We study the vectorial length compactification of the space of conjugacy classes of maximal representations of the fundamental group $\Gamma$ of a closed hyperbolic surface $\Sigma$ in $\textrm{PSL}(2,{\mathbb{R}})^n$. We identify the boundary with the sphere ${\mathbb{P}}(({\mathcal{ML}})^n)$, where $\mathcal{ML}$ is the space of measured geodesic laminations on $\Sigma$. In the case $n=2$, we give a geometric interpretation of the boundary as the space of homothety classes of ${\mathbb{R}}^2$-mixed structures on $\Sigma$. We associate to such a structure a dual tree-graded space endowed with an ${\mathbb{R}}_+^2$-valued metric, which we show to be universal with respect to actions on products of two $\mathbb{R}$-trees with the given length spectrum.

In this note we investigate the centraliser of a linearly growing element of $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ (that is, a root of a Dehn twist automorphism), and show that it has a finite index subgroup mapping onto a direct product of certain “equivariant McCool groups” with kernel a finitely generated free abelian group. In particular, this allows us to show it is VF and hence finitely presented.

The Basilica group is a well-known 2-generated weakly branch, but not branch, group acting on the binary rooted tree. Recently, a more general form of the Basilica group has been investigated by Petschick and Rajeev, which is an $s$-generated weakly branch, but not branch, group that acts on the $m$-adic tree, for $s,m\ge 2$. A larger family of groups, which contains these generalised Basilica groups, is the family of iterated monodromy groups. With the new developments by Francoeur, the study of the existence of maximal subgroups of infinite index has been extended from branch groups to weakly branch groups. Here we show that a subfamily of iterated monodromy groups, which more closely resemble the generalised Basilica groups, have maximal subgroups only of finite index.

We prove a nonarchimedean analogue of Jørgensen’s inequality, and use it to deduce several algebraic convergence results. As an application, we show that every dense subgroup of ${\mathrm {SL}_2}(K)$, where K is a p-adic field, contains two elements that generate a dense subgroup of ${\mathrm {SL}_2}(K)$, which is a special case of a result by Breuillard and Gelander [‘On dense free subgroups of Lie groups’, J. Algebra 261(2) (2003), 448–467]. We also list several other related results, which are well known to experts, but not easy to locate in the literature; for example, we show that a nonelementary subgroup of ${\mathrm {SL}_2}(K)$ over a nonarchimedean local field K is discrete if and only if each of its two-generator subgroups is discrete.

We classify the irreducible unitary representations of closed simple groups of automorphisms of trees acting $2$-transitively on the boundary and whose local action at every vertex contains the alternating group. As an application, we confirm Claudio Nebbia’s CCR conjecture on trees for $(d_0,d_1)$-semi-regular trees such that $d_0,d_1\in \Theta $, where $\Theta $ is an asymptotically dense set of positive integers.

We construct an unfolding path in Outer space which does not converge in the boundary, and instead it accumulates on the entire 1-simplex of projectivized length measures on a nongeometric arational ${\mathbb R}$-tree T. We also show that T admits exactly two dual ergodic projective currents. This is the first nongeometric example of an arational tree that is neither uniquely ergodic nor uniquely ergometric.

Every countable group G can be embedded in a finitely generated group $G^*$ that is hopfian and complete, that is, $G^*$ has trivial centre and every epimorphism $G^*\to G^*$ is an inner automorphism. Every finite subgroup of $G^*$ is conjugate to a finite subgroup of G. If G has a finite presentation (respectively, a finite classifying space), then so does $G^*$. Our construction of $G^*$ relies on the existence of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds that are asymmetric and non-Haken.

We prove a joint partial equidistribution result for common perpendiculars with given density on equidistributing equidistant hypersurfaces, towards a measure supported on truncated stable leaves. We recover a result of Marklof on the joint partial equidistribution of Farey fractions at a given density, and give several analogous arithmetic applications, including in Bruhat–Tits trees.

We generalise some known results for limit groups over free groups and residually free groups to limit groups over Droms RAAGs and residually Droms RAAGs, respectively. We show that limit groups over Droms RAAGs are free-by-(torsion-free nilpotent). We prove that if S is a full subdirect product of type $FP_s(\mathbb{Q})$ of limit groups over Droms RAAGs with trivial center, then the projection of S to the direct product of any s of the limit groups over Droms RAAGs has finite index. Moreover, we compute the growth of homology groups and the volume gradients for limit groups over Droms RAAGs in any dimension and for finitely presented residually Droms RAAGs of type $FP_m$ in dimensions up to m. In particular, this gives the values of the analytic $L^2$-Betti numbers of these groups in the respective dimensions.

Let $\Sigma $ be a closed surface other than the sphere, the torus, the projective plane or the Klein bottle. We construct a continuum of probability measure preserving ergodic minimal profinite actions for the fundamental group of $\Sigma $ that are topologically free but not essentially free, a property that we call allostery. Moreover, the invariant random subgroups we obtain are pairwise distincts.

