In western Canada, seasonal seedling recruitment has been reported in weedy canola populations, and seed persistence has been linked to the secondary seed dormancy potential of a genotype. Temperature influences secondary seed dormancy induction in this species. In these experiments we (1) investigated the influence of temperature and osmotic potential on secondary seed dormancy induction in canola, (2) related these to seedbank dynamics and seedling recruitment of two canola genotypes with different seed dormancy potentials in the field, and (3) investigated the influence of residue, burial depth, and soil type on seedbank dynamics and seedling recruitment in the field. In the laboratory, rates of seed dormancy induction were positively correlated to increasing temperatures and water stress. The role of temperature was approximately threefold more important to seed dormancy development than was osmotic potential within the tested ranges of these variables. In the field, seasonal seedbank dynamics of canola buried at 10 cm were strongly influenced by a genotype's inherent potential for secondary dormancy. An increase in the ungerminable portion of the seedbank was observed in the high-dormancy genotype as soil temperatures increased during spring. This did not occur in the low-dormancy genotype, resulting in sixfold less seed persistence in this genotype by midsummer, by which time, the total remaining seedbank was ungerminable in both genotypes. At the 1-cm burial depth, most of the seedbank was depleted by midsummer of the year after seedbank establishment because of high seedbank mortality in all treatments. Thus, the seasonal recruitment behavior in canola was primarily a function of seed death in the shallow seedbank and a shift to an ungerminable state in the deep seedbank.

The effects of several inorganic salts on the toxicity and translocation of nonradiolabeled and 14C-radiolabeled MSMA (monosodium salt of MAA) and the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] following foliar applications to purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L. ♯ CYPRO) were evaluated. Salts of the monovalent cations NH4+, K+, and Na+ and to a lesser degree the anion PO4 generally resulted in increased toxicity of these herbicides. Salts of the divalent and trivalent cations Zn++ and Fe+++ frequently reduced the activity of glyphosate and MSMA, whereas salts of the divalent Ca++ ion caused little or no effect on activity. Salts of the anions Cl–, NO3–, CO3—-, and SO4– resulted in increased, decreased, or unchanged glyphosate toxicity as influenced by the associated cation. Translocation of the radiolabel of 14C-glyphosate and 14C-MSMA was increased by the addition of NH4Cl, while retention of the radiolabel within the tissue of the treated area was increased by the addition of FeCl3 to the treated leaf surface.

Field, greenhouse, and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the effect of application timing on the activity of DPX-V9360 on rhizome johnsongrass. Field and greenhouse studies indicated that johnsongrass treated with postemergence applications of DPX-V9360 at late growth stages (>5 leaves) was controlled more effectively than when treated in early growth stages (<5 leaves). Johnsongrass control was optimized with split-postemergence applications (treatments applied at early and late growth stages) in field studies compared to a single postemergence application at either early or late growth stages. The pattern of translocation of 2-14C (pyrimidine)-labeled DPX-V9360 applied to a fully expanded johnsongrass leaf did not differ significantly between three different growth stages of 10-, 30-, and 60-cm height. Over 60% of the absorbed 14C remained in the treated leaf. Most of the translocated 14C moved out of the treated leaf within 3 days after application and distributed to the shoot in greater quantities than to the rhizomes. About 40% of 14C-DPX-V9360 applied to the leaf surfaces of a tolerant species (corn) or susceptible species (johnsongrass) was absorbed into the leaf. Corn metabolized over 90% of absorbed DPX-V9360 within 20 h, while there was no perceptible metabolism of DPX-V9360 in johnsongrass leaves after 24 h. Late growth stage and split-postemergence applications appear to provide more effective control than early growth stage applications because of better control of regrowth (new shoot emergence from rhizomes after application) and because tillering and plant emergence are more nearly complete at application time.

