Lepidopteran stemborers, mainly the African stemborer Busseola fusca Fuller and spotted stemborer Chilopartellus Swinhoe, are among the economically important pests of sorghum in Kenya. Identification of sources of resistance is valuable for the development of an integrated pest management strategy to minimize losses. This study evaluated 27 genotypes with artificial infestations (mostly for tolerance) in two different agroecological zones. Data on damage from leaf feeding, dead heart, exit holes, and stem tunnelling; plant height; days to 50% flowering; total grain yield; and hundred-grain mass were collected. Significant differences (P< 0.001) were observed in all the traits evaluated, except leaf damage, under infestation by C. partellus. Classification into different categories of resistance revealed genetic variation. Genotypes resistant/moderately resistant to both pests were as follows: ICSA 464>ICSB 464>ICSB 467>ICSA 472>ICSB 472>ICSA 473>ICSA 474>IESV 91131 DL>Macia. The relative contributions of the damage parameters to grain yield loss were partitioned into direct and indirect relationships by path coefficient analysis with grain yield as the resultant variable. The results revealed that damage from exit holes, dead heart, leaf feeding and stem tunnelling had a negative indirect effect on grain yield. The identified genotypes can be used to enhance resistance to both pests in susceptible cultivars that farmers prefer.

The efficacy of different aqueous dilutions of crude seed extract of Millettia ferruginea (Hochst.) Baker (1, 3, 5 and 10%) was evaluated under field conditions in terms of the level of damage and yield loss of maize caused by the maize stemborer Busseola fusca (Fuller) in Hawassa, southern Ethiopia. The insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin 5EC, applied at a rate of 16 g active ingredient/hectare, was used as the reference product. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The maize variety A511 was planted in individual plots of 60 m2. Data on stand count, leaf infestation, bored stem and dead heart were collected weekly. Plots sprayed with the 5% concentration of Millettia showed low levels of damage (9–11% leaf infestation, 0.4% dead heart, 14–17% bored stem and < 0.2% bored ear), compared with plots sprayed with lambda-cyhalothrin. The treatments with 1 and 3% concentrations of Millettia were inferior to those with lambda-cyhalothrin and 5 and 10% concentrations of Millettia. In contrast, the treatment with the 10% concentration of Millettia led to the death of plants, thereby lowering the yield. About 80% of the total length of individual maize stalks from the untreated plots was internally tunnelled by the feeding larvae, while the internal stem tunnelling was low ( < 7%) in plants treated with Millettia at concentrations of 3, 5 and 10%. Among the treatments with Millettia, higher yields (37–48 decitonnes/hectare) were obtained from maize plots treated with 5% concentration. The use of the aqueous crude seed extract of M. ferruginea at a concentration of 5% applied two to three times is recommended for the control of B. fusca in maize.

Recent unusual high damage of finger millet Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. and wheat Triticum spp. by Busseola fusca (Fuller) in Ethiopia prompted the initiation of this study that has involved comparing the host status of these crops with the main host, maize Zea mays. One improved variety and one local land race each of wheat, finger millet and maize were grown with and without fertilizer in a randomized complete block design to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizers and varietal differences on the suitability of these host plants for the development of borer larvae. The results indicated that B. fusca larvae managed to survive up to the adult stage in the stems of finger millet and maize, while wheat failed to support larval development to pupation. The stems of fertilizer-treated crops hosted more larvae than those of untreated ones and these were significantly longer and heavier. Improved varieties tended to be more suitable for B. fusca development. Furthermore, irrespective of the crop species, improved varieties grown with fertilizer were more suitable for the development of B. fusca. An improved finger millet variety, KNE No. 1098, grown with fertilizer was as suitable as the improved maize variety A-511, grown without fertilizer. For wheat, however, immature mortality was 100% irrespective of variety and fertilizer level.

