Little mallow is becoming an increasing problem in no-till farming systems in southern Australia. There is little known about the germination ecology of this species, making management of the weed more difficult. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of different factors on seed germination. Freshly harvested seeds had high levels of innate dormancy with only 5% of seeds germinating. Germination increased with storage time but did not reach more than 47% even 13 mo after seed harvest. Germination was not influenced by light. Germination was stimulated by scarification, which indicates inhibition of germination in this species is mainly due to the seed coat. Germination was moderately sensitive to salt and osmotic stress. Germination was completely inhibited at osmotic potentials of −0.6 to −1 MPa. Seeds of little mallow germinated over a broad range of pH between 4 and 10, but germination declined at higher pH. Potassium nitrate at 0.005 M stimulated seed germination of scarified seeds to a maximum level of 76%. Seedling emergence of little mallow was greatest at burial depths of 0.5 to 2 cm. No emergence occurred at 8 cm or deeper. Greater emergence in response to shallow burial and the requirement for scarification may both contribute to the increasing problem of small mallow in no-till farming systems in southern Australia by delaying emergence until after the crop has been sown.

Greenhouse experiments that used capillary mat subirrigation to maintain constant soil moisture and to supply fertilizer continuously were conducted to evaluate the effects of sorghum or rye residue on early growth of barnyardgrass and velvetleaf. The separate effects of root residue and of shoot residue were compared to the combined effects of root plus shoot residues and to an uncovered soil control. Residues included as nontoxic controls were leached shoot tissue and poplar excelsior. Shoot residue, leached shoot tissue, and poplar excelsior were surface-applied on an equal light transmittance basis such that mass of poplar excelsior > shoot residue > leached shoot tissue. The presence of rye root residue delayed emergence of barnyardgrass. Surface-applied residues tended to decrease barnyardgrass height, but velvetleaf stem length was greater in treatments with surface residue. Although cover crop shoot residues had little effect on weed growth after 18 d, weed growth decreased in the presence of cover crop root residues and poplar excelsior.

Transfer of herbicide resistance among closely related weed species is a topic of growing concern. A spiny amaranth × Palmer amaranth hybrid was confirmed resistant to several acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors including imazethapyr, nicosulfuron, pyrithiobac, and trifloxysulfuron. Enzyme assays indicated that the ALS enzyme was insensitive to pyrithiobac and sequencing revealed the presence of a known resistance conferring point mutation, Trp574Leu. Alignment of the ALS gene for Palmer amaranth, spiny amaranth, and putative hybrids revealed the presence of Palmer amaranth ALS sequence in the hybrids rather than spiny amaranth ALS sequences. In addition, sequence upstream of the ALS in the hybrids matched Palmer amaranth and not spiny amaranth. The potential for transfer of ALS inhibitor resistance by hybridization has been demonstrated in the greenhouse and in field experiments. This is the first report of gene transfer for ALS inhibitor resistance documented to occur in the field without artificial/human intervention. These results highlight the need to control related species in both field and surrounding noncrop areas to avoid interspecific transfer of resistance genes.

Citral is a monoterpene commonly found as volatile component in many different aromatic plants. Although many studies have identified the presence of citral in phytotoxic essential oils, this work determines for the first time the potential herbicidal effect of citral on weeds. The use of citral against weeds and crops resulted in the potential for the management of barnyardgrass, redroot pigweed, and ribwort. Clear morphological differences were observed between adult thale cress plants exposed to citral in two different application methods: spraying and watering. Citral-sprayed and citral-watered thale cress plants showed completely different effects after treatment, suggesting that foliar or root absorption can determine the effectiveness of this compound. This work demonstrates that citral is effective not only on seedling metabolism but also on adult plants by inhibiting growth and development altering the plant oxidative status.

