In field experiments, preemergence applications of bensulide {O,O-bis(1-methylethyl)S-[2-[(phenylsulfonyl)amino] ethyl] phosphorodithioate} or DCPA (dimethyl-2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) at 11.2 kg ai/ha controlled smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb. ex Schweig.)Schreb. ex Muhl. #3 DIGIS] selectively in turf. Granular and liquid formulations of bensulide performed similarly. Napropamide [N,N-diethyl-2-(1-naphthalenyloxy)propanamide] granules when applied alone at 1.1 to 3.4 kg ai/ha were partially effective, but when combined with 5.6 kg ai/ha bensulide, controlled smooth crabgrass for the entire season. Oxadiazon {3-[2,4-dichloro-5-(1-methylethoxy)phenyl]-5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-(3H)-one} controlled crabgrass but temporarily injured the turf. Residual control of crabgrass the year after treatment was unacceptable for all treatments.

Dinitroaniline herbicides are major herbicides used to control annual grass weeds in cool-season turfgrasses. At least three herbicides, benefin, pendimethalin, and trifluralin are labeled preemergence to control weeds in established turfgrass. Prodiamine could be a competitive product. Benefin at 2.2 to 3.4 kg ai/ha, pendimethalin at 1.7 to 3.4 kg ai/ha, prodiamine at 0.6 to 1.7 kg ai/ ha, and benefin plus trifluralin at 1.1 plus 0.6 to 2.3 plus 1.1 kg ai/ha effectively control many annual grass weeds, including large and smooth crabgrass, yellow and green foxtail, barnyardgrass, goosegrass, fall panicum, and annual bluegrass. Most dinitroaniline herbicides provide residual preemergence weed control for the entire growing season. In general, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, red fescue, and other cool-season turfgrasses tolerate most of these herbicides, although higher-than-normal rates of any dinitroaniline herbicide could restrict root growth and cause stand thinning in turfgrass species.

A 2-yr field study was conducted to determine effects of posttreatment irrigation timing on pendimethalin efficacy and dissipation in turfgrass. Factors investigated included herbicide rate, formulation, and the interval between pendimethalin application and the initial posttreatment irrigation. Plots received an initial posttreatment irrigation of 1.25 cm 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 d after treatment. Pendimethalin efficacy on smooth crabgrass was evaluated, and turfgrass foliage and the upper 2.5-cm layer of soil were periodically assayed for pendimethalin residues. Pendimethalin 1.71% granular provided better weed control than pendimethalin 60% wettable powder at all rates, irrigation events, and years. Efficacy of granular pendimethalin was not affected by a delay in posttreatment irrigation, whereas efficacy of pendimethalin in the wettable powder formulation was reduced when irrigation was applied later than the day of treatment. Chromatographic analyses indicated that an average of 54% of the applied pendimethalin (wettable powder formulation) was retained on turfgrass foliage immediately after treatment, compared to 9% for the granular formulation. Soil residue analyses confirmed that a greater proportion of applied pendimethalin reached the soil surface immediately after treatment in the granular formulation than in the wettable power formulation.

Nicosulfuron and rimsulfuron are two selective postemergence sulfonylurea herbicides commercialized, respectively, in Europe and USA for weed control in maize. They are under development in Canada as a 1:1 premix (DPX-79406). The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of these herbicides and their interactions on acetolactate synthase (ALS) activity of selected annual weed species. Each nicosulfuron and rimsulfuron treatment used over a concentration range of 0.01 to 10 μM produced a distinct pattern of ALS inhibition for common ragweed, proso millet, redroot pigweed, smooth crabgrass, and wild oats. Based on ALS specific activity, I50 values for each herbicide differed slightly among the five weed species. However, rimsulfuron was much more inhibitory to ALS than was nicosulfuron. Common ragweed ALS activity increased linearly from 30 to 120 min, even in the continual presence of both herbicides in the assay buffer. This suggests the reversibility of their interaction with ALS. Delaying nicosulfuron (1 μM) or rimsulfuron (0.1 μM) additions to the assay buffer, after initiating the reaction with the enzyme, resulted in a quadratic increase of common ragweed ALS activity. In the continual presence of 0.1 μM of rimsulfuron, addition of 0.1 or 1 μM nicosulfuron did not affect ALS activity any further. However, in the continual presence of 0.1 μM of nicosulfuron, delaying rimsulfuron addition caused an increase in ALS activity. This increase was lower in the presence of 1 μM of nicosulfuron. Inhibition of common ragweed ALS by nicosulfuron and rimsulfuron was not independent of each other, suggesting some competition between the two herbicides for a common binding site on ALS.

