A fixed (conventional) weed management strategy in corn was compared to three other strategies (two mixed and one flexible) in terms of weed control, grain yield, gross margin (gross income minus herbicide treatment costs), and herbicide use under furrow irrigation for four consecutive years. The fixed strategy prespecified preplanting, preemergence, postemergence, and layby herbicides. The flexible strategy herbicide treatments were specified by a computer bioeconomic model. Model decisions were based on weed seed in soil before planting, weed densities after corn emergence, herbicide costs, expected corn grain yield and selling price, and other parameters. The two mixed strategies were a combination of fixed and flexible strategies and designated either specified soil-applied herbicides (mixed/soil), or no soil-applied herbicide (mixed/no soil); postemergence treatments were determined by the model. Average corn grain yield was 10 280 kg ha–1 and gross income was 920 $ ha–1 and neither differed among strategies. Total weed density and gross margin were significantly higher for the mixed/no soil and flexible strategies compared to the mixed/soil and fixed strategies. Total weed density averaged 28 720, 28 100, 10 910, and 680 plants ha–1 for the mixed/no soil, flexible, mixed/soil, and fixed strategies, respectively. Annual gross margins for the four strategies averaged 885, 875, 845, and 810 $ ha–1, respectively. Herbicide use over the 4-yr period for these four strategies averaged 3.8, 5.3, 20.5, and 26.9 kg ha–1, respectively, and each value differed from the other. Thus, weeds can be managed in corn, gross margins increased, and herbicide use decreased by employing a bioeconomic weed-corn model to make weed management decisions.

A screening method was used to characterize seed thermal responses of prostrate knotweed and common purslane, two important weeds invading wheat in the humid Pampa. Through this method, it was possible to detect thermal conditions that induce or break dormancy in both species. In addition, we were able to quantify changes in dormancy level in seed populations as a function of time of burial after dispersal, through changes in width of the thermal range within which germination can occur. Plotting the overlap of this thermal range and observed soil temperature throughout the year allowed the prediction of the seedling emergence period. This prediction was in agreement with observed seedling emergence in the field for both species, during 2 consecutive yr. From the analysis carried out under laboratory conditions, it was also possible to estimate required thermal time for germination of the nondormant fraction of the population and the base temperature above which thermal time is accumulated. The results obtained from this study are the basis for the formulation of seed germination models that predict not only the occurrence of seedling emergence in the field, but also the dynamics of germination within those periods.

The increase in atmospheric CO2 levels can influence the growth of many invasive exotic plant species. However, it is not well-documented, especially for C4 plants, how these growth responses will alter the effectiveness of the world's most widely used herbicide for weed control, glyphosate. We aimed to address this question by carrying out a series of glasshouse experiments to determine if tolerance to glyphosate is increased in four C4 invasive exotic grasses grown under elevated CO2 in nonlimiting water conditions. In addition, traits including specific leaf area, leaf weight ratio, leaf area ratio, root : shoot ratio, total leaf area, and total biomass were measured in order to assess their contribution to glyphosate response under ambient and elevated CO2 levels. Three of the four mature grass species that were treated with the recommended concentration of glyphosate displayed increased tolerance to glyphosate under elevated CO2. This was due to increased biomass production resulting in a dilution effect on the glyphosate within the plant. From this study, we can conclude that as atmospheric CO2 levels increase, application rates of glyphosate might need to be increased to counteract the growth stimulation of invasive exotic plants.

Cover crops can provide many benefits in agroecosystems, including the opportunity for improved weed control. However, the weed suppressive potential of cover crops may depend on the species (or mixture of species) chosen, and the method of cover crop termination and residue management. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of cover crop mixture and mechanical termination method on weed biomass and density, and relative crop yield in an organic cropping system. A field experiment was conducted from 2009 to 2011 near Mead, NE, where spring-sown mixtures of two, four, six, and eight cover crop species were included in a sunflower–soybean–corn crop rotation. Cover crops were planted in late March, terminated in late May using a field disk or sweep plow undercutter, and main crops were planted within 1 wk of termination. Terminating cover crops with the undercutter consistently reduced early-season grass weed biomass, whereas termination with the field disk typically stimulated grass weed biomass relative to a no cover crop control (NC). The effects of cover crop mixture were not evident in 2009, but the combination of the undercutter and the eight-species mixture reduced early-season weed biomass by 48% relative to the NC treatment in 2010. Cover crops provided less weed control in 2011, where only the combination of the undercutter and the two-species mixture reduced weed biomass (by 31%) relative to the NC treatment. Termination with the undercutter resulted in relative yield increases of 16.6 and 22.7% in corn and soybean, respectively. In contrast, termination with the field disk resulted in a relative yield reduction of 13.6% in soybean. The dominant influence of termination method highlights the importance of appropriate cover crop residue management in maximizing potential agronomic benefits associated with cover crops.

