The interaction between diclofop-methyl {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] methyl propanoate} and 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] was evaluated. Foliar applications of the two herbicides in a tank mixture were antagonistic with respect to wild oat (Avena fatua L.) control. Application of mixtures of the two herbicides to wild oat roots resulted in an additive herbicidal effect. The acid form of 2,4-D was determined to be the component of the 2,4-D formulation that reduced the toxicity of foliar-applied diclofop-methyl to wild oat. Analysis of diclofop-methyl solutions with and without added 2,4-D revealed no degradation products of dichlofop-methyl, nor any evidence of complexing between diclofop-methyl and 2,4-D. Addition of 2,4-D to the diclofop-methyl spray solution did not affect diclofop-methyl spray retention by, or penetration into, wild oat leaves. Movement of radioactivity to roots and to shoot apices following application of 14C-diclofop-methyl to wild oat leaves was reduced by addition of 2,4-D to the treatment solution. Deesterification of diclofop-methyl was inhibited by 2,4-D. The accumulation of diclofop-methyl in these wild oat leaves resulted in membrane damage and leaf necrosis. Symplastic movement of the des-methyl acid, diclofop, to sensitive meristematic areas was reduced. As insufficient toxicant reached meristematic areas to permanently interrupt meristematic activity, the wild oat plants were able to outgrow the contact damage to their leaves.

Palmer amaranth is native to the United States, but was discovered in 2015 in Brazil. Palmer amaranth populations in Brazil were very difficult to control using glyphosate, which resulted in many changes to standard weed management practices. A genotyping assay was used to confirm that the population detected in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, was correctly identified as Palmer amaranth and that it was not tall waterhemp. Greenhouse dose–response curves and shikimate accumulation assays showed that the Brazilian population was highly resistant to glyphosate, with an LD50 value (3,982 g glyphosate ha−1) more than twice the typical use rates and very little shikimate accumulation at 1 mM glyphosate concentrations in a leaf-disk assay. The Brazilian population was also resistant to sulfonylurea and imidazolinone acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor herbicides. The resistance mechanisms in the Brazilian population were identified as increased EPSPS gene copy number for glyphosate resistance (between 50- and 179-fold relative EPSPS gene copy number increase) and two different alleles for target-site mutations in the ALS gene (W574L and S653N). These results confirm the introduction of Palmer amaranth to Brazil using a genetic marker for species identification, as well as resistance to glyphosate and ALS inhibitors.

Experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy, absorption, and translocation of glyphosate, glufosinate, and imazethapyr with selected weed species. In the greenhouse glyphosate, glufosinate, and imazethapyr were applied at 0.25, 0.5, and 1 times their label rates of 1,121, 410, and 70 g ha−1, respectively, on 10- to 15-cm black nightshade, common waterhemp, eastern black nightshade, field bindweed, giant ragweed, ivyleaf morningglory, prairie cupgrass, velvetleaf, and yellow nutsedge. Glyphosate applied at the 1-time rate caused injury greater than or similar to injury from the 1-time rate of glufosinate or imazethapyr on black nightshade, common waterhemp, eastern black nightshade, field bindweed, giant ragweed, prairie cupgrass, and velvetleaf. The 1-time rate of glufosinate injured ivyleaf morningglory and yellow nutsedge more than did the 1-time rate of glyphosate or imazethapyr. Under field conditions glyphosate caused the greatest injury to common waterhemp, prairie cupgrass, and velvetleaf across plant growth stages. Giant ragweed and ivyleaf morningglory injury was more dependent on growth stage, with the 15- and 30-cm growth stages more susceptible to glyphosate than to glufosinate or imazethapyr. Differential response of these weed species may be caused by differences in herbicide translocation. Glyphosate was translocated more in both giant ragweed and ivyleaf morningglory, and these species were injured more by glyphosate than by glufosinate or imazethapyr at the larger growth stages.