The objective of this investigation was to determine if preemergence herbicides, applied at the standard rates and times for smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl. ♯ DIGIS] control, would provide season-long control of goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. ♯ ELEIN] in the transition zone. The transition zone is a unique area of turfgrass culture between cool and warm regions where quality of turfgrasses frequently declines due to environmental stresses. Single and sequential applications of bensulide [O,O-diisopropyl phosphorodithioate S-ester with N-(2-mercaptoethyl)benzenesulfonamide] and DCPA (dimethyltetrachloroterephthalate) did not effectively control goosegrass in any of the three test years. Benefin (N-butyl-N-ethyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-p-toluidine) usually required sequential dosages to provide good (90%) to excellent (95%) goosegrass control. Nearly all rates of oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] used provided good to excellent goosegrass control. Napropamide [2-(α-naphthoxy)-N,N-diethylpropionamide] plus bensulide provided excellent goosegrass control in 1981, but not in 1982. Pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine] also provided effective goosegrass control.

The influence of moisture stress intensity and duration, as well as tank mixtures with pendimethalin, which mitigated the antagonistic effects of drought, on fenoxaprop efficacy were evaluated. In growth chamber tests, specific soil matric potential (Ψm) levels of −0.01 to −1 MPa were imposed and maintained using a polyethylene glycol semipermeable membrane system. Moisture stress was alleviated by irrigation 48 or 96 h after herbicide treatment. Fenoxaprop efficacy was influenced by moisture stress intensity, posttreatment stress duration, and application rate. Under conditions of mild stress (Ψ ≥ −0.2 MPa), both increased application rate and irrigation 48 h after treatment alleviated the effects of drought on fenoxaprop efficacy. Under moderate stress (Ψm = −4.4 MPa), the antagonistic effects of drought were alleviated by a combination of increased rate and irrigation 48 h after treatment However, under more severe stress (Ψm ≤ −0.8 MPa), irrigation coupled with increased rate did not increase crabgrass control above 50%. Where irrigation within 48 h of treatment is not feasible, tank mixes of fenoxaprop with pendimethalin were shown to enhance smooth crabgrass control. Field lysimeter tests indicated that under moisture stress, Ψm of −0.7 MPa, smooth crabgrass shoot dry weight was reduced 65 to 94% with tank-mix combinations of ≥ 0.27 kg ai ha−1 fenoxaprop plus ≥ 2.2 kg ai ha−1 pendimethalin. These rate combinations were shown to be synergistic and able to alleviate the antagonistic effect of moisture stress on fenoxaprop efficacy.

Dithiopyr was applied to ‘Penneagle’ creeping bentgrass seedlings 2, 4, and 8 wk after emergence (WAE) in separate studies in the summers of 1992 and 1993 to determine seedling tolerance. Dithiopyr emulsifiable concentrate (IEC) was applied at 0.14, 0.28, 0.42, and 0.56 kg ai/ha, and granular (G) dithiopyr (0.1G) was applied at 0.14, 0.21, 0.28, and 0.42 kg/ha. Dithiopyr applied 2 WAE caused unacceptable injury regardless of rate or formulation. Injury was characterized by stunting of plants, leaf tip die-back, yellowing of older leaves, and a visible decline in quality. Injury increased with increasing rate. In 1992, the EC and G formulation of dithiopyr caused similar responses, whereas in the summer of 1993, the EC caused greater turf injury. Dithiopyr applied 4 WAE caused less injury than when applied 2 WAE, and injury was acceptable. Dithiopyr applied 8 WAE only slightly injured creeping bentgrass at the high rate for both formulations in both years.

