An oat (Avena sativa L. ‘Dal’) primary root bioassay procedure was used to study the persistence of eight dinitroaniline herbicides in soil. Sensitivity of the bioassay to the herbicides depended on the length of time roots were exposed to the herbicide treatments. Root inhibition increased with time of exposure. Herbicide persistence was studied under growth chamber, greenhouse, and field conditions. The herbicides remained biologically active the longest under dry and cool soil conditions. At 5 C, little change in herbicide activity was observed over an 8-month period. Under greenhouse conditions, the herbicides in wet soil dissipated rapidly, as compared with those in dry soil. Soil samples taken from depths of 0 to 7.5 cm and from 7.5 to 15 cm in the field showed that the herbicides were retained primarily in the surface 7.5 cm. Small amounts were found from 7.5 to 15 cm only shortly after the herbicides were applied. Dinitramine (N4,N4-diethyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-3,5-dinitrotoluene-2,4-diamine) was the only herbicide tested of which soil residues from spring field applications were not detected the following fall.

Effects of soil water and herbicide vapors on the phytotoxicity of eight dinitroaniline herbicides to oats (Avena sativa L. ‘Dal’) were studied. Oat primary root length was inhibited more by the herbicides than was shoot length or shoot fresh weight. All of the herbicides, except oryzalin (3,5-dinitro-N4,N4-dipropylsulfanilamide), inhibited primary root length through vapor activity. Vapors of dinitramine (N4,N4-diethyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-3,5-dinitrotoluene-2,4-diamine) were most inhibitory. Herbicide vapor inhibition increased with temperature. Soil water affected oryzalin activity more than it did that of the other herbicides. Oryzalin phytotoxicity to the oat primary root was reduced more at the low soil water than was that of the other herbicides. Its low vapor activity apparently reduced its effectiveness in dry soil. Difference in magnitude of herbicide phytotoxicity between two soil moisture levels generally was more pronounced at lower herbicide concentration.

Eurasian watermilfoil, an aquatic flowering plant, was found to be a suitable bioassay plant for the detection of photosynthetic inhibitor herbicides in water and aqueous extracts of soil. Stock cultures of Eurasian watermilfoil were maintained in an algal-free medium under constant environmental conditions. Oxygen evolution from three lateral shoots 3 to 5 cm in length was measured before and after herbicide treatment. Inhibition of photosynthesis was detected within 10 min of treatment. Concentrations as low as 5.9 × 10–8M terbacil and 6.4 × 10–8M diuron were detected in water. Simazine, atrazine, and metribuzin were detected in water at a concentration of 10–7M. Eurasian watermilfoil bioassays in lake water spiked with various concentrations of terbacil, metribuzin, atrazine, and simazine indicated that the bioresidual activity of these chemicals can be estimated in samples of natural water without extraction or purification. Using aqueous extracts taken from herbicide-treated soil, the Eurasian watermilfoil bioassay detected minimum levels of 0.047 and 0.07 kg/ha terbacil and atrazine, respectively. Neither soybean nor oat showed visible injury symptoms at these concentrations. The Eurasian watermilfoil bioassay has the advantage of being more rapid and/or more sensitive than methods using algae, oat seedlings, or leaf discs.

Research was conducted on a sandy clay loam in Georgia during 1987–88 and 1988–89 to determine winter wheat, oats, barley, and Italian ryegrass tolerance to flurtamone. Flurtamone was applied PPI, PRE, and early POST at 0.28, 0.56, and 1.1 kg ai ha-1. Order of tolerance of the four species was barley > wheat > oat > Italian ryegrass. Flurtamone potentially can be used to control Italian ryegrass in winter wheat and barley, but not in oats. In general, wheat and oat injury with flurtamone was PPI > PRE ≥ early POST, particularly at 1.1 kg ha-1.

