Recently, the properties of ESSs for random payoff matrices, and stable polymorphisms for random fitness matrices, have been investigated. These problems are very closely related, and some similarities and differences are examined here. In contrast to some earlier work, non-robustness of the conclusions, to changes in the distribution of the random matrices, are found in two areas: in the asymptotic number of polymorphisms (or ESSs) whose support is a given size, and in the location of a polymorphism (or ESS) whose size of support is 2 or 3, in a large matrix.

In this paper we provide two basic results. First, we find the set of all the limiting vectors of expectations, variances and covariances in an NHMS which are possible provided that we control the limit vector of the sequence of vectors of input probabilities. Secondly, under certain conditions easily met in practice we find the distribution of the limiting vector of expectations, variances and covariances to be multinomial with probabilities the corresponding limiting expected populations in the various states of the NHMS.

Nearest-neighbour Markov point processes were introduced by Baddeley and Møller (1989) as generalizations of the Markov point processes of Ripley and Kelly. This note formulates and discusses a spatial Markov property for these point processes.

An ergodic L2-theorem for inhomogeneous Markov chains covering simulated annealing with or without constraints and stochastic relaxation with or without constraints arising in Bayesian image reconstruction is proved. The derivation is self-contained.

We consider the equivalence of state probabilities of a general stationary process at an arbitrary time and at embedded epochs of a given point process, which is called ASTA (Arrivals See Time Averages). By using an event-conditonal intensity, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for ASTA for a large class of state sets, which determines a state distribution. We do not need any additional assumptions except that the general process has left-hand limits at all points of time. Especially, for a stationary pure-jump process with a point process, ASTA is obtained for all state sets. As an application of those results, Anti-PASTA is obtained for a pure-jump Markov process and a certain class of GSMP (Generalized Semi-Markov Processes), where Anti-PASTA means that ASTA implies that the arrival process is Poisson.

This paper is concerned with the rate of convergence of certain functionals associated with a stochastic process arising in the modelling of soil erosion. Some limit theorems are derived for the total crop production Sn over a number n of years, and the rate of convergence of Sn to its limit S is discussed. Some stability assumptions are considered, and particular stable geometric infinitely divisible processes analyzed.

In the standard job search problem a single decision-maker (say an employer) has to choose from a sequence of candidates of varying fitness. We extend this formulation to allow both employers and candidates to make choices. We consider an infinite population of employers and an infinite population of candidates. Each employer interviews a (possibly infinite) sequence of candidates for a post and has the choice of whether or not to offer a candidate the post. Each candidate is interviewed by a (possibly infinite) sequence of employers and can accept or reject each offer. Each employer seeks to maximise the fitness of the candidate appointed and each candidate seeks to maximise the fitness of their eventual employer. We allow both discounting and/or a cost per interview. We find that there is a unique pair of policies (for employers and candidates respectively) which is in Nash equilibrium. Under these policies each population is partitioned into a finite or countable sequence of subpopulations, such that an employer (candidate) in a given subpopulation ends up matched with the first candidate (employer) encountered from the corresponding subpopulation. In some cases the number of non-empty subpopulations in the two populations will differ and some members of one population will never be matched.

Optimal stopping of a sequence of random variables is studied, with emphasis on generalized objectives which may be non-monotone functions of EXt, where t is a stopping time, or may even depend on the entire vector (E[X1I{t=l}], · ··, E[XnI{t=n}]), such as the minimax objective to maximize minj{E[XjI{t=j}]}. Convexity is used to establish a prophet inequality and universal bounds for the optimal return, and a method for constructing optimal stopping times for such objectives is given.

Two friends have become separated in a building or shopping mall and and wish to meet as quickly as possible. There are n possible locations where they might meet. However, the locations are identical and there has been no prior agreement where to meet or how to search. Hence they must use identical strategies and must treat all locations in a symmetrical fashion. Suppose their search proceeds in discrete time. Since they wish to avoid the possibility of never meeting, they will wish to use some randomizing strategy. If each person searches one of the n locations at random at each step, then rendezvous will require n steps on average. It is possible to do better than this: although the optimal strategy is difficult to characterize for general n, there is a strategy with an expected time until rendezvous of less than 0.829 n for large enough n. For n = 2 and 3 the optimal strategy can be established and on average 2 and 8/3 steps are required respectively. There are many tantalizing variations on this problem, which we discuss with some conjectures.

A number of multi-priority jobs are to be processed on two heterogeneous processors. Of the jobs waiting in the buffer, jobs with the highest priority have the first option of being dispatched for processing when a processor becomes available. On each processor, the processing times of the jobs within each priority class are stochastic, but have known distributions with decreasing mean residual (remaining) processing times. Processors are heterogeneous in the sense that, for each priority class, one has a lesser average processing time than the other. It is shown that the non-preemptive scheduling strategy for each priority class to minimize its expected flowtime is of threshold type. For each class, the threshold values, which specify when the slower processor is utilized, may be readily computed. It is also shown that the social and the individual optimality coincide.

Given a coherent system, let Z be the age of the machine at breakdown, and I the set of parts failed by time Z. Assume that the component lifetimes are independent. Assume further that the lifetime distributions are mutually absolutely continuous and that each possesses a single positive atom at the common essential infimum. We prove that the joint distribution of (Z, I) identifies the lifetime distribution of each part if and only if there is at most one component belonging to all cut sets. If we relax the mutual absolute continuity assumption by allowing isolated intervals of constancy, then a necessary and sufficient condition for identifiability is that no two parts be in parallel.

We consider two models for the reliability of a series system of components with spares, serviced by a single service facility. Replacement of failed components by a spare has pre-emptive priority over repair of the failed components; the models differ in whether interrupted repairs resume from where they left off, or restart from the beginning. We find the availability of such systems: numerical results indicate that this is insensitive to the shape of the repair-time and replacement-time distributions. We also obtain the distribution of system downtime for these models.

Zuckermann [10] considers the problem of optimal control of a finite dam using policies, assuming that the input process is Wiener with drift term μ ≧ 0. Lam Yeh and Lou Jiann Hua [7] treat the case where the input is a Wiener process with a reflecting boundary at zero, with drift term μ ≧ 0, using the long-run average cost and total discounted cost criteria. Attia [1] obtains results similar to those of Lam Yeh and Lou Jiann Hua for the long-run average case and extends them to include μ < 0. In this paper we look further into the results of Zuckerman [10], simplify some of the work of Attia [1], [2], offering corrections to some of his formulae and extend the results of Lam Yeh and Lou Jiann Hua [7].

Consider the GI/G/1 queue in which the interarrival/service times are parameterized. The derivatives (with respect to the parameter) of the expected delay of the nth job and its limit are derived and expressed in terms of the expectation of certain stochastic derivatives. Applications of these derivatives in stochastic optimization and random walk are illustrated.

The coupling method of Ball (1986) is extended to carrier-borne epidemics, thus providing a new proof of a result of Daniels (1972) concerning the total size distribution of Downton's stochastic carrier-borne epidemic. The generalization to multipopulation carrier-borne epidemics is immediate.

In the paper a probabilistic coupling between the M/G/1 processor sharing queue and the M/M/1 feedback queue, with general feedback probabilities, is established. This coupling is then used to prove the almost sure convergence of sojourn times in the feedback model to sojourn times in the M/G/1 processor sharing queue. Using the theory of regenerative processes it follows that for stable queues the stationary distribution of the sojourn time in the feedback model converges in law to the corresponding distribution in the processor sharing model. The results do not depend on Poisson arrival times, but are also valid for general arrival processes.
