V5579 Sgr was a fast nova discovered in 2008 April 18.784 UT. We present the optical spectroscopic observations of the nova observed from the Castanet Tolosan, SMARTS, and CTIO observatories spanning over 2008 April 23 to 2015 May 11. The spectra are dominated by hydrogen Balmer, Fe II, and O I lines with P-Cygni profiles in the early phase, typical of an Fe II class nova. The spectra show He I and He II lines along with forbidden lines from N, Ar, S, and O in the nebular phase. The nova showed a pronounced dust formation episode that began about 20 days after the outburst. The dust temperature and mass were estimated using the WISE data from spectral energy distribution (SED) fits. The PAH-like features are also seen in the nova ejecta in the mid-infrared Gemini spectra taken 522 d after the discovery. Analysis of the light curve indicates values of $t_2$ and $t_3$ about 9 and 13 days, respectively, placing the nova in the category of fast nova. The best-fit cloudy model of the early decline phase JHK spectra obtained on 2008 May 3 and the nebular optical spectrum obtained on 2011 June 2 shows a hot white dwarf source with $T_{BB}$ $\sim$ 2.6 $\times$ 10$^5$ K having a luminosity of 9.8 $\times$ 10$^{36}$ ergs s$^{-1}$. Our abundance analysis shows that the ejecta is significantly enhanced relative to solar, O/H = 32.2, C/H = 15.5, and N/H = 40.0 in the early decline phase and O/H = 5.8, He/H = 1.5, and N/H = 22.0 in the nebular phase.

The X-ray sky is dominated by luminous galactic sources, variable on time-scales from milliseconds to years. Their eruptive behaviour is now under continuous monitoring by MAXI, Swift, INTEGRAL and other high-energy missions, and representing a superb exemplar of time-domain astronomy. Understanding the astrophysics of such variability requires multi-wavelength follow-up studies from a suite of ground- and space-based facilities. As SALT is a 100% Q-scheduled telescope, one of its key scientific capabilities is related to Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) programmes, and there has been a dedicated SALT Large Programme on Transients in place since 2016, a significant fraction of which has been devoted to the follow-up of X-ray binary transients. This Workshop addressed questions of how such programmes should evolve once the era of MeerKAT and MeerLICHT begins in ∼2018-9 (as well as other huge surveys at optical wavelengths), identifying the range of facilities that would be needed, and the key science topics. There is a clear and growing need for responses to transients to be faster (within minutes if possible), and to be multi-wavelength (particularly in radio and X-ray). Furthermore, extended ongoing coverage of such events (days to weeks for the next ‘V404 Cyg’-type outburst) will be needed for maximum astrophysical return. That would require careful management and coordination of a wide range of ground- and space-based facilities, and optimising coverage against logistical constraints that are often conflicting.

Interacting binaries provide unique parameter regimes, both rapid rotation and tidal distortion, in which to test stellar dynamo theories and study the resulting magnetic activity. Close binaries such as cataclysmic variables (CVs) have been found to differentially rotate, and so can provide testbeds for tidal dissipation efficiency in stellar convective envelopes, with implications for both CV and planet-star evolution. Furthermore, CVs show evidence of preferential emergence of magnetic flux tubes towards the companion star, as well as large, long-lived prominences that form preferentially within the binary geometry. Moreover, RS CVn binaries also show clear magnetic interactions between the two components in the form of coronal X-ray emission. Here, we review several examples of magnetic interactions in different types of close binaries.

We review the models of magnetic braking for synchronously rotating magnetic cataclysmic variables, and discuss the implications of magnetic braking for orbital evolution and the upper limit to the magnetic fields (about 70 MG) of the observed AM Herculis systems.

The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO Public Survey is an ongoing time-series, near-infrared (IR) survey of the Galactic bulge and an adjacent portion of the inner disk, covering 562 square degrees of the sky, using ESO's VISTA telescope. The survey has provided superb multi-color photometry in 5 broadband filters (Z, Y, J, H, and Ks), leading to the best map of the inner Milky Way ever obtained, particularly in the near-IR. The main part of the survey, which is focused on the variability in the Ks-band, is currently underway, with bulge fields observed between 34 and 73 times, and disk fields between 34 and 36 times. When the survey is complete, bulge (disk) fields will have been observed up to a total of 100 (60) times, providing unprecedented depth and time coverage in the near-IR. Here we provide a first overview of stellar variability in the VVV data.