Let G be a group that is either virtually soluble or virtually free, and let ω be a weight on G. We prove that if G is infinite, then there is some maximal left ideal of finite codimension in the Beurling algebra $\ell^1(G, \omega)$, which fails to be (algebraically) finitely generated. This implies that a conjecture of Dales and Żelazko holds for these Banach algebras. We then go on to give examples of weighted groups for which this property fails in a strong way. For instance, we describe a Beurling algebra on an infinite group in which every closed left ideal of finite codimension is finitely generated and which has many such ideals in the sense of being residually finite dimensional. These examples seem to be hard cases for proving Dales and Żelazko’s conjecture.

We construct finitely generated groups of small period growth, i.e. groups where the maximum order of an element of word length n grows very slowly in n. This answers a question of Bradford related to the lawlessness growth of groups and is connected to an approximative version of the restricted Burnside problem.

Inspired by the phase transition results for non-singular Gaussian actions introduced in [AIM19], we prove several phase transition results for non-singular Bernoulli actions. For generalized Bernoulli actions arising from groups acting on trees, we are able to give a very precise description of their ergodic-theoretical properties in terms of the Poincaré exponent of the group.

We initiate the study of outer automorphism groups of special groups $G$, in the Haglund–Wise sense. We show that $\operatorname {Out}(G)$ is infinite if and only if $G$ splits over a co-abelian subgroup of a centraliser and there exists an infinite-order ‘generalised Dehn twist’. Similarly, the coarse-median preserving subgroup $\operatorname {Out}_{\rm cmp}(G)$ is infinite if and only if $G$ splits over an actual centraliser and there exists an infinite-order coarse-median-preserving generalised Dehn twist. The proof is based on constructing and analysing non-small, stable $G$-actions on $\mathbb {R}$-trees whose arc-stabilisers are centralisers or closely related subgroups. Interestingly, tripod-stabilisers can be arbitrary centralisers, and thus are large subgroups of $G$. As a result of independent interest, we determine when generalised Dehn twists associated to splittings of $G$ preserve the coarse median structure.

We extend the Burger–Mozes theory of closed, nondiscrete, locally quasiprimitive automorphism groups of locally finite, connected graphs to the semiprimitive case, and develop a generalization of Burger–Mozes universal groups acting on the regular tree $T_{d}$ of degree $d\in \mathbb {N}_{\ge 3}$. Three applications are given. First, we characterize the automorphism types that the quasicentre of a nondiscrete subgroup of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Aut}}(T_{d})$ may feature in terms of the group’s local action. In doing so, we explicitly construct closed, nondiscrete, compactly generated subgroups of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Aut}}(T_{d})$ with nontrivial quasicentre, and see that the Burger–Mozes theory does not extend further to the transitive case. We then characterize the $(P_{k})$-closures of locally transitive subgroups of $\operatorname {\mathrm {Aut}}(T_{d})$ containing an involutive inversion, and thereby partially answer two questions by Banks et al. [‘Simple groups of automorphisms of trees determined by their actions on finite subtrees’, J. Group Theory 18(2) (2015), 235–261]. Finally, we offer a new view on the Weiss conjecture.

A connected, locally finite graph $\Gamma $ is a Cayley–Abels graph for a totally disconnected, locally compact group G if G acts vertex-transitively on $\Gamma $ with compact, open vertex stabilizers. Define the minimal degree of G as the minimal degree of a Cayley–Abels graph of G. We relate the minimal degree in various ways to the modular function, the scale function and the structure of compact open subgroups. As an application, we prove that if $T_{d}$ denotes the d-regular tree, then the minimal degree of $\mathrm{Aut}(T_{d})$ is d for all $d\geq 2$ .

The ring $\mathbb Z_{d}$ of d-adic integers has a natural interpretation as the boundary of a rooted d-ary tree $T_{d}$ . Endomorphisms of this tree (that is, solenoidal maps) are in one-to-one correspondence with 1-Lipschitz mappings from $\mathbb Z_{d}$ to itself. In the case when $d=p$ is prime, Anashin [‘Automata finiteness criterion in terms of van der Put series of automata functions’,p-Adic Numbers Ultrametric Anal. Appl. 4(2) (2012), 151–160] showed that $f\in \mathrm {Lip}^{1}(\mathbb Z_{p})$ is defined by a finite Mealy automaton if and only if the reduced coefficients of its van der Put series constitute a p-automatic sequence over a finite subset of $\mathbb Z_{p}\cap \mathbb Q$ . We generalize this result to arbitrary integers $d\geq 2$ and describe the explicit connection between the Moore automaton producing such a sequence and the Mealy automaton inducing the corresponding endomorphism of a rooted tree. We also produce two algorithms converting one automaton to the other and vice versa. As a demonstration, we apply our algorithms to the Thue–Morse sequence and to one of the generators of the lamplighter group acting on the binary rooted tree.

A Grigorchuk–Gupta–Sidki (GGS)-group is a subgroup of the automorphism group of the p-regular rooted tree for an odd prime p, generated by one rooted automorphism and one directed automorphism. Pervova proved that all torsion GGS-groups do not have maximal subgroups of infinite index. Here, we extend the result to nontorsion GGS-groups, which include the weakly regular branch, but not branch, GGS-group.

We generalize results of Thomas, Allcock, Thom–Petersen, and Kar–Niblo to the first $\ell ^{2}$-Betti number of quotients of certain groups acting on trees by subgroups with free actions on the edge sets of the graphs.

We show that the countable universal homogeneous meet-tree has a generic automorphism, but it does not have a generic pair of automorphisms.
