The studies about the negative effect of epiphytes on their phorophytes show contradictory results and are based on limited variables (e.g., shoot survival). On branches of Bursera copallifera, we experimented with the transplantation/removal of Tillandsia recurvata and artificial tussocks, measuring shoot survival, growth, generation of new shoots, and production of inflorescences and fruits. Most single traits did not differ between treatments. The generation of new shoots was lower in the treatments where T. recurvata was present and increased in the branches where it was removed. The lowest shoot survival was in the treatments where T. recurvata was present or was removed. Removing T. recurvata increased plant relative fitness, and it was 43% lower in branches with T. recurvata. Tillandsia recurvata is a structural parasite of B. copallifera. A negative effect of epiphytes on their phorophytes appears counterintuitive since it would not be evolutionarily stable for an epiphyte to shorten the lifespan of its support. Tillandsia recurvata populations are concentrated on B. copallifera branches between 2-4 cm in diameter, while smaller branches are mostly empty, so it is possible that the negative effect of T. recurvata occurs in the smallest branches, explaining why T. recurvata populations are biased to larger branches.

Sagamiscintilla thalassemicola (Bivalvia: Galeommatoidea: Galeommatidae) is a rare ectocommensal bivalve that lives on the proboscis of echiuran worms, Anelassorhynchus spp. (Annelida: Thalassematidae: Thalassematinae: Thalassematini), and has been known only from the temperate zones of Japan. In this study, we found S. thalassemicola on the proboscis of the large echiuran Ochetostoma sp. (Thalassematidae: Thalassematinae: Thalassematini) on intertidal flats of three islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago, southern Japan. These are the first records of S. thalassemicola on non-Anelassorhynchus hosts and also from the subtropical regions. Additionally, we also collected S. thalassemicola from an intertidal flat of Kushimoto, Wakayama, Kii Peninsula, Japan, which is an update of the easternmost record of this species. The genetic differences in the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 genes among S. thalassemicola, including those with Ochetostoma sp. from the subtropical region and with Anelassorhynchus spp. from the temperate region, can be considered within the intraspecific variation. These suggest that S. thalassemicola uses different echiuran hosts in the temperate and subtropical regions, respectively.

Sponges, especially Calcarea, are minor components of benthic associations, especially during the Mesozoic. In the Lower Cretaceous of the Neuquén Basin, small calcareous sponges have been found building a small monospecific meadow. It is restricted to a marlstone lens-shaped bed in a quiet outer-ramp setting in the Cerro Marucho Locality (Picún Leufú depocentre), above a shell bed of small exogyrid oysters; oysters and sponges were the only preserved macrobenthic faunal elements. Individual sponges were small, under 4 cm high, and presented a sub-cylindrical morphology with one or more rounded, apical osculi, many inhalant openings and triactine spicules. Specimens studied here were assigned to Endostoma sp. aff. Endostoma nodosa. These sponges are quite commonly encrusted by exogyrid oysters, serpulids, sabellids, agglutinating foraminifers and cyclostome bryozoans. Overgrowths among sclerobionts were common, though no undoubtedly in vivo interaction has been recorded. Disarticulated left oyster valves were frequently bioclaustrated by the sponges, showing that in vivo settlement upon sponges was common. Many oysters settled in the periphery of the osculum suggesting a commensal relationship. The study of this sponge meadow and its sclerobiont community allowed the identification of different stages of ecological succession. The pioneer stage was characterised by sponge settlement on oyster valves, within an otherwise soft consistency bottom. High sedimentation or high nutrient inputs, either individually or in combination, could explain the great abundance of oysters. During the climax stage, sponges thrived and harboured several sclerobiont taxa, developing a relatively dynamic palaeocommunity. Finally, an intensification in either sedimentation rates or nutrient input (or both) past the tolerable threshold for sponges may have been the cause(s) of the meadow's demise. Endostoma and similar forms were up to now reported mostly from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of Europe as accessory builders, or as accompanying fauna in reefal settings. This new record shows that in rare occasions they could form low-relief meadows on their own.

