Fluazifop-P, applied in the spring or fall and pronamide, applied in the fall only, reduced quackgrass infestation in established alfalfa and increased the dry matter yield of alfalfa. Herbicides did not improve alfalfa in vitro digestibility or crude protein content. Average residues of fluazifop-P in alfalfa treated with rates of 0.25 or 0.5 kg ai ha–1, were 0.1 mg kg–1 when harvested 280 d after application, and 0.06 mg kg–1 when harvested 295 d after application. Average residues in alfalfa harvested 41 and 55 d after application were 0.13 mg kg–1 and 0.1 mg kg–1, respectively, with a 0.25 kg ha–1 treatment and 0.19 mg kg–1 and 0.05 mg kg–1, respectively, with a 0.5 kg ha–1 treatment.

Weeds represent one of the most important biotic threats to agricultural plant health, and the potential global impact of weeds on crop yields is similar to that of all other pests (animal pests and pathogens) combined. Canola is the most-grown crop in Canada based on seeded area and generates on average Can$29.9 billion in economic activity each year. The objective of this report, sponsored by the Weed Science Society of America Weed Loss Committee, was to provide an updated estimate of potential yield and monetary losses due to weed interference in spring canola grown in Canada and the United States. Quantitative yield data from field experiments were provided by researchers and weed science professionals in the northern Great Plains region; the major canola-producing area of North America. Overall, 89 yield loss estimates were compiled, covering the 18-yr period from 2003 to 2020. Average canola yield losses due to weed interference in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and North Dakota were 35%, 30%, 18%, and 28%, respectively. Potential yield losses weighted by canola harvested area averaged 30%, 28%, and 30% for Canada, the United States, and both countries combined, respectively. Therefore, unfettered weed interference in spring canola represents a potential monetary loss of Can$2.21 billion, $0.16 billion, and $2.37 billion for farmers in Canada, the United States, and both countries combined. The realization of such losses could manifest through continued selection for herbicide-resistant weeds, indicating the critical need for canola farmers to diversify resistance selection pressures by implementing proactive integrated weed management programs.

Field trials were conducted in 2003/2004 and 2005/2006 at Reidsville, Georgia, to evaluate the effects of previously applied residual herbicides on onion growth and bulb production. Before transplanting onion, preplant applications of imazapic at 18 and 36 g ai/ha, diclosulam at 7 and 14 g ai/ha, pyrithiobac at 27 and 54 g ai/ha, trifloxysulfuron at 6.6 and 13.2 g ai/ha, diuron at 224 and 448 g ai/ha, and cloransulam at 22 g ai/ha were made. An untreated control was included for comparison. Trifloxysulfuron at 13.2 g/ha, diclosulam at 14 g/ha, pyrithiobac at 54 g/ha, and cloransulam at 22 g/ha injured onion 26, 73, 86, and 86% in 2003/2004, respectively, and 13 to 44% injury in 2005/2006. These same herbicides also reduced yield. Imazapic and diuron injured transplanted onion 6% during both seasons but did not reduce yield. This research suggests imazapic and diuron restrictions could possibly be reduced. However, the onion rotational restrictions for diclosulam, pyrithiobac, trifloxysulfuron, and cloransulam are accurate.

Field violet is a winter or summer annual plant that is a serious weed of canola crops in Europe. It is a weed of increasing concern within reduced tillage fields in central Alberta, where its response to registered herbicides has not been evaluated. Two commercial fields within the Aspen Parkland ecoregion of Alberta were used to evaluate the efficacy of postemergence (POST) herbicides against field violet in conventional, imidazolinone-resistant (IMI-resistant) and glufosinate-resistant canola cultivars, as well as to evaluate the plant's response to various timings and rates of glyphosate in glyphosate-resistant canola. Control of field violet was lower in field experiments conducted in 2002 compared with 2003, probably because of abnormally low rainfall in 2002. The POST herbicides evaluated provided inadequate control of field violet in conventional canola. Glufosinate control at 500 g ai/ha was unacceptable unless the crop canopy closed shortly after application. In IMI-resistant canola, thifensulfuron did not significantly reduce plant density and biomass under the extremely dry conditions experienced in 2002, but in 2003, it conferred respective reductions of 79 and 86% relative to nontreated controls. Imazamox plus imazethapyr did not affect plant growth. Field violet was controlled by pre- and postcrop emergence glyphosate at 445 g ae/ha. Postharvest application of glyphosate provided good control throughout the following growing season when spring emergence was minimal. Herbicide activity was also evaluated on two- to four-leaf seedlings in a greenhouse experiment. Dose– response curves reflected the activity observed in field experiments. Strategies for effective field violet control with herbicides are dependent on cultivar selection and the management system, but are improved by timing application to young, actively growing plants.

