We present a new radio detection from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) survey associated with the Reflection Nebula (RN) VdB-80. The radio detection is determined to be a previously unidentified Hii region, now named Lagotis. The RN is located towards Monoceros, centred in the molecular cloud feature known as the ‘Crossbones’. The 944 MHz EMU image shows a roughly semicircular Hii region with an integrated flux density of 30.2$\pm$0.3 mJy. The Hii region is also seen at 1.4 GHz by NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), yielding an estimated spectral index of 0.65$\pm$0.51, consistent with thermal radio emission. Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) data give a distance to the stars associated with the Hii region of $\sim$960 pc. This implies a size of 0.76$\times$0.68($\pm$0.09) pc for the Hii region. We derive an Hii region electron density of the bright radio feature to be 26 cm$^{-3}$, requiring a Lyman-alpha photon flux of $10^{45.6}$ s$^{-1}$, which is consistent with the expected Lyman flux of HD 46060, the B2 ii type star which is the likely ionising star of the region. The derived distance to this region implies that the Crossbones feature is a superposition of two filamentary clouds, with Lagotis embedded in the far cloud.

The Magellanic Stream (MS), a tail of diffuse gas formed from tidal and ram pressure interactions between the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC) and the Halo of the Milky Way, is primarily composed of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI). The deficiency of dust and the diffuse nature of the present gas make molecular formation rare and difficult, but if present, could lead to regions potentially suitable for star formation, thereby allowing us to probe conditions of star formation similar to those at high redshifts. We search for $\text{HCO}^{+}$, HCN, HNC, and C$_2$H using the highest sensitivity observations of molecular absorption data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to trace these regions, comparing with HI archival data from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array (GALFA) HI Survey and the Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS) to compare these environments in the MS to the HI column density threshold for molecular formation in the Milky Way. We also compare the line of sight locations with confirmed locations of stars, molecular hydrogen, and OI detections, though at higher sensitivities than the observations presented here.

We find no detections to a 3$\sigma$ significance, despite four sightlines having column densities surpassing the threshold for molecular formation in the diffuse regions of the Milky Way. Here we present our calculations for the upper limits of the column densities of each of these molecular absorption lines, ranging from $3 \times 10^{10}$ to $1 \times 10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. The non-detection of $\text{HCO}^{+}$ suggests that at least one of the following is true: (i) $X_{\text{HCO}^{+}{}, \mathrm{MS}}$ is significantly lower than the Milky Way value; (ii) that the widespread diffuse molecular gas observed by Rybarczyk (2022b, ApJ, 928, 79) in the Milky Way’s diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) does not have a direct analogue in the MS; (iii) the HI-to-$\text{H}_{2}$ transition occurs in the MS at a higher surface density in the MS than in the LMC or SMC; or (iv) molecular gas exists in the MS, but only in small, dense clumps.

Measurement of internal structures in the prestellar core is essential for understanding the initial conditions prior to star formation. In this work, we study the ammonia lines (NH$_{3}$) (J, K = 1,1 and 2,2) in the central region of the prestellar core L1517B with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope (spatial resolution $\sim$ 3.7′′). Our analysis indicates that the central region of the core is close-to-round in shape obtained both from NH$_{3}$ (1,1) and (2,2) emissions. Radially averaged kinetic temperature ($T_{k}$) is almost constant with a mean value of $\sim$ 9 K. A radially sharp decrease in kinetic temperature ($T_{k}$) has not been observed inside the central dense nucleus of this prestellar core. In addition, we also notice that there is an overall velocity gradient from north-east to south-west direction in this region, which may be indicative of the rotational motion of the core. We then calculate the parameter $\beta$, which is defined as the ratio of rotational energy to gravitational potential energy and find that $\beta$ equals to $\sim$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$; which indicates that rotation has no effect at least inside the central region of the core. We also perform the viral analysis and observe that the central region may be in a stage of contraction. From this study, we also show that turbulence inside the central region is subsonic in nature (sonic Mach number, $M_{s}$ $<$ 1) and has no prominent length-scale dependence. Furthermore, we notice that the decrement of excitation temperature ($T_{ex}$) and column density of NH$_{3}$ from the centre of the core to the outer side with the peak values of $\sim$ 5.6 K and $\sim$ 10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively. In conclusion, this work examines different physical and kinematical properties of the central region of the L1517B prestellar core.

