Attached (Suppl Mat 1) is the list of colleagues across the world that have very kindly refereed papers submitted to the journal and thereby assisted the editors in determining which papers should be accepted for publication. Some have refereed several papers for us in the course of the year. Peer review remains the principal process whereby submissions are evaluated and is dependent on already very busy people giving freely of their time. Referees do so in the knowledge that their own papers go through the same process involving other referees and this remains, in a roundabout way, one payback for their efforts. Authors frequently tell us that they appreciate the improvements the review process makes to their manuscripts. We pass on the thanks where the authors specifically ask us to do so. We always appreciate your work for us very much and thank you on behalf of the journal and the authors.
Many of our referees publish in the journal and their papers of course go through the same rigorous peer review process! We currently reject about 60% of submissions which, for the record, included one of my group's papers, just to demonstrate our processes permit no privileges to the editors: our paper was published in another journal. If in the process of assisting us you have any comments on any aspect of the journal we would be pleased to receive them. I take the opportunity of reminding you that we are always looking for timely well written Review articles for the journal and if you have an idea for a Review article written by you or one of your colleagues I would be very pleased to hear from you. Reviews are refereed as all other papers.