The mode of action of quinclorac was investigated in broadleaf and grass species. Quinclorac induced characteristic auxinlike symptoms in broadleaf species but not in susceptible grasses. In susceptible grasses, quinclorac caused necrotic bands near the zones of elongation in shoots and roots. Electrolyte leakage was induced by quinclorac in smooth crabgrass and other susceptible grasses but not in tolerant grass or susceptible broadleaf species. In smooth crabgrass, increased electrolyte leakage and reduced fresh weight were rate dependent, and initially specific to young tissues. An inhibitory effect on elongation in the youngest leaf of smooth crabgrass and in primary roots of corn was detected 6 and 3 h after quinclorac treatment, respectively. Electrolyte leakage required more than 12 and 6 h in the leaf and root, respectively. Depolarization of corn root cell membrane potential was not observed in a 6-h treatment period. Results presented here provide additional evidence that quinclorac activity differs between susceptible broadleaf and grass species. In addition, the action of quinclorac appears to be similar in both shoot and root tissues of susceptible grasses. It is proposed that quinclorac-induced electrolyte leakage in susceptible grasses is a secondary response and that the primary mechanism of action involves inhibition of an as yet unknown metabolic process associated with cell expansion.

Clods of three sizes (1.5-, 3.3-, and 5.3-cm diameter) and two hardnesses [soft (0.3 MPa) and hard (2.2 MPa)] were made by incorporating seed from one of the five following weed species: corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L. # PAPRH), shepherdspurse [Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medic. # CAPBP], smooth crabgrass Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muehlenb. # DIGIS], common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. # CHEAL), and Canada thistle [Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. # CIRAR], listed by increasing seed size. Under conditions of this experiment, higher germination occurred with larger seed. The higher germination was connected with fewer dormant seed remaining in the clods. Germination significantly decreased (13%) in the larger soft and hard clods with the smaller seed sizes (less germination associated with more dormant seed remaining in the clod). Germination of the two larger seed decreased (23%) only in the larger soft clods but was less significant with both small seed. Non-emerged seedlings increased with larger clods and was most significant with the three large seed in the hard clods and absent with the three large seed in the soft ones. On the average, 70% of the germinated seed emerged. Differences in germination as well as in nonemerged seedlings caused decreased emergence on larger clods. Clod influence in germination and emergence was explained by the volumes of the clod layers involved, and in some comparable aspects corresponded with volumes (depths) of soil layers.

Experiments were conducted in Massachusetts and New York to evaluate the potential influence of plant growth stage, spray volume, nozzle type, additional surfactant, and herbicide formulation on smooth and large crabgrass control in turf with fenoxaprop. At a well-watered site, crabgrass control with fenoxaprop was equal to or greater than with MSMA. On an irrigated, fertilized site, crabgrass growth stage did not influence fenoxaprop efficacy. Excellent control of up to 5-tiller smooth crabgrass was obtained with 0.20 kg/ha of fenoxaprop. On nonirrigated turf, fenoxaprop was less effective on tillered crabgrass than on 2- to 5-leaf weeds. Under very dry conditions, fenoxaprop was ineffective regardless of growth stage. Control with MSMA was less affected by drought than was fenoxaprop. Spray volumes, between 140 and 1120 L/ha, did not affect fenoxaprop efficacy; however, high volume applications (1120 L/ha) with floodjet nozzles were less effective than flat fan nozzle treatments in two of three tests. Added surfactant did not improve efficacy except with floodjet nozzles on a droughty site. No differences were observed between the water-based and the emulsifiable concentrate formulations of fenoxaprop. Fenoxaprop caused temporary phytotoxicity (≤20% reduction in turf quality) to established Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass.

PRE and POST herbicides were evaluated for their effects on root growth of Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue turf. All PRE treatments, bensulide at 14.0 kg ai ha−1, DCPA at 11.8 kg ha−1, dithiopyr at 0.4 kg ha−1, pendimethalin at 1.7 kg ha−1, and prodiamine at 0.6 kg ha−1, inhibited root growth when cores, 10 cm in diam and 2.5 cm deep, of herbicide-treated Kentucky bluegrass were placed into pots of perlite. Only prodiamine inhibited tall fescue rooting. None of the PRE treatments reduced rooting of grasses when 10-cm diam and 16-cm deep cores were sampled from the field. No differences in rooting were observed among any of the POST treatments on either species.