Field experiments were conducted at two locations in Virginia to evaluate the following herbicides: alachlor, diphenamid, diuron, metolachlor, napropamide, norflurazon, oryzalin, oxyfluorfen, paraquat, pendimethalin, and simazine. One experiment involved newly-transplanted apple trees; the others, three in apple and one in peach trees, involved one-year-old trees. Treatments were applied in the spring (mid-April to early-May). Control of annual weed species was excellent with several treatments. A broader spectrum of weeds was controlled in several instances when the preemergence herbicides were used in combinations. Perennial species, particularly broadleaf species and johnsongrass, were released when annual species were suppressed by the herbicides. A rye cover crop in nontreated plots suppressed the growth of weeds. New shoot growth of newly-transplanted apple trees was increased with 3 of 20 herbicide treatments and scion circumference was increased with 11 of 20 herbicide treatments compared to the nontreated control. Growth of one-year-old apple trees was not affected. Scion circumference of one-year-old peach trees was increased with 25 of 33 herbicide treatments.

Experiments were conducted in 1995, 1996, and 1999 to evaluate clomazone preemergence in flue-cured tobacco seedbeds. The seedbeds were fumigated with methyl bromide to kill all the weeds and other pests, and then the subplots designated as grassy were sown with a mixture of equal mass of crowfootgrass, goosegrass, and rhodesgrass. Clomazone rates were 0, 0.14, 0.28, 0.42, and 0.56 kg ai/ha for 1995 and 0, 0.42, 0.47, 0.52, and 0.94 kg ai/ha for 1996 and 1999. The rates of clomazone in 1996 and 1999 were based on the 1995 results where 0.42 kg/ha decreased the dry mass of grasses by 98% compared with the nontreated control, while clomazone at 0.28 kg/ha decreased the dry mass of grasses by 75%, and this was not considered adequate. In 1995, 0.56 kg clomazone/ha decreased the tobacco seedling number but had no effect on the growth of tobacco plants. In 1996 and 1999 clomazone had no effect on the number or dry mass of tobacco seedlings despite causing slight discoloration 4 wk after sowing at all rates in 1996. This discoloration had disappeared by transplanting time. The effect of grass competition on the emergence and growth of tobacco was severe in the nontreated subplots. More grasses emerged in 1999 than in 1996, possibly due to higher temperatures; however, few grasses survived until transplanting time in clomazone-treated areas. All the clomazone rates tested in 1996 and 1999 were satisfactory as there was no crop injury or detrimental effect of the grasses on tobacco in the clomazone-treated grassy subplots. Therefore, the 0.42-kg clomazone/ha rate is considered optimal.

Glyphosate-resistant corn was no-till planted into alfalfa that was in the early bud stage (UNCUT) or had been cut 3 to 4 d earlier and baled for hay (CUT). Alfalfa control and corn yield were measured in nontreated plots as well as plots treated with glyphosate alone or tank-mixed with 2,4-D or dicamba applied at planting (AP) or POST. Alfalfa control was greater for all AP treatments of UNCUT compared to CUT alfalfa. Glyphosate plus dicamba applied AP controlled alfalfa better than the other AP treatments resulting in increased corn yield compared with other AP treatments. Postemergence applications of glyphosate alone or tank-mixed with 2,4-D or dicamba controlled alfalfa better 6 weeks after treatment than AP applications of the same herbicides; however, corn yield for AP treatments were similar or greater than the yield of POST applications of the same herbicides. Corn yield averaged 13% higher following herbicide applications to UNCUT compared with CUT alfalfa, so the value of alfalfa hay must be weighed against the loss of corn yield when making decisions concerning the management of an alfalfa–corn rotation.