Suckerfish attached to dolphin species have been extensively reported worldwide, yet such association has been rarely seen in the tropical and shallow waters of South America. In Brazil, the Guiana dolphin Sotalia guianensis is distributed along almost the entire extent of the coast and only one case of association with suckerfish has been published. Here we report on a sharksucker Echeneis naucrates associated with a young Guiana dolphin on the north-eastern coast of Brazil. The juvenile dolphin with an attached sharksucker was observed on two occasions separated by a 47-day period; we hypothesize the occurrence of host attachment fidelity. The present report adds information to better discuss the ecological interactions between echeneids and dolphins, and expands the baseline information on cetacean species serving as host to suckerfish.

Human influence on ecological niches can drive rapid changes in the diet, behaviour and evolutionary trajectories of small mammals. Archaeological evidence from the Late Neolithic Loess Plateau of northern China suggests that the expansion of millet cultivation created new selective pressures, attracting small mammals to fields and settlements. Here, the authors present direct evidence for commensal behaviour in desert hares (Lepus capensis), dating to c. 4900 years ago. Stable isotope ratio analysis of hare bones from the Neolithic site at Yangjiesha shows a diachronic increase in a C4 (millet-based) diet, revealing, for the first time, the expansion of ancient human-hare interactions beyond the predator-prey relationship.

Locoweeds are plants of the genera Astragalus and Oxytropis (Fabaceae family) and are toxic to cattle, sheep, and horses. The toxic property of locoweeds is due to the alkaloid swainsonine (SWA), which is synthesized by an endophytic fungus Alternaria spp. section Undifilum. Although the endophyte–locoweed complex is often considered mutualistic, empirical evidence for benefits to host plants is lacking. This study: 1) compared the growth, photosynthesis, and leaf pigment and antioxidant concentrations between endophyte-infected and endophyte-free plants under well-watered and water-deficit conditions; and 2) measured SWA to determine whether SWA concentrations are attenuated by water deficit and leaf age. Locoweed species in this study were woolly loco and silky crazyweed. Endophyte-infected and endophyte-free (by removal of seed coat) seedlings, as confirmed by DNA analyses, were grown under greenhouse conditions for 6 mo, after which plants were subjected to three 12- to 15-d water-deficit periods that created sublethal drought conditions. Results suggest that the endophyte did not influence photosynthetic gas exchange and leaf pigment concentrations. Under well-watered conditions only, endophyte-infected woolly loco plants had lower shoot and root biomass and higher concentrations of α-tocopherol than endophyte-free plants. SWA analyses revealed taxon-specific effects of water deficit, with water deficit increasing SWA concentrations in young leaves of woolly loco but not affecting SWA concentration in silky crazyweed. These results suggest that the endophyte behaves as a parasite in woolly loco plants grown under optimal but not under water-limited conditions. Further, results indicate that drought conditions elevate the toxicity of woolly loco plants. Improved understanding of endophyte-locoweed interactions and factors influencing SWA levels will contribute to the development of livestock management strategies to predict toxicity in particular locoweed populations.

Paramya is an enigmatic genus of Myidae (Bivalvia: Heterodonta: Myoidea) that includes three uncommon species: Paramya subovata (Conrad, 1845), Paramya recluzi (A. Adams, 1864) and Paramya africana Cosel, 1995. Paramya subovata is known as a commensal living in the burrow of the spoon worm Thalassema hartmani Fisher, 1947 (Annelida: Echiura: Thalassematidae), in North American coastal waters. However, the biology of the other two species remains unknown. In this study, we found P. recluzi living in the burrows of the two thalassematid echiuran species, Ikedosoma gogoshimense (Ikeda, 1904) and Arhynchite hayaoi Tanaka & Nishikawa, 2013, in intertidal flats in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Paramya recluzi was embedded in the burrow wall with its short siphons protruding into the host burrow lumen for respiration and filter feeding. To determine the phylogenetic position of P. recluzi, we performed a molecular phylogenetic analysis using the 18S, 28S, COI and H3 genes. Molecular analysis showed that P. recluzi belongs not to the family Myidae, but to the genus Basterotia (Galeommatoidea: Basterotiidae). Morphological examination of P. recluzi revealed that this species has many similarities with Basterotia (e.g. a single cardinal tooth on each valve and short siphons surrounded by tentacles). Thus, we propose that this species should be transferred from the genus Paramya to Basterotia. In addition, we also suggest that the other two species of Paramya (P. subovata and P. africana) should be transferred to the family Basterotiidae based on their shell morphology, anatomy and ecological characteristics.