Low recoveries of total applied 14C in translocation studies and erratic control of hemp dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum L.) in the field showed a need for a balance-sheet study of absorption, translocation, and metabolism of 14C-2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) acetic acid] and 14C-glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine]. Total recovery of 14C-herbicides applied to hemp dogbane in the laboratory was 97% for 2,4-D and 105% for glyphosate. Of the 14C recovered after 12 days in the hemp dogbane, 34 to 55% was parent-2,4-D after 2,4-D treatment, and 93 to 96% was parent glyphosate after glyphosate treatment. Only negligible amounts of 14C were lost via volatilization or evolution as 14CO2. A broadcast treatment with unlabeled herbicide did not significantly affect subsequent absorption, translocation, or metabolism of either herbicide. Total herbicide absorbed and translocated out of the treated area of the leaf generally increased during the subsequent 12 days for 2,4-D but only 3 days for glyphosate. A greater percentage of the total applied 2,4-D (31 vs. 14%) and glyphosate (14 vs. 8%) was translocated from upper rather than lower leaves of hemp dogbane, respectively. Higher temperatures (30 vs. 25 C) resulted in greater translocation of glyphosate (39 vs. 18%) but not 2,4-D (35 vs. 39%). Higher light intensities resulted in greater accumulations of 2,4-D into roots and of glyphosate into untreated areas of the treated leaf. Autoradiographs showed that both herbicides moved through hemp dogbane in a typical symplastic pattern and accumulated in roots and new leaves.

The interaction of reduced rates of bentazon, chlorimuron, imazaquin, and imazethapyr with cultivation for broadleaf weed control in soybeans was investigated in field experiments conducted at three sites in Missouri in 1987 and 1988. Single reduced-rate herbicide applications provided soybean yields equal to full rates although visual weed control was slightly lower. Sequential applications of all four herbicides at reduced rates provided weed control and soybean yields equal to full-rate applications. The number of velvetleaf plants m−2 and seeds plant−1 were not influenced by herbicide, herbicide rate, or application timing. Cultivation improved weed control and soybean yield and decreased late-season weed populations and seed production.

A waterhemp population from a native-grass seed production field in Nebraska was no longer effectively controlled by 2,4-D. Seed was collected from the site, and dose-response studies were conducted to determine if this population was herbicide resistant. In the greenhouse, plants from the putative resistant and a susceptible waterhemp population were treated with 0, 18, 35, 70, 140, 280, 560, 1,120, or 2,240 g ae ha−1 2,4-D. Visual injury estimates (I) were made 28 d after treatment (DAT), and plants were harvested and dry weights (GR) measured. The putative resistant population was approximately 10-fold more resistant to 2,4-D (R:S ratio) than the susceptible population based on both I50 (50% visual injury) and GR50 (50% reduction in dry weight) values. The R:S ratio increased to 19 and 111 as the data were extrapolated to I90 and GR90 estimates, respectively. GR50 doses of 995 g ha−1 for the resistant and 109 g ha−1 for the susceptible populations were estimated. A field dose-response study was conducted at the suspected resistant site with 2,4-D doses of 0, 140, 280, 560, 1,120, 2,240, 4,480, 8,960, 17,920, and 35,840 g ha−1. At 28 DAT, visual injury estimates were 44% in plots treated with 35,840 g ha−1. Some plants treated with the highest rate recovered and produced seed. Plants from the resistant and susceptible populations were also treated with 0, 9, 18, 35, 70, 140, 280, 560, or 1,120 g ae ha−1 dicamba in greenhouse bioassays. The 2,4-D resistant population was threefold less sensitive to dicamba based on I50 estimates but less than twofold less sensitive based on GR50 estimates. The synthetic auxins are the sixth mechanism-of-action herbicide group to which waterhemp has evolved resistance.

There is an ever-larger need for designing an integrated weed management (IWM) program largely because of the increase in glyphosate-resistant weeds, not only in the United States but also worldwide. An IWM program involves a combination of various methods (cultural, mechanical, biological, genetic, and chemical) for effective and economical weed control (Swanton and Weise 1991). One of the first steps in designing an IWM program is to identify the critical period for weed control (CPWC), defined as a period in the crop growth cycle during which weeds must be controlled to prevent crop yield losses (Zimdahl 1988).