The field of time-domain astronomy is expected to enjoy a golden age during this decade. However, the traditional method for the classification of transient candidates using spectra obtained with medium- to large-aperture telescopes is extremely time consuming and struggling to keep up with the discovery rate. The Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) Machine uses a new approach in order to overcome this shortcoming.

Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) models of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi are presented, along with simple models for circumstellar absorption lines. The evolution of the model sodium line is similar to the behaviour in some Type Ia SNe, e.g. SN2006X.

Intermediate polars (IPs) represent more than 70% of all cataclysmic variables (CVs) detected by INTEGRAL in hard X-ray. Nevertheless, only a quarter of all known IPs have been detected in this spectral band. This fact can be related to the activity state of these object ruled by changes in the mass accretion rate.

The Fermi Flare Advocate (also known as Gamma-ray Sky Watcher, FA-GSW) service provides a daily quick-look analysis and review of the high-energy gamma-ray sky seen by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The duty offers alerts for potentially new gamma-ray sources, interesting transients and flares. A weekly digest containing the highlights about the GeV gamma-ray sky is published in the web-based Fermi Sky Blog. During the first 3 years of all-sky survey, more than 150 Astronomical Telegrams, several alerts to the TeV Cherenkov telescopes, and targets of opportunity to Swift and other observatories, were realized. That increased the rate of simultaneous multi-frequency observing campaigns and the level of international cooperation. Many gamma-ray flares from blazars (such as extraordinary outbursts of 3C 454.3, intense flares of PKS 1510-089, 4C 21.35, PKS 1830-211, AO 0235+164, PKS 1502+106, 3C 279, 3C 273, PKS 1622-253), short/long flux duty cycles, unidentified transients near the Galactic plane (like J0910-5041, J0109+6134, the Galactic center region), flares associated with Galactic sources (like the Crab nebula, the nova V407 Cyg, the microquasar Cyg X-3), emission of the quiet and active sun, were observed by Fermi and communicated by FA-GSWs.

U Scorpii was observed in outburst for the tenth time in January 2010. We obtained optical and near-infrared spectroscopy from which we derive a helium abundance of N(He)/N(H) = 0.056±0.020 from the most reliable lines available; this is lower than most other estimates and indicates that the secondary is not helium-rich, as previous studies have suggested. Velocities are found to be up to 14,000 km s−1 in broad components and up to 1,800 km s−1 in narrow line components. The reddening of U Sco is found to be E(B-V) = 0.14 ± 0.12.

The recurrent nova RS Oph is a long period (~455 days) binary system consisting of a hot white dwarf with mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit and an M-type giant secondary. Here we present the results of photometric observations of this nova which were made during recent years with the telescopes of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute in Crimea.

Non-spherically symmetric distributions of ejected gas are often observed in classical nova remnants. However, it is unclear if these asymmetries could be produced from nova explosions. Spectra in the nebular phase can provide information on the kinematics of ejected materials. Classical nova KT Eri was discovered on November 2009. It is considered a candidate for a recurrent nova based on the high expansion velocity and rapid decline of its light curve. In order to investigate the velocity field of ejected gas in the system, we performed optical spectroscopic observations from 2010 September to 2010 December at Koyama Astronomical Observatory. We noticed the strong [O III] and He II lines in the spectra on September 1, which suggests that the nova had already entered the nebular phase. It is notable that the [O III] lines showed complex profiles with at least six peaks on September 1. Those features can be de-convolved into four velocity components (−2,000 km s−1, −1,000 km s−1, +700 km s−1, and +1,800 km s−1) of doublet [O III] λ4959 and λ5007.

In this review, I summarize the observational attempts made so far to unveil the nature of the progenitor system(s) of Type Ia supernovae. In particular, I focus on the most recent developments that followed the claimed detection of circumstellar material around a few events, and on the link this possibly establishes with recurrent novae. In this framework, I then discuss the case of RS Oph, what we know of its circumstellar environment, and what this is telling us about its supposed connection to Type Ia supernovae explosions.

Optical and near-infrared observations of novae give us useful information for understanding the diversity of nova eruptions. Classical nova V1723 Aql was discovered by F. Kabashima and K. Nishiyama on 2010 September 11. We have conducted photometric and spectroscopic observations of V1723 Aql in both optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength regions since its discovery. The V-band decline time by 2 mag after the maximum, t2, was ~12 d. The apparent Fe II emission lines were also seen in the optical spectra. The Rc- and Ic-band light curves exhibited rapid declines (0.16 mag d−1 in Rc) 20 days after the visual maximum, while the NIR (J, H, and Ks) showed slow decline rates (~0.07 mag d−1). This rapid reddening suggests that dust particles formed during the very early phase of the expansion in V1723 Aql.

