Sepiolite-based composites have great potential for application as flame-retardant and thermal-insulation material but their application and development are limited by poor mechanical properties. The objective of the present study was to combine polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) with sepiolite (Sep) to improve its aerogel strength. A universal testing machine, thermogravimetry, and microcalorimetry were used to investigate the mechanical properties, thermal-stability, and flame-retardant properties, respectively, of aerogels. The results indicated that KH-550 can enhance effectively the mechanical properties and flame retardancy of aerogels. The compressive modulus of PVA/Sep vs KH-550/PVA/Sep aerogel was 209.28 vs. 474.43 kPa, the LOI index changed from 26.4 to 30.4%. The porosity of the aerogels was > 96% and the density was < 0.05 g/cm3. The thermal conductivity remained at between 0.0340 and 0.0390 W/(m·K), and the aerogel could recover to > 85% after a 50% compressive deformation. These data indicated that Sep-based aerogel would act as a flame retardant and a thermal insulating material with excellent mechanical properties.

Pyrophyllite is an important layered phyllosilicate material that is used in many fields due to its beneficial physicochemical and mechanical properties. Due to the presence of multiple defects in pyrophyllite, an in-depth investigation was conducted using density functional theory to explore the effects of Na(I), K(I), Mg(II), Ca(II) and Fe(II) doping on the atomic structure, electronic properties and mechanical characteristics of pyrophyllite. The results demonstrated that, among the studied defects, K(I) doping had the most pronounced effects on the lattice constants and bonding lengths of pyrophyllite, while the least significant effects were observed in the case of Fe(II) doping. Moreover, the partial and total densities of states and band structures of the five kinds of doped pyrophyllite also changed significantly due to the redistribution of electrons. Finally, the elastic constants of the doped pyrophyllite were lower than that of the undoped pyrophyllite. Doping with Na(I), K(I), Mg(II), Ca(II) and Fe(II) reduced the deformation resistance, stiffness and elastic wave velocity but increased the degree of anisotropy in pyrophyllite. The observed effects on the mechanical properties of pyrophyllite followed the order: Mg(II) > Fe(II) > Ca(II) >K(I) > Na(I).

Flexibility is one of the important mechanical performance parameters of stent. The flexibility of tapered stents, especially self-expanding tapered stents, remains unknown. In this study, we developed a new selfexpanding tapered stent for tapered arteries and performed a numerical investigation of stent flexibility by using finite element method. The effect of stent design parameters, including taper and link space width, on stent flexibility was studied. The flexibility of the proposed stent was also compared with that of traditional cylindrical stents. Results show that the tapered stent is more flexible than the traditional cylindrical stent. Furthermore, the flexibility of the tapered stent increases with increasing stent taper and stent link space width. The increase in the stent link space width can contribute to the reduction in the peak stress. Therefore, tapered stents with high link space width will improve the stent flexibility. This work provides useful information for improvement of stent design and clinical selection.

Using the first-principles calculation combined with the structure searching method, the ternary intermetallic compound (IMC) (Ni0.66, Zn0.33)3Sn4 with $R\bar 3m$ space group is predicted. The energetic, dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stabilities of the (Ni0.66, Zn0.33)3Sn4 IMC are confirmed. The mechanical, thermodynamic, and electronic characteristics at different pressures from 0 to 20 Gpa for the (Ni0.66, Zn0.33)3Sn4 IMC are also investigated. The results show that the (Ni0.66, Zn0.33)3Sn4 IMC possesses a ductile trait within 20 Gpa and that pressurization can increase its elastic modulus, hardness, anisotropy, Debye temperature, and minimum thermal conductivity. At a given pressure, the thermal expansion coefficient α increases significantly below 200 K, and then its increase rate approaches a linear mode as the temperature increases. Compared with the case of 0 GPa, the shapes of the total density of states and partial density of states for the (Ni0.66, Zn0.33)3Sn4 IMC change slightly at pressure 20 Gpa, implying that its structure is still stable under pressure 20 GPa.

For achieving flame-retardant AZX912 magnesium alloy with superior mechanical properties, cast ingots were solution-treated at different temperatures of 420–525 °C prior to extrusion at 280 °C. With increasing solution treatment temperature, brittle Al2Ca intermetallic compound changed from a network-like morphology to a spheroidized shape, with an increase in hardness and became unbroken during extrusion. As the solution treatment temperature increased, cracking of Al2Ca particles during tensile deformation tended to be restricted due to hardening and spheroidizing behaviors, and tensile elongation of extruded alloys significantly enhanced from 11.2 to 19.2%. High mechanical strength was maintained with an improvement in ductility when increasing the solution treatment temperature up to 510 °C. The extruded alloy solution-treated at 510 °C exhibited a superior balance between mechanical strength and ductility, with a high ultimate tensile strength of 367 MPa and a good elongation of 16.8%.