Intensive surveys were conducted in 2 fields in eastern Nebraska to determine the spatial stability of common sunflower, velvetleaf, green and yellow foxtail, and hemp dogbane over 4 yr (1992 to 1995). The 1st field was planted to soybean in 1992 and corn in 1993, 1994, and 1995. The 2nd field was planted to corn in 1992 and 1994 and soybean in 1993 and 1995. Weed density was sampled prior to postemergence herbicide application at approximately 800 locations per year in each field on a regular 7 m grid. The same locations were sampled every year. Weed density at locations between the sample sites was determined by linear triangulation interpolation. Weed seedling distribution was significantly aggregated, with large weed-free areas in both fields. Common sunflower, velvetleaf, and hemp dogbane patches were very persistent in diameter in the east-west and north-south directions and in location and area over 4 yr in the 1st field. Foxtail distribution and density continuously increased in each of the 4 yr in the first field and decreased in the 2nd field. A geographic information system was used to overlay maps from each year for a species. This showed that 36% of the sampled area was continuously free of common sunflower, 62.5% was free of hemp dogbane, and 11.5% was free of velvetleaf in the 1st field, but only 1% was free of velvetleaf in the 2nd field. The persistence of broadleaf weed patches suggests that weed seedling distributions mapped in one year are good predictors of future seedling distributions. Improved and more efficient sampling methods are needed.

Available literature indicates that relatively few agricultural leaders and farmers became interested in weeds as a problem before 1200 A.D. or even 1500 A.D. For many centuries, weed control was mostly incidental to tillage for seedbed preparation and growing of crops and to growing and cutting or pasturing of thickly planted crops. Occasional references in literature previous to 1900 mentioned use of mechanical devices and a few inorganic herbicides specifically for weed control.

State weed laws directed at control of plant diseases were enacted during 1721 to 1766, but weed and seed laws involving weeds directly were not enacted until 100 to 200 years later. Only a few extension type publications on weeds were issued in the United States and Canada between 1860 and 1900. There was a rapid increase in such publications after 1900. Research with inorganic chemicals as herbicides was begun in the 1890's in Europe and in a few states and provinces, and was increased at a rapid pace until the early 1940's. New developments in mechanical and biological control of weeds increased steadily during the same period. However, weed control remained a relatively minor phase of agronomy, botany, horticulture, agricultural engineering, and plant physiology until the early 1950's.

About 10 years after the discovery of (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D) in 1942–1944, the much increased interest of scientists, federal and state governments, industrial companies, and the general public had begun to bear fruit. The word “weed” or “weeds” began to appear in the titles of college courses and extension specialists. Weed conferences had been organized in six regions of the United States and Canada and in 10 states.

The first meeting of the Weed Science Society of America was held in 1956 and Weed Science was adopted as its official journal. The number of herbicides in general use in the United States and Canada increased from 15 in 1940 to 25 in 1950, and to 100 in 1969. The total support for weed research in 1962 in the United States was six times that in 1950. The number of full-time research and extension workers or their equivalents in part-time workers had increased 20-fold and 13-fold, respectively, over the number in 1940.

The rate of advancement in the art and science of weed control has increased so rapidly that the progress in each of the recent brief periods 1941 to 1968, 1901 to 1940, and 1800 to 1900 is considered greater than that in all previous periods, beginning about 6000 B.C.