Frogs are known to occasionally utilize the burrow systems of subterranean rodents, but this phenomenon has previously attracted little attention. We recorded frogs in burrows and in/under the molehills of three African mole-rat species (Bathyergidae, Rodentia) during burrow system mapping in Malawi and Zambia during the dry season. Eight frog species were detected. The most abundant of them, Kassina senegalensis, was found in large numbers in active Ansell's mole-rat nest areas, obviously tolerated by the hosts. We speculate that in areas with prolonged dry seasons mole-rats may increase anuran abundances and diversity.

The behavioural responses of scavenging animals to mackerel (Scomber scombrus) baits were studied by short-term video photography in shallow water (16–18 m depth) at Lough Hyne, Ireland. Earliest arrivals (after seconds/minutes) at baits were small fish or swimming crabs (Liocarcinus depurator), followed by crawling portunid crabs. After tens of minutes, juvenile whelks 2–4 mm shell length (Nassarius reticulatus and/or Nassarius incrassatus) sometimes arrived to feed. They moved at a mean speed of 1.24 (SD 0.392) mm s−1. After tens of minutes or hours, single large scavengers arrived, consuming most of the bait; the most common of these were Cancer pagurus that fed in a wasteful fashion, generating large quantities of mackerel scraps. Cancer pagurus moved into view at a mean speed of 48.7 (SD 16.9) mm s−1(39 times the whelk speed). A single individual of C. pagurus (197 mm carapace width) arrived at a bait carrying 24 juvenile whelks on the dorsal surface of its carapace. No whelks were present on walking legs or chelipeds. The crab fed for 6.8 min and 3 whelks fell off before it departed. The nature of this crab/whelk association is discussed; on balance it appears that it is a previously unreported example of phoresy/phoresis. No whelks were observed being carried by other edible crabs or upon large numbers of scavenging portunid crabs.

In many coastal areas substrate is the limiting resource for benthic organisms. Some sessile species can be used as secondary substrate, reducing competition and increasing coexistence. In southern Chile, annual populations of Macrocystis pyrifera recruit and grow on the shells of Crepipatella fecunda. This study describes ecological interactions between the kelp and the slipper limpet over an annual cycle. The degree of kelp overgrowth was established by collecting sporophytes and through in situ submarine photography over a 10 month period (starting when kelp recruits became visible and ending when sporophytes were no longer present). Changes in the biochemical composition of the limpet tissue were also recorded by chemical analyses, to evaluate the potential effects (positive/neutral/negative) of kelp on C. fecunda nutritional condition. The results indicate that both species coexist, although kelp overgrowth may cause a decrease in carbohydrates in C. fecunda tissues, restricted to the period when the kelp forest reaches its maximum biomass. Individually, the short duration of the maximum overgrowth period and the size reached by C. fecunda females (up to 65 mm shell length) may enable rapid limpet recovery, avoiding competitive exclusion. On a population level, the M. pyrifera annual cycle generates the needed ‘break’ for C. fecunda populations, reducing the effects of kelp overgrowth. Thus, in the view of the neutral effect of kelp overgrowth, together with the positive effect of C. fecunda on M. pyrifera recruitment described somewhere else, this ecological interaction can be categorized as commensalism.

