The oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a very serious pest of fruit trees, causing enormous economic losses globally. The present study examines the capability of an artificial neural network (ANN) with a Quasi-Newton (QN) algorithm to predict a fruit fly trap catch and compare the results with those of a traditional regression model. MATLAB 7.0 was used to develop ANN programming and the fortnightly measurement of 14 input variables (abiotic along with biotic variables) provided the database for analysing the ANN model. An input model using a total of 14 identified input nodes with a selected QN-ANN structure (14-25-20-1) gave an optimum result. In general, the present study showed that an ANN could be used to estimate fruit fly trap catch with enhanced accuracy (R2 = 0.92; root mean square error (RMSE) = 23.75; Nash–Sutcliffe efficiencies = 0.99) over traditional regression models (R2 = 0.76; RMSE = 30.28; Nash–Sutcliffe efficiencies = 0.76). This finding helps the region-specific fruit fly monitoring and management programmes that lack long-term historic data.

Food security is a problem in many developing and less developed countries due to increase in human population and decrease in crop productivity and food availability. Edible insects are a natural renewable resource of food providing carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. As such, entomophagy is common in ethnic groups in South America, Mexico, Africa and Asia, where indigenous insects are easily available and are consumed in various forms (raw/processed) or used as an ingredient or supplement in modern recipes. Entomophagy therefore offers an opportunity to bridge the protein gap of human foods irrespective of a few constraints that are discussed. Concerning food security, more attention is needed to assess and revalidate entomophagy in the context of modern life. Further research would be necessary to exploit insect biodiversity and ethno-entomophagy, stop overexploitation of these insects, and initiate actions for insect conservation.

Deployment of cowpea with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt-cowpea), to control Maruca vitrata Fab., must be preceded by the development of an insect resistance management (IRM) plan to ensure a sustainable use of the in-plant protection offered by the transgenic variety. One of the components of a resistance management plan involves the use of wild or cultivated host plants as refugia. In West Africa, wild refugia have the potential to be a major component of such an IRM strategy. In the current study, we examined the occurrence of M. vitrata on three cultivated cowpea varieties and one wild alternative host, Sesbania pachycarpa D.C. Our results indicate that M. vitrata population overlapped on the wild host and cowpea. The overall insect population on S. pachycarpa represents 9–13% of the population on cultivated cowpea. Based on these findings, we suggest that S. pachycarpa may contribute as a refuge for M. vitrata population in case of deployment of Bt-cowpea.

The larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus Horn and the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky are important pests of stored maize in the tropics, particularly where maize is stored on-farm with little control of moisture content and without use of pesticides. This study was undertaken to determine level of resistance among new experimental maize hybrids against P. truncatus and S. zeamais. Out of the 54 experimental hybrids tested, eight hybrids were resistant, six were susceptible and the remaining 40 hybrids were moderately resistant. Five hybrids showed considerable reduction in losses for both P. truncatus and S. zeamais (CKPH08013, CKPH08021, CKPH08003, CKPH08004 and CKPH08009), suggesting that they contained genes that confer resistance to the two pests. Low grain weight loss, powder production and low insect multiplication on resistant grains reduce the negative impact of the two beetle pests. Therefore, host plant resistance can be used as a vital component of an integrated pest management strategy against P. truncatus and S. zeamais.

The amino acid, fatty acid and mineral composition of Aspongubus viduatus F. (melon bug) and Agonoscelis pubescens (Thunberg) (sorghum bug) were investigated. The approximate analyses of A. viduatus and A. pubescens adults showed 8.3 and 7.6% moisture, 27.0 and 28.2% crude protein, 54.2 and 57.3% fat and 3.5 and 2.5% ash on a dry-matter basis, respectively. The bug protein contained 16 amino acids, including all of the essential ones. Compared with the amino acid profile recommended by FAO/WHO, the protein was of medium quality. The most predominant fatty acids in melon bug oil were oleic, palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids, viz. 45.5, 31.3, 4.9 and 0.48%, respectively, and in sorghum bug 41.15, 11.41, 35.28 and 1.28%, respectively. The mineral analysis indicated high P and K content. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study ground insect structure before and after oil extraction. Micrographs of full-fat ground insects were different from defatted ones.

