David Lock, Men's Group for Bevan Ward Bedroom Communal Area, 2021
David Lock created this painting for Bevan Ward, a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit for men at East London NHS Foundation Trust following a vibrant workshop on the ward. It is a group portrait of a community of men and the figures were derived from a photograph of Romare Bearden's Cinque Gallery in the 1970's. In the background is ‘Road’ by Alex Katz and in the centre of the table is a beautiful bouquet. David said, “For me, these functioned like a gift. They cannot have them on the ward so they act like an offering.”
This artwork was commissioned by Hospital Rooms, an arts charity that brings art and creative activity to inpatient mental health wards around the UK.