Field studies were conducted over a 7-yr period at Lacombe, Alberta, to study the relationship between the duration of Tartary buckwheat interference [Fagopyrum tatarium (L.) Gaertn. # FAGTA] and yield of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), and rapeseed (Brassica campestris L.). The data were pooled over years and analyzed by multiple regression. The equations were as follows: ŷ = 15.46 + 0.39X1 + 0.00x2 −0.11x3 (barley), ŷ = −15.44 + 0.49x1 + 0.02x2 + 0.08x3 (oats), ŷ = −2.04 + 0.39X1 + 0.05x2-0.03x3 (wheat), ŷ = −4.38 + 1.14x1 −0.04x2 + 0.01x3 (flax), and ŷ = −13.85 + 0.40x1 – 0.01x2 + 0.04x3 (rapeseed); where ŷ was the estimated percent yield loss of the crop, x1 was the duration (days) of the Tartary buckwheat in the crop, x2 was the number of Tartary buckwheat plants/m2, and x3 was the number of crop plants/m2. The time that Tartary buckwheat remains in the crop contributed most to the yield loss observed in all crops. Yield loss between 0.4 and 1.1% per day was attributed to this variable alone. For a given x1, x2, and x3 value the order of percent yield loss was flax>oats>wheat> barley>rapeseed.

Experiments were conducted in controlled environmental chambers to determine the influence of temperature on the phytotoxicity of seven soil-applied herbicides. Diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid} soil incorporated or surface applied, was more toxic to wild oat (Avena fatua L.) shoots at 10 and 17 C than at 24 C. Efficacy of diclofop was enhanced with soil incorporation. Diclofop toxicity to wild oat roots was not influenced by a change in temperature. EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) stimulated sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L. ‘American Crystal Hybrid B’) shoot dry weight production at 10 C and caused dry weight reduction at 24 C. Atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] toxicity to barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ‘Larker’) and alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide] toxicity to oats (Avena sativa L. ‘Chief’) increased with increased temperature from 10 to 17 C. Temperatures within the range of 10 to 24 C did not affect trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) toxicity to barley or BAY-5653 [N-(2-benzothiazolyl)-N-methylurea] or chloamben (3-amino-2,5-dichlorobenzoic acid) toxicity to oats.

A series of experiments was carried out on oat to test the efficacies of fluazifop and glyphosate against water-stressed plants, plants grown in low and high nitrogen (N), and plants treated with gibberellic acid (GA). In the laboratory, plants maintained at wilting point for 5 days before and 9 days after spraying with fluazifop (0.5 kg ae/ha) appeared healthy 32 days after herbicide application, while plants supplied with water throughout the experiment were completely chlorotic/necrotic and had main stem detachment from within the leaf sheaths. In the field, plants maintained unirrigated until 14 days after spraying with fluazifop (0.25 kg/ha) or glyphosate (0.18 kg ae/ha) showed greater tolerance of the herbicides than plants irrigated regularly. Under well-watered conditions in the laboratory and field, fluazifop (0.25 kg/ha) and glyphosate (0.18 kg/ha) were less toxic at low N than high N. Increased fluazifop activity at high N was associated with increased transport of herbicide to apical meristems. Addition of 200 μg GA into the leaf sheaths 2 days prior to spraying with fluazifop or glyphosate increased the efficacy of both herbicides at low N.

Experiments were conducted to determine the influence of spray carrier salts, UV light, and temperature on sethoxydim phytotoxicity to oat or yellow foxtail. Spray solution pH and ions present were both important to sethoxydim phytotoxicity to oat. Sodium and calcium salts were antagonistic to sethoxydim phytotoxicity only when the spray carrier pH exceeded 7. Ammonium salts and ammonium hydroxide were synergistic with sethoxydim, and the synergism was independent of spray solution pH. Ammonium sulfate, but not ammonium hydroxide, overcame sodium bicarbonate antagonism of sethoxydim. The antagonism of sethoxydim phytotoxicity by sodium bicarbonate was greatest in the presence of UV light and most pronounced when treated plants were exposed to mid-day sunlight. Sodium bicarbonate or low temperature may reduce the speed of sethoxydim absorption allowing for greater UV degradation of unabsorbed sethoxydim on the leaf surface.