In recent years, herbicide resistance has attracted much attention as an increasingly urgent problem worldwide. Unfortunately, most of that effort was focused on confirmation of resistance and characterization of the mechanisms of resistance. For management purposes, knowledge about biology and ecology of the resistant weed phenotypes is critical. This includes fitness of the resistant biotypes compared with the corresponding wild biotypes. Accordingly, fitness has been the subject of many studies; however, lack of consensus on the concept of fitness resulted in poor experimental designs and misinterpretation of the ensuing data. In recent years, methodological protocols for conducting proper fitness studies have been proposed; however, we think these methods should be reconsidered from a herbicide-resistance management viewpoint. In addition, a discussion of the inherent challenges associated with fitness cost studies is pertinent. We believe that the methodological requirements for fitness studies of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes might differ from those applied in other scientific disciplines such as evolutionary ecology and genetics. Moreover, another important question is to what extent controlling genetic background is necessary when the aim of a fitness study is developing management practices for resistant biotypes. Among the methods available to control genetic background, we suggest two approaches (single population and pedigreed lines) as the most appropriate methods to detect differences between resistant (R) and susceptible (S) populations and to derive herbicide-resistant weed management programs. Based on these two methods, we suggest two new approaches that we named the “recurrent single population” and “recurrent pedigreed lines” methods. Importantly, whenever the aim of a fitness study is to develop optimal resistance management, we suggest selecting R and S plants within a single population and evaluating all fitness components from seed to seed instead of measuring changes in the frequency of R and S alleles through multigenerational fitness studies.

The current study aimed to screen glyphosate-alternative weed control methods in three perennial crops in Greece. Field trials were conducted and repeated (2018 to 2019 and 2019 to 2020) in a citrus orchard (Citrus clementina Hort. ex Tan), an olive grove (Olea europaea L.), and a vineyard (Vitis vinifera L.) under the randomized complete block design (nine treatments, four blocks). Glyphosate was applied in the citrus orchard (720 g ae ha−1), the olive grove (720 g ae ha−1), and the vineyard (1,800 g ae ha−1). Pelargonic acid (1,088 g ha−1; two times), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) residues and white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) residues were evaluated in all sites. Mowing was evaluated in the citrus orchard (one time) and the vineyard (two times). Flazasulfuron (50 g ha−1), oxyfluorfen (144 g ha−1), and flumioxazin (150 g ha−1) were applied in the citrus orchard and the olive grove. Penoxsulam + florasulam (15 + 7.5 g ha−1) was also applied in the olive grove. Cycloxydim (200 g ha−1), quizalofop-p-ethyl (150 g ha−1) and propaquizafop (150 g ha−1) were applied in the vineyard. An untreated control was included in all sites. Flazasulfuron, oxyfluorfen, and flumioxazin resulted in similar normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and weed biomass to glyphosate in the citrus orchard in both years and evaluations. Pelargonic acid (two times) and mowing (one time) were effective on broadleaf weeds. Flazasulfuron and penoxsulam + florasulam were the most promising glyphosate-alternative weed control methods against hairy fleabane [Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronquist] in the olive grove. Cover crop residues showed their suppressive ability as in the citrus orchard. All selective herbicides resulted in similar NDVI and johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] dry weight values in the vineyard in both years. Negative and strong correlations were observed in all sites and years between crop yield and weed dry weight (R2 = 0.543 to 0.924).

There are many concerns about the effects of repeated use of glyphosate in glyphosate-resistant (GR) crops, including two that are seemingly contradictory. These are (1) weed escapes and (2) loss of weed diversity. Weeds that escape glyphosate treatment represent species that likely will become troublesome and difficult to control in the future, and identifying these future problems may allow more effective management. In contrast, complete weed control directly reduces the weed component of agroecosystem biodiversity and may lower other components indirectly (e.g., weed-dependent granivores). During 2001 and 2002 effects of glyphosate and conventional weed control treatments on weed community composition and GR soybean yields were studied. Field studies were conducted along a north–south transect of sites spanning a distance of 1600 km from Minnesota to Louisiana. Low-intensity use (single application yr−1) of glyphosate allowed more escapes and maintained higher weed diversity than high-intensity use (two applications yr−1) of glyphosate, and it was equivalent to or even higher than diversity in non-GR systems. Although the same weeds escaped from low- and high-intensity glyphosate treatments, frequency of escapes was higher with less intensive use. These results suggest that limited use of glyphosate would not have profound effects on weed diversity. In addition, crop yield did not differ between GR and non-GR treatments at high latitudes, but below 40° N latitude, with a longer cropping season, yields with low-intensity glyphosate use decreased by about 2% per degree latitude because of competition from escaped weeds.