Inhibition and subsequent recovery of net CO2 exchange (NCE) by single leaves of 53 grass species of the subfamilies Festucoideae, Panicoideae, and Eragrostoideae was monitored following limited root uptake of atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine]. Rates of NCE recovery were correlated with rates of 14C-atrazine metabolism in leaf sections of festucoid and panicoid grasses but not eragrostoid grasses. Rates of NCE recovery among the nine festucoid and 12 eragrostoid species tested did not exceed 0.2 and 1.1 mg CO2 per dm2 per hr/hr, respectively, whereas for the 31 panicoid species, it ranged from 0.2 to 2.4 mg CO2 per dm2 per hr/hr. Selected species exhibiting NCE recovery rates exceeding 1.2 mg CO2 per dm2 per hr/hr were tolerant to 1.0 kg/ha preemergence and 1.25 kg/ha postemergence atrazine applications. These panicoid species included a number of common weed species belonging to the genera Digitaria, Panicum, and Setaria, as well as species belonging to Bracharia, Pennisetum, Sorghum, and Zea. Unchanged 14C-atrazine accounted for 11.3 to 92.7% of the total 14C-radioactivity extracted from 14C-atrazine infiltrated leaf sections following an 8-hr incubation period. N-dealkylation, hydroxylation, and peptide conjugation occurred in all species, although rates of these metabolic pathways varied widely among species. Recovery of NCE was correlated with formation on the glutathione-atrazine conjugate, and conjugation was the major detoxification pathway in species exhibiting tolerance to atrazine.

Field research was conducted at Arlington, WI, and Janesville, WI, in 1986 and 1987 to evaluate the effect of conventional-tillage, chisel plow, and no-till systems on the density and control of annual weed species in solid-seeded soybean. Common lambsquarters densities were not greatly influenced by tillage systems, but redroot pigweed densities were generally highest in the chisel plow system. Conventional tillage always had greater velvetleaf densities than no-till and no-till always had greater giant foxtail densities than conventional tillage. Giant foxtail and redroot pigweed became more difficult to control when tillage was reduced, while velvetleaf became less of a problem. This response was not observed with all herbicide treatments evaluated and several herbicide treatments provided excellent weed control. Soybean yield was not affected by tillage systems under weed-free conditions and differences in soybean yield appeared to be due to differences in weed control.

Weed control practices affected the weed seed content of the soil, weed seedling populations, and corn and soybean yields in two 4-yr field experiments. When the initial weed seed density was high, giant foxtail seed numbers in soil declined rapidly under weed-free conditions. Changes in seed densities when initial densities were low varied over years. Mechanical and chemical control treatments had variable effects on weed seed numbers over the course of the experiment. Weed seed numbers and weed densities were sometimes greater if herbicides were banded, but crop yields were similar to full-rate herbicides in both experiments in all years. When the initial density was low, giant foxtail seed numbers in soil increased over the course of the experiment regardless of the weed control treatment. Seed densities of broadleaf species decreased under the same conditions. Also, when initial weed densities were low, weed control and crop yields were less sensitive to weed control practices than at high weed densities. Weather factors that influenced treatment efficacy had a major affect on weed populations and crop yield responses to the weed control treatments over years. The interactions of weed control practices, weed populations, and crop yields were complex. Initial weed density and species composition interacted with weed control treatments and weather patterns to generate the results observed.

Previous research has shown that both the density and spatial pattern of wheat have an influence on crop growth and weed suppression, but it is not clear what degree of uniformity is necessary to achieve major improvements in weed suppression. Field experiments were performed over 3 yr to investigate the effects of crop density and different spatial distributions on weed suppression. The spatial pattern of spring wheat sown in five patterns and three densities in small weed-infested plots were analyzed with the use of digitized photographs of field plots to describe the locations of individual wheat plants as x and y coordinates. We used a simple quantitative measure, Morisita's index, to measure the degree of spatial uniformity. Increased crop density resulted in reduced weed biomass and increased crop biomass every year, but crop pattern had significant effects on weed and crop biomass in the first year only. Weather conditions during the second and third years were very dry, resulting in very low weed biomass production. We hypothesize that water deficiency increased the importance of belowground relative to aboveground competition by reducing biomass production, making competition more size symmetric, and reducing the effect of crop spatial pattern on weed growth. The results indicate that increased crop density in cereals can play an important role in increasing the crop's competitive advantage over weeds, and that spatial uniformity maximizes the effect of density when low resource levels or abiotic stress do not limit total biomass production.