Hemp sesbania control by chlorimuron applied with crop oil concentrate at 1.0% v/v, BCH 815 at 1.0% v/v, methylated seed oil at 1.0% v/v, a blend of methylated seed oil and organosilicone surfactant at 0.5% v/v, organosilicone-based surfactant at 0.125% v/v, and nonionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v was evaluated in field studies in 1994 and 1995. Control by chlorimuron at 4.5 g ae/ha was greater when applied with BCH 815, organosilicone-based surfactant, and nonionic surfactant than with crop oil concentrate, methylated seed oil, and a blend of methylated seed oil and organosilicone surfactant. When chlorimuron was applied at 4.5 g/ha with BCH 815 or nonionic surfactant, hemp sesbania control was similar to that by chlorimuron at 9 g/ha applied with methylated seed oil, the blend of methylated seed oil and organosilicone surfactant, or organosilicone-based surfactant.

A curved-linear Fresnel lens was investigated to test the effect of concentrated solar radiation on surface and buried weed seed. The lens produced a line focus 1 by 150 cm with a mean temperature of 309 C. A 20-s exposure to seed on the soil surface was 100% lethal to green foxtail, kochia, common lambsquarters, common purslane, and wild buckwheat. In a separate study, emergence from kochia and yellow foxtail seed was reduced 100% at 10 mm soil depth after 15 min in soil of 35 and 93 g/kg moisture and 20 to 40% at 178 g/kg moisture content. Concentrated solar radiation from a Fresnel lens has the greatest potential for affecting weed seed on the soil surface. A series of Fresnel lenses and/or larger lenses may be required for many practical field applications.

Farmers need information on herbicide technology and crop performance to assess the profitability of new herbicide-resistant crop technologies. First-generation imazethapyr-resistant corn hybrids evaluated at the University of Wisconsin yielded less than other commercial hybrids. To determine if this resistance trait affected yield or agronomic traits, 10 near-isogenic pairs of imazethapyr-resistant and -susceptible corn hybrids were compared. Whether treated with imazethapyr or not, imazethapyr-resistant hybrids yielded the same when averaged across hybrids, although yield varied among a few individual hybrids within single experiments. Seven of the imazethaypr-resistant hybrids yielded the same, two yield more, and one yielded less than their susceptible near-isogenic counterpart during eight site-years. Grain moisture was not affected, but imazethapyr-resistant hybrids had fewer broken stalks than did susceptible hybrids. The imazethapyr resistance trait does not appear to affect yield potential, but the backcrossing procedure may have caused early resistant hybrids to lag behind in yield compared to other new hybrids.

The U.S. Plant Introduction Collection for six pepper species (2694 accessions) was evaluated for tolerance to bentazon in a field study. Based on injury ratings, Capsicum annuum, C. chinense, and C. frutescens accessions were mostly intermediate in response to bentazon with relatively few highly tolerant or susceptible. Most of C. bacatum, C. chacoense, and C. pubescens and the unspeciated accessions were susceptible. Greenhouse experiments indicated that although most of the tolerant selections were highly tolerant, none was more tolerant than the C. annuum cultivars ‘Santaka’ or ‘Bohemian Chili’. None of the susceptible selections were more susceptible to bentazon than the C. annuum cultivar ‘Sweet Banana’. Individual plants that were highly tolerant were self-pollinated to produce progeny that were all highly bentazon tolerant, but none was more tolerant than Santaka or Bohemian Chili.

A rotary wiper was developed to apply herbicides selectively to weeds beneath horticultural crops such as fruit trees and ornamentals. Herbicide is delivered internally through a circular pipe manifold imbedded in a rotary polyurethane foam disk, thus avoiding herbicide drift. A free-wheeling bumper wheel, larger than the wiper disk, is mounted just above the disk causing it to move around a tree trunk or shrub on contact. The rotary wiper effectively applied herbicides to weeds within the row of fruit trees.

