A surface-roller wiper that rotates by direct contact with the ground was developed to apply herbicides to broadleaf weeds in turf. The free-wheeling roller 1.8 m wide consists of a 30-cm diam PVC pipe covered with a 1.3-cm thick carpet The herbicide is delivered by gravity to the carpet through a pipe manifold. Broadleaf weeds in turf were effectively controlled with 2,4-D roller applied once as a 2% solution (2.2 kg ae/ha) or twice as a 1% solution (1.1 kg/ha). Herbicide drift was avoided with the roller applicator as indicated by lack of injury to tomato plants downwind from 2,4-D roller applied as a 5% (5.6 kg/ha) solution.

Field trials were conducted in Georgia in 2007 to 2008 to evaluate the tolerance of three imidazolinone-resistant sunflower cultivars to POST applications of imazapic. There was no interaction between sunflower cultivar and herbicide treatment. When averaged over sunflower cultivars, imazapic, at 70 and 140 g ai/ha and applied at 30 d after planting, had no effect on sunflower above-ground biomass, plant height, seed-heads per meter row, and seed-head weights. Sunflower response to imazapic was similar to that of imazamox. Imazapic could be used in imidazolinone-resistant sunflower production systems without risk of unacceptable crop injury.

Field trials were conducted to evaluate weed control and crop safety with postemergence-applied herbicides in two cultivars of low-tannin seedling sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata). Two applications of either 2,4-D amine at 0.28 kg ae/ha or 2,4-DB amine at 0.56 kg ae/ha controlled sicklepod (Senna obtusifolia) ≥ 90%. Equivalent control of smallflower morningglory (Jacquemontia tamnifolia) required either two applications of 2,4-D or three of 2,4-DB. Three applications of either herbicide were required for comparable spotted spurge (Euphorbia maculata) control. Sericea lespedeza was not adversely affected when either herbicide was applied up to three times per season over two consecutive seasons. Tolerance to 2,4-D and 2,4-DB was equal between two sericea lespedeza cultivars. Absorption of foliar-applied 14C-2,4-D was greater in sicklepod and smallflower morningglory than in sericea lespedeza. Translocation of absorbed 14C-2,4-D was equivalent between sicklepod and sericea lespedeza but greater in smallflower morningglory than in sericea lespedeza. Absorption and translocation of foliar-applied 14C-2,4-DB was equivalent between sicklepod and sericea lespedeza. Furthermore, 14C-2,4-DB absorption was less in smallflower morningglory than in sericea lespedeza.

Believed native to the Mediterranean region, dwarf snapdragon [Chaenorrhinum minus (L.) Lange ♯ CHNMI] was introduced into North America in the late 19th century. Since its introduction, it has spread, mainly along railroad lines, to at least 30 states as far west as Kansas and Nebraska. Increased use of herbicides by railroad companies has resulted in a marked decrease in its abundance in recent years.

Lima bean cultivar ‘Improved Kingston’ was evaluated for sensitivity to herbicide treatments in a field experiment, conducted from 1999 to 2001 in Ontario. Crop was evaluated for visual injury at 7, 14, and 28 d after emergence following preemergence (PRE) applications of metolachlor (1,600 and 3,200 g ai/ha) and imazethapyr (75 and 150 g ai/ha). Crop visual injury to postemergence (POST) applications of imazamox + fomesafen (25 + 200 g ai/ha and 50 + 400 g ai/ha) and quizalopfop-P (72 and 144 g ai/ha) was evaluated at 7, 14, and 28 d after treatment. Plant height and crop yield were also assessed. The imazamox + fomesafen mixture caused significant visual injury and tended to decrease lima bean height and yield. Despite some initial injury observed in the metolachlor, imazethapyr, and quizalofop-P treatments, yield was not significantly decreased. Because of their margin of crop safety, metolachlor applied PRE at 1,600 g/ha, imazethapyr applied PRE at 75 g/ha, and quizalofop-P applied POST at 72 g/ha have excellent potential as weed management tools in Ontario lima bean production.