Resistance to herbicides in the most important weeds threatens the sustainability of California rice. Weed-competitive rice cultivars could be a low-cost and safe nonchemical addition to an integrated weed management program. Trade-offs between competitiveness and productivity and inconsistent trait expression under weedy and weed-free conditions could complicate the breeding of competitive rice cultivars. A 2-year competition experiment was conducted in the greenhouse involving eight rice cultivars and two weed competition regimes (presence or absence of late watergrass) to examine the effects of rice weed-suppressive ability and tolerance to weed competition (weed tolerance) on rice yield. Competition reduced average rice yield from 32 to 48%, and watergrass biomass from 44 to 77%. Path analysis suggested that enhancing rice weed-suppressive ability and weed tolerance while minimizing possible productivity trade-offs should promote early (12 d after seeding) growth and light-capture traits followed by moderate growth rates before heading and a vigorous grain filling period. Crop growth rate (CGR) after heading was a relevant determinant of yield (direct path: 0.82, P < 0.01) and correlated (r = 0.30, P < 0.01) with weed tolerance. Late biomass accumulation was negatively correlated with harvest index and CGR during ripening (r = −0.46, P < 0.01); thus, late-season competitiveness can lower productivity. Rice traits conferring competitiveness were correlated across weed competition regimes (r = 0.36–0.81, P < 0.01). However, significant cultivar-by-competition and cultivar-by-year interactions suggest that selection efficiency would be greater when traits are identified under competition and in different environments. This study relates to the phenotypic expression of traits for competitiveness. Breeding competitive cultivars will require additional knowledge on trait heritability, genetic correlations with competitiveness, and on the effects of the environment upon gene expression.

The weed science discipline has changed significantly since 1970. New herbicides have been introduced, many herbicide-resistant weeds have been documented, herbicide-resistant crops have been introduced, federal laws affecting pesticides and weeds have been modified, the number of companies discovering and developing herbicides has been drastically reduced, basic studies on weed biology have received more emphasis, and integrated methods of controlling weeds with nonchemical as well as chemical methods have received increasing attention.

Growth of Douglas fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] was increased by controlling grasses and broadleaf herbs with eight herbicide regimes during the first 3 yr after planting on a well-drained moist site in the Oregon Coast Range. The greatest growth occurred if weeds were controlled in the same growing season that tree seedlings were transplanted to the field; smaller increments came from second- and third-year weed control. Growth increases attributable to early weed control continued through the fifth year, indicating that conditions during establishment strongly influenced later growth. Plots with no herbaceous vegetation had more available soil water than those with competing vegetation, and tree seedlings on these plots experienced less water stress. Irrigation in the third year increased stem diameter of seedlings in that year but had no effect thereafter. Increases in average seedling stem volume at 5 yr after transplanting were linearly related (r2 = 0.77) to the difference in observed xylem potential during the first three growing seasons after transplanting and the xylem potential at which photosynthesis ceased, −2 MPa.

An indigenous, host-specific, pathogenic fungus that parasitizes winged waterprimrose [Jussiaea decurrens (Walt.) DC.] is endemic in the rice growing region of Arkansas. The fungus was isolated and identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc. f. sp. jussiaeae (CGJ). It is highly specific for parasitism of winged waterprimrose and not parasitic on creeping waterprimrose (J. repens L. var. glabrescens Ktze.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), or 4 other crops and 13 other weeds. The fungus was physiologically distinct from C. gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc. f. sp. aeschynomene (CGA), an endemic anthracnose pathogen of northern jointvetch [Aeschynomene virginica (L.) B.S.P.], as indicated by cross inoculations of both weeds. Culture in the laboratory and inoculation of winged waterprimrose in greenhouse, growth chamber and field experiments indicated that the pathogen was stable, specific, and virulent in a wide range of environments. The pathogen yielded large quantities of spores in liquid culture. It is suitable for control of winged waterprimrose. Winged waterprimrose and northern jointvetch were controlled in greenhouse and field tests by application of spore mixtures of CGJ and CGA at concentrations of 1 to 2 million spores/ml of each fungus in 94 L/ha of water; the fungi did not damage rice or nontarget crops.