In order to predict host accessibility by the pupal parasitoid Xanthopimpla stemmator (Thunberg), four grass species (Sorghum bicolor, Pennisetum purpureum, Sorghum arundinaceum and Zea mays) were sampled for stemborer pupae in Kwale, in the low altitudes of southern Kenya, and in Trans-Nzoia, in the high altitudes of western Kenya. The pupal position of Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand), Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), Sesamia calamistis Hampson, Sesamia sp. nr oriaula (Tams and Bowden) and Busseola fusca (Fuller) in the plant were determined in relation to (a) the distance of pupae from the edge of the stem (depth), (b) the distance between the moth-exit hole and the head of the pupa (location) and (c) the length of the tunnel from the moth-exit hole to the base of the tunnel. Pupal depth and location for C. partellus and B. fusca varied significantly in the different plant species tested, and the pupae tended to be embedded deeper in cultivated than wild hosts. On all host species, the borers were located at a depth less than 0.35 cm. Most C. orichalcociliellus and S. calamistis pupae were found pupating in the ears of maize or the upper part of the wild hosts' stem. Sesamia sp. nr oriaula was only collected from the lower parts of P. purpureum. For B. fusca, tunnel length varied significantly among plant species and was longer in cultivated hosts. Xanthopimpla stemmator has an ovipositor length of about 0.52 cm, thus it is anticipated that the parasitoid could easily reach and parasitize the pupae in these host species.

The population dynamics of busseola fusca (Fuller) was studied from 1997 to 1999 at Halhale and Halhal Begos, located at altitudes of 1960 and 1850 m above sea level respectively in the highlands of Eritrea. Sowing was done in early April in Halhale and late June in Halhal Begos throughout the study period. All agronomic practices recommended for sorghum production in the two areas were followed to ensure good crop stand, except for application of pesticides. A total of 15 generations, nine in Halhale and six in Halhal Begos were observed during the study periods. Busseola fusca had three and two generations per year in Halhale and Halhal Begos, respectively. Peak egg laying at Halhale was in early May, July and early September, while at Halhal Begos it was in July and early September. The study revealed that stage-specific mortalities of B. fusca were caused by infertility, disappearance (predation by ants and earwigs, lack of suitable host, abiotic factors), residuals and parasitoids. The key mortality factor was disappearance of small larvae (35–66 % mortality). The mortality of the other stages was low but had a composite effect on the overall generation mortality. The mortality of small larvae was density-dependent and density-independent at Halhale and Halhal Begos, respectively. The changes in population between generations were due to small larval mortality of B. fusca from one generation to the next. The life table study showed that mortality due to natural factors did not reduce B. fusca population below the damage level. Integrated management strategies are discussed to reduce the damage caused by B. fusca on sorghum.

The effect of infestation of lepidopteran borers on yield of maize was assessed at three locations in the forest and forest/savanna transition zones of Cameroon, during the first and second season of 1992. Maize was treated once or twice with the systemic carbofuran at different developmental stages. The species encountered were the stem-boring noctuids Busseola fusca and Sesamia calamistis, which oviposit on and attack pre-tasseling stages of maize; the stem-boring pyralid Eldana saccharina, which attacks plants at and after tasseling; and two ear borers, namely the pyralid Mussidia nigrivenella and the tortricid Cryptophlebia leucotreta. Generally, carbofuran reduced infestations by B. fusca and S. calamistis but had little or no effect on species attacking the plant's later stages. Thus early treatments with granules into the whorl were more efficient than late treatments as a side dressing, and a second late treatment had little effect. During the first season, late-attacking species were predominant and grain yield losses of 17–44 % were found in one location only. During the second season, species attacking young plants (mainly B. fusca) became predominant in all three locations and yield losses of 30 to 41 % were found in two of the three locations. The percentage of ears with damage was especially high during the second season. As green maize is an important source of cash income in the area and damaged ears cannot be sold, the economic loss was likely considerable.