CrFeNiTix (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 molar ratio) compositionally complex alloys were fabricated by vacuum arc melting to investigate the microstructure, hardness, and compressive properties. The results revealed that CrFeNiTix alloys consisted of the principal face-centered cubic (FCC) phase and body-centered cubic (BCC) solid solution, with an amount of (Ni, Ti)-rich hexagonal close-packed phase. CrFeNiTix alloys exhibited the typical dendrite. Ti0.2 and Ti0.3 alloys were composed of FCC and BCC solid solutions in the dendrite, as well as ε (Ni3Ti) and R (Ni2.67Ti1.33) phases in the inter-dendrite, simultaneously. For Ti0.4, Ti0.5, and Ti0.6 alloys, (Fe, Cr)-rich solid solution separated out and ε phase transformed into R phase gradually. Meanwhile, TEM analysis indicated that Ti0.4 alloy matrix consisted of the principal FCC phase containing (Ni, Ti)-rich intragranular nanoprecipitates. The hardness values of CrFeNiTix alloys were increased with the addition of Ti content and the high compressive strength of CrFeNiTix alloys was maintained, which was attributed to the solid solution strengthening and precipitation hardening.

Multi-pass warm rolling with falling temperature was proposed and investigated to obtain AZ31 Mg alloy sheets with a fine-grained microstructure. The results indicated that the grain microstructure of AZ31 alloy sheets was successfully refined from 22.1 to 4.5 μm after multi-pass warm rolling with falling temperature and annealing. Compared to the as-received sheet, the multi-pass warm rolled sheets in annealed condition exhibited weaker (0001) basal texture intensity, which resulted in the significantly increased Schmid factor of 〈a〉 basal slip. After multi-pass warm rolling with falling temperature, the rolled sheets in annealed condition also exhibited much better mechanical properties, e.g., higher tensile strength, larger fracture elongation, and higher Erichsen value, especially the IE of 8-pass warm rolled sheet in annealed condition was significantly increased by ∼33% under the same thickness, which could be attributed to the refined grain microstructure and the weakened basal texture.

A comparison of microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of Mg–9Gd–3Y–xZn–0.5Zr (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5) (wt%) alloys under different thermal treatment conditions was investigated in this study. The results showed that the as-cast alloys were comprised of Mg matrix, eutectic compounds and cuboid-shaped phases. The eutectics were Mg24(Gd, Y)5 in the alloys of Zn content ≤0.2 wt%, while (Mg, Zn)3RE in the other three alloys. Fine lamellar long period stacking ordered structure formed inside of matrix of the as-cast Zn-containing alloys and its quantity increases with raising Zn content. Mg12(Gd, Y)Zn was observed at grain boundary of Mg matrix after solution treatment in the alloys of Zn content ≥0.5 wt%. Peak-aged Mg–9Gd–3Y–0.5Zn–0.5Zr alloy exhibited a desirable combination of strength and elongation with 244 MPa in yield strength, 371 MPa in ultimate tensile strength and 3.8% in EL. Meanwhile, the fracture behavior of the studied alloys was also investigated.

Laminate sheets attract increasing attention from researchers and engineers. In this paper, Al/Ti/Al laminate sheets were fabricated by using cryogenic roll bonding for first time. The edge defects, mechanical properties, and interface bonding of laminate sheets by cryogenic roll bonding technique were compared with these by room-temperature roll bonding technique. Results show that there are some edge cracks in laminate sheets by room-temperature roll bonding while they do not appear when subjected to cryogenic roll bonding. The ultimate tensile stress of laminate sheets by cryogenic roll bonding increases up to 36.7% compared to that by room-temperature roll bonding. When laminate sheets are rolled to 0.125 mm from 2.025 mm, the interfaces between Al and Ti layers are bonded well for both cryogenic roll bonding and room-temperature roll bonding. Finally, we discussed the improvement in edge quality and mechanical properties and the mechanism of interface bonding of Al/Ti/Al laminate sheets during cryogenic roll bonding.