A survey on the occurrence of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) was conducted in selected banana fields from three regions in Tanzania, namely Mbeya (Southern Highlands), Morogoro (Lowland) and Pwani (Coast). The main objective of this study was to isolate EPNs naturally occurring in banana fields in Tanzania and to test their effect on banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus Germar 1824). We report for the first time the presence of EPNs in Tanzania where four (4.4%) out of 90 samples contained nematodes in the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis. EPNs were only isolated in the coastal region in soils with a high sand content. The virulence of nine EPN isolates was tested against larvae and adults of C. sordidus. All isolates caused mortality of the larval stages, whereas the adults appeared resistant to nematode infection. Larval mortality was found to increase significantly with increasing nematode dose. It was also shown that nematodes were able to penetrate and establish in the banana weevil larvae in increasing numbers with increasing nematode dose. The study indicates the potential for including EPNs in management strategies of banana weevil.

Nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) was isolated from infected Hyposidra talaca (Walker) caterpillars. This defoliating pest was sampled from the Terai and Dooars tea plantations along the foothills of Darjeeling, India. Phase contrast and transmission electron microscopy revealed polyhedral occlusion bodies (OBs) typical of NPVs. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis showed that the molecular weight of the major protein of the OBs is 32.17 kDa. Dose–mortality bioassays conducted for OBs on the second instar caterpillars of H. talaca resulted in a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 2.8 × 103 OBs/ml. The median lethal time (LT50) was 5.45 days for 1 × 104 OBs/ml, 4.15 days for 1 × 105 OBs/ml and 4.05 days for 1 × 106 OBs/ml concentrations. These results indicate the potential of using this NPV as a microbial pesticide against H. talaca.

Adparaproba gabrieli Carvalho is a phytophagous neotropical bug with a restricted distribution to southeast Brazil. The histology of the digestive system and that of the male and female reproductive tracts of A. gabrieli was studied. We found that the male had a pair of testes with two follicles per testis, two short vasa defentia that joined in a muscular ejaculatory duct with two pairs of well-developed accessory glands. The female has a meroistic telotrophic ovary with three ovarioles per ovary. There is a pair of sac-like salivary glands. The digestive tract, after the pharynx, has a long, thin oesophagus ending in a muscular proventriculus. The transition fore-midgut is marked by a stomodeal valve, and the midgut is the main organ with an anterior portion with columnar cells and an posterior one with flattened cells. The hindgut is short and differentiated in the ileum and rectum. The Malpighian tubules are also described and the phytophagous feeding habit of A. gabrieli is discussed.

Successful mass production of biocontrol agents is a prerequisite to their effective use in the field. Thus in the present study the suitability of ten aphid species of a ladybird beetle Anegleis cardoni (Weise) in terms of growth, development, survival and mortality life table attributes was assessed for the purpose of mass production. The study revealed that the developmental duration of the immature stages of A. cardoni was shortest when fed on Uroleucon compositae (Theobald), Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), Hyadaphis coriandri (Das) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) in comparison with other aphid species. Immature survival, development rate, adult weight and growth index were also highest when A. cardoni larvae were fed on these aphids, while lowest when fed on Hysteroneura setariae (Thomas) and Ceratovacuna silvestri (Takahashi). Any larva of A. cardoni did not reach adult stage when fed on Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe; therefore it may be considered as a toxic prey. Life table data revealed that the overall mortality prior to adult stage was lowest in U. compositae and highest in C. silvestri. The first instars suffered the highest mortality in comparison with other instars on all the aphid species tested. However, the life expectancy for each aphid species as prey revealed a continuous decline with the advancement of age. Thus among all the ten aphid species tested, U. compositae, R. maidis, H. coriandri and M. persicae were found equally suitable for mass production of A. cardoni.

