positive dependence properties and stochastic monotonicity of increments.

This paper considers two variants of M/G/1 queues with impatient customers, which are denoted by M/G/1+Gw and M/G/1+Gs. In the M/G/1+Gw queue customers have deadlines for their waiting times, and they leave the system immediately if their services do not start before the expiration of their deadlines. On the other hand, in the M/G/1+Gs queue customers have deadlines for their sojourn times, where customers in service also immediately leave the system when their deadlines expire. In this paper we derive comparison results for performance measures of these models. In particular, we show that if the service time distribution is new better than used in expectation, then the loss probability in the M/G/1+Gs queue is greater than that in the M/G/1+Gw queue.

The Samaniego signature is a relevant tool for studying the performance of a system whose component lifetimes are exchangeable. It is well known that the stochastic ordering of the signatures of two systems implies the same for the respective system lifetimes. We prove that the reverse claim is not true when the component lifetimes are independent and identically distributed. There exist small proportions of systems with stochastically ordered lifetimes whose signatures are not ordered. We present a simple procedure in order to check whether the system lifetimes are stochastically ordered even if their signatures are not comparable.

This paper studies the allocation of active redundancies to coherent systems on the context that the base and redundancy components have mutual independent lifetimes. For systems with two symmetric components and systems with one component's minimal cut sets (minimal path sets) covering those of another, we derive sufficient conditions to compare the resultant system lifetimes. Some numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

For many practical situations in reliability engineering, components in the system are usually dependent since they generally work in a collaborative environment. In this paper we build sufficient conditions for comparing two coherent systems under different random environments in the sense of the usual stochastic, hazard rate, reversed hazard rate, and likelihood ratio orders. Applications and numerical examples are provided to illustrate all the theoretical results established here.