The dynamics of soil seed banks in crop rotations of corn, soybean, and winter wheat were investigated to determine whether weed seed inputs associated with the winter wheat phases of the rotation were present in the readily germinable fraction of the seed bank in subsequent phases. Two studies were conducted, each in chisel-plowed systems. In one study, we compared seed banks in plots after 8 yr of corn grown continuously and with rotation that included winter wheat and soybean. A second study followed seed bank composition and abundance for 3 yr in plots that were planted to corn and soybean in successive years after planting to winter wheat. Seed banks were measured by direct germination in a heated greenhouse. In the first study, seed banks in plots planted to continuous corn (never planted to winter wheat) and the corn phase of the rotation (winter wheat planted 3 yr earlier) did not differ in species composition or abundance despite significant differences in seed banks in plots that had been planted to winter wheat the previous season. In the second study, seed bank abundance and composition in plots planted to winter wheat in 2001 rapidly changed after planting of corn and soybean in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Data from the two experiments suggest that seed banks in annual row crops experience rapid change in composition and abundance and can be strongly influenced by the most recent crop. This could limit our ability to infer longer term trends associated with changes in management practices from studies of soil seed banks.

Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] had several effects on carbon translocation in sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L. ‘Klein E multigerm’): a) import of carbon by sink leaves was inhibited, b) net starch accumulation in source leaves was stopped, and c) carbon export from source leaves in the dark was stopped following 10 h of treatment in the light. During periods when no carbon was exported, glyphosate also was not transported from treated leaves. The limitation of glyphosate transport, resulting from disruption of carbon metabolism, appears important in the study and use of the herbicide.

Weed genetic diversity is important for understanding the ability of weeds to adapt to different environments and the impact of herbicide selection on weed populations. Genetic diversity within and among six wild oat populations in China varying in herbicide selection pressure and one population in North Dakota were surveyed using 64 polymorphic alleles resulting from 25 microsatellite loci. Mean Nei's gene diversity (h) for six wild oat populations from China was between 0.17 and 0.21, and total diversity (HT) was 0.23. A greater proportion of this diversity, however, was within (Hs = 0.19) rather than among (Gst = 0.15) populations. For the wild oat population from the United States, h = 0.24 and HT = 0.24 were comparable to the values for the six populations from China. Cluster analysis divided the seven populations into two groups, where one group was the United States population and the other group included the six Chinese populations. The genetic relationships among six populations from China were weakly correlated with their geographic distribution (r = 0.22) using the Mantel test. Minimal difference in gene diversity and small genetic distance (Nei's distance 0.07 or less) among six populations from China are consistent with wide dispersal of wild oat in the 1980s. Our results indicate that the wild oat populations in China are genetically diverse at a level similar to North America, and the genetic diversity of wild oat in the broad spatial scale is not substantially changed by environment, agronomic practices, or herbicide usage.

Auxin-mediated responses of kochia biotypes resistant to dicamba (HRd) or resistant to dicamba and fluroxypyr (HRdf) were compared with those of two susceptible biotypes. Rates of shoot and root gravitropic response and patterns of apical dominance, as determined by lateral bud sprouting after decapitation, were determined in the absence of herbicide treatment. Shoots of susceptible plants reoriented toward vertical at a rate of 23.4° h−1, whereas the rates of HRd and HRdf shoot reorientation were significantly slower at 7.2° and 14.4° h−1, respectively. Root gravitropic responses were not different between resistant and susceptible biotypes. In contrast to susceptible biotypes, both apical and basal lateral buds on HRd plants elongated after decapitation, although differences between HRd and susceptible biotypes became smaller during succeeding weeks. The elongation pattern of HRdf lateral buds was intermediate to that of susceptible and HRd plants. Inhibition assays of root growth by natural and synthetic auxins showed that HRd root growth was less sensitive to dicamba, 2,4-D, naphthalene-1-acetic acid, and indole-3-acetic acid than was root growth of HRdf or the susceptible biotypes. Collectively, results support the hypothesis that auxin binding or signal transduction pathways are impaired in resistant biotypes and that HRd may contain different lesions than does HRdf.

Three microcapsule formulations, two starch xanthate formulations, and one commercial formulation of trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) were evaluated in the greenhouse and field for their relative herbicidal efficacy and persistence. Biological assays with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) revealed significant differences among the formulations in phytotoxicity and persistence. The commercial formulation of trifluralin was generally more phytotoxic than the others to Italian ryegrass sown the week of herbicide application. The two starch xanthate formulations and one microcapsule formulation of trifluralin were generally more phytotoxic and more persistent than the commercial formulation to Italian ryegrass sown from 1 through 19 weeks after herbicide application.