Thirteen biotypes of rigid ryegrass were screened for trifluralin resistance. From these, the two most resistant biotypes, SLR 31 and SLR 10, were chosen for further studies involving exposure to other dinitroanilines, mitosis-inhibiting herbicides and 14C-trifluralin. SLR 31, and SLR 10 exhibited an approximate 10-fold reduced sensitivity to trifluralin in comparison to susceptible biotypes. Resistance to five other dinitroaniline herbicides was observed, with reduced sensitivity varying from 32-fold for ethalfluralin to 2.5-fold for isopropalin. The resistance in rigid ryegrass to other herbicides and drugs that affect mitosis were tested. Resistance comparable to that of trifluralin was recorded for the herbicides terbutol and DCPA, while low levels of cross-resistance to amiprophosmethyl was present. Trifluralin affected mitotic indices at a much lower level in the susceptible biotypes than in the resistant biotypes. No differences in the uptake and translocation of 14C-trifluralin were observed between resistant and susceptible biotypes. Most of the 14C detected in the plant material was in the root tissue. A small level of 14C was detected in the seeds, and no substantial increases were noted in coleoptile tissue. The resistance spectra in SLR 31 and SLR 10 were phenotypically similar to those occurring in an intermediate trifluralin-resistant goosegrass and trifluralin-resistant green foxtail.

Current weed demography models were reviewed to evaluate how the effects of cultural practices on weed dynamics were integrated into the models and to suggest possible ways to improve the simulation of cropping system effects. Several models were chosen to illustrate the interactions between cropping systems and weed dynamics. The first one described the structure of the weed life cycle. The second model integrated the effects of a wide set of cultural practices; the comparison of this example with other models suggested how the integration of cropping system effects could be improved. The last two models introduced the interactions of cultural practices with intraplot weed variability, either spatial variability of weed densities or genetic and phenotypic variability within weed populations. This review indicates some ways to make weed population models more comprehensive, robust, and accurate in order to improve their contribution to the evaluation and management of cropping systems.

Weed emergence and viable weed seed numbers were determined in field plots during a 5-yr period where reseeding was prevented. Known numbers of seeds of seven weed species were added to the native seed population at the beginning of the study. Plots were nontilled or tilled to depths of 0, 5, 10, and 15 cm early in the spring of each year. Velvetleaf, spurred anoda, hemp sesbania, morningglory species, and pigweed species emergence was significantly greater from the nontilled plots during the first year after seeds were added to the native seed population. Tillage, regardless of depth, reduced weed emergence during the first year where seeds were added to the plots but had no effect on emergence from plots where no seeds were added. Tillage during the second through the fifth year did not affect emergence regardless of the addition of seeds. of the 5-yr emergence totals, 61 to 88% of all weeds in all plots emerged during the first year and 9 to 23% emerged during the second year. The 5-yr decline rate for emergence of all weeds was exponential. Viable seeds of prickly sida, spurges, and pigweeds in the nontilled plots declined from 590, 1531, and 4346 m−2, respectively, to zero by the third year. Tillage did not affect the decline. However, weed emergence in the field indicated that a few (1.0 to 5.6 m−2) seeds of those weeds were still viable after 3 yr. In nontilled plots, many recently added seeds were on or near the soil surface and germinated during the first year. Tillage moved many seeds to sites that were unfavorable for germination and emergence during the first year.

Common cocklebur, jimsonweed, and velvetleaf were grown with soybeans in the field to determine how soybean interference affects weed canopy architecture. Common cocklebur had more leaves within the soybean canopy than jimsonweed or velvetleaf. At the end of the season, common cocklebur leaf area was distributed evenly below and above the top of the soybean canopy, while nearly all the jimsonweed and velvetleaf leaf area was above the soybean canopy. Common cocklebur exhibited more shade tolerance than jimsonweed or velvetleaf by also maintaining leaves in the shade within the soybean canopy. Differences among these weeds in leaf distribution within the soybean canopy were not related to differences in abscission of the lower leaves but to a differential response of lower axillary buds to soybean shading. Growth from lower axillary buds in jimsonweed and velvetleaf was strongly inhibited by soybean interference, but interference had little effect on lower axillary bud growth in common cocklebur. Axillary bud growth in the lower canopies of both common cocklebur and soybeans, and their similarity in height, caused these plants to compete for the same aboveground niche. However, common cocklebur had more extensive axillary growth along the lower stem than soybeans, which may allow it to compete for resources in this niche more aggressively than soybeans. Velvetleaf and jimsonweed did not share the same aboveground niche with soybeans due to the placement of their leaves above rather than within the soybean canopy. The lower branching characteristics and apparent shade tolerance of common cocklebur may be important factors in the superior competitive ability with soybeans compared to jimsonweed and velvetleaf.

