The American Political Science Association invites applications for participation in the summer 2012 Africa Workshops, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. All costs of participation (travel, lodging, meals, daily stipend, and materials) for up to 20 Africa-based and 3 US-based participants will be covered. The working language of the workshop is English.
The workshop is targeted principally at university and college faculty in the social sciences residing in Africa who have completed their PhD and are in the early stages of their academic career. Up to three US advanced PhD students will also be accepted. All workshop fellows must be actively engaged in an empirical research project in political science or an area of inquiry related to politics. Fellows should be working on a manuscript, paper, book chapter, or article that can be developed during the workshop into an eventual article-length publication.
As of this writing, the selection of workshop leaders and themes continues. Prior workshops have focused on “Representation Reconsidered: Ethnic Politics and Africa's Governance Institutions in Comparative Perspective” (Nairobi, 2011), “Global Perspectives on Politics and Gender” (Dar es Salaam, 2010), “Elections and Democracy” (Accra, 2009), and “Political Participation” (Dakar, 2008).