Chemical weed control with acrolein has been shown to be a lower cost method for reducing submerged plant biomass of sago pondweed in the irrigation district of the Lower Valley of Rio Colorado, Argentina (39°10′S–62°05′W). However, no experimental data exist on the effects of the herbicide on plant growth and its survival structures. Field experiments were conducted during 3 yr to evaluate the effect of acrolein on growth and biomass of sago pondweed and on the source of underground propagules (i.e., rhizomes, tubers, and seeds). Plant biomass samples were collected in irrigation channels before and after several herbicide treatments. The underground propagule bank was evaluated at the end of the third year. Within each treatment, plant biomass was significantly reduced by 40 to 60% in all three study years. Rapid new plant growth occurred after each application; however, it was less vigorous after repeated treatments. At the end of the third year at 3,000 m downstream from the application point, plant biomass at both channels ranged from 34 to 3% of control values. Individual plant weight and height were affected by acrolein treatments, flowering was poor, and seeds did not reach maturity. After 3 yr, acrolein did not reduce the number of tubers. However, they were significantly smaller and lighter. Rhizomes fresh weight decreased by 92%, and seed numbers decreased by 79%. After 3 yr of applications, operational functioning of the channels could be maintained with fewer treatments and lower concentrations of acrolein.

The influence of incorporation vs no incorporation on the efficacy of granular triallate applied in mid-October at 1400 and 1700 g ai/ha to control wild oat was evaluated in spring wheat in west central Saskatchewan over a 7-yr period. All fall-applied triallate reduced wild oat panicles and fresh weight, and increased yield compared to untreated checks. With applications in standing wheat stubble there was no difference in wild oat control from incorporation versus no incorporation. All triallate treatments reduced wild oat panicles and fresh weight by over 95%, and resulted in wheat yield increases ranging from 29 to 67%. In tilled fallow, incorporated granules provided better wild oat control than when there was no incorporation. Wheat yield increases ranged from 50 to 85% for triallate treatments with yield for incorporated triallate approximately 15% greater than non-incorporated. The rate of triallate did not affect the level of wild oat control achieved with either incorporation method. In separate tolerance studies triallate incorporation method did not affect spring wheat emergence or subsequent development.

Swamp dodder continues to spread through Wisconsin carrots, reducing crop yield and quality. Greenhouse research was conducted to evaluate the effect of swamp dodder infection timing on carrot development and to evaluate carrot cultivar tolerance to the parasite. Data collection included measurement of carrot processing qualities such as root length, root diameter, and fresh weight, as well as quantification of carrot leaf biomass and swamp dodder biomass. Carrot processing qualities were reduced the most in carrots infected 14 d after emergence (DAE). Carrots infected 70 DAE were similar to the noninfected carrots for all processing qualities. Carrot cultivars differed in tolerance of swamp dodder parasitism. All parameters for cultivar tolerance were significantly reduced by swamp dodder infection; however, ‘Enterprise’, ‘Sweet Bites’, ‘Sugar Snax 54’, ‘Topcut 93’, and ‘Mokum’ were most tolerant of parasitism and exhibited minimal reductions in root length, diameter, and fresh weight compared with other cultivars. ‘7626B’, ‘Bolero’, ‘Legend’, and ‘Imperial Cuts’ cultivars grew poorly when parasitized.

When solid stands of foxtail millet are cut for swath grazing, the grazing season for cattle is extended and winter feeding costs reduced. The economic success of this practice depends on inexpensive weed control. Eight single- and double-rate herbicide combinations (g ai/ha) were evaluated and compared to a weed-free check: MCPA + bromoxynil (280 + 280 or 560 + 560); MCPA + clopyralid (560 + 100 or 1120 + 200); MCPA + fluroxypyr (562 + 108 or 1124 + 216); and MCPA + clopyralid + fluroxypyr (560 + 100 + 144 or 1120 + 200 + 288). This study was conducted at Indian Head, Saskatchewan (SK) in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 and at Scott, SK, in 2006 and 2007. Crop injury and dry matter yield were measured. Results of the study indicate that crop injury exceeded 20% at only one out of six sites at 7 to 14 d after herbicide treatment. Double-rate MCPA + bromoxynil treatments had higher injury ratings than the weed-free check 7 to 14 d after treatment in all site years. As the growing season progressed, injury ratings tended to decline except at Scott in 2007, where injury ratings at the 21 to 35 d period were numerically greater than the other two rating periods. There were no differences among treatments for crop biomass production. We conclude that all four herbicide combinations at the labeled rate are safe to use on foxtail millet in Saskatchewan, and probably in other areas with similar environmental growing conditions.

Experiments were conducted at Bridgeport, NE, during 1983 through 1987 to select alternatives for silvex and 2,4,5-T for sand sagebrush and brittle pricklypear control. Of the six herbicides examined, the butoxyethyl ester of 2,4-D at 2.2 kg ae/ha was equivalent to the propylene glycol butyl ether ester of silvex or 2,4,5-T for sand sagebrush control. The potassium salt of picloram at 0.3 kg ae/ha was equal to silvex for brittle pricklypear control.