Most of the elongation responsible for barnyardgrass seedling emergence occurred in the first internode. The developing foliar leaves within the coleoptile were the consistent site of EPTC injury. Injury symptoms were never observed in the roots. The first internodes of EPTC-injured seedlings seemed to function normally, although they were sometimes kinked into zig-zag patterns. This kinking was a secondary rather than a direct effect of EPTC injury. Seed germination was not affected by EPTC. Injury occurred after germination. Exposing the seed and primary root to EPTC did not lead to injury, whereas exposing the shoot or only the coleoptile did. It was concluded that leaf tissue is the main site of EPTC uptake in barnyardgrass as well as the prime site of injury.

Tall morningglory [Ipomoea purpurea (L.) Roth.], pitted morningglory (I. lacunosa L.), ivyleaf morningglory [I. hederacea (L.) Jacq.] and entireleaf morningglory (I. hederacea var. integruiscula Gray) were compared for their competitive ability with cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) at weed densities of 4, 8, 16 and 32 weeds/15 m of row. Tall morningglory was the most competitive with yield reductions of as much as 88% at 32 weeds/15 m. The higher populations of tall morningglory also significantly reduced cotton populations, mechanical harvesting efficiency and lint percentage below that in the controls. Pitted morningglory densities twice that of tall morningglory were required to produce cotton responses similar to those induced by tall morningglory. Ivyleaf morningglory and entireleaf morningglory were almost identical in their competitive potentials and were less competitive than the other species evaluated. Their competitive ability was greatly reduced by disease. Competition from morningglories did not consistently affect cotton fiber micronaire, fiber length or strength.

Giant ragweed is a competitive, allergenic weed that persists in agricultural fields and early successional sites. Field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of seed size and seed burial depth on giant ragweed emergence and seed demise. In a seedling emergence experiment, small (< 4.8 mm in diameter) and large (> 6.6 mm in diameter) seeds were buried 0, 5, 10, and 20 cm in fall 1997, and weed emergence was monitored over the next seven growing seasons. A generalized linear mixed model fit to the cumulative emergence data showed that maximum emergence for both seed sizes occurred at the 5-cm burial depth, where probability of emergence was 19% for small seeds and 49% for large seeds. Emergence probability at the 10-cm burial depth was 9% for small seeds and 30% for large seeds, and no seedlings emerged from the 20-cm burial depth. The model predicted that ≥ 98% of total cumulative emergence was completed after four growing seasons for large seeds buried 5 cm, five growing seasons for small seeds buried 5 cm and large seeds buried 10 cm, and seven growing seasons for small seeds buried 10 cm. Seed size and burial treatment effects on seed demise were tested in a second experiment using seed packets. Rates of seed demise were inversely proportional to burial depth, and the percentage of viable seeds remaining after 4 yr ranged from 0% on the soil surface to 19% at the 20-cm burial depth. Some seeds recovered from the 20-cm burial depth were viable after 9 yr of burial. These results, coupled with previous research, suggest that seed size polymorphism facilitates giant ragweed adaptation across habitats and that a combination of no-tillage cropping practices, habitat modification, and timely weed control measures can reduce its active seed bank in agricultural fields by 90% or more after 4 yr.