We present observations of the Mopra carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the Southern Galactic Plane, covering Galactic longitudes spanning $l = 250^{\circ}$ ($-110^{\circ}$) to $l = 355^{\circ}$ ($-5^{\circ}$), with a latitudinal coverage of at least $|b|<1^\circ$, totalling an area of $>$210 deg$^{2}$. These data have been taken at 0.6 arcmin spatial resolution and 0.1 km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular gas clouds of the Southern Galactic Plane in the 109–115 GHz $J = 1-0$ transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, and C$^{17}$O.

We present observations of the four $^2 \Pi _{3/2}\,J=3/2$ ground-rotational state transitions of the hydroxyl molecule (OH) along 107 lines of sight both in and out of the Galactic plane: 92 sets of observations from the Arecibo telescope and 15 sets of observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Our Arecibo observations included off-source pointings, allowing us to measure excitation temperature ($T_{\rm ex}$) and optical depth, while our ATCA observations give optical depth only. We perform Gaussian decomposition using the Automated Molecular Excitation Bayesian line-fitting Algorithm ‘Amoeba’ (Petzler, Dawson, & Wardle 2021, ApJ, 923, 261) fitting all four transitions simultaneously with shared centroid velocity and width. We identify 109 features across 38 sightlines (including 58 detections along 27 sightlines with excitation temperature measurements). While the main lines at 1665 and 1667 MHz tend to have similar excitation temperatures (median $|\Delta T_{\rm ex}({\rm main})|=0.6\,$K, 84% show $|\Delta T_{\rm ex}({\rm main})|<2\,$K), large differences in the 1612 and 1720 MHz satellite line excitation temperatures show that the gas is generally not in LTE. For a selection of sightlines, we compare our OH features to associated (on-sky and in velocity) Hi cold gas components (CNM) identified by Nguyen et al. (2019, ApJ, 880, 141) and find no strong correlations. We speculate that this may indicate an effective decoupling of the molecular gas from the CNM once it accumulates.

We analyzed the 3 mm wavelength spectral line survey of 408 clumps from the APEX telescope large area survey of the Galaxy, focusing on the methanol maser transitions. The main goals of this study are (1) to search for new methanol masers, (2) to statistically study the relationship between class I masers and shock tracers, (3) to study the properties between methanol masers and their host clumps, also as a function of their evolutionary stages and, (4) to better constrain the physical conditions using multiple co-spatial line pairs.

We discuss the role that coherence phenomena can have on the intensity variability of spectral lines associated with maser radiation. We do so by introducing the fundamental cooperative radiation phenomenon of (Dicke’s) superradiance and discuss its complementary nature to the maser action, as well as its role in the flaring behaviour of some maser sources. We will consider examples of observational diagnostics that can help discriminate between the two, and identify superradiance as the source of the latter. More precisely, we show how superradiance readily accounts for the different time-scales observed in the multi-wavelength monitoring of the periodic flaring in G9.62+0.20E.

In this current study, we report only the preliminary result of the SiO v=0 Ј=5→4 emission toward W49 N at 230 GHz, observed using the ALMA telescope on September 29, 2018. The position–velocity diagram of the SiO emission shows a structure of a bipolar outflow and has a face-on orientation with an inclination angle of 36.4±0.4 degrees with respect to the line of sight. Here we summarize the calculated physical properties of its outflow.

Over the past 20 years, the Galactic plane has been surveyed at high resolution at wavelengths from 1 micron through to 20 cm. The combination of these surveys has produced large samples of deeply embedded young stars located across the Galactic disc. These continuum surveys are complemented by spectral line surveys of thermal, radio recombination, and molecular maser (OH, H2O, CH3OH) lines. The identified sources cover the whole range of evolutionary stages in the star formation process, allowing the physical properties of these stages to be measured. This information has been used to calculate the star formation efficiency and star formation rate of the Milky Way and to evaluate the impact of environment and location within the disc. This review provides an overview of some of the most significant studies in recent years and discusses how the evolutionary sequence has been used to investigate the correlation of other star formation tracers and maser associations.