The sensitivities of chlorophyll fluorescence and fresh weight as bioassay techniques for the determination of metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5 (4H)-one], diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], and atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] concentrations in soil were compared. The ratio of the initial inflection point (I) to the variable fluorescence maximum (P) of intact oat (Avena sativa L. ‘Chilocco’) leaves was determined for plants seeded directly into herbicide-treated soil and for those transplanted into treated soil after 14 days of growth in nutrient solution. Using the chlorophyll fluorescence of transplanted oats bioassay, 0-, 0.13-, 0.25-, and 0.50-ppm concentrations could be distinguished from one another within 8 h for metribuzin, within 24 h for diuron, and within 48 h for atrazine. These distinctions between rates could not be made 17 days after seeding into treated soil when using fresh weight as the bioassay indicator. Chlorophyll fluorescence of oats seeded directly into treated soil was also a reliable technique, but required much more time to attain sufficient plant size for convenient chlorophyll fluorescence determinations.

Studies were conducted at the Vegetable Substation in Kibler, AR, in 1992 and 1993, in the same plots, to evaluate weed suppression by spring-seeded cover crops and to determine the effects of cover crop and imazethapyr on no-till southern pea. A plot without cover, conventionally tilled before planting southern pea, served as control. Weed control treatments, applied as subplots in each cover crop, included a weedy check, handweeded check, and half and full rates of imazethapyr (0.035 and 0.07 kg/ha) followed by sethoxydim (0.22 kg/ha). Biomass of Palmer amaranth 6 WAR without herbicides, was less in Italian ryegrass and sorghum-sudangrass residues than in oat residue and no cover crop. Over the years, Palmer amaranth density increased 333% without cover crops and 28% with cover crops. Rice flatsedge density increased four to five times in oat and sorghum-sudangrass residues but remained the same in Italian ryegrass residue. In general, Italian ryegrass residue suppressed the most weeds. Oat residue was least suppressive. Italian ryegrass and sorghum-sudangrass also reduced southern pea stand. Regardless of cover crop and year, half and full rates of imazethapyr followed by sethoxydim equally reduced density of Palmer amaranth, goosegrass, large crabgrass, southwestern cupgrass, and rice flatsedge compared with the untreated check. Residual control of Palmer amaranth by imazethapyr was higher at the full rate than the reduced rate, regardless of cover crop. Half rate of imazethapyr followed by sethoxydim controlled 94 to 100% of Palmer amaranth, rice flatsedge, large crabgrass, and southwestern cupgrass late in the season, regardless of cover crop in 1992 and 1993. Southern pea yield in untilled plots with cover crops was two to three times lower than yield in plots with preplant tillage and no cover crops mostly because of reduction in crop stand in the presence of cover crops.

Experiments were conducted to determine 14C absorption and translocation by oat (Avena sativa L. ‘Lyon’) foliarly treated with 14C-sethoxydim {(2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one)} and various additives. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) oil all similarly increased foliar absorption and translocation of 14C more than palm oil (Elaeis quineensis Jacq.) but less than petroleum oil, when applied without an emulsifier. An emulsifier in the oil additive tended to enhance 14C absorption and translocation more in soybean oil than petroleum oil so that 14C absorption and translocation were similar with both oils containing emulsifiers. Absorption and translocation of 14C tended to increase more with an increase in emulsifier concentration in soybean oil than in petroleum oil but not beyond 15% with either oil. Percentage of 14C absorbed and translocated from 14C-sethoxydim applied to oats increased as the amount of soybean oil applied increased from 2.3 to 4.6 L/ha, but the increase was less for sethoxydim at 0.87 kg ai/ha than at 0.03 or 0.17 kg ai/ha.