A study was conducted to determine the effects of five densities each of rough pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), green foxtail (Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv.), and combinations of the two upon sugar beet yields, top weights, percent sucrose, and total vegetation weights. Green foxtail was less competitive per plant than rough pigweed. Foxtail densities of less than one plant per beet did not reduce beet yields significantly. Rough pigweed alone or combined with green foxtail reduced the beet root yields significantly at all densities in this study. Root yields were reduced 80 percent by two pigweeds and two foxtails per sugar beet. Beet top weights were consistently higher than those of the roots and were reduced approximately in proportion to those of the roots by the various weed densities. The diameter and length of the sugar beets were significantly reduced by competition, the diameter being more affected than the length. The percent sucrose of sugar beets was not affected by weed competition.

Cover crop–based, organic rotational no-till (CCORNT) corn and soybean systems have been developed in the mid-Atlantic region to build soil health, increase management flexibility, and reduce labor. In this system, a roller-crimped cover crop mulch provides within-season weed suppression in no-till corn and soybean. A cropping system experiment was conducted in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware to test the cumulative effects of a multitactic weed management approach in a 3-yr hairy vetch/triticale–corn–cereal rye–soybean–winter wheat CCORNT rotation. Treatments included delayed planting dates (early, intermediate, late) and supplemental weed control using high-residue (HR) cultivation in no-till corn and soybean phases. In the no-till corn phase, HR cultivation decreased weed biomass relative to the uncultivated control by 58%, 23%, and 62% in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, respectively. In the no-till soybean phase, HR cultivation decreased weed biomass relative to the uncultivated treatment planted in narrow rows (19 to 38 cm) by 20%, 41%, and 78% in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, respectively. Common ragweed was more dominant in soybean (39% of total biomass) compared with corn (10% of total biomass), whereas giant foxtail and smooth pigweed were more dominant in corn, comprising 46% and 22% of total biomass, respectively. Common ragweed became less abundant as corn and soybean planting dates were delayed, whereas giant foxtail and smooth pigweed increased as a percentage of total biomass as planting dates were delayed. At the Pennsylvania location, inconsistent termination of cover crops with the roller-crimper resulted in volunteer cover crops in other phases of the rotation. Our results indicate that HR cultivation is necessary to achieve adequate weed control in CCORNT systems. Integration of winter grain or perennial forages into CCORNT systems will also be an important management tactic for truncating weed seedbank population increases.

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats. # AMAPA) residue was incorporated into soil to determine its allelopathic effects on the seedling growth of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench.), cabbage (Brassica oleracea, var. capitata L.), carrot (Daucus carota L.), and onion (Allium cepa L.). Root and shoot growths were equally sensitive to the toxic effects of soil-incorporated Palmer amaranth. Growth of ‘Grand Slam’ cultivar of cabbage was 17 to 30% more sensitive than the growth of 'Sanibel’ cabbage. Growth of onion and carrot seedlings was less inhibited than either cabbage or grain sorghum. Growth of grain sorghum root was severely inhibited by 8000 and 16 000 ppm of Palmer amaranth in soil and was not affected by oven dryings other than lyophilization. Seedling growth was more severely inhibited by thyrsus and leaf tissues than by stem and root tissues of Palmer amaranth.

Venice mallow is an emerging weed problem in many regions of the world in various crops. Studies on its hard seed coat were conducted by scanning electron, light, and fluorescence microscopy. The effects of environmental factors on germination and seedling emergence were examined in laboratory experiments. Seeds possessed physical dormancy (90%) that required immersion for 0.5 h in concentrated sulfuric acid to break without damaging the seed. After scarification, 29% of seeds exhibited primary embryo dormancy. Exposure of seeds to even short periods of 15 d of prechilling induced secondary dormancy (10% germination). The surface of hard seeds had a velvety appearance from numerous papillate structures and deposits (hydrophilic material). The location of the water barrier was very superficial in the outer seed coat. Although, in hard seeds, the hilar area appeared to have vertical ruptures and the hilum fissure appeared to be open, there was no water entry. It was observed that microruptures could be the region of structural weakness of hard seeds in relation to water permeability during prolonged burial (8 mo).

The highest (60%) germination was recorded at a day/night temperature of 30/20 C with a 12-h photoperiod. No germination was measured at either 10 or 45 C constant temperature. Germination was recorded with a broad range of pH (3-11) and seeds were rather tolerant to low water potential (20% germination at –1.2 MPa). Seedling emergence was higher for seeds buried at 2 cm than for those placed on the surface (54 vs. 38%, respectively). These results showed that Venice mallow is a rather unique species that possesses a complex mechanism of dormancy (physical, primary, and secondary). Information gained in this study will be used in developing management strategies for this species.