Busseola fusca Fuller is one of the major lepidopteran stemborers of maize and sorghum in Africa. Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an indigenous, gregarious larval endoparasitoid that attacks mid- to late-instar stemborer larvae, which is reported to be one of the most important larval parasitoids of B. fusca in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Previous work has shown that two biotypes of C. sesamiae occur in Kenya which express differential abilities to develop in B. fusca. A biotype from western Kenya successfully develops in B. fusca, while a biotype from the eastern coastal area does not. We treated fourth-instars of B. fusca with calyx fluid from C. sesamiae from western Kenya (Kitale) before offering them to C. sesamiae from the Coast (Mombasa) for oviposition, and found that the eggs were not encapsulated. This suggests that factors in the calyx fluid of C. sesamiae from the western Kenya biotype were responsible for suppressing the immune system of B. fusca. We speculate that polydnaviruses in the calyx fluid were involved in disarming the host immune system, and that the polydnaviruses in the two biotypes are genetically different.

Three hundred and ninety-two maize fields in the southern arable zone of Kenya were sampled for lepidopteran cereal stemborers from 1996–2000. Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) was the most abundant stemborer, and was found at all locations with elevations below 1500 m, and at some locations between 1500 and 2300 m. The highest density of C. partellus was in the semi-arid ecological zone of eastern Kenya. Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand) was found in the lowland southern coastal area, and a few inland sites on the border of Tanzania in southeastern Kenya. Busseola fusca Fuller was dominant in highland areas. In the Lake Victoria Basin, which has an elevation of about 1100 m, B. fusca was dominant at some sites, but overall, C. partellus was more abundant. Sesamia calamistis Hampson was present at all elevations and all locations, but typically at low densities. Eldana saccharina (Walker) was found in two-thirds of the fields sampled in the Lake Victoria Basin. These results are compared with the distributions of the various stemborers in the 1950s to 1960s, as reported in the literature.

Surveys of the cereal stemborers and their natural enemies in Zambia were initiated in 1997. The surveys verified the presence of three stemborer species on maize, sorghum and pearl millet. These were the maize stalk borer, Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), the spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and the African pink borer, Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Occasionally, the sugarcane borer, Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was also recovered especially around areas near the sugarcane plantation at Mazabuka, Southern province. Chilo partellus was the predominant stemborer in region I (areas with less than 600 mm of rainfall per annum). Three ‘hot spot’ areas, namely Luangwa, Buleya Malima and Kalobolelwa, were identified based on the abundance of Ch. partellus. The exotic parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was released in the three areas for the control of Ch. partellus. However, post-release surveys in these areas have not revealed any recoveries of Co. flavipes. Three indigenous natural enemies, namely Cotesia sp., Dentichasmias sp. and Dolichogenidea sp. emerged from the field-collected larvae.

A review is provided of the status of integrated management technologies for the stemborers Busseola fusca and Chilo partellus in Lesotho. Busseola fusca is the most important stemborer of maize and sorghum while C. partellus is only important on sorghum. No stemborer-resistant maize or sorghum varieties are available and farmers mainly plant land races of these crops. Cultural control practices such as the use of crop residue management practices have potential in suppressing borer numbers. Chilo partellus numbers, especially, can be suppressed through the destruction of sorghum crop residues. Studies indicated that adaptation of planting date can lead to escape of damage and reduced yield losses. Surveys indicate that insecticide use is on the increase in Lesotho, but the efficacy of insecticides used for borer control is not always adequate. The most promising area for change towards a pest management system lies in crop residue management. Changing crop residue management practices, especially where sorghum residues are left in the fields, should be encouraged. There is a high likelihood of adoption of a system in which Napier grass is planted around maize fields since farmers place a premium on livestock feed. Development and adoption of an integrated pest management system will, however, only be successful if farmers are involved in its development.

Surveys were conducted to determine the species composition of stemborers and their natural enemies in maize and sorghum in 1999 and 2000 in eastern, northern, southern and western Ethiopia. The six species of stemborers found attacking maize and sorghum were Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), S. nonagrioides botanephaga Tarns & Bowden (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Rhynchaenus niger (Horn) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae) and Pissodes dubious (Ström) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae). Twenty species of primary parasitoids of eggs, larvae and pupae of Ch. partellus, B. fusca and S. calamistis were recorded. Other natural enemies, including predators, fungi and nematodes, were also found. Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was the dominant and the most widely distributed parasitoid of stemborers in Ethiopia, and was reared from field-collected Ch. partellus, B. fusca and S. calamistis.