Experiments were conducted in the greenhouse and the field to determine the influence of various oil adjuvants on small grain and grass weed susceptibility to foliarly applied BAS-514 OO H (BAS-514). Barnyardgrass, green foxtail, and yellow foxtail were more susceptible to BAS-514 at 0.56 kg ai ha-1 applied with than without an oil adjuvant. Shoot fresh weight reductions of barnyardgrass, green foxtail, and yellow foxtail were greater when BAS-514 at 0.56 kg ha-1 was applied with a methylated seed oil than with a petroleum oil adjuvant in the greenhouse. Differences in the effectiveness among oil adjuvants in enhancing BAS-514 phytotoxicity were more evident in greenhouse than in field experiments. Oil adjuvant enhancement of BAS-514 varied with plant species. Oats, hard red spring wheat, and winter wheat tolerated BAS-514 at 1.1 kg ha-1 foliarly applied with or without an oil adjuvant in the greenhouse. BAS-514 at 0.56 kg ha-1 applied with oil adjuvants caused less than 5% injury to wheat in the field.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to examine weed control with, and potato tolerance to, rimsulfuron or rimsulfuron + metribuzin applied POST. In greenhouse trials, hairy nightshade control with rimsulfuron applied POST at 9 to 35 g/ha was ≥ 90%, but cutleaf nightshade control was < 30%. In field studies, rimsulfuron at 18 to 35 g/ha provided ≥ 85% control of hairy nightshade, redroot pigweed, tumble pigweed, and shepherd's-purse; 75 to 82% control of volunteer oats; and 25 to 87% control of common lambsquarters. Common lambsquarters control was increased to 92 to 100% when rimsulfuron at 18 to 35 g/ha was applied in combination with metribuzin at 280 g/ha. Hairy nightshade and redroot pigweed control usually were not improved by adding metribuzin to the rimsulfuron spray mixture and tumble pigweed and shepherd's-purse control were improved only slightly. Volunteer oat control with rimsulfuron sometimes was antagonized by the addition of metribuzin to the spray mixture. In weed-free trials, yield of potatoes grown for the fresh market or to produce seed tubers was not reduced by rimsulfuron at rates as high as 70 g/ha.

Extensive variability in total lipid composition was observed in seeds of different plant species as well as cultivars within the same species. Susceptibility of plants to soil-incorporated trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) and oryzalin (3,5-dinitro-N4,N4-dipropyisulfanilamide) under greenhouse conditions decreased as the percentage of total lipid in dry seeds increased. Species with high seed lipid levels such as jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], and velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) were less susceptible to these herbicides than were oat [Avena sativa (L.), giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.), and sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] with low seed lipid levels. Velvetleaf was the most tolerant to the herbicides. Corn (Zea mays L.) cultivars with a wide range of seed lipid content (4.45 to 17.0% of dry weight) were germinated in herbicide-free soil, but their roots were allowed to grow through trifluralin- or oryzalin-treated soil. Roots of seedlings from seeds with high lipid content had higher lipid contents than those from low-lipid seeds. There was a significant correlation between root lipid content and sensitivity to trifluralin or oryzalin. Roots high in lipids were less susceptible than those with low amounts of lipids. Similar results were obtained for oat cultivars. The fatty acid composition of plant roots differed among plant species and also among cultivars of the same species. The individual fatty acids did not significantly correlate with susceptibility of roots to trifluralin or oryzalin. Root lipid and fatty acid compositions were not significantly altered by trifluralin or oryzalin treatment.

The influence of soil organic matter on the initial and residual phytotoxicity of thirteen s-triazine herbicides was investigated in greenhouse experiments using three Horotiu sandy loam soils with organic matter levels of 9.8, 15.5, and 20.6%. The amount of herbicide required to reduce the growth of oats (Avena sativa L. ‘Mapua’) by 50% (GR50) when compared with the control was determined for each herbicide and each organic matter level. Results showed that the GR50 values for all herbicides were highly and positively correlated with the soil organic matter. In general, the phytotoxicity of compounds of high water solubility was less influenced by soil organic matter than those having low water solubility. The chloro-triazines persisted longer in soil than did the methoxy- or methylthio-triazines. Simazine [2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine] and atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] were the most persistent of the chloro-triazines.