The effect of postharvest storage temperature (–15, 5, 20, and 30 C) on seed dormancy of red rice [Oryza sativa L. ‘strawhulled (SH)’], an annual species, was studied. Intact and dehulled (by hand) seeds were dormant at harvest. Intact seeds were nondormant (greater than 90% germination at 30 C) after dry storage at 20 or 30 C for 4 weeks after harvest. In intact seeds stored dry at 5 C, the degree of dormancy was dependent upon postharvest exposure time at 20 C prior to storage. Dormancy of intact seeds decreased at 5 C as this initial postharvest exposure to 20 C was increased from 2 to 7 days. This effect of initial 20 C exposure was independent of seed moisture content (11 to 12%). After dry storage of intact seeds at 5 C, dehulling promoted germination. Germination of such dehulled seeds increased with increasing storage time at 5 C up to 11 months when complete germination occurred. The response of seeds dehulled immediately after dry storage at 5 C was independent of prior exposure time (2 to 7 days) at 20 C. Storage at −15 C prevented all forms of dry-afterripening for 1 yr.

The establishment and management of nine cover crops in Kentucky production systems were evaluated in field experiments over a 2-yr period. ‘Wheeler’ rye, ‘Barsoy’ barley, and ‘Tyler’ wheat cereal grains produced greater biomass (180 to 260 g/m2) than the pasture species tall fescue, creeping red fescue, and white clover (55 to 110 g/m2). ‘Kentucky 31’ tall fescue, creeping red fescue, and white clover proved most difficult to control, and significant regrowth occurred regardless of herbicide or rate applied. HOE-39866 (1.7 kg ai/ha) was effective in rapidly controlling all cover crops except tall fescue by 30 days after application. Sethoxydim and fluazifop (0.4 and 0.3 kg ai/ha, respectively) effectively controlled the cereals and two ryegrass species. Glyphosate applied at 1.1 and 2.2 kg ai/ha was also effective, while 0.6 kg ai/ha controlled only cereal grain growth adequately. After chemical control, pasture grass plots contained fewest weeds/m2 with some reductions likely due to density and regrowth of the sods. Cover crops were effective in suppressing weed growth at 45 days after chemical control. However, significant weed growth existed in all cover crop plots by 60 days after kill. Row crop establishment increased linearly with increasing glyphosate rate. Cereal grain covers provided the most compatible planting situations for greatest seedling establishment, with rye and wheat providing greatest weed suppression. Generally, increased weed suppression provided by a cover crop was accompanied by reduced row crop establishment, with greatest reductions observed in pasture grass plots. Cucumber was most easily established while snap pea was most difficult.

The interference and seed production potential of pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L. # IPOLA) with conventional-row (1 m) and narrow-row (20 cm) ‘Hill’ soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] was studied for 2 yr. Pitted morningglory densities were 3.3, 10, 20, and 40 plants/m2 while soybean densities were 23 and 50 plants/m2 in conventional and narrow rows, respectively. Pitted morningglory interfered with soybean growth earlier in conventional-row soybeans than in narrow-row soybeans due to its rapid increase in leaf area index (LAI) and biomass from 4 to 8 weeks after emergence. Soybeans were competitive with pitted morningglory until the soybean reproductive stage began at 7 weeks after emergence. Pitted morningglory reduced soybean yields 17% more in a dry year than in a wet year. Yield of narrow-row soybeans was equal or greater than yield of conventional-row soybeans at all pitted morningglory densities. Conventional-row soybean yields were reduced an average of 42 and 81% at pitted morningglory densities of 3.3 and 40/m2, respectively, but yield of narrow-row soybeans was reduced only 6 and 62% at equivalent densities. Pitted morningglory grown without soybean interference produced an average of 52.3 million seeds/ha. Total seed production of pitted morningglory growing in soybeans increased as pitted morningglory density increased and was greater in conventional rows than in narrow rows. Narrow rows reduced total seed production an average of 90 and 68% at pitted morningglory densities of 3.3 and 40/m2, respectively.

Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench. ‘G-623 GBR’] bioassays indicated that shoot growth was more susceptible to metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] and more responsive to the antidote CGA-92194 {α-[(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl-methoxy)-imino] benzeneacetonitrile} than root growth. Seed treatment with CGA-92194 increased seedling shoot tolerance to metolachlor approximately tenfold. CGA-92194 seed treatment enhanced shoot absorption of 14C-metolachlor approximately twofold. Metolachlor was initially metabolized to the glutathione conjugate in untreated shoots and those treated with CGA-92194. However, CGA-92194 seed treatment caused accelerated metolachlor metabolism in the shoot, decreasing metolachlor content and increasing formation of the glutathione conjugate. Cyometrinil {(Z)-α[(cyanomethoxy)imino] benzeneacetonitrile}, flurazole [phenylmethyl 2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-5-thiazolecarboxylate], naphthalic anhydride (1H,3H-naphtho[1,8-cd]-pyran-1,3-dione), and dichlormid (2,2-dichloro-N,N-di-2-propenylacetamide) also protected sorghum from metolachlor injury and enhanced metolachlor absorption and metabolism. The degree of protection conferred by a particular antidote was correlated with its ability to enhance metabolism of metolachlor in shoot tissue. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the above antidotes protect sorghum from metolachlor injury by inducing rapid detoxification of metolachlor through conjugation with glutathione.

Growth and morphological characteristics of four weed and two crop species were analyzed to determine how small-seeded weeds can compete with large-seeded crops despite the initial size disadvantage. Small-seeded weeds had higher relative growth rates because of increased percentages of biomass devoted to leaves. This morphological scheme was achieved primarily through a reduction in the percentage of biomass devoted to roots. Yet, small-seeded weeds were able to develop larger mean plant root lengths as a result of having both roots of smaller diameter and higher rates of root length increase.

Degradation of 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropyl-s-triazine (atrazine) was studied in the 0 to 9, 14 to 24, and 36 to 48-inch depths of Sharpsburg silty clay loam and Keith silt loam soils. The effects of moisture, temperature, and microorganisms on degradation were observed. Atrazine was degraded two to three times faster in the topsoils than in the subsoils. Each 10 C temperature increase from 15 to 35 C caused the degradation rate to increase two to three times in these soils. Increasing the moisture content of the soils from 0.4 to 0.8 field capacity caused 14CO2 evolution from chain-labeled atrazine-14C treated soils to increase zero to six times. At 25 C and 0.8 field capacity, 100 to 194 atrazine molecules were detoxified for each molecule evolved as 14CO2 from chain-labeled atrazine. Solution culture studies showed cleavage of the side chain and ring of atrazine-14C except in the 14 to 24 and 36 to 48-inch depths of Keith silt loam.

Plant invasions that arise from human introductions of new species to a region, or from range expansion of some native plant species, can profoundly affect biodiversity and alter the structure and function of ecosystems. Although preventive strategies may be an effective way to limit plant invasions, they are difficult to achieve because adequate descriptions of biological and environmental characteristics are often lacking, and truly predictive models of invasive biology have been elusive. On the basis of a history of repeated plant introductions and the absence of a general predictive theory, it may be best to assume that plant invasions will continue. This paper explores ways to empirically study and to predict plant invasions through a study of the invasion process. Several approaches are explored, such as species demography, DNA analysis, and geographic information system reconstructions, to characterize source and satellite populations and factors that influence the spread of these populations.

A survey was made in the United States to determine the extent of the infestations of leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) and other weeds of economic importance in the Euphorbiaceae. From introductions about 100 yr ago, leafy spurge is now found in 458 counties in 26 states from coast to coast. The infestations are out of control in some states, and biological control is mentioned as a possible solution to the problem.

The physical adsorption of chemical substances onto surfaces in soils or inside plants has been of considerable interest with respect to the fate of herbicides in soils, the selectivity of growth regulator herbicides, and even with respect to the toxic activities of growth regulators in plants. Comparative measurements of the adsorption of various herbicides are limited in number and scope. Experiments are presented here which attempt to measure the relative adsorptive qualities of various chlorinated phenoxyacetic acids, and to provide some evidence concerning the bearing of adsorption on herbicidal action.
