Mercury is locked in an unusual 3:2 spin-orbit resonance and as such is expected to be in a state of equilibrium called Cassini state. In that state, the angle between the spin axis and orbit normal, called obliquity, remains almost constant while the spin axis remains almost in the plane, also called Cassini plane, defined by the normal to the Laplace plane and the normal to the orbital plane. The spin axis and the orbit normal precess together with a period of about 300 kyr. The orientation of the spin axis of Mercury has been estimated using different approaches: (i) Earth-based radar observations, (ii) Messenger images and altimeter data, and (iii) Messenger radio tracking data. The different estimates all tend to confirm that Mercury occupies the Cassini state. The observed obliquity is small and close to 2 arcmin. It indicates a normalized polar moment of inertia of about 0.34. This information, combined with the existence of a liquid iron core, as evidenced by the librations, allows to constrain the interior structure of Mercury. However, the different estimates of the orientation of the spin axis locate the spin axis somewhat behind or ahead of the Cassini plane, and it is difficult to reconcile and interpret them coherently in terms of detailed interior properties. We review recent models for the obliquity and spin orientation of Mercury, which include the effects of complex orbital dynamics, tidal deformations and associated dissipation, and internal couplings related to the presence of fluid and solid cores. We discuss some implications regarding the interpretations of the orientation estimates in term of interior properties.

Exoplanet detection surveys revealed the existence of numerous multi-planetary systems packed close to their stability limit. In this proceeding, we review the mechanism driving the instability of compact systems, originally published in (Petit et al. 2020). Compact systems dynamics are dominated by the interactions between resonances involving triplets of planets. The complex network of three-planet mean motion resonances drives a slow chaotic semi-major axes diffusion, leading to a fast and destructive scattering phase. This model reproduces quantitatively the instability timescale found numerically. We can observe signpost of this process on exoplanet systems architecture. The critical spacing ensuring stability scales as the planet-to star mass ratio to the power 1/4. It explains why the Hill radius is not an adapted measure of dynamical compactness of exoplanet systems, particularly for terrestrial planets. We also provide some insight on the theoretical tools developped in the original work and how they can be of interest in other problems.

HD34445 is a system that consists of a star and six planets. In some previous work, we investigated the dynamical stability of the system by means of numerical simulations. Here, we explore the system further by carrying out additional numerical experiments. A total of 100000 simulations confirm previous findings of the stability status of the system at the 1σ and 99% c.i. level. We find that only 2.7% of the systems with parameters varied within 1σ from the mean were unstable, while that percentage rose to about 28% for systems with parameter values taken within the 99% c.i. These preliminary results are presented and discussed herein.

In the final phase of terrestrial planet formation, planetary embryos and planetesimals are the building blocks for the growth of rocky planets. In this investigation, we study the dynamical behaviour of a circumstellar disk in an inclined binary star system. The disk consists of 2000 planetesimals and 25 embryos and is distributed between 1 and 4 au around the primary star. To compute the gravitational interaction of the whole system, we use our recently developed GPU N-body code GANBISS. GANBISS treats all collision as perfect merging and delivers the impact parameters that will be used to distinguish between different collision outcomes.

The evolution of the five largest satellites of Uranus during the crossing of the 5/3 mean motion resonance between Ariel and Umbriel is strongly affected by chaotic motion. Studies with numerical integrations of the equations of motion and analysis of Poincaré surface sections provided helpful insights to the role of chaos on the system. However, they lack of a quantification of this chaos in the phase-space. Here, we construct stability maps using the frequency analysis method. We determine that for low energies (small eccentricity and/or inclinations), the phase-space is mainly stable. As the energy increases, the chaotic regions replace the stable motion, until only small, localized libration regions remain stable.

