Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^N$ , $N\geq 2$ , be an open bounded connected set. We consider the fractional weighted eigenvalue problem $(-\Delta )^s u =\lambda \rho u$ in $\Omega $ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, where $(-\Delta )^s$ , $s\in (0,1)$ , is the fractional Laplacian operator, $\lambda \in \mathbb {R}$ and $ \rho \in L^\infty (\Omega )$ .

We study weak* continuity, convexity and Gâteaux differentiability of the map $\rho \mapsto 1/\lambda _1(\rho )$ , where $\lambda _1(\rho )$ is the first positive eigenvalue. Moreover, denoting by $\mathcal {G}(\rho _0)$ the class of rearrangements of $\rho _0$ , we prove the existence of a minimizer of $\lambda _1(\rho )$ when $\rho $ varies on $\mathcal {G}(\rho _0)$ . Finally, we show that, if $\Omega $ is Steiner symmetric, then every minimizer shares the same symmetry.

We look for best partitions of the unit interval that minimize certain functionals defined in terms of the eigenvalues of Sturm–Liouville problems. Via Γ-convergence theory, we study the asymptotic distribution of the minimizers as the number of intervals of the partition tends to infinity. Then we discuss several examples that fit in our framework, such as the sum of (positive and negative) powers of the eigenvalues and an approximation of the trace of the heat Sturm–Liouville operator.

The eigenvalue problem $-{{\Delta }_{p}}u-{{\Delta }_{q}}u=\lambda {{\left| u \right|}^{q-2}}u$ with $p\,\in \,\left( 1,\,\infty \right),\,q\,\in \,\left( 2,\,\infty \right),\,p\ne \,q$ subject to the corresponding homogeneous Neumann boundary condition is investigated on a bounded open set with smooth boundary from ${{\mathbb{R}}^{N}}$ with $N\,\ge \,2$. A careful analysis of this problem leads us to a complete description of the set of eigenvalues as being a precise interval $\left( {{\lambda }_{1,}}+\infty \right)$ plus an isolated point $\lambda \,=\,0$. This comprehensive result is strongly related to our framework, which is complementary to the well-known case $p\,=\,q\,\ne \,2$ for which a full description of the set of eigenvalues is still unavailable.

It has been shown by Kesavan (Proc. R. Soc. Edinb. A (133) (2003), 617–624) that the first eigenvalue for the Dirichlet Laplacian in a punctured ball, with the puncture having the shape of a ball, is maximum if and only if the balls are concentric. Recently, Emamizadeh and Zivari-Rezapour (Proc. Am. Math. Soc.136 (2007), 1325–1331) have tried to generalize this result to the case of the p-Laplacian but could succeed only in proving a domain monotonicity result for a weighted eigenvalue problem in which the weights need to satisfy some artificial conditions. In this paper we generalize the result of Kesavan to the case of the p-Laplacian (1 < p < ∞) without any artificial restrictions, and in the process we simplify greatly the proof, even in the case of the Laplacian. The uniqueness of the maximizing domain in the nonlinear case is still an open question.

This paper investigates the eigenmode optimization problem governed by the scalar Helmholtz equation in continuum system in which the computed eigenmode approaches the prescribed eigenmode in the whole domain. The first variation for the eigenmode optimization problem is evaluated by the quadratic penalty method, the adjoint variable method, and the formula based on sensitivity analysis. A penalty optimization algorithm is proposed, in which the density evolution is accomplished by introducing an artificial time term and solving an additional ordinary differential equation. The validity of the presented algorithm is confirmed by numerical results of the first and second eigenmode optimizations in 1D and 2D problems.