Preemergence applications of herbicides were evaluated for their effect on establishment of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) with competition from either smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl. # DIGIS] or goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. # ELEIN]. When ‘Meyer’ and ‘Belair’ zoysiagrass plugs were grown in sand and treated in the greenhouse, none of the herbicides reduced root weight or length. When plugs were grown in a Sassafrass sandy loam, bensulide {O,O-bis(1-methylethyl)-S-[2-[(phenylsulfonyl)amino] ethyl] phosphorodithioate} and simazine (6-chloro-N,N′-diethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) reduced root weight, and simazine reduced root length of Belair, but not Meyer. In smooth crabgrass-infested field plots, more stolons were produced from Meyer plugs treated with simazine, oxadiazon {3-[2,4-dichloro-5-(1-methylethoxy)phenyl]-5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-(3H)-one}, and siduron [N-(2-methylcyclohexyl)-N′-phenylurea] than plugs treated with bensulide, metribuzin [4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-one], or the untreated control. At the end of two growing seasons, metribuzin-treated plots had significantly less zoysiagrass than other plots. Oxadiazon, DCPA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate), and siduron enhanced the field establishment rate where Meyer zoysiagrass was competing with high populations of smooth crabgrass.

Investigations of smooth crabgrass growth and fenoxaprop-ethyl retention, foliar penetration, translocation, and metabolism were conducted at various soil moisture levels using a polyethylene glycol (PEG) semipermeable membrane system. The activity of fenoxapropethyl was significantly reduced at higher levels of moisture stress and this antagonistic effect was greater with increased duration of water deficit following herbicide application. Fenoxaprop-ethyl spray retention decreased linearly (23% total reduction) as soil matric potential (Ψm) decreased from −0.01 to −0.1 MPa. Foliar penetration and translocation of 14C-fenoxaprop-ethyl applied on the third true leaf were not affected by level or duration of moisture stress. Only 2% of the absorbed radioactivity was translocated out of the treated leaf for each moisture stress level and duration. As the soil Ψm decreased (−0.01 to −1.0 MPa) the relative levels of fenoxaprop-ethyl increased by 76 and 65% after a 48- and 96-h postapplication moisture stress period, respectively. In contrast, fenoxaprop acid decreased by 59 and 44% after 48 and 96 h of moisture stress, respectively. The relative level of fenoxaprop acid was linearly correlated to the antagonistic effect on shoot dry weight. These results suggest that decreased spray retention and, particularly, alterations in fenoxaprop-ethyl metabolism contribute to reduced fenoxaprop-ethyl activity observed in moisture-stressed smooth crabgrass.

Fall application of a PRE herbicide offers professional lawncare applicators additional flexibility in scheduling necessary weed control operations. A 3-yr field study was established on common Kentucky bluegrass in Urbana, IL to examine the effectiveness of fall- or spring-applied prodiamine and DCPA for spring large and smooth crabgrass control. Prodiamine was effective for crabgrass control in turf (≥ 91% control) when applied in spring at ≥ 0.4 kg/ha or when it was applied in the fall at ≥ 0.6 kg/ha (≥ 82% control). In most cases, fall-applied prodiamine at the 0.8 kg/ha rate (≥ 91% control) controlled crabgrass as well as spring-applied DCPA at the 11.8 kg/ha rate (≥ 94% control). Little reduction in turf quality (≥ 8.3) occurred when prodiamine was applied in the fall at 0.8 kg/ha or less. Only when prodiamine was applied at 2.2 kg/ha was there significant quality loss (7.3) with spring applications. In a second experiment to evaluate split fall and spring prodiamine applications for crabgrass control, all split applications had 100% crabgrass control which was not significantly different from single applications of ≥ 1.4 kg/ha.

Seven annual weed species were treated under greenhouse conditions with six rates of either nicosulfuron, rimsulfuron, or a 1:1 mixture (DPX-79406). Herbicide rates in g ai/ha producing 90% dry biomass reduction (GR90) were calculated for each weed species. Accordingly, weeds were classified as very susceptible when GR90 ≤ 9, susceptible when 9 < GR90 ≤ 18, moderately susceptible when 18 < GR90 ≤ 27, and tolerant when, GR90 > 27. Giant and green foxtails were very susceptible to the three herbicides. Proso millet was very susceptible to rimsulfuron and DPX-79406, and susceptible to nicosulfuron. Wild oat was susceptible to nicosulfuron and DPX-79406, and moderately susceptible to rimsulfuron. Redroot pigweed was very susceptible to nicosulfuron; whereas, it was susceptible to rimsulfuron and DPX-79406. Common ragweed and smooth crabgrass were tolerant to the three herbicides. In a second experiment, we used regression estimate analysis with an additive reference model to evaluate nicosulfuron and rimsulfuron interaction on corn, soybean, common ragweed, and smooth crabgrass. We found these herbicides synergistic on smooth crabgrass, antagonistic on soybean, less than additive on common ragweed, and additive on corn.