A greenhouse study was conducted to determine the effects of sublethal dicamba concentrations in the nutrient media on hydroponically grown tomato plants. Tomato leaf area was the most sensitive vegetative growth parameter measured in response to dicamba concentrations, ranging from 0 to 22 µg/L. Leaf area was reduced 31 and 76%, and specific leaf weights, a relative measure of leaf thickness (g/cm2), increased 26 and 121% after 30-d exposure to dicamba concentrations of 2.2 and 22 µg/L, respectively. In long-term experiments conducted until plants produced first ripe fruit, regression analysis indicated leaf area reductions of 8 and 66% from initial dicamba concentrations of 1 and 10 µg/L, respectively. Reductions in total fruit fresh weight were highly correlated (r = 0.93) with leaf area reductions caused by dicamba. A hyperbolic regression model gave predicted losses in fruit fresh weight per plant of 6% at 1 µg/L dicamba and 73% at 10 µg/L dicamba (r 2 = 0.87). Results generally indicated that the level of dicamba in the nutrient media of hydroponically grown tomatoes that produced no observable effect was ≤ 1 µg/L.

Producers are interested in tactics for managing crop residues when growing corn after spring wheat. We compared five systems of managing spring wheat residues: conventional tillage, no-till, strip-till, cover crop (hairy vetch) with no-till, and cover crop with strip-till following spring wheat. Conventional tillage consisted of chisel plowing and disking, whereas strip-till consisted of tilling a 15-cm band centered on corn rows, which were spaced 76 cm apart. Plots were split into weed-free and weed-infested subplots. Grain yield in weed-free conditions did not differ among treatments. However, weed-free yield was nearly 40% greater than weed-infested corn in conventional tillage. In contrast, weeds reduced yield only 15% with strip-till. Weed density and biomass was twofold greater with conventional tillage compared with the no-till and strip-till treatments. Weed seedlings also emerged earlier with conventional tillage. Increased weed tolerance with strip-till may be related to fertilizer placement. Corn growth and tolerance to weeds in no-till systems may be improved if a starter fertilizer is placed in the seed furrow.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of herbicides and soil sterilants for the fairway conversion of ‘Tifway’ bermudagrass to ‘Zorro’ zoysiagrass. Treatments included glyphosate (4.48 kg ae ha−1), EPTC (7.84 kg ai ha−1), dazomet (338 kg ai ha−1), siduron (13.4 kg ai ha−1), glyphosate plus ETPC (4.48 + 7.84 kg ha−1), glyphosate plus dazomet (4.48 + 338 kg ha−1), EPTC plus siduron (7.84 + 13.4 kg ha−1), and dazomet plus siduron (338 + 13.4 kg ha−1). Glyphosate treatments were applied 5 wk prior to establishment (WPE), dazomet and EPTC treatments were applied 3 WPE, and siduron was applied at establishment. Dazomet and EPTC treatments were incorporated to a depth of 10 to 15 cm with a rotary tiller and rolled with a weighted roller to reduce losses from volatilization after application. Zorro zoysiagrass was established in June 2008 and 2009 using a mixture of rhizomes and stolons at a rate of 76 cm3 m−2. Results indicate that glyphosate + dazomet, glyphosate + EPTC, dazomet + siduron, and EPTC + siduron were equally effective at controlling Tifway bermudagrass. EPTC and dazomet controlled bermudagrass more effectively when used in combination with glyphosate or siduron. There were no significant differences in bermudagrass cover between the EPTC combinations with glyphosate or siduron and dazomet applied with glyphosate or siduron. Comparing EPTC- and dazomet-alone, EPTC yielded less bermudagrass cover (32%) than dazomet (71%). At present, research is limited on using EPTC for controlling perennial grasses in turfgrass systems. Data from these studies demonstrate the potential use of EPTC as a preplant soil herbicide to control hybrid bermudagrass during zoysiagrass renovation.