Mg–3.0Y–2.5Nd–1.0Gd–xZn–0.5Zr (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0) (wt%) alloys were produced by metallic and sand mold casting to study the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys. The as-cast Zn-free alloys consist of α-Mg and eutectics, whereas the Zn-containing alloys contain additional long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structures. With a higher solidification, the cooling rate brought by metallic mold casting, grains, and eutectics are refined, which enhances the elongation of the alloys, accompanied by a decrease of area fraction of the LPSO structure. Some residual eutectics in the Mg–3.0Y–2.5Nd–1.0Gd–1.0Zn–0.5Zr alloys act as obstacles to grain boundary migration during solution treatment, which make the average grain size 15–20 μm smaller than that of the other alloys and hence improve the elongation of the alloys. The Zn addition brings notable enhancements to mechanical properties of the alloys due to solid solution strengthening of Zn. Especially, the peak-aged Mg–3.0Y–2.5Nd–1.0Gd–0.5Zn–0.5Zr alloys perform with the highest overall tensile properties.

NiAl-based nanocomposites were successfully fabricated by mechanical alloying proceeded vacuum-hot-pressing sintering, and the mechanical and tribological properties of the NiA–NbC composite were investigated. The results show that the nanostructured powder particles with the average size around 5 nm were successfully obtained by a high-energy-ball mill. After sintering, the composites were consisted of B2-ordered NiAl and NbC second phase, and the crystalline size of the NiAl phase was about 20 nm. The relative density, hardness, and compressive strength of nanostructured NiAl materials increased with increasing the Nb content, which can be attributed to the second phase hardening effect of in situ formed NbC particulates and fine grain strengthening of nanocrystalline NiAl phase. Thereafter, the friction coefficient of the NiAl–3NbC composite was lowered by the addition of silver and that is significantly lower than the NiAl intermetallic compound and NiAl–3NbC composite at elevated temperatures, which was attributed to the lubricating films formed in sliding process at elevated temperatures. While the wear rates of NiAl–3NbC–10Ag composites are higher than that of the NiAl–3NbC composites at each test temperature, especially at 500 °C and 700 °C, which might be attributed to the phase variations on the worn surfaces of the composites.

A “RE-free” and I-phase-containing Mg–8Sn-based alloy system was developed and successfully fabricated through the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) process. The influence of the Zn/Al mass ratio on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the as-ECAPed Mg–8Sn–(5,6,7)Zn–2(wt%)Al alloys was investigated using an optical microscope, an X-ray diffractometer, a scanning electron microscope, a transmission electron microscope, and a universal testing machine. Grain size, dynamic recrystallization behavior, and texture were found to be greatly affected by the Zn/Al mass ratio. Furthermore, the ultimate tensile strength (250 MPa) and elongation (14.5%) of the alloy with a Zn/Al mass ratio of 3 were considerably increased compared to those of the as-ECAPed alloys with Zn/Al ratios of 2.5 and 3.5 (ultimate tensile strength and elongation of 215 MPa and 13% and 184 MPa and 10%, respectively). This significant enhancement was attributed to extensive grain boundary strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and higher work hardening capacity as well as texture randomization. The strength and ductility of the as-ECAPed alloys are also discussed in terms of the I-phase and Mg2Sn formation.

In present study, the semi-solid slurry of the AZ91–2Ca–1.5Ce alloy was firstly prepared by gas-bubbling processing and then was formed by die casting and squeeze casting, respectively. The influence of processing parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy was investigated. The results show that increase of gas-flow rate and appropriate pouring temperature can improve the quality of the semi-solid slurry and change the morphology of primary α-Mg particles to rosette-like shape or roundness. Meanwhile, the addition of calcium and cerium refines the as-cast microstructure and dramatically improves the tensile properties, also the strengthening phase Al4Ce exists around the grain boundary. The peak ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength, and elongation of rheo-die casting AZ91–2Ca–1.5Ce alloy are 202 MPa, 154 MPa, and 2.3%, respectively. Especially, compared with conventional liquid die-casting, the UTS and elongation of rheo-die casting AZ91–2Ca–1.5Ce alloy were improved by 8% and 64%, respectively. Meanwhile, the rheo-die casting alloy also showed higher mechanical properties than rheo-squeeze casting alloy, since the higher speed that die casting provided could induce more compact microstructure and remain the semi-solid characteristic better.