Leaf discs of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), broadleaf plantain (Plantago major L.), soybeans (Glycine max Merrill), and corn (Zea mays L.) were incubated 1 hr in aqueous solutions of methyl- or ring-labeled 3-(p-chlorophenyl)-l,l-dimethylurea-14C (monuron) or carbonyl-labeled 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-l,l-dimethyl-urea-14C (diuron). The loss of herbicide and formation of metabolites were determined at approximately 1-hr intervals up to 7 hr. Cotton leaf discs actively metabolized monuron to l-(p-chlorophenyl)-3-methylurea (monomethylmonuron), l-(p-chlorophenyl)urea (p-chlorophenylurea), and p-chloroaniline. Plantain leaf discs strongly metabolized diuron to l-(3-,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-methylurea (monomethyldiuron) and l-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)urea (3,4-dichlorophenylurea). Plantain degraded monuron less actively than diuron and cotton degraded diuron less rapidly than monuron. In soybean leaf discs, metabolism did not progress beyond the first demethylation, and corn leaf discs were unable to metabolize the herbicides in short-term studies.

Studies were conducted to measure the foliar activity of sethoxydim (BAS 9052 OH) {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} and RO-13-8895 {acetone-O-[D-2-[p-[(α,α,α-trifluoro-p-tolyl)-oxy] phenoxy] propionyl] oxime} as affected by adjuvants, soil moisture, and growth stage of grasses, and to compare the responses of three grass species to these herbicides. The activity of both herbicides was increased by adjuvants. The activity of sethoxydim was not significantly affected by soil moisture. Goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. ♯3 ELEIN] and broadleaf signalgrass [Brachiaria platyphylla (Griseb. ♯ BRAPP) Nash] control was greater with RO-13-8895 at the high than at the low soil moisture level. Soil moisture did not influence large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. ♯ DIGSA] control, since it was relatively tolerant to RO-13-8895. Both herbicides gave greater control at early than at late growth stages. When averaged over all variables, sethoxydim gave greater large crabgrass control than RO-13-8895, but RO-13-8895 gave greater goosegrass and broadleaf signalgrass control than sethoxydim.

Experiments were conducted in 1985 and 1986 to determine and compare the efficacy, phytotoxicity, and soil persistence of imazquin, imazethapyr, and clomazone in no-till double-crop soybeans. All herbicides controlled 93% or greater jimsonweed, velvetleaf, and giant foxtail. Imazaquin and imazethapyr controlled more common cocklebur and ivyleaf morningglory than clomazone. Soybeans were injured from imazaquin and imazethapyr applications in 1986 but yields were not reduced. First-order kinetics described the dissipation of each herbicide. Imazaquin and imazethapyr were more persistent in the soil than clomazone. Averaged over both years, half-lives of 10, 43, and 60 days were calculated for clomazone, imazaquin, and imazethapyr, respectively. Clomazone was not detected 10 to 20 cm in the soil profile. More imazethapyr was detected 10 to 20 cm in the soil profile than imazaquin in 1985. Slight corn injury (≤10%) was observed in 1987 following previous year applications of imazaquin to no-till double-crop soybeans but corn yields were not reduced.