Experiments were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of a semi-synthetic diet developed from locally available ingredients in Saudi Arabia for the laboratory rearing of the red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Oliv. The diet was developed based on existing literature, in addition to screening for a number of ingredients from locally available materials. Maize flour, wheat flour, shredded date palm frond tissue and distilled water were chosen as the final ingredients for the diet. Red palm weevils were successfully reared on this semi-synthetic diet and these ingredients were found capable of supporting larval development. However, larval weight decreased on this diet. The larval growth rate on the semi-synthetic diet was comparable to the standard growth rate achieved on date palm. One additional larval instar was observed on the diet. No significant differences were observed in the tested behavioural parameters between females fed the semi-synthetic diet versus those fed the natural diet. In conclusion, red palm weevils can be successfully reared on this semi-synthetic diet, and further optimization of it is warranted.

Botanical insecticides are among the most promising alternatives to synthetic insecticides for stored product protection. Calneem oil from Ghana and local neem oils from two localities in northern Cameroon (Garoua and Maroua) were tested at 0 (untreated control), 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 ml/kg, on the adult and immature stages of the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky), for mortality and reproduction inhibition. The neem oils from Cameroon were extracted using the traditional kneading method and a hydraulic press in the laboratory (refined). Maize grains were coated with the five neem seed oils (Calneem, Garoua traditional and refined, and Maroua traditional and refined, respectively) and adult mortality was recorded at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after exposure. Within 1 day of exposure, the highest tested concentration (12 ml/kg) of Calneem, Garoua traditional, Garoua refined, Maroua traditional and Maroua refined oils caused similar weevil mortality of 86.3, 93.8, 93.8, 97.5 and 97.5%, respectively. The 24-h LC50values for the oils in the same order were 7.0, 6.0, 5.0, 5.0 and 4.8 ml/kg, respectively. The lowest (2 ml/kg) and highest (12 ml/kg) concentrations of the oils suppressed progeny production by over 80 and 98%, respectively. The oils arrested the development of the hidden eggs and immature stages in the maize grains. The results suggested that neem seed oils from different localities of northern Cameroon, irrespective of the method of extraction, were effective for the protection of stored maize against S. zeamais. The promotion of natural neem seed oils as stored grain protectants in Cameroon would boost food security, alleviate poverty and reduce environmental degradation.

Biology, morphometrics and analyses of non-specific esterases were carried out for populations of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) collected from leucaena [Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit] in New Delhi, India and compared with those for cotton populations. The developmental periods of the egg, and the first to fourth instars of the leucaena populations were 6.7 ± 0.18, 4.2 ± 0.18, 3.8 ± 0.14, 3.0 ± 0.0 and 5.2 ± 0.18 days, respectively, with a total life-cycle duration of 22.9 ± 0.58 days; fecundity (62.60 ± 61.53 eggs per female) and longevity (male: 13.50 ± 0.12 days, female: 16.50 ± 0.12 days) were higher than those recorded for the cotton population, with a sex ratio (male:female) of 1:3.7 in cotton and 1:4 in leucaena. Morphometrics revealed significant differences in the length of egg, second, third and fourth instars (P < 0.05). Of the 62 measurements of the puparia analysed, 70% of those of the head, 44% of those of the thorax and 51% of those of the abdomen showed significant differences between the cotton and leucaena populations. Mapping of the host association of samples onto principal component ordination showed their significant separation according to host plants, with the first three principal components accounting for 66% of the total variation. The analysis of non-specific esterases showed two bands at Rm E0.18 and E0.23 in the cotton populations but not in the leucaena populations. So far, B. tabaci is known on leucaena only from Taiwan. The present study reports it as a new host record from India in addition to documenting the biology, morphometrics and esterases of this and a cotton population.

