We apply the Evans–Kishimoto intertwining argument to the classification of actions of discrete amenable groups into the normalizer of a full group of an ergodic transformation. Our proof does not depend on the types of ergodic transformations.

Our first result is a noncommutative form of the Jessen-Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund theorem for the maximal limit of multiparametric martingales or ergodic means. It implies bilateral almost uniform convergence (a noncommutative analogue of almost everywhere convergence) with initial data in the expected Orlicz spaces. A key ingredient is the introduction of the $L_p$ -norm of the $\limsup $ of a sequence of operators as a localized version of a $\ell _\infty /c_0$ -valued $L_p$ -space. In particular, our main result gives a strong $L_1$ -estimate for the $\limsup $ —as opposed to the usual weak $L_{1,\infty }$ -estimate for the $\mathop {\mathrm {sup}}\limits $ —with interesting consequences for the free group algebra.

Let $\mathcal{L} \mathbf{F} _2$ denote the free group algebra with $2$ generators, and consider the free Poisson semigroup generated by the usual length function. It is an open problem to determine the largest class inside $L_1(\mathcal{L} \mathbf{F} _2)$ for which the free Poisson semigroup converges to the initial data. Currently, the best known result is $L \log ^2 L(\mathcal{L} \mathbf{F} _2)$ . We improve this result by adding to it the operators in $L_1(\mathcal{L} \mathbf{F} _2)$ spanned by words without signs changes. Contrary to other related results in the literature, this set grows exponentially with length. The proof relies on our estimates for the noncommutative $\limsup $ together with new transference techniques.

We also establish a noncommutative form of Córdoba/Feffermann/Guzmán inequality for the strong maximal: more precisely, a weak $(\Phi ,\Phi )$ inequality—as opposed to weak $(\Phi ,1)$ —for noncommutative multiparametric martingales and $\Phi (s) = s (1 + \log _+ s)^{2 + \varepsilon }$ . This logarithmic power is an $\varepsilon $ -perturbation of the expected optimal one. The proof combines a refinement of Cuculescu’s construction with a quantum probabilistic interpretation of M. de Guzmán’s original argument. The commutative form of our argument gives the simplest known proof of this classical inequality. A few interesting consequences are derived for Cuculescu’s projections.

We study C1-robustly transitive and nonhyperbolic diffeomorphisms having a partially hyperbolic splitting with one-dimensional central bundle whose strong un-/stable foliations are both minimal. In dimension 3, an important class of examples of such systems is given by those with a simple closed periodic curve tangent to the central bundle. We prove that there is a C1-open and dense subset of such diffeomorphisms such that every nonhyperbolic ergodic measure (i.e. with zero central exponent) can be approximated in the weak* topology and in entropy by measures supported in basic sets with positive (negative) central Lyapunov exponent. Our method also allows to show how entropy changes across measures with central Lyapunov exponent close to zero. We also prove that any nonhyperbolic ergodic measure is in the intersection of the convex hulls of the measures with positive central exponent and with negative central exponent.

Given a smooth compact surface without focal points and of higher genus, it is shown that its geodesic flow is semi-conjugate to a continuous expansive flow with a local product structure such that the semi-conjugation preserves time parametrization. It is concluded that the geodesic flow has a unique measure of maximal entropy.

Call a function h a (δ, ε) -sweeping function if ‖h‖∞ ≤ 1, ‖h‖1 < ε, and if max1≤k≤K|Tkh| > δ-ε on a set of measure greater than 1 - ε. The following is the main technical result, which is obtained by elementary estimates. There is an integer K = K(δ, ε) ≥ 1 such that if f is a δ-spanning function, and if the joint distribution of (f , T1f , . . . ,TKf) is normal, then h = ((fΛM)Ꮩ(-M)/M is a (δ, ε)-sweeping function, for some M > 0. Furthermore, if Tks are the averages of operators induced by the iterates of ameasure preserving ergodic transformation, then a similar result is true without requiring that the joint distribution is normal. This gives the following theorem on a sequence (Ti) of these averages.Assume that for each K ≤ 1 there is a subsequence (Ti1 , . . . ,Tik) of length K, and a δ-spanning function fK for this subsequence. Then for each ε > 0 there is a function h, 0 ≥ h ≥ 1, ‖h‖1 < ε, such that lim supi Tih ≤ δ a.e.. Another application of the main result gives a refinement of a part of Bourgain’s “Entropy Theorem”, resulting in a different, self contained proof of that theorem.