Absorption, translocation, and metabolism of 14C-glufosinate were studied in three annual and two perennial weed species. Young seedlings of Setaria faberi, Chenopodium album, Cassia obtusifolia, Solanum carolinense, and Asclepias syriaca were treated with foliar-applied 14C-glufosinate, and plant tissues were harvested 12, 48, and 72 h after treatment (HAT). Absorption of 14C-glufosinate was initially rapid, but increased only slightly after 12 h in all species. Glufosinate absorption was highest in S. carolinense (73% of applied radioactivity), followed by S. faberi (54%), C. obtusifolia (44%), C. album (41%), and A. syriaca (37%) 72 HAT. Translocation of radioactivity out of the treated leaf was species dependent and did not increase much with time in all weed species. S. carolinense and S. faberi translocated the highest amounts of absorbed radioactivity out of the treated leaf with 49 to 59% moving to the upper foliage. S. faberi translocated the highest amount of absorbed radioactivity to the roots (12 to 14%), while C. album translocated the least (2 to 3%). TLC analysis of plant extracts showed that 14C-glufosinate was not metabolized in S. faberi, C. obtusifolia, S. carolinense, and A. syriaca. A glufosinate metabolite with an Rf value matching that of methyl-phosphinico propionate was detected in C. album. Treatment with ammonium sulfate (AMS) increased glufosinate absorption in S. faberi and C. obtusifolia 12 HAT, but decreased absorption in C. album. Treatment with pelargonic acid (PA) did not affect glufosinate absorption in any of the species tested. Treatment with AMS and PA did not affect glufosinate translocation in any of the five weed species. Treatment with AMS and PA did not influence the metabolism of glufosinate in any of the five weed species studied. These results show that differential absorption and translocation seem to explain the greater sensitivity of the annual and perennial weeds to glufosinate. Treatment with ammonium sulfate may increase the efficacy of glufosinate in perennial weeds.

The influence of herbicide placement and plant growth stage on the absorption and translocation patterns of 14C-glyphosate in glyphosate-resistant cotton was investigated. Plants at four growth stages were treated with 14C-glyphosate on a 5-cm2 section of the stem, which simulated a postemergence-directed spray (PDS) application, or on the newest mature leaf, which simulated a postemergence (POST) application. Plants were harvested 3 and 7 d after treatment and divided into the treated leaf or treated stem, mature leaves, immature leaves and buds, stems, roots, fruiting branches (including the foliage on the fruiting branch), squares, and bolls. The PDS versus POST application main effect on absorption was significant. Absorption of 14C-glyphosate applied to stem tissue was higher in PDS applications than in POST applications. Plants receiving PDS applications absorbed 35% of applied 14C-glyphosate, whereas those receiving POST applications absorbed 26%, averaged over growth stages at application. Absorption increased from the four-leaf growth stage to the eight-leaf stage in POST applications but reached a plateau at the eight-leaf stage. Plants with PDS applications showed an increase in absorption from the four- to eight- to twelve-leaf stages and reached a plateau at the 12-leaf stage. Translocation of 14C-glyphosate to roots was greater at all growth stages with PDS treatments than with POST treatments. Herbicide placement did not affect translocation of 14C-glyphosate to squares and bolls. Squares and bolls retained 0.2 to 3.7% of applied 14C-glyphosate, depending on growth stage. Separate studies were conducted to investigate the fate of foliar-applied 14C-glyphosate at the four- or eight-leaf growth stages when harvested at 8- or 10-leaf, 12-leaf, midbloom (8 to 10 nodes above white bloom), and cutout (five nodes above white bloom, physiological maturity) stages. Thirty to 37% of applied 14C-glyphosate remained in the plant at cutout in four- and eight-leaf treatment stages, respectively. The concentration of 14C-glyphosate in tissue (Bq g−1 dry weight basis) was greatest in mature leaves and immature leaves and buds in plants treated at the four-leaf stage. Plants treated at the eight-leaf stage and harvested at all growth stages except cutout showed a higher concentration of 14C-glyphosate in squares than in other plant tissue. Accumulation of 14C-glyphosate in squares reached a maximum of 43 Bq g−1 dry weight at harvest at the 12-leaf stage. This concentration corresponds to 5.7 times greater accumulation of 14C-glyphosate in squares than in roots, which may also be metabolic sinks. These data suggest that reproductive tissues such as bolls and squares can accumulate 14C-glyphosate at higher concentrations than other tissues, especially when the herbicide treatment is applied either POST or PDS during reproductive stages (eight-leaf stage and beyond).