The relationship between species richness and sample area has been characterized in many natural communities but has rarely been examined in crop–weed communities. We determined the species–area relationship in short-term (≤4 yr) and long-term (>15 yr) moldboard-plowed (MP), chisel-plowed (CP), and no-tillage (NT) fields cropped to corn and in short-term MP, CP, and NT fields cropped to soybean. A total of 10 corn fields and 10 soybean fields were sampled for species richness in 14 nested sample areas that ranged from 0.0625 to 512 m2. The influence of sample area on frequency of species occurrence was also determined. Species richness was greater in long-term NT fields than in tilled or short-term NT fields. The species–area relationship in tilled and short-term NT fields was best described by an exponential function. In contrast, a power function was the best fit for the species–area relationship in long-term NT fields. The functional minimum area required to represent 75% of the total weed species in tilled and short-term NT fields was 32 m2. A functional minimum area could not be determined in long-term NT fields because species richness continued to increase over the range of sample areas. Regression functions predicted that sample areas of 1 m2 would contain less than 50% of the observed maximum species richness in these fields. Sample areas of 36 m2 in tilled and short-term NT fields and 185 m2 in long-term NT fields were predicted to measure 75% of observed maximum species richness in these fields. Pigweed species and common lambsquarters occurred at high frequencies and were detected in most sample areas. This information could be used to better define sample area requirements and improve sampling procedures for species richness of weed communities.

The technique of microradioautography was used to study the absorption and translocation of a,a,a-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine (trifluralin) by cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., var. Coker 201) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr., var. Lee). Radioactivity from 14C-trifluralin was retained primarily on the surfaces of the roots of cotton and soybean. This was apparently due to a tenacious adsorption or binding of the radioactivity to the epidermis and cuticle. Entrance of radioactivity into the roots of these species was greatly facilitated by breaks in the epidermis, such as might occur from seedling diseases or mechanical damage. Within the roots, radioactivity was noted in the walls of the xylem vessels and cortical cells. Little movement out of the soybean roots was observed, but limited movement of radioactivity into the leaves of cotton, apparently via the metaxylem, was noted. Radioactivity accumulated in the protoxylem of the cotton stem where many elements appeared to be plugged. Results of this study indicate that care should be used in interpreting data from studies where loss of radioactivity from nutrient media is used as a criterion of herbicide absorption, and where gross radio autography is used as an indicator of herbicide translocation.

Experiments were conducted over 4 yr to investigate the effects of four postemergence herbicides on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Williams 79’] yield under weed-free conditions. Bentazon [3-(1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide], acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid}, and naptalam/dinoseb {2-[(1-naphthalenylamino)carbonyl] benzoic acid}/[2-(1-methylpropyl)-4,6-dinitrophenol] alone and in combination with 2,4-DB [4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) butyric acid] applied to soybeans at the V3 and V5 soybean growth stages caused early crop injury, but soybeans outgrew most of the injury by 21 days and there was no effect on yield. Bentazon plus 2,4-DB with or without adjuvant did not affect the yield of five soybean cultivars tested.

One approach to site-specific weed control is to map weeds within a field and then divide the field area into smaller grid units. The decision to apply a herbicide to individual grid units, or decision units, is made by using yield loss models to establish an economic threshold level. However, decision units often contain weed populations with aggregated distributions. Many yield loss models have not considered this because experiments dealing with weed–crop competition typically assume uniform weed distributions. Therefore, these models may overestimate yield losses. Field experiments conducted in 1999 and 2000 compared the effects of common ragweed having a uniform distribution vs. an aggregated distribution on soybean seed yield, moisture content, and dockage. Field experiment data were used to calculate and compare economic thresholds for both distributions. Economic thresholds that considered drying costs and dockage also were compared. There was no significant difference in I parameters (yield loss as density approaches zero) between the two ragweed distributions in either year. Seed moisture content and dockage increased with increasing common ragweed densities, but increases were not significant at the break-even yield loss level. Economic threshold values were similar for both distributions with differences between aggregated and uniform of 0.14 and 0.01 plants m−2 in 1999 and 2000, respectively. The economic threshold values were reduced by 0.01 to 0.06 plants m−2 when drying costs and dockage were considered.