Intermediate polars represent a major fraction of all cataclysmic variables detected by INTEGRAL in hard X-rays. Nevertheless, only 25% of all known intermediate polars have been was detected in hard X-rays. This fact can be related to the activity state of these close interacting binaries. Multi-frequency (optical to X-ray) investigation of intermediate polars is essential to understand the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed activity of these objects.

I review various phenomena associated with mass-accreting white dwarfs (WDs) in relation to progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The WD mass can be estimated from light curve analysis in multiwavelength bands based on the theory of optically thick winds. In the single degenerate scenario of SNe Ia, two main channels are known, i.e., WD + main sequence (MS) channel and WD + red giant (RG) channel. In each channel, a typical binary undergoes three evolutionary stages before explosion, i.e., the wind phase, supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase, and recurrent nova phase, in this order because the accretion rate decreases with time as the companion mass decreases. For some accreting WDs we can identify the corresponding stage of evolution. Intermittent supersoft X-ray sources like RX J0513.9−6951 and V Sge correspond to wind phase objects. For the SSS phase, CAL 87-type objects correspond to the WD+MS channel. For the WD + RG channel, soft X-ray observations of early type galaxies give statistical evidence of SSS phase binaries. Recurrent novae of U Sco-type and RS Oph-type correspond to the WD + MS channel and WD + RG channel, respectively. The majority of recurrent novae host a very massive WD (≳ 1.35 M⊙) and often show a plateau phase in their optical light curves corresponding to the long-lasting supersoft X-ray phase. These properties are indications of increasing WD masses.

We present Spitzer spectroscopy of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi obtained on several occasions between 2006 and 2009. The spectra show variability in the silicate dust features at 9.7 μm and 18 μm, which form in the wind of the red giant in the system. We fit the spectra with Dusty models and find changes in the dust temperature, due to changes in the luminosity of the central source. The mass-loss rate of the secondary is a few 10−7M⊙yr−1, typical of a red giant of its type.

Two recurrent novae (RNe) that do not host red giants were observed in outburst at the beginning of 2009 and 2010, respectively. The first nova was LMC 2009a, and the second one was U Scorpii. Nova LMC 2009a was a relatively slow RN, and it was quite luminous both at optical and X-ray wavelengths. U Sco is the fastest nova ever recorded. Its supersoft X-ray phase started a couple of weeks after optical maximum and lasted for about a month, while for Nova LMC 2009a this phase started four months after maximum and lasted for 5 months. For both novae, the first X-ray spectrum taken while the luminous supersoft X-ray source was beginning to emerge is remarkably similar with broad and prominent emission lines of nitrogen and carbon accounting for at least 30% of the X-ray flux. Blue-shifted absorption and red-shifted emission form apparent P-Cyg profiles. We attribute the emission features to the ejecta and show evidence that they are largely due to collisional ionization. In the case of U Sco the absorption lines were embedded in the emission features after the first observation. We find evidence that in U Scorpii we were observing the Thomson reflected spectrum at a distance of ≃ 3 R⊙ from the white dwarf rather than the atmosphere itself. For both novae, the peak temperature was remarkably high, probably close to 900,000 K for U Sco, and about 600,000 K for Nova LMC 2009a. We suggest that these two objects represent different stages of RNe secular evolution.

Recurrent novae (RNe) belong to the group of cataclysmic variables that exhibit nova outbursts at intervals on the order of decades. They are rare, with 10 Galactic RNe known to date. Two are known in the LMC, while there are a few suspected RNe in M31. Nova outburst models require a high accretion rate on a massive white dwarf to explain the recurring nova outbursts, making this class of objects one of the most likely progenitor binary systems of Type Ia supernovae. The observational properties of the known Galactic recurrent novae are presented here, together with some discussion on the recent outbursts of RS Ophiuchi (2006), U Scorpii (2010), and T Pyxidis (2011).

An archival search for extragalactic novae was carried out using the data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Twenty-seven galaxies were examined where most of the targets are beyond the Local Group. Nova rates were calculated for the target galaxies and combined with other known nova rates to show dependence on galaxy types. Here we present the nova detections for six galaxies from our object list.