Using examples from surveys to collect natural enemies of the indigenous African sugarcane borer Eldana saccharina Walker throughout Africa, insight is given into what factors should be investigated should biological control of other indigenous African stemborers be considered. Indigenous host plant range, parts of indigenous and crop hosts attacked, types of natural enemies found in these different niches and natural enemy attack strategies are all important factors to consider when planning redistribution of indigenous natural enemies from one part of Africa to another. This knowledge is important when choosing the correct natural enemy for mass rearing and release into the affected crop, and can be used to manage the crop habitat, using the indigenous tritrophic systems identified, to increase crop diversity and thus effectiveness of indigenous natural enemies.

The stemborers Busseola fusca (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Chilo partellus (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) are important pests of maize and sorghum in South Africa. A habitat management system for these pests is being developed in the Northern Province of South Africa. This management system is similar to the one used in eastern Africa, where host and non-host plants of stemborers are used to repel moths away from the main crop and attract them to highly attractive trap plants. To identify possible trap crops, a survey of wild host plants of stemborers was undertaken in the Northern Province of South Africa and several new host plants were recorded. As a possible trap crop for stemborers, various Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) varieties were evaluated for oviposition preference by Ch. partellus moths and subsequent larval survival on those varieties. Few larvae survived longer than 15 days after inoculation onto Napier grass plants. A survey was conducted of farming practices that would affect the adoption of habitat management strategies. The high usage of tractors for ploughing may have a negative effect on adoption of perennial intercrops in a habitat management system. The common practice of free grazing animals also reduced the fodder value and benefit of trap crops. The value of Napier grass does not only lie in its use as trap crop but also as a measure to limit soil erosion and as animal feed.

Studies on the population dynamics and species composition of the sorghum stemborers Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Sesamia sp. were conducted at Melkassa, Rift Valley of Ethiopia, during the 1990 and 1992 cropping seasons. Chilo partellus at 92% dominated the species composition. Busseola frisca made up 7.7% and Sesamia calamistis less than 1% of the borers. Occurrence of partellus declined with delay in planting until the third planting ( early June to early July) then increased during late planting in July. Busseola fusca alone, however, tended to increase in numbers with delay in planting. In Melkassa area, early planting in July could be considered as the most suitable, with low borer numbers, damage symptoms and resulting in fewer stalks with peduncle damage. Grain yield was also higher during early planting in July while the lowest yield was obtained during late planting in July. Weather factors showed no consistency but relative humidity seemed to have a significantly negative correlation with insect numbers in the last two plantings in 1992.

Three field trials were conducted to determine the effect of various levels of resistance of South African sorghum hybrids on follow-up generations of Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). In one trial, plants were artificially infested with B. fusca larvae while the other trials were subjected to natural infestation of C. partellus. The number of damaged internodes and moth exit holes per stem were used to calculate a relative survival index which estimates the survival of larvae to the adult stage. A moth production index was calculated to estimate the role of a hybrid in area-wide suppression of stemborer populations. In the B. fusca trial, resistant and susceptible experimental hybrids produced 40 000 and 113 000 moths per hectare respectively, compared to 80 000 and 83 000 moths per hectare produced by the commercial hybrids. Larval damage to whorl leaves, assessed on a 1 to 9 scale, indicated leaf-feeding resistance of commercial hybrids to B. fusca ranging from susceptible to intermediate. Yield losses suffered by the hybrids in the B. fusca trial were greater than that suffered by a susceptible experimental hybrid, indicating susceptibility of South African hybrids to B. fusca. The evaluation of sorghum varieties for their potential to reduce stemborer populations should indicate their usefulness in integrated pest management systems.