Giant ragweed has been increasing as a major weed of row crops in the last 30 yr, but quantitative data regarding its pattern and mechanisms of spread in crop fields are lacking. To address this gap, we conducted a Web-based survey of certified crop advisors in the U.S. Corn Belt and Ontario, Canada. Participants were asked questions regarding giant ragweed and crop production practices for the county of their choice. Responses were mapped and correlation analyses were conducted among the responses to determine factors associated with giant ragweed populations. Respondents rated giant ragweed as the most or one of the most difficult weeds to manage in 45% of 421 U.S. counties responding, and 57% of responding counties reported giant ragweed populations with herbicide resistance to acetolactate synthase inhibitors, glyphosate, or both herbicides. Results suggest that giant ragweed is increasing in crop fields outward from the east-central U.S. Corn Belt in most directions. Crop production practices associated with giant ragweed populations included minimum tillage, continuous soybean, and multiple-application herbicide programs; ecological factors included giant ragweed presence in noncrop edge habitats, early and prolonged emergence, and presence of the seed-burying common earthworm in crop fields. Managing giant ragweed in noncrop areas could reduce giant ragweed migration from noncrop habitats into crop fields and slow its spread. Where giant ragweed is already established in crop fields, including a more diverse combination of crop species, tillage practices, and herbicide sites of action will be critical to reduce populations, disrupt emergence patterns, and select against herbicide-resistant giant ragweed genotypes. Incorporation of a cereal grain into the crop rotation may help suppress early giant ragweed emergence and provide chemical or mechanical control options for late-emerging giant ragweed.

Medusahead, Elymus caput-medusae L., an exotic winter annual grass, was introduced into northeastern Washington and probably adjacent Idaho over 50 years ago. Official records show its presence in southwestern Idaho 15 years ago, but ranchers in this area assert that it was present 25 to 30 years ago. Prior to 1950 it was known to infest a few thousand acres in southwestern Idaho and its distribution from 1945 to 1950 appeared rather static.

Addition of organic matter reduced the effectiveness of 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) to oats in Regina heavy clay soil. At high moisture levels, changes in the relative amounts of clay in the soil did not affect the toxicity of simazine. Toxicity of simazine decreased as the soil moisture level was reduced.

In bioassays, rice (Oryza sativa L.) recovery from metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] injury tended to be slower in flooded rice, but was not significantly different from the recovery rate in a nonflooded rice. In soils treated with 1 ppm (w/w) metolachlor and incubated in constant-temperature chambers, the half-life of metolachlor was shorter at 40 C than at 30 C. The degradation rate of metolachlor was not significantly correlated with declining moisture potentials in the range of −30 to −80 kPa. The CO2 evolution from metolachlor-treated soil was negatively correlated with incubation time and positively correlated to declining moisture levels. In a field study, metolachlor, as determined by bioassay, was mobile in a Taloka silt loam soil profile. After being incorporated to 7.5 cm, it became evenly distributed in the top 15 cm of the soil profile within 18 days. Metolachlor adsorption was positively correlated with clay and organic carbon content.

In F2 progeny, derived from F1 hybrids, shoot growth of seedlings, measured 4 d after germination, distinguished susceptible (S) and resistant (R) phenotypes. Chisquare values indicated that the F2 data fit a 3:1 (S:R) ratio for both populations and all trifluralin concentrations in which S and R phenotypes could be differentiated. Results indicate that trifluralin resistance in these green foxtail populations is controlled by a single, nuclear recessive gene. This study is the first to demonstrate recessive gene control of herbicide resistance in a weed species. The highly selfed nature and prolific seed production of green foxtail may have facilitated evolution of the recessive trait.

Volatilities of 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine [simazine], 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine [atrazine], 2-chloro-4,6-bis(isopropylamino)-s-triazine [propazine], 2-methoxy-4,6-bis(isopropylamino)-s-triazine [prometone], 2-ethylamino-4-isopropylamino-6-methylmercapto-s-triazine [ametryne], 2,4-bis-(isopropylamino)-6-methylmercapto-s-triazine [prometryne], and 2-chloro-4-diethylamino-6-ethylamino-s-triazine [trietazine] were studied at different temperatures. In descending order at 25 C the relative volatilities of the herbicides from nickel-plated planchets were prometone ≅ trietazine > atrazine ≅ ametryne ≅ prometryne > propazine ≅ simazine. Prometone losses from five soils appeared to be directly related to per cent sand and inversely related to per cent clay and organic matter. Atrazine and simazine losses from the same soils appeared to be less influenced by soil properties than prometone. All seven s-triazines were examined at one temperature on wet and dry Tifton loamy sand. Moisture level affected both the amount of compound lost and the relative order of loss among compounds. Conversion of atrazine and prometone to their corresponding hydroxy analogues was a practical method for preventing vapor losses from planchets.