Crop-herbicide systems for johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] control were compared in a 5-yr study at two locations in central Ohio. Monocultures of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] were compared with a 3-yr rotation of corn, soybeans, and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Johnsongrass was controlled most effectively (over 95%) when glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine] was applied to emerged johnsongrass, followed by moldboard plowing, preplant incorporated (PPI) application of trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine], then soybean planting (MS-G-T). The second best control was in corn (over 90%) treated PPI with EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylcarbamothioate) in the rotation (RC-E). Johnsongrass control was least in monocultured corn treated PPI with EPTC (MC-E) and in monocultured soybeans treated PPI with trifluralin (MS-T).

Field studies were conducted in 2007 and 2008 near Lubbock and Lamesa, TX, to determine the effects of propazine alone and in combination with glyphosate applied PRE and POST on cotton growth, yield, and lint value (fiber quality). Propazine at 0.56, 0.84, and 1.12 kg ai ha−1 and in combination with glyphosate at 0.86 kg ae ha−1 was applied PRE, early POST, and mid-POST. Up to 11% injury was observed after propazine applied early POST and mid-POST at Lubbock in 1 of 2 yr, and up to 13% at all three application timings was observed at Lamesa in 1 of 2 yr. The greatest injury was observed 58 d after application following propazine at 1.12 kg ai ha−1 applied PRE; however, no injury was apparent 80 d after application. Cotton yield, lint values, and gross revenues were not affected by any treatment.

Nettles belong to the genus Urtica, in the Urticaceae, which includes about 30 species of herbs, shrubs, and trees of world-wide distribution (3, 12). These species have recognizable similarities but vary considerably in height - from 0.3 to 0.66 m to 2.6 or 3 m tall (15). Nettles have a peculiar notoriety. As the 17th century herbalist Nicholas Culpeper (5) wrote, “Nettles are so well known, that they need no description, they may be found by feeling for them in the darkest night.”

Fluridone has been used to successfully manage Eurasian watermilfoil since the late 1980s. However, recent documentation of hybrid watermilfoils and the resulting potential for reduced herbicide sensitivity necessitate the need for an assay to determine individual population response to fluridone. A known fluridone-resistant hybrid watermilfoil population from Townline Lake in Michigan was compared to 11 Eurasian and hybrid watermilfoil populations in laboratory experiments to develop a method for determining response to fluridone. Apical shoot tips were exposed to increasing concentrations of fluridone (0 to 48 μg L−1) for 3, 5, and 7 d. Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was evaluated using a pulse-amplitude modulated fluorometer at each interval along with pigment analysis of chlorophyll and β-carotene at the 7-d interval. Fv/Fm and pigment analysis yielded the same results. A fluridone concentration of 12 μg L−1 and an analysis interval of 7 d were found to be optimal in determining invasive watermilfoil response to fluridone. Use of such small-scale assays can provide resource managers a rapid tool to cost-effectively evaluate invasive watermilfoil response to fluridone.

Yellow and purple nutsedge are common in the southeastern United States, and both perennial species are difficult to control in organic crop-production systems. Tubers are generally confined to the upper portions of the soil profile and are vulnerable to desiccation when brought to the soil surface. A peanut digger is a common implement found in the coastal plain region of the southeastern United States and has shown promise controlling perennial nutsedges in fallow sites. The peanut digger undercuts perennial nutsedges, deposits weeds on the soil surface, and exposes weeds to desiccation. However, rainfall after tillage with the peanut digger allows displaced nutsedges to survive. As part of a senior-level class project, undergraduate mechanical engineering students from Auburn University designed and constructed a cart attached to a peanut digger that collected nutsedges. Key features included a custom hitch that allowed the correct plane of movement and a hydraulic conveyor system that discarded the perennial nutsedges off-site, away from the field. The prototype was tested in a fallow location in the summer of 2014 with a yellow nutsedge infestation averaging 148 plants m−2. One week after the initial field test, tillage using the peanut digger with specialized cart reduced yellow nutsedge densities in the tilled area by > 99%.

This research examined a potential nuisance aspect of the use of the volatility-reducing agent (VRA) potassium carbonate when combined with glyphosate in spray-tank mixtures. A VRA is now required to be added to dicamba applications to reduce off-target movement from volatility. When no VRA potassium carbonate was added to the spray mixture, there was no pressure buildup. The addition of VRA potassium carbonate plus glyphosate (which lowers the pH) resulted in an observed pressure buildup. Although the gas produced was not identified, it would be expected to be carbon dioxide formed by the dissolution of the carbonate anion from the VRA. Source water pH range from 3.2 to 8.2 had no effect on pressure buildup. Pressure buildup was directly related to water temperature, with a linear response to temperature when the VRA was added last; in contrast, a less direct relationship of temperature to pressure buildup existed at temperatures >30 C when the VRA potassium carbonate was added first. There was no effect on the pressure increase from adding a defoamer or a drift control agent.