The structure of two compounds extracted from the leaves of Vitex negundo L., their repellent activity and toxicity against three strains of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) were elucidated. Two compounds were purified and a residual film bioassay was used to evaluate the toxicity to adult T. castaneum. Mortality was recorded 24, 48 and 72 h post-exposure to compounds. The repellency activity of methanol extract was tested by using nine concentrations. Each dose was applied on a half circle of the filter paper, keeping the other part untreated. Insects released on treated filter paper were assessed for repellency up to 5 h. Two bioactive compounds, 22,23-dihydro-α-spinasterol-β-d-glucoside and salicylic acid were isolated from the methanolic leaf extracts by column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Their structures were elucidated by various spectroscopic methods. Compound 22,23-dihydro-α-spinasterol-β-d-glucoside is the first report from this plant. Both compounds showed insecticidal activity and the leaf extracts caused 100% repellency in the three tested strains of T. castaneum. Both compounds showed toxicity to T. castaneum, but compound 22,23-dihydro-α-spinasterol-β-d-glucoside was more potent. Its potential future use as herbal insecticide against T. castaneum is discussed.

The activity of five enzymes – amylase, α-glucosidase, cellulase, proteinase and lipase – present in the foregut, midgut and hindgut of the African variegated grasshopper Zonocerus variegatus (L.) was studied in the post-embryonic stages of the insect. The activities of all the enzymes increased with age of the insect, with the adult stage having significantly higher (P < 0.05) activity than the lower instars. The midgut had the highest activity for all the enzymes except for amylase. Proteinase activity was the highest, and cellulase the lowest in the gut regions. These findings indicate that the adult stage of the polyphagous insect has higher digestive capacity than the immature stages.

The Nocardiaceae family members are symbiont bacteria from triatomine insects. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of Nocardiaceae family bacteria in Rhodnius ecuadoriensis intestinal bacterial flora. Bacterial colonies were isolated from the intestinal content from all insects; they had pink or coral pink pigmentation corresponding to Gram-positive coccobacilli. These isolates' biochemical identification by catalase and urease tests and the assimilation of different carbon sources led to Rhodococcus rhodnii being identified. This result was confirmed by 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene sequencing. Additional studies are required to establish the symbiont role of this bacterium in R. ecuadoriensis as it has in Rhodnius prolixus.

Hyposidra talaca (Walk.) is a major pest of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) in Northeastern (NE) India. The present study examined (1) the likely causes of expansion of H. talaca to tea from its ancestral home of sal forests, and (2) the anti-predatory mechanisms that helped it to build up in tea plantations. Studies were made on the role of the regulating agents of the eggs and caterpillars of the pest and responses of caterpillars to different predator-like stimuli (predatory wasps, ants and birds) and mechanical vibrations. Eggs collected from the fields were reared in the laboratory to study egg parasitization and monitored in the field to study the role of natural predators. Prolonged drought and inconsistent rainfall influenced the range expansion of H. talaca. In tea plantations, female moths preferred to conceal the eggs in the scaly bark of shade trees. Excluding woodpeckers, H. talaca eggs were scarcely attacked by other natural enemies. The caterpillars dropped off the plant in response to potential predators and assumed a deimatic ‘U’ or ‘S’ shape, and remained motionless when stimulated by mechanical vibration. This study suggests that the lack of specialized natural enemies helped H. talaca to build up in the tea plantations of NE India in a short period of time.

Inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and random amplified DNA polymorphism (RAPD) markers were used to estimate the genetic diversity among 14 tropical silkworm races (Bombyx mori L.) for identifying potential parents to be used for hybrid preparation for commercial exploitation. High polymorphism (70.91 and 74.70%) was revealed by ISSR and RAPD markers. The dendrograms generated, using unweighted pair group method using arithmetic average from these markers, grouped the 14 silkworm races into two major groups, which corroborates the differences in cocoon characteristics. Discriminant function analysis of ISSR and RAPD markers identified three functions for cocoon weight and two functions for shell weights, respectively. Step-wise multiple regression analysis identified six ISSR markers (834500, 8841700, 8841850, 8271500, 8401500 and 7891250) and seven RAPD markers (834500, 885900, 8101400, 884900, 8361500, 7891250 and 7621700) significantly associated with cocoon and shell weights. The genetically divergent parents, identified through this study, can be used for the preparation of hybrids for commercial utilization. Similarly, the DNA markers identified can be utilized for marker-assisted selection along with those identified through quantitative trait locus mapping by others. Thus the information generated in this study is useful in silkworm breeding programmes in the tropical sericulture industry.

The resistance or susceptibility of sorghum genotypes to damage by the spotted stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) is commonly measured in terms of leaf damage, deadheart formation and stem tunnelling. Effect of the host plant on the insect survival and development (antibiosis) and the response of the plant to insect damage (tolerance or recovery resistance) are also important parameters for measuring host plant resistance to stemborers. We compared ten selection indices commonly used to select genotypes for tolerance/resistance to various stresses, namely functional plant loss index (FPLI), antibiosis index (ABI), mean productivity index (MPI), mean relative performance (MRP), relative efficiency index (REI), tolerance index (TOL), Fischer's and Maurer's stress susceptibility index (FMSSI), Fernandez stress tolerance index (FSTI), geometric mean productivity (GMP) and Schneider's stress severity index (SSSI). The results suggest that the indices based on grain yield reduction can be combined with those associated with grain yield response and potential under borer-infested and uninfested conditions, since each index assesses different biological mechanisms (such as tolerance, adaptation and/or productivity). Among these, FPLI can be used to differentiate the sorghum genotypes for different components of resistance by taking into account both foliar damage and deadheart formation. GMP, REI and FSTI provided a better discrimination of the stemborer-tolerant genotypes under borer-infested conditions, and were better predictors of grain yield performance than TOL, MPI, MRP, ABI, SSSI, FMSSI and FPLI. A strong association between GMP and REI indicated that both these indices could be used to select for low grain yield loss and high productivity. However, the selection of genotypes with high grain yield potential and adaptation to borer infestation may be achieved by combining selection indices related to the mean grain yield performance under borer-infested and uninfested conditions (GMP and REI), and low levels of grain yield loss under borer infestation.

Continuous breeding efforts in Ethiopia resulted in the release of 15 improved chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) varieties with improved yield, seed quality, disease resistance and better adaptation to different production zones within Ethiopia. This study was conducted to examine whether breeding for increased yield and other important agronomic traits without direct selection for resistance to the adzuki bean beetle (Callosobruchus chinensis L.) has inadvertently resulted in a significant level of susceptibility to this seed pest within the new cultivars. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to see whether breeding for better seed quality has increased susceptibility to infestation by the adzuki bean beetle. Seeds of 130 accessions/genotypes were infested with the beetle in 2009 under ambient temperature and relative humidity at Holetta, Ambo and Debre Zeit, Ethiopia. Data were recorded on attributes of infestation level and seed damage. Data on seed size, proportion of seed coat and grain yield were collected from a replicated field trial conducted with the same accessions/genotypes grown under the same conditions in 2009/10 at Ginchi and Ambo, Ethiopia. Differences among the genotypes were significant for most traits with the exception of the number of uninfested seeds. Accessions with partial resistance include 41320, 41289, 41291, 41134, 41315, 207658, 41103, 41168, 41142, 41174, 41029, 41207, 209087, 231327, 41161 and 41008. The improved varieties were more susceptible than germplasm accessions. The results indicate that genetic progress was achieved both in grain yield and seed size, but breeding efforts for these traits had also inadvertently increased seed susceptibility to C. chinensis. Improvements in seed size resulted in higher infestation levels and seed damage. Future breeding to improve seed quality should simultaneously consider corrective measures to incorporate resistance to the adzuki bean beetle.