The three-body problem is famously chaotic, with no closed-form analytical solutions. However, hierarchical systems of three or more bodies can be stable over indefinite timescales. A system is considered hierarchical if the bodies can be divided into separate two-body orbits with distinct time and length scales, such that one orbit is only mildly affected by the gravitation of the other bodies. Previous work has mapped the stability of such systems at varying resolutions over a limited range of parameters, and attempts have been made to derive analytic and semi-analytic stability boundary fits to explain the observed phenomena. Certain regimes are understood relatively well. However, there are large regions of the parameter space which remain unmapped, and for which the stability boundary is poorly understood. We present a comprehensive numerical study of the stability boundary of hierarchical triples over a range of initial parameters. Specifically, we consider the mass ratio of the inner binary to the outer third body ( $q_\mathrm{out}$ ), mutual inclination (i), initial mean anomaly and eccentricity of both the inner and outer binaries ( $e_\mathrm{in}$ and $e_\mathrm{out}$ respectively). We fit the dependence of the stability boundary on $q_\mathrm{ out}$ as a threshold on the ratio of the inner binary’s semi-major axis to the outer binary’s pericentre separation $a_\mathrm{in}/R_\mathrm{p, out} \leq 10^{-0.6 + 0.04q_\mathrm{out}}q_\mathrm{out}^{0.32+0.1q_\mathrm{out}}$ for coplanar prograde systems. We develop an additional factor to account for mutual inclination. The resulting fit predicts the stability of $10^4$ orbits randomly initialised close to the stability boundary with $87.7\%$ accuracy.

We investigated the influence of the variability of the masses of planets and the parent star on the dynamic evolution of n planetary systems, considering that the masses of bodies change isotropically with different rates. The methods of canonical perturbation theory, which developed on the basis of aperiodic motion over a quasi-conical cross section and methods of computer algebra were used. 4n evolutionary equations were obtained in analogues of Poincare elements. As an example, the evolutionary equations of the three-planet exosystem K2 − 3 were obtained explicitly, which is a system of 12 linear non-autonomous differential equations. Further, the evolutionary equations will be investigated numerically.

We address the question of identifying the long-term (secular) stability regions in the semi-major axis-eccentricity projected phase space of the Sun-Jupiter planar circular restricted three-body problem in the domains i) below the curve of apsis equal to the planet’s orbital radius (ensuring protection from collisions) and ii) above that curve. This last domain contains several Jupiter’s crossing trajectories. We discuss the structure of the numerical stability map in the (a,e) plane in relation to manifold dynamics. We also present a closed-form perturbation theory for particles with non-crossing highly eccentric trajectories exterior to the planet’s trajectory. Starting with a multipole expansion of the barycentric Hamiltonian, our method carries out a sequence of normalizations by Lie series in closed-form and without relegation. We discuss the applicability of the method as a criterion for estimating the boundary of the domain of regular motion.

We present an updated public version of EPM (Ephemerides of Planets and the Moon). Since the last public version, EPM2017, many improvements were made in both the observational database and the mathematical model. Latest lunar laser ranging observations have been added, as well as radio ranges of Juno spacecraft and more recent ranges of Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. EPM2021 uses a new improved way to calculate radio signal delays in solar plasma and has a major update in the method of determination of asteroid masses. Also, a delay-capable multistep numerical integrator was implemented for EPM in order to properly account for tide delay in the equations of the motion of the Moon. The improved processing accuracy has allowed to refine existing estimates of the mass of the Sun and its change rate, parameters of the Earth–Moon system, masses of the Main asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt; and also to raise important questions about existing numerical models of solar wind.

We revisit the problem of the secular dynamics in two-planet systems in which the planetary orbits exhibit a high value of the mutual inclination. We propose a ‘basic hamiltonian model’ for secular dynamics, parameterized in terms of the system’s Angular Momentum Deficit (AMD). The secular Hamiltonian can be obtained in closed form, using multipole expansions in powers of the distance ratio between the planets, or in the usual Laplace-Lagrange form. The main features of the phase space (number and stability of periodic orbits, bifurcations from the main apsidal corotation resonances, Kozai resonance etc.) can all be recovered by choosing the corresponding terms in the ‘basic Hamiltonian’. Applications include the semi-analytical determination of the actual orbital state of the system using Hamiltonian normalization techniques. An example is discussed referring to the system of two outermost planets of the ν-Andromedae system.