Research was conducted at the Brandon Research Centre to determine the effect of spray solution pH or adjuvants on the efficacy of two cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicides, clethodim and tralkoxydim, and two aryloxyphenoxypropionate (APP) herbicides, fenoxaprop-P and quizalofop, and if ultraviolet light is a factor influencing their activity. CHD herbicide efficacy decreased as spray solution pH increased above 7. APP herbicide efficacy was not affected by spray solution pH, probably due to their formulation as proherbicide esters. The choice of adjuvant affected CHD herbicide efficacy but not APP herbicide efficacy. Amigo®, Canplus-411® plus ammonium sulfate, and Merge® were usually the most effective adjuvants with the two CHD herbicides. Physical removal of ultraviolet light did not improve APP herbicide efficacy but did improve CHD herbicide efficacy.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the effect of the isooctyl ester of MCPA on the activity of the ethyl ester of fenoxaprop in four grass species. In the greenhouse, wheat tolerated fenoxaprop better than barley, oat, and wild oat. Among wild oat populations, SH 430 was the most tolerant to fenoxaprop followed by MON 73, CS 40, the natural population, and AN 51. MCPA reduced fenoxaprop activity in wheat and barley, protecting the crops from herbicide injury. However, MCPA did not reduce the activity of fenoxaprop in most wild oat lines. In field studies, wheat and barley treated with fenoxaprop at 150 g/ha plus MCPA at 300 g/ha were not appreciably different from weed-free controls while fenoxaprop applied alone at 150 g/ha damaged the crops. Fenoxaprop applied at 150 g/ha in combination with 300 g/ha MCPA resulted in at least 78% wild oat control.

Wheat bulb fly (WBF, Delia coarctata, Fallén, Diptera: Anthomyiidae) is a pest of commercial importance in wheat, barley and rye, with attacked crops failing to produce full potential yields. Females do not oviposit in association with a host-plant; therefore, prompt location of a suitable host is critical to the survival of the newly hatched larvae. The objective of this study was to conduct choice test bioassays to assess the attraction of WBF larvae to specific chemical constituents of WBF host-plant root exudates, the hydroxamic acids DIMBOA (2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one) and MBOA (6-methoxy-benzoxazolin-2-one). The larval response to four concentrations of each test compound was assessed in arena bioassays. Analysis using a Rayleigh test of uniformity of the final resting positions of larvae in response to these chemicals indicated attraction. These results go some way to explaining the mechanisms by which WBF larvae locate host plants, giving the potential to develop semiochemical based control strategies.

Freshly harvested oat (Avena sativa L.) seeds are considered to be dormant because they are unable to germinate at relatively high temperatures (above 20°–25°C). This primary dormancy results partly from the structures surrounding or adjacent to the embryo (pericarp, testa and endosperm) and partly lies in the embryo itself. Incubation of imbibed dormant seeds at 30°C induces a thermodormancy which is expressed as germination in a narrower temperature range. Induction of thermodormancy is apparent after 3–8 hours at 30°C, is optimal after about 1–2 days at this temperature, but diminishes with longer treatment times. Although whole grains become more dormant as a result of such treatment, the embryos themselves become less dormant, therefore the tissues covering or adjacent to the embryos must have become more inhibiting or the embryos have become more sensitive to their inhibitory action. The germination and sensitivity to ABA or oxygen of embryos isolated from such seeds are no longer so dependent on temperature. The effect of high temperature on primary dormancy and induction of thermodormancy is discussed with reference to sensitivity to ABA and temperature.

Dormant dehusked Avena sativa L. (cv. Moyencourt) caryopses germinated easily at 10°C, but their germination was poor at 25 and 30°C. Ethanol overcame their dormancy and allowed germination at the last two temperatures when given continuously at concentrations ranging from 50 to 200 mm, or at higher concentrations at the beginning of imbibition. Ethanol also promoted germination in hypoxia. Other alcohols which were good substrates for alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH: EC 1.1.1.1), such as butanol-1, propanol-1 and 2-propen-1-ol, had the same stimulatory effect as ethanol, whereas alcohols which could not be oxidized by ADH (propanol-2 and methanol) did not improve germination. Salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) did not alter the stimulation of germination induced by ethanol, but 4-methylpyrazole (4-MP, an inhibitor of ADH) completely abolished this stimulation. The improvement of germination by alcohols which were good substrates for ADH was always associated with an increase in oxygen uptake by caryopses, whereas alcohols which were not ADH substrates did not enhance respiration. The stimulation of oxygen uptake induced by ethanol resulted in a decrease in CO2/O2 ratio and was suppressed by 4-MP, but ATP level in embryos was not modified until after the germination of caryopses. All the results obtained seem to demonstrate that the stimulatory action of ethanol on germination of dormant oat caryopses requires its metabolism through ADH and involves an activation of glycolysis and the Krebs cycle.
