In this paper we study the balayage of semi-Dirichlet forms. We present new results on balayaged functions and balayaged measures of semi-Dirichlet forms. Some of the results are new even in the Dirichlet forms setting.

Blackwell (1951), in his seminal work on comparison of experiments, ordered two experiments using a dilation ordering: one experiment, Y, is ‘more spread out’ in the sense of dilation than another one, X, if E(c(Y))≥E(c(X)) for all convex functions c. He showed that this ordering is equivalent to two other orderings, namely (i) a total time on test ordering and (ii) a martingale relationship E(Yʹ | Xʹ)=Xʹ, where (Xʹ,Yʹ) has a joint distribution with the same marginals as X and Y. These comparisons are generalized to balayage orderings that are defined in terms of generalized convex functions. These balayage orderings are equivalent to (i) iterated total integral of survival orderings and (ii) martingale-type orderings which we refer to as k-mart orderings. These comparisons can arise naturally in model fitting and data confidentiality contexts.

Afin d'étudier la structure fine de la turbulence pariétale en présence de variations importantes de densité, une analyse statistique des données expérimentales, dans une soufflerie à recirculation, est effectuée. Les résultats montrent que la relaxation du facteur de dissymétrie de $u'(S_{u'}$) s'effectue plus rapidement dans la couche externe que près de la paroi, aussi bien pour l'injection de l'air que pour l'injection d'hélium. $S_{u'}$ croît près de la fente d'injection de façon appréciable et cette augmentation est nettement plus accentuée pour l'injection de l'air que l'injection d'hélium. Cette croissance du facteur de dissymétrie près de la fente d'injection peut s'expliquer par l'augmentation du flux convectif longitudinal de l'énergie turbulente dans cette zone. Les résultats montrent, pour la distribution du facteur d'aplatissement $F_{u'}$, qu'il n'y a pas d'effet important du gradient de densité sur la structure intermittente de la vitesse longitudinale instantanée dans la zone développée, $x/\delta \ge 5$. L'analyse statistique menée dans cette étude montre que l'injection d'hélium, dans la couche limite, engendre des éjections plus violentes que dans le cas d'une injection d'air. Ce résultat est confirmé par la contribution importante des éjections au flux massique turbulent.

After preliminaries on Markov chains, supermartingales and potential theory (Section 1), the energy of a potential supermartingale generated by an increasing process is defined. The paper examines some properties of the energy of potentials of the form Ut = p(Xt) where p is a purely excessive function (which is also a potential of a charge) for a Markov chain (Xt). Also, the mutual energy of two potentials associated with the same Markov chain is discussed. Finally, several applications and examples are worked out in detail (Section 3).

We discuss the potential theory of optimal stopping for a standard process and an unbounded reward function. This is applied to Brownian motion constrained to a N(m, σ2) distribution at time 1. Boyce [2] has discovered, via computer, various interesting features of this example. We provide direct proofs for some of them, in particular for the qualitative jump of the optimal strategy as the variance σ2 passes the critical value 1.