Growers from three counties in Virginia have recently experienced difficulty controlling shattercane in corn with acetolactate synthase (ALS)–inhibiting herbicides. Seed was collected from these locations and from a susceptible biotype and tested for resistance to imazethapyr, imazapyr, and nicosulfuron in greenhouse trials. Seedlings from these locations were also treated with glufosinate and glyphosate. Greenhouse experiments indicated that one of the four shattercane biotypes was resistant to ALS-inhibiting herbicides. Effective control of the resistant biotype was possible with glufosinate or glyphosate. Field experiments were conducted in 2003 and 2004 to determine the most effective herbicide program utilizing herbicide-tolerant/-resistant corn hybrids for the control of shattercane. Early postemergence (EP) and late postemergence (LP) applications of imazethapyr plus imazapyr or EP nicosulfuron did not control shattercane, and yield from the imidazolinone-tolerant (IT) hybrid was equivalent between these treatments and was equivalent to yield from the weedy control (WC). At 23 wk after planting (WAP), EP applications of glyphosate controlled shattercane 71 and 75% compared to only 21 and 66% with EP applications of glufosinate in 2003 and 2004, respectively. In both years, LP applications of glufosinate or glyphosate controlled shattercane better than did EP applications of glufosinate or glyphosate. Treatment timing with respect to corn yield within either the glufosinate-resistant (LL) or glyphosate-resistant (RR) corn hybrid was critical. EP treatments of glufosinate or glyphosate resulted in yields that were equivalent to yield from the weed-free control (WFC) of each hybrid. LP treatments of glufosinate or glyphosate, however, resulted in yields that were equivalent to only 90 and 91% of yield from the WFC of each hybrid, respectively.

Field experiments were conducted during 1981 to 1984 to evaluate paraquat for weed control in alfalfa established for less than one year. Treatments were applied in March to alfalfa up to 4 cm tall and/or after cuttings to alfalfa up to 10 cm tall. Weeds were up to 20 cm tall. Paraquat applied in March controlled common chickweed and shepherd's-purse in some experiments. It did not control birdsrape mustard when applied after cuttings. Paraquat suppressed growth of perennial broadleaf weeds and grasses and reduced pressure from annual grasses in some experiments. March treatments generally did not increase, but sometimes decreased alfalfa yields. Paraquat applied after cuttings did not affect alfalfa yields in the majority of the experiments.

Weed scientists are facing research problems, such as invasive weeds, that may require multidisciplinary approaches to solve. One example is jointed goatgrass, a winter annual grass invading winter wheat fields and not easily managed with conventional control tactics. A national research program was started in 1994 to develop jointed goatgrass management strategies. Involving more than 35 scientists with diverse scientific expertise, this national approach fostered cooperative research projects across 11 states. Research involved entomology, economics, plant breeding, plant physiology, genetics, and weed science, leading to successful management systems for jointed goatgrass. To help other scientists organize regional or national programs, we describe development and performance of the jointed goatgrass program as well as suggest ideas for possible improvement. Pivotal to the success of the program was a Steering Committee, whose role was to establish research priorities and coordinate research across the western United States.

Field studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to evaluate cotton response to trifloxysulfuron applied postemergence over the top (POT) or postemergence-directed (PDIR) at various growth stages. Treatments included trifloxysulfuron at 3.8 or 7.5 g ai/ha plus nonionic surfactant (NIS) applied POT to one-, three-, and five-leaf cotton or applied PDIR to 30- and 45-cm tall cotton. Crop injury 7 d after treatment (DAT) varied by year and ranged from 17 to 50%, 19 to 46%, and 5 to 23% with trifloxysulfuron applied POT to one-, three-, and five-leaf cotton, respectively. Injury 21DAT averaged 22, 16, and 6% with one-, three-, and five-leaf applications respectively. Trifloxysulfuron applied PDIR injured cotton 2 to 9% 7 DAT and 0 to 12% 21 DAT. At 30 DAT, cotton height was reduced with one-leaf trifloxysulfuron application, whereas differences were not present across other treatments. Heights at 90 days after planting (DAP) did not differ between treatments. Neither trifloxysulfuron rate or application timing negatively affected cotton yield or fiber quality.