We consider the Riesz product with a constant coefficient and odometer action over infinite product spaces. By studying the ratio set we can conclude the type of the above dynamical systems is III1.

Neveu's exchange formula relates the Palm probabilities with respect to two jointly stationary simple point processes. We give a new proof of the exchange formula by using a simple result from discrete time stationary stochastic processes.

Sufficient as well as necessary and sufficient conditions for the pointwise, almost-everywhere convergence of are developed for a particular class of weight functions φk. Specifically, let {τk: ℝn → ℝn} be a sequence of measurable, non-singular maps with measurable, non-singular inverses such that the Radon-Nikodym derivatives dλ oτk /dλ and dλ oτk-1 / dλ are L∞ (ℝn), and such that τk and τ-1 map bounded sets to bounded sets. We examine convergence for the sequence where θk is an a.e.-convergent sequence of weight functions which are dominated by a fixed L1(ℝn) function with bounded support.

Let be a semigroup of measure preserving transformations on a measure space (Ω, ℱ, μ). The main result of the paper is the proof of a.e. convergence for the moving averages where {FIn} is a superadditive process and {In} is a sequence of cubes in satisfying the "cone-condition". The identification of the limit is given. A moving local theorem is also proved.

Let ℝ denote the real line. Let {Tt}tєℝ be a measure preserving ergodic flow on a non atomic finite measure space (X, ℱ, μ). A nonnegative function φ on ℝ is called a weight function if ∫ℝ φ(t)dt = 1. Consider the weighted ergodic averages

of a function f X —> ℝ, where {θk} is a sequence of weight functions. Some sufficient and some necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the a.e. convergence of Akf, in particular for a special case in which

where φ is a fixed weight function and {(ak, rk)} is a sequence of pairs of real numbers such that rk > 0 for all k. These conditions are obtained by a combination of the methods of Bellow-Jones-Rosenblatt, developed to deal with moving ergodic averages, and the methods of Broise-Déniel-Derriennic, developed to deal with unbounded weight functions.

We generalize a result of L. Sucheston on obtaining multiparameter ergodic theorems from their single parameter versions. This result is then employed to prove a multiparameter, subsequence ergodic theorem for operator averages along special zero density subsequences.

The converse of the dominated ergodic theorem in infinite measure spaces is extended to non-singular transformations, i.e. transformations that only preserve the measure of null sets. An inverse weak maximal inequality is given and then applied to obtain related results in Orlicz spaces.

We show that when a positive contraction of type (p, q) is equipped with a positive norming function having full support, then it is related in a natural way to operators on other Lp spaces.

Let T be a non-singular, conservative, ergodic automorphism of a Lebesgue space. We study a kind of weighted cocycles called H-cocycles. We introduce the notions of H-superrecurrence and H-supertransience. We use skew products to give necessary and sufficient conditions for H-superrecurrence.

In this note we observe two consequences of Brunei's recent theorem. If T1,..., Tn are majorized by positive power-bounded operators S1,..., Sn of Lp, 1 < p < ∞, for which the ergodic theorem holds, then a multiple sequence ergodic theorem holds for T1,....,Tn. Further, the individual convergence for each Tk can be taken along uniform sequences.

In this article, we obtain the stochastic ergodic theorem for general additive processes. That is, we prove that there exists , such that whenever α > 0 and A is a measurable set with μ(A) < ∞, where and {U(ij)}} an arbitrary (two dimensional) semigroup of L1 -contractions. This result generalizes the stochastic ergodic theorem (SET) of U. Krengel and the SET of M. A. Akcoglu and L. Sucheston.

A random map is a discrete time process in which one of a number of maps, 𝓜, is chosen at random at each stage and applied. In this note we study a random map, where 𝓜 is a set of piecewise linear Markov maps on [0, 1]. Sufficient conditions are presented which allow the determination of the unique absolutely continuous invariant measure of the process.