The suctorian ciliates, Thecacineta cothurnioides and Trematosoma rotunda, belonging to the families Thecacinetidae and Acinetidae, were recorded as prominent epibionts on the cuticle of a marine free-living nematode, Chromaspirina sp. (Desmodoridae) from shallow sediments of the continental shelf of the Bay of Bengal. The biometrics of these suctorians arecompared with literature data, and their species-specific association with nematodes is discussed.

During a recent cruise to investigate the cold-water coral habitats in the eastern Gulf of Mexico seven scale worm species (Polychaeta: Aphroditiformia) were found, with four of them new to science: Laetmonice tunicata sp. nov. (Aphroditidae); Eunoe purpurea Treadwell, 1936, Gorgoniapolynoe caeciliae (Fauvel, 1913), Harmothoe dannyi sp. nov., Harmothoe cedrici sp. nov. and Subadyte campechensis sp. nov. (Polynoidae); and Leanira robusta Verrill, 1885 (Sigalionidae). An extended taxonomic account is given for all species, with detailed descriptions and figures for the new species. Three of the five polynoid species were found associated with a coral host: E. purpurea with Bathypathes cf. alternata Brook, 1898 (Antipatharia); G. caeciliae with Acanthogorgia armata Verrill, 1878 and Candidella imbricata (Johnson, 1862) (Octocorallia) and H. dannyi sp. nov. with Stylaster erubescens Pourtalès, 1868 (Hydrozoa). These associations are characterized in detail and documented by in situ ROV pictures and microscopic images and videos of the live animals, together with their respective host.

The objective of this study was to describe associations between several species of seabirds and dusky dolphins. We investigated during what dolphin activities seabirds were most commonly associated, and the size of flock in relation to the number of dolphins in a group. Since both seabirds and dolphins may display different feeding strategies, we also investigated if benefits differed among seabird species. Data were collected in Golfo Nuevo (42°20′S65°00′W) on-board a research vessel between 2001 and 2008. A total of 224 mixed groups of seabirds were encountered during this study. The seabird–dolphin associations were mainly observed during dusky dolphin surface feeding. Shearwaters and kelp gulls were mainly observed in flocks that were associated with dolphins, while Magellanic penguins and cormorants were mainly observed without dolphins. Seabirds may be conditioned to the foraging strategy of dolphins, since birds are associated with dolphins only during dolphin surface feeding. This association probably helped seabirds to find prey, but there were no obvious benefits to dolphins.

Species interactions have been recently depicted as networks, in which each species is connected to one or more other species in binary interaction matrices. Forty networks of epiphytic orchid and host tree species were assessed in Brazilian gallery forests. The nestedness of the networks was estimated with the NODF index and the significance was tested with null models. The phylogenetic structure of the network was also assessed, by searching for phylogenetic signals in the number of interactions and in the similarity of interacting species. In total, 105 orchid species and 132 host tree species were sampled. A nested pattern in all orchid–host tree networks was found. However, phylogenetic signals were not observed. The results support that the host specificity of orchids is small and most of the interactions occur among generalist orchids and generalist host trees. While the concept of species-specificity can thus be rejected, the extreme alternative – that interacting orchids and host trees are not a random subset of the regional species pool – can be dismissed as well. However, factors other than phylogenetic history may structure interaction networks of epiphytic orchids and host trees.

Animals must eat, necessitating their encounter with food. At least one of the two, predator or prey, must move for the two to meet. Many predators forage for prey by one of two strategies, or foraging modes. They forage either actively, in which case their prey may be mobile or sessile, or passively by waiting in ambush, depending on prey motility. These two foraging modes have been studied extensively in lizards as a model organism (Cooper 1995, Huey & Pianka 1981, Pianka 1966, Pietruzska 1986). Many aspects of a species' biology are correlated with its foraging mode. For example, active foragers employ their chemosensory apparatus for following the prey's trail. Sit-and-wait foragers rely on their eyes to identify approaching prey (Cooper 1995). Other differences are briefly referenced elsewhere (Werner et al. 1997, 2004).

