We study the ring of regular functions on the space of planar electrical networks, which we coin the grove algebra. This algebra is an electrical analog of the Plücker ring studied classically in invariant theory. We develop the combinatorics of double groves to study the grove algebra, and find a quadratic Gröbner basis for the grove ideal.

Jean-Louis Loday introduced a class of symmetric operads generated by one bilinear operation subject to one relation making each left-normed product of three elements equal to a linear combination of right-normed products: $({{a}_{1}}{{a}_{2}}){{a}_{3}}\,=\,\sum{{{_{\sigma }}_{\in {{s}_{3}}}}\,}{{x}_{\sigma }}\,{{a}_{\sigma \,(1)}}({{a}_{\sigma (2)\,}}{{a}_{\sigma (3)}})$. Such an operad is called a parametrized one-relation operad. For a particular choice of parameters $\{{{x}_{\sigma }}\}$, this operad is said to be regular if each of its components is the regular representation of the symmetric group; equivalently, the corresponding free algebra on a vector space $V$ is, as a graded vector space, isomorphic to the tensor algebra of $V$. We classify, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, all regular parametrized one-relation operads. In fact, we prove that each such operad is isomorphic to one of the following five operads: the left-nilpotent operad defined by the relation $(({{a}_{1}}{{a}_{2}}){{a}_{3}})\,=\,0$, the associative operad, the Leibniz operad, the dual Leibniz (Zinbiel) operad, and the Poisson operad. Our computational methods combine linear algebra over polynomial rings, representation theory of the symmetric group, and Gröbner bases for determinantal ideals and their radicals.

In this paper, the forward kinematic analysis of 3-degree-of-freedom planar parallel robots with identical limb structures is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on Study's kinematic mapping (E. Study, “von den Bewegungen und Umlegungen,” Math. Ann.39, 441–565 (1891)), resultant method, and the Gröbner basis in seven-dimensional kinematic space. The obtained solution in seven-dimensional kinematic space of the forward kinematic problem is mapped into three-dimensional Euclidean space. An alternative solution of the forward kinematic problem is obtained using resultant method in three-dimensional Euclidean space, and the result is compared with the obtained mapping result from seven-dimensional kinematic space. Both approaches lead to the same maximum number of solutions: 2, 6, 6, 6, 2, 2, 2, 6, 2, and 2 for the forward kinematic problem of planar parallel robots; 3-RPR, 3-RPR, 3-RRR, 3-RRR, 3-RRP, 3-RPP, 3-RPP, 3-PRR, 3-PRR, and 3-PRP, respectively.

We introduce a method named homogeneous PBW deformation that preserves the regularity and some other homological properties for multigraded algebras. The method is used to produce Artin–Schelter regular algebras without the hypothesis on grading.

We characterise the class of finite solvable groups by two-variable identities in a way similar to the characterisation of finite nilpotent groups by Engel identities. Let $u_1=x^{-2}y\min x$, and $u_{n+1} = [xu_nx\min,yu_ny\min]$. The main result states that a finite group G is solvable if and only if for some n the identity $u_n(x,y)\equiv 1$ holds in G. We also develop a new method to study equations in the Suzuki groups. We believe that, in addition to the main result, the method of proof is of independent interest: it involves surprisingly diverse and deep methods from algebraic and arithmetic geometry, topology, group theory, and computer algebra (SINGULAR and MAGMA).

We study bounds for the Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring in terms of the number of variables and the degree of the generators. In particular, our aim is to give a positive answer to a question posed by Bayer and Mumford in What can be computed in algebraic geometry? (Computational algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, Symposia Mathematica, vol. XXXIV (1993), 1–48) by showing that the known upper bound in characteristic zero holds true also in positive characteristic. We first analyse Giusti's proof, which provides the result in characteristic zero, giving some insight into the combinatorial properties needed in that context. For the general case, we provide a new argument which employs the Bayer–Stillman criterion for detecting regularity.