Glyphosate is widely used for weed control in the grape growing industry in southern Australia. The intensive use of glyphosate in this industry has resulted in the evolution of glyphosate resistance in rigid ryegrass. Two populations of rigid ryegrass from vineyards, SLR80 and SLR88, had 6- to 11-fold resistance to glyphosate in dose-response studies. These resistance levels were higher than two previously well-characterized glyphosate-resistant populations of rigid ryegrass (SLR77 and NLR70), containing a modified target site or reduced translocation, respectively. Populations SLR80 and SLR88 accumulated less glyphosate, 12 and 17% of absorbed glyphosate, in the shoot in the resistant populations compared with 26% in the susceptible population. In addition, a mutation within the target enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) where Pro106 had been substituted by either serine or threonine was identified. These two populations are more highly resistant to glyphosate as a consequence of expressing two different resistance mechanisms concurrently.

Thylakoid membranes isolated from chloroplasts of atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine]-susceptible (S) and -resistant (R) biotypes of common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.) were assayed to determine the effect of diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], bromacil (5-bromo-3-sec-butyl-6-methyluracil) and several s-triazine herbicides on photosystem II (PSII) activity. Each herbicide inhibited photosynthetic electron transport on the reducing side of PSII in thylakoid membranes from the susceptible biotype. Thylakoids isolated from the resistant biotype were 60 to 3200 times more tolerant to the inhibitors than thylakoids from the susceptible biotype. Electrophoretic analysis revealed no differences in molecular weight of membrane polypeptides of either common groundsel biotype. Three-hour dark incubation did not enhance inhibitor activity in the resistant-type thylakoid membranes. Specific structural or configurational changes associated with the reactive site may account for the differences in Hill reaction inhibition between biotypes. A relationship between herbicide structure and Hill reaction activity is discussed.

Root sections of Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop.) ecotypes from different states were field planted at Bozeman, Montana. Canada thistle survival from repeated applications of (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D), and 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (amitrole) was markedly different. Ecotypes varied less markedly to cultivation although they differed significantly. Resistance of ecotypes to cultivation seemed related to adaptation to site while resistance to herbicides apparently was related to inherent physiological differences as well as to differences in adaptation.

This research was conducted to evaluate the light requirement for redroot and smooth pigweed germination in soil, and how this requirement is affected by germination temperature and seasonal periodicity in seed dormancy. Seed enclosed in nylon mesh bags was buried in the field in December 1993 and 1994 and was recovered throughout the spring and summer of the following year, respectively. Germination was highest with red light or at 30 C. The requirement for red light was more pronounced at 20 vs. 30 C. The saturating fluence of red light was as low as 3 μmol m−2 in buried seed and 1,000 μmol m−2 in unburied control seed, depending on germination temperature. The effect of light and germination temperature pigweed germination also changed throughout the growing season. Our results indicate that light may be a requirement for germination in only the most dormant weed seed in the soil seedbank.

Acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) assays and absorption, translocation, and metabolism experiments were conducted to investigate the mechanism(s) responsible for resistance in a johnsongrass biotype that exhibited low levels of resistance to the cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicide sethoxydim and the aryloxyphenoxypropionate (APP) herbicides quizalofop-P and fluazifop-P. The rate of [14C]quizalofop-ethyl absorption was significantly higher in the resistant compared to the susceptible biotype 8, 24, and 48 h after treatment (HAT), but by 72 HAT, there was no significant difference in the amount of [14C]quizalofop-ethyl detected in either biotype. Additionally, little or no differences in the translocation of [14C]quizalofop-ethyl were observed in the resistant and susceptible biotypes at any time interval after application. In [14C]quizalofop-ethyl metabolism experiments, similar levels of quizalofop-ethyl and quizalofop metabolites were observed in the resistant and susceptible biotypes 8, 24, 48, and 72 HAT, but slightly higher levels of quizalofop acid were detected in the resistant biotype 48 and 72 HAT. In ACCase assays, the concentrations of quizalofop-P, clethodim, and sethoxydim that inhibited ACCase activity by 50% (I50) were statistically similar in the two biotypes, indicating that the resistant johnsongrass biotype contains an ACCase that is sensitive to the APP and CHD herbicides. In the absence of APP or CHD herbicides, however, the specific activity of ACCase in the resistant biotype was two to three times greater than that of the susceptible biotype. The specific activity of ACCase in the resistant biotype was also significantly greater than that of the susceptible biotype in the presence of all concentrations of quizalofop-P and sethoxydim and in the presence of 0.1, 1, and 10 µM clethodim. These results suggest that resistance to quizalofop-P and sethoxydim is conferred by an overproduction of ACCase in the resistant johnsongrass biotype.