Overreliance on herbicides for weed control has led to the evolution of herbicide-resistant Palmer amaranth populations. Farm managers should consider the long-term consequences of their short-term management decisions, especially when considering the soil weed seedbank. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine how soybean population and POST herbicide application timing affects in-season Palmer amaranth control and soybean yield, and (2) how those variables influence Palmer amaranth densities and cotton yields the following season. Soybeans were planted (19-cm row spacing) at a low-, medium-, and high-density population (268,000, 546,000, and 778,000 plants ha–1, respectively). Fomesafen and clethodim (280 and 210 g ai ha–1, respectively) were applied at the VE, V1, or V2 to V3 soybean growth stage. Nontreated plots were also included to assess the effect of soybean population alone. The following season, cotton was planted into these plots so as to understand the effects of soybean planting population on Palmer amaranth densities in the subsequent crop. When an herbicide application occurred at the V1 or V2 to V3 soybean stage, weed control in the high-density soybean population increased 17% to 23% compared to the low-density population. Economic return was not influenced by soybean population and was increased 72% to 94% with herbicide application compared to no treatment. In the subsequent cotton crop, Palmer amaranth densities were 24% to 39% lower 3 wk after planting when following soybean sprayed with herbicides compared to soybean without herbicides. Additionally, Palmer amaranth densities in cotton were 19% lower when soybean was treated at the VE stage compared to later stages. Thus, increasing soybean population can improve Palmer amaranth control without adversely affecting economic returns and can reduce future weed densities. Reducing the weed seedbank and selection pressure from herbicides are critical in mitigating resistance evolution.

Rush skeletonweed is an invasive weed in winter wheat (WW)/summer fallow (SF) rotations in the low to intermediate rainfall areas of the inland Pacific Northwest. Standard weed control practices are not effective, resulting in additional SF tillage or herbicide applications. The objective of this field research was to identify herbicide treatments that control rush skeletonweed during the SF phase of the WW/SF rotation. Trials were conducted near LaCrosse, WA, in 2017–2019 and 2018–2020, and near Hay, WA, in 2018–2020. The LaCrosse 2017–2019 trial was in tilled SF; the other two trials were in no-till SF. Fall postharvest applications in October included clopyralid, clopyralid plus 2,4-D, clopyralid plus 2,4-D plus chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron, aminopyralid, picloram, and glyphosate plus 2,4-D. Spring treatments of clopyralid, aminopyralid, and glyphosate were applied to rush skeletonweed rosettes. Summer treatments of 2,4-D were applied when rush skeletonweed initiated bolting. Plant density was monitored through the SF phase in all plots. Picloram provided complete control of rush skeletonweed through June at all three locations. Fall-applied clopyralid, clopyralid plus 2,4-D, and clopyralid followed by 2,4-D in summer reduced rush skeletonweed through June at the two LaCrosse sites but were ineffective at Hay. In August, just prior to WW seeding, the greatest reductions in rush skeletonweed density were achieved with picloram and fall-applied clopyralid at the two LaCrosse sites. No treatments provided effective control into August at Hay. Wheat yield in the next crop compared to the nontreated control was reduced only at one LaCrosse site by a spring-applied aminopyralid treatment, otherwise no other reductions were found. Long-term control of rush skeletonweed in WW/SF may be achieved by a combination of fall application of picloram, after wheat harvest, followed by an effective burn-down treatment in August prior to WW seeding.

Eucalyptus species are grown for fiber, fuel, and other uses on more than 17.8 million ha worldwide, yet some species are considered invasive and may have adverse environmental or social impacts outside their native range. Aminocyclopyrachlor (AMCP) and standard applications of imazapyr and triclopyr herbicides were compared for eucalyptus control using a basal stem application method. At 6 and 12 mo after treatment (MAT), basal stem applications using 5% (vol/vol) AMCP (120 g ae L−1) in methylated soybean oil (MSO) resulted in 97% to 99% eucalyptus crown reduction and generally provided greater control across all diameter classes than standard treatments of 28% imazapyr (240 g ae L−1) or 75% triclopyr ester (480 g ae L−1). AMCP at 5% was as effective as 40% vol/vol. Increases in stem live height at 24 MAT suggest that the effect of triclopyr ester basal stem treatment may be impermanent. AMCP treated trees did not have regrowth by 24 MAT.