The resistance of four populations of slender foxtail from England to chlorotoluron, pendimethalin, and the methyl ester of diclofop was studied in whole-plant spray assays. Two populations showed cross-resistance to all three herbicides while a third showed resistance to chlorotoluron only. Resistance, although not absolute, was sufficient to cause substantial reductions in herbicide performance at recommended field doses. Resistant (Peldon) and susceptible (Rothamsted) populations also were assessed for resistance to six dinitroaniline herbicides in a petri dish test in which the effects on shoot development were measured. The degree of resistance of the Peldon population varied considerably among herbicides, with greatest resistance to pendimethalin, whereas sensitivity to ethalfluralin, isopropalin, and trifluralin was similar to that of the Rothamsted standard. Differential response to butralin and oryzalin was smaller than to pendimethalin. The large difference between populations in their response to pendimethalin and trifluralin was confirmed in a pot experiment.

Field experiments were conducted in 1979, 1980, and 1981 to determine the level of interference five broadleaf weed species exert on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Weed species studied were common cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr. ♯ XANST), common ragweed (Ambrosia artemesiifolia L. ♯ AMBEL), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. ♯ CHEAL), sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. ♯ CASOB), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L. ♯ AMARE). The following soybean seed yield reductions were observed with a density of 16 weeds/10-m row: redroot pigweed 22%, common lambsquarters 15%, common ragweed 12%, and sicklepod 5%, respectively. At a density of 8 weeds/10-m row, common cocklebur reduced soybean yield 11%. No single weed growth parameter predicted soybean seed yield reduction for all weed species. Soybean height was reduced by sicklepod competition; was not affected by competition from common lambsquarters, common ragweed, or common cocklebur; and was increased in the presence of redroot pigweed at 12 weeks after planting, when measured 30 cm from the weeds. Leaf area of soybean was higher at greater distances from the weed for all weed species. The range of soybean leaf area reductions occasioned by proximity to individual weed species corresponded fairly well with differences in soybean yield reduction.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of temperature and water potential on water uptake, germination, and emergence of large crabgrass in order to predict emergence in the field. Water uptake of seed soaked in polyethylene glycol solutions of 0 to −1400 kPa underwent an initial imbibition phase followed by a lag phase and subsequent increase in water content when radicles emerged from the seed. Maximum germination at 15 C was 12% at 0 kPa and 60% at 25 C at 0 to −200 kPa osmotic potential. In the growth chamber, large crabgrass emergence from soil began 2 to 3 d after planting at 30 or 35 C and within 9 to 10 d at 15 C. Maximum emergence of 77 % occurred at 25 C and at a soil water potential of −30 kPa. Emergence percentage decreased as water potential decreased or as temperature increased or decreased. A logistic equation described emergence of large crabgrass at each combination of temperature and soil water potential at which emergence occurred, and a predictive model was developed and validated by field data. In the field, there was little or no emergence at soil temperatures below 15 C or water potentials below −50 to −60 kPa. The model predicted the time of onset of large crabgrass emergence and the time to reach maximum emergence to within 2 to 4 d of that recorded in field experiments. The model also predicted the correct number of flushes of emergence occurring in the field in three of four experiments.

Unintentional herbicide resistance gene stacking in canola may alter the sensitivity of volunteers to herbicides of alternative modes of action commonly used for their control. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to investigate the response of three single-herbicide–resistant (HR) cultivars (glyphosate, glufosinate, imidazolinone), one non-HR cultivar, and seven multiple (double or triple)–HR experimental lines to 2,4-D (amine and ester), MCPA ester, and metribuzin applied at the two- to three-leaf stage and of one non-HR and four HR cultivars (glyphosate, glufosinate, imidazolinone, bromoxynil) to 2,4-D amine applied at two growth stages (two- to three-leaf stage and five- to six-leaf stage). All canola cultivars or lines treated at the two- to three-leaf stage responded similarly to increasing doses of each of the three herbicides. At the five- to six-leaf stage, however, the bromoxynil HR cultivar was less sensitive to 2,4-D than the other cultivars. The results of this study suggest that canola with multiple-herbicide–resistance traits does not differ from cultivars that are non-HR or single HR in its sensitivity to herbicides commonly used to control volunteers. All volunteers, whether non-HR, single HR, or multiple HR, should be treated when plants are most sensitive to herbicides (two- to four-leaf stage) to reduce their interference against crops and their perpetuation of gene flow.