On the high Antarctic shelf, 374 different epibiotic relationships of the megafauna were photographically registered and statistically analysed. These comprised 47 different epibiotic and 96 substratum taxa and had obvious differences in abundance and presence in three different benthic assemblages. Six abundant obligatory relationships in which the epibiont occurred almost exclusively on one type of substratum had highly specialized epibionts. For an additional eight relationships, a statistical test revealed that the epibionts preferred specific living and elevated mineral substrata. Most of these relationships are interpreted as commensalism (sensu Odum) in which the suspension feeding epibiont profits from the elevated position. Here it has better access to food compared with life on the sediment. The evolution of a rich and mainly sessile epifauna on parts of the high Antarctic shelves and the successful development of epibiotic behaviour in other species are suggested as a major reason for the high species richness in the benthic fauna. The results provide evidence that the Antarctic megabenthos is more biologically accommodated than physically controlled.

The shell and anatomy of Nipponomysella subtruncata is described. The bivalve is attached singly or in groups of up to nine on Siphonosoma cumanense, a burrowing intertidal sipunculan in south-west Japan. The species is a protandrous hermaphrodite. Specimens 1.4–2.5 mm long are males, which between 2.1 and 3 mm in length reverse sex and remain females. Reproduction peaks in summer and the annual number of clutches is small. Ripe oocytes, 84–88 μm diameter, are spawned into the suprabranchial cavity where they develop into 107-μm-long straight-hinged veligers. Following a planktotrophic period of unknown duration, the c. 360-μm-long spat normally settle upon and attach to the shells of larger, predominantly female, individuals. At a length of 1–1.6 mm they detach again and live separately thereafter. Sperm are transferred in spermatophores and stored within paired, mushroom-shaped receptacles located posteriorly in the female's suprabranchial cavity. The receptacles first appear in large males or in specimens in the process of reversing sex. Stored sperm probably survive long enough to fertilize more than one clutch. The anatomy of Nipponomysella is characteristic of the Montacutidae, and is of especial interest because of the unique structure of the sperm receptacles.

An epidemic of the ergot fungus (Claviceps purpurea (Fr.) Tul), a non-systemic floral pathogen, appeared in populations of Spartina anglica C. E. Hubb in Poole Harbour in the 1980s. Over 70% of inflorescences were infected between 1985 and 1995. Between 1983 and 1995, there was no consistent pattern in the rank order of sites with respect to the proportion of inflorescences infected, and variation in the amount of infection was not related to inflorescence density. Among years, there was significant variation in the total biomass of ergot per inflorescence, but no significant difference in the number of ergots per inflorescence. Log–log regressions of total weight of ergot per inflorescence against the number of ergots per inflorescence showed that in all years resources for each additional ergot were limited.

There was no statistically significant difference between the number of seed set on infected and uninfected inflorescences in 1985 or 1995. Further analysis showed that, compared with uninfected inflorescences, there was higher seed output from inflorescences with fewer than 10% of spikelets infected, which balanced reduced seed output from heavily infected inflorescences. At high levels of ergot infection, a lower proportion of uninfected spikelets set seed, compared with spikelets on uninfected inflorescences. This suggests that conditions which favour ergot growth are detrimental to seed production. Compared with uninfected inflorescences, mean and total seed weights were significantly lower in inflorescences with >10% of spikelets infected.

The fungus Fusarium heterosporum Nees ex Fr. was found in association with the ergots on Spartina. There was a significant positive correlation between the average severity of Fusarium infection and the number of ergots on an inflorescence. There was a non-significant negative correlation between severity of Fusarium and mean ergot weight, when ergot number per inflorescence was held constant. These data suggest that any negative effect of Fusarium on Claviceps is small.

The high, and temporally and spatially uniform levels of ergot infection probably result from genetic uniformity of Spartina and the lack of zonation in the salt marshes of Poole Harbour. This situation is likely to persist for the foreseeable future.