Studies were conducted from 1993–1995 at Samanko, Mali, on rearing and pheromone trapping of Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and on the insecticidal effect of extracts of Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae) on B. fusca and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). A technique for mass rearingof B.fusca larvae on a chickpea and sorghum leaf-based meridic diet was developed, requiring about 10 g of diet per larva. An average of 7.3 successive generations were obtained per year. Pupal and larval mortalities were less than 15%. Oviposition was obtained on artificial substrates, with a fecundity of 300–500 eggs per female. Laboratory tests were conducted with diets in which extracts of nuts of J. curcas had been added. A 100% larvicidal effect was obtained with B. fusca and S. calamistis at 0.01% and 1% crude oil concentration respectively, and with 0.025% of the phorbol ester fraction on S. cahmistis. Trapping experiments using traps made of aluminum trays baited with synthetic pheromone showed that B. fusca male moths flights could be satisfactorily monitored. An improvement of traps and/or pheromone effectiveness is, however, necessary before their use as a control method.

The stemborers Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), are the most important pests of maize and grain sorghum in South Africa. Parasitoids, pathogens and predators curtailed populations of B. fusca and C. partellus on the crops but their activity was not enough to reduce pest populations to below-economic-damage levels. They also could not prevent the dispersal and subsequent widespread distribution of C. partellus after its introduction into South Africa. Nine parasitoids and hyperparasitoids have been recorded attacking both borer species. These parasitoids are probably more habitat-specific with regard to foraging for hosts than they are host-specific, as they appear to have moved from their indigenous hosts to use C. partellus as a new alternative host. Between 1977 and 1993 three braconids, one eulophid, three ichneumonids, two trichogrammatids and four tachinids were introduced into South Africa from 11 countries for biological control of stemborers. Recoveries of parasitoids were made only short periods after releases and in the vicinity of the release sites. Cold and dry winters, with night temperatures often falling to below freezing, prevail in the Highveld Region which is the major summer-grain-producing area of South Africa. These conditions, and the fact that borers enter diapause in the dry stalks for 7 months in winter, when the crops or other alternative host plants such as grasses do not grow, hamper the establishment of exotic natural enemies in the Highveld Region.

Larval growth of the two main maize stemborers, Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) and Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae), in Côte d'Ivoire was studied as a function of temperature sums. Tunnelling by unit weight was similar for both species. Early attacks by B. fusca (infestation until 17 days after maize emergence) resulted in deadhearts or in growth reduction. A relation combining the date of infestation, the level of attack and the development stage of maize explains the observed damage. Later attacks by both borers result in differences in damage, which are related to the larval distribution in the stem, the compensation between maize yield components, and also to the presence of a more or less active larva in the cavity.

Field studies on oviposition site, preference and pattern of Busseola fusca on various stages of maize were conducted at Awassa (southern Ethiopia). The positions of egg masses in terms of leaf sheath and height from the ground were described for different ages of the maize plant. Irrespective of the age of maize plants, eggs were laid on the under side of leaf sheaths. Busseola fusca moths showed ovipositional preference to younger maize plants. Significantly fewer egg masses were laid on older plants (r=.0.98, P <0.001). A strong relationship between maize plant age and position of egg masses was found. During the post-tasselling stage the great majority of the egg masses were found below the primary ear.

Surveys were conducted in farmers' fields in Zambia during the 1987/88, 1988/89 and 1989/90 cropping seasons, to evaluate the extent of attack on maize by stalk borers and their distribution in some selected maize growing areas in three agroecological regions. Infestation levels varied from season to season. Infestations were low (0.5–13%) in the Southern province: Gwembe Valley and Livingstone in region I and Choma and Kalomo in region II. Infestation levels in other areas ranged from 21–75%. Three species of stalk borers, Busseola fusca, Chilo partellus and Sesamia calamistis were recorded. Their composition and proportion in the complex differed from place to place. C. partellus occurred at an altitude range of 350–1170m, B. fusca occurred at 1032 to >1300m above sea level. B. fusca was the most widely distributed and predominant.