The effects of Cu content on the microstructure, mechanical property, and hot tearing susceptibility of die casting Al–22Si–0.4Mg alloy have been investigated. Different Cu contents (1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 wt%) were added in Al–22Si–0.4Mg alloy. In the as-cast microstructure, the amount, volume fraction, and average size of Al2Cu phase increase with more Cu addition. The morphology of grain boundary white Al2Cu phase turns from particle to lump. The UTS (ultimate tensile strength) of Al–22Si–xCu–0.4Mg alloy improves with Cu added, which is mainly caused by the strengthening effect of intergranular Al2Cu. The hot tearing susceptibility apparently rises with Cu content increased, which is due to longer quaternary eutectic reaction time, larger amount of residual intergranular Cu-rich liquid film spreading out over α-Al grain boundary, and higher quaternary eutectic reaction temperature. Considering both the mechanical property and hot tearing susceptibility, optimal Cu content for die casting Al–22Si–0.4Mg alloy found in this paper is 2.5 wt%.

In the present work, the effect of pre-ageing temperature and time variations on the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the Retrogression and re-aging (RRA) treated 7050 has been investigated. The results reveal that the electronic conductivity and hardness of RRA-treated samples are sensitive to the pre-ageing tempers. The RRA-treated samples with 120 °C/2 h pre-ageing +180 °C/2 h retrogression +120 °C/24 h re-ageing temper can be tailored toward a good combination of strength and elongation, while the electrical conductivity of re-ageing samples is also higher than that of 120 °C/24 h pre-ageing RRA-treated samples. With an intermediate pre-ageing temperature of 80 °C/24 h RRA-treated samples possess a higher re-aged electronic conductivity, while no significant differences can be found between hardness of 120 °C/2 h and 120 °C/24 h pre-ageing RRA-treated samples. The variation of hardness and electronic conductivity during retrogression depends on the pre-ageing tempers. For under-aged sample, the retrogression hardness appears a stage of hardness increasing followed by a further decrease in hardness results, owing to disappearance of dissolving stage of fine GP zone and η′ phase during pre-ageing.

Semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) and fully interpenetrating polymer network (full-IPN) hydrogels composed of sodium alginate (SA) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) were prepared with Ca2+ and N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) as the cross-linkers, respectively. The influence of the SA content and crosslinking degree of alginate on thermosensitive, swelling, mechanical, morphological, and thermal properties was investigated in detail. The hydrogels obtained exhibited obvious thermosensitivity and rapid swelling rate. The presence of Ca2+ contributed to the improvement of mechanical properties obviously, without altering the thermosensitivity and network porosity of the hydrogels significantly. The compressive strength of full-IPN hydrogel was improved considerably, while the tensile strength was increased by 308.5% than semi-IPN hydrogel. The Tg of full-IPN dried hydrogel ran up to 142.9 °C with respect to 97.3 °C of pure PNIPAAm, and the improvement indicated that hydrogel with more compact structure was prepared.

(Cu0.47Zr0.45Al0.08)100–xDyx (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4; at.%) metallic glasses with greatly enhanced glass-forming ability (GFA) and plasticity were synthesized based on microalloying technique. The structure, thermal stability, and elastic properties of the BMG samples were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and ultrasonic measurements, respectively. With addition of minor dysprosium (Dy), fully metallic glassy rods with diameters exceeding 20 mm could be successfully fabricated by copper mold casting. In addition, the Cu–Zr–Al–Dy BMGs exhibit good mechanical properties under a compressive deformation mode, i.e., high yield strength of 1735–1906 MPa, Young's modulus of 85–100 GPa, and distinct plastic strain up to 4.02%. The strength and plasticity show remarkable correlations with glass transition temperature and Poisson's ratio, respectively. The role of minor Dy addition in enhancement in GFA and mechanical property of the Cu-rich BMGs is also discussed.

High-chromium heat-resistant steel has been widely used as the key material to improve the condition of steam pressure and temperature in the modern high-efficiency power plants. Despite the use of the steel above 550°C for several decades, its major failure is owing to the creep fracture. In this study, the effect of creep stress on the microstructure in 9–12% Cr steel has been investigated microscopically, and it is clarified that the creep stress enhances precipitation of Laves phase and influences the lath width and dislocation density in lath interior.

Heterogeneous asphalt mixture is treated as a two-phase composite consisting of asphalt mastic, namely a mixture of asphalt and fine aggregates, and coarse aggregates in this paper. A novel three-dimensional (3D) random modeling frame for asphalt mixture is developed, and as its applications, some numerical samples involving various polyhedric coarse aggregates with given gradations are generated. Viscoelastic asphalt mastic is simply characterized by the generalized Maxwell model whose parameters are determined by fitting the uniaxial compressive creep experimental data of asphalt mastic. After validation, the 3D random numerical samples are used to perform a series of numerical experiments in order to evaluate the influences of coarse aggregate distribution, content, average size, size deviation, shape and loading rate on the mechanical behaviors of asphalt mixture quantitatively. Finally, some important conclusions are given.