High resolution (0."26 × 0."13 (70 × 35 pc)) L-band (18 cm) OH megamaser (OHM) e-Merlin observations of the LIRG Zw049.057 show that the emission is emerging from a low velocity outflowing structure - which is foreground to a fast, dense and collimated molecular outflow detected by ALMA. The extremely dusty compact obscured nucleus (CON) of Zw049.057 has no (or only little) OHM emission associated with it - possibly because of too high number densities that quench the OHM. In contrast we detect 6 cm H2CO emission primarily from the CON-region. We suggest that the OHM-region of Zw049.057 is not directly associated with star formation, but instead occurs in a wide-angle, slow outflow that surrounds the fast and dense outflow. The OHM is pumped by IR emission that likely stems from activities in the nucleus. We briefly discuss how OHM emission can be used as a probe of LIRG-CON galaxies.

Context: Theoretical scenarios describe the phenomenon of mass accumulation by high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs) through disk accretion. Aims: To find out whether the rotation of the core around hyper-compact (HC) HII regions is common Methods: The molecular core G301.1364-00.2249A was selected as the subject of investigation. Observations were carried out on CH3CN, SO2, H29α radio recombination line and continuum emission. Analysis involved the “Moment 0, 1, 2" and “Population-diagram” methods. Result: The structures of G301.1364-00.2249A exhibited clear definition. CH3CN moment 0 images revealed multiple enhanced emission regions and an absorption area. The moment 1 image depicted a velocity gradient from southeast to northwest. Conclusion: The molecular gas has a rotational motion in the direction from the southeast to northwest. The rotational temperature was measured at 293 K.

Single-dish observations at centimeter wavelengths have suggested that the Sgr B2 molecular cloud at the Galactic Center hosts weak maser emission from several large molecules. Here, we present the interferometric observations of the Class I methanol (CH3OH) maser at 84 GHz, the methanimine (CH2NH) maser at 5.29 GHz, and the methylamine (CH2NH2) maser at 4.36 GHz toward Sgr B2 North (N). We use a Bayesian approach to quantitatively assess the observed masing spectral profiles and the excitation conditions. By comparing the spatial origin and extent of maser emission from several molecular species, we find that the new maser transitions have a close spatial relationship with the Class I masers, which suggests a similar collisional pumping mechanism.

High brightness and low interstellar extinction allow the 6.7 GHz methanol (CH3OH) masers to carry the information about what happens in the vicinity of the High-Mass Young Stellar Objects (HMYSOs). Monitoring this transition provides an only one opportunity to catch rare, unusual phenomena. In this paper, I describe three of them: quasi-periodic flares of the red-shifted emission in Cep A HW2, accretion burst in S255-NIRS3 and reappearance of the methanol maser flare in G24.329+0.144.

The depletion of CO molecules is observed in infrared dark clouds. However, only few exsamples are found in pc-scale. An NH3 emission is one of good counter parts of C18O because of similar effective critical density. Our NH3 observations of a molecular filament associated with CMa OB1 or KAG 71, which is a target of Kagoshima Galactic Object survey with Nobeyama 45-m telescope by Mapping in Ammonia lines (KAGONMA) project. Although NH3 data shows similarity in morphology with infrared data suggesting no depletion, C18O in the clumps 4 and 6 are weaker than expected based on NH3 data. After examining the dissipation of the high-density gas, photodissociation, and depletion, we concluded that CO is depleted at least in the clump 4. It is a new example of depletion in pc-scale.

We studied the probability distribution function of the column density (N-PDF) of molecular clouds based on a fit with a multi-log-normal function using the Nobeyama 45-m Cygnus X CO survey data. We identified 124 molecular clouds in 13CO data using the DENDROGRAM and SCIMES algorithms. The N-PDF was constructed for 11 extended (≥ 0.4 deg2) molecular clouds of these identified clouds. We found that every N-PDF is well-fitted with one or two log-normal (LN) distributions. We investigated the distributions of the column density, C18O dense cores, and radio continuum source in each cloud and found that the N-PDF was less correlated with the star-forming activity. The LN N-PDF parameters showed two impressive features. First, the LN distribution at the low-density part had the same mean column density (∼1021.5 cm−2 ) for almost all the molecular clouds. Second, the wider LN distribution tended to show the lower mean density of the structures.

Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are extreme in many ways. The major mergers trigger star formation at very high rates that cause the ISM to be dominated by infrared (IR) photons. We show the ammonia spectra toward the two cores of Arp 220, the nearest ULIRG, in three Very Large Array (VLA) bands (Ku, K, Ka). Typical decay times of the non-metastable transitions ∼ 100 s and are therefore usually difficult to observe. The FIR excitation of Arp 220, however, shows that non-metastable states are widely populated up to a limiting energy of ∼ 1500 K. We assume that this atypical ammonia spectrum is due to the strong FIR field that re-excites the ammonia molecule on timescales much shorter than the already short decay times. The resulting level population causes a break-down of the typical assumptions made for the use of ammonia as a molecular thermometer.

We have carried out ALMA observations toward the environments of G333.0162+00.7615 which was considered as a candidate of high-mass young stellar object (HMYSO) in previous studies. Our dust continuum, molecular line emission and radio recombination line emission observations show that this source is not HMYSO associated with hypercompact (HC) HII regions. Instead, we discovered two new hot cores associate with earliest stages of high mass star formation region. We estimated the rotational temperatures of these cores about 270 K from J=14→13 rotational transition of CH3CN ladder. The moment maps show velocity gradients confirming that this cores are rotating.

We present maps of the “Survey of Water and Ammonia toward the Galactic center” (SWAG). SWAG was observed over three years (∼550 h) with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and covers the entire Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) at about 26” or ∼1 pc resolution. The observed 21.2–25.6 GHz range contains tens of spectral lines and 4 GHz of continuum. Here, we present some final maps. These include multiple NH3 lines, radio recombination lines, shock tracers like HNCO and methanol (CH3OH), high resolution 22 GHz water masers, and a continuum map. The maps are the foundation for ongoing comprehensive temperature mapping of the CMZ, including the identification of heating mechanisms, the characterization of water maser sources as young stellar objects or AGB stars, as well as chemistry, dynamics, and star formation studies of the ISM in this unique environment.

The evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), which are the main sites of star formation, is essential for unraveling how stars form and how galaxies evolve. We analyzed the M33 CO(J = 2–1) data with spatial resolution of 39 pc obtained by ALMA-ACA 7 m array combined with IRAM 30 m. We identified 736 GMCs and classified them into three types; Type I: associated with no Hii regions, Type II: associated with Hii regions with the Hα luminosity L(Hα) < 1037.5 erg s-1, Type III: associated with Hii regions with L(Hα) > 1037.5erg s-1. We found that mass, size, and velocity dispersion of GMCs slightly increase in the order of Type I, II, and III GMCs. Type III GMCs mainly exist in the spiral arm, while many of Type I and Type II GMCs are distributed in the inter-arm. Assuming that the star formation proceeds steadily, we roughly estimated the total GMC lifetime of 30 Myr.

To understand the physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in various scales, we should investigate it with pc-scale resolution over kpc scale coverage. Here, we report the sub-kpc scale Gas Density Histogram (GDH) of the Milky Way. GDH is a histogram of averaged density and corresponds to the probability density distribution (PDF) of gas volume density. We use galactic plain survey data (l =10∘− 50∘) at 12CO and 13CO (J = 1 − 0) obtained as a part of the FOREST Unbiased Galactic plane Imaging survey with the Nobeyama 45m telescope (FUGIN). With this method and data, we are free from spatial structure and molecular cloud identification. GDH can be well fitted with single or double log-normal distribution; which we call as the low-density log-normal (L-LN) and high-density log-normal (H-LN) components. We found both the H-LN fraction (fH) and L-LN width (σL) along the gas density axis show a coherent structure on the longitude-velocity diagram. It suggests that there is a relationship between the ISM property and kpc scale structure in the Milky Way.