The averaged four-planetary motion theory is constructed up to the third order in planetary masses. The equations of motion in averaged elements are numerically integrated for the Solar system’s giant planets for different initial conditions. The comparison of obtained results with the direct numerical integration of Newtonian equations of motion shows an excellent agreement with them. It suggests that this motion theory is constructed correctly. So, we can use this theory to investigate the dynamical evolution of various extrasolar planetary systems with moderate orbital eccentricities and inclinations.

Circumstellar discs are known to exist in great variety, from gas-rich discs around the youngest stars to evolved debris discs such as the solar system’s zodiacal cloud. Through gravitational interaction, exoplanets embedded in these discs can generate density variations, imposing potentially observable structural features on the disc such as rings or gaps. Here we report on a mirrored double crescent pattern arising in simulations of discs harbouring a small, moderately eccentric planet - such as Mars. We show that the structure is a result of a directed apsidal precession occurring in particles that migrate the planet’s orbital region under Poynting-Robertson drag. We further analyze the strength of this effect with respect to planet and particle parameters.

We consider four- and five-body problems with symmetrical masses (Caledonian problems). Families of periodic orbits originate from the collinear Schubart orbits. We present and discuss some of these periodic orbits.

In the spin-orbit resonances, we assume that the orbit of the secondary asteroid around the primary is invariant, which is a reasonable assumption at first glance. Owing to the irregularity of asteroids’ geometry and their effect on the mutual orbit, this assumption should be revised. Therefore, we focus on a binary asteroid with a spherical primary and a secondary with an irregular shape. When the shape of a secondary asteroid is not a sphere, the gravitational interaction is important, and we should consider the interaction of orbit and spin. We generate fast Lyapunov indicator (FLI) maps for both spin-orbit resonance and spin-orbit coupling problems and investigate the effect of orbit alternation on the structure of phase space.

Close encounters or resonances overlaps can create chaotic motion in small bodies in the Solar System. Approaches that measure the separation rate of trajectories that start infinitesimally near, or changes in the frequency power spectrum of time series, among others, can discover chaotic motion. In this paper, we introduce the ACF index (ACFI), which is based on the auto-correlation function of time series. Auto-correlation coefficients measure the correlation of a time-series with a lagged duplicate of itself. By counting the number of auto-correlation coefficients that are larger than 5% after a certain amount of time has passed, we can assess how the time series auto-correlates with each other. This allows for the detection of chaotic time-series characterized by low ACFI values.

We revisit the problem of the existence of KAM tori in extrasolar planetary systems. Specifically, we consider the υ Andromedæ system, by modelling it with a three-body problem. This preliminary study allows us to introduce a natural way to evaluate the robustness of the planetary orbits, which can be very easily implemented in numerical explorations. We apply our criterion to the problem of the choice of a suitable orbital configuration which exhibits strong stability properties and is compatible with the observational data that are available for the υ Andromedæ system itself.

The Laplace resonance is a configuration that involves the commensurability between the mean motions of three small bodies revolving around a massive central one. This resonance was first observed in the case of the three inner Galilean satellites, Io, Europa, and Ganymede. In this work the Laplace resonance is generalised by considering a system of three satellites orbiting a planet that are involved in mean motion resonances. These Laplace-like resonances are classified in three categories: first-order (2:1&2:1, 3:2&3:2, 2:1&3:2), second-order (3:1&3:1) and mixed-order resonances (2:1&3:1). In order to study the dynamics of the system we implement a model that includes the gravitational interaction with the central body, the mutual gravitational interactions of the satellites, the effects due to the oblateness of the central body and the secular interaction of a fourth satellite and a distant star. Along with these contributions we include the tidal interaction between the central body and the innermost satellite. We study the survival of the Laplace-like resonances and the evolution of the orbital elements of the satellites under the tidal effects. Moreover, we study the possibility of capture into resonance of the fourth satellite.
