Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the effect of several environmental factors on seed germination and seedling emergence of the invasive weed Pueraria lobata (kudzu). Germination occurred over a range of alternating temperatures from 15/6 to 35/25 C. Seed germinated equally well in alternating light/darkness and continuous darkness. At all temperature regimes, percentage germination was much greater for hand-scarified seed (95 to 100%) than for nonscarified seed (7 to 17%), indicating that P. lobata seed possesses physical dormancy. Germination exceeded 51% in solutions with pH 5 to 9. Maximum germination (99%) was observed in distilled water at pH 5.4. Germination was greatly reduced in solutions with osmotic potentials below −0.4 MPa (28% at −0.6 MPa, and 13% at −0.9 MPa); no germination was observed at −1.3 MPa. Percentage emergence was greater than 45% at burial depths in soil of 0.5 to 10 cm, with maximal emergence (72 to 85%) at depths of 0.5 to 4 cm. Seed sown on the soil surface had low seedling emergence (< 13%). No seedlings emerged when seed was exposed to flooding for 7 d or more. Pueraria lobata seed is capable of germinating in a variety of climatic and edaphic conditions, but flooding may severely limit establishment of stands by seed.

Crowfootgrass, a C4 species, is one of the principal weeds of dry-seeded rice in Asia. Weed management decisions for this species can be derived from knowledge of its seed germination biology. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory and screenhouse to determine the effects of light, alternating day/night temperatures, water stress, seed burial depth, and rice residue on seed germination and seedling emergence of crowfootgrass and to evaluate the response of this weed to commonly available selective POST herbicides in the Philippines. Light stimulated seed germination, but it was not an absolute requirement for germination. Germination in the light/dark regime was greater at alternating day/night temperatures of 25/15 C (92%) than at 30/20 (70%) or 35/25 C (44%). The osmotic potential required for 50% inhibition of maximum germination was −0.23 MPa, although some seeds germinated at −0.6 MPa. Seedling emergence was greatest for the seeds placed on the soil surface (64%), and emergence declined with increased burial depth in soil. No seedlings emerged from a burial depth of 6 cm or greater. Seedling emergence of crowfootgrass was reduced by the addition of rice residue to the soil surface at rates equivalent to 4 to 6 Mg ha−1. Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl + ethoxysulfuron at 45 g ai ha−1 provided excellent control of crowfootgrass when applied at the four- (99%) and six-leaf (86%) stage. The information gained from this study could contribute to developing components of integrated weed management strategies for crowfootgrass. Soil inversion by tillage to bury weed seeds below their maximum depth of emergence, use of crop residue as mulch, and early application of an effective POST herbicide could serve as important tools for managing crowfootgrass.

Fluometuron adsorption and degradation were determined in soil collected at three depths from no-till + no cover, conventional-till + no cover, no-till + vetch cover, and conventional-till + vetch cover in continuous cotton. These combinations of tillage + cover crop + soil depth imparted a range of organic matter and pH to the soil. Soil organic matter and pH ranged from 0.9 to 2.5% and from 4.7 to 6.5, respectively. Fluometuron adsorption was affected by soil depth, tillage, and cover crop. In surface soils (0 to 4 cm), fluometuron adsorption was greater in no-till + vetch plots than in conventional-tilled + no cover plots. Soil adsorption of fluometuron was positively correlated with organic matter content and cation exchange capacity. Fluometuron degradation was not affected by adsorption, and degradation empirically fit a first-order model. Soil organic matter content had no apparent effect on fluometuron degradation rate. Fluometuron degradation was more rapid at soil pH > 6 than at pH ≤ 5, indicating a potential shift in microbial activity or population due to lower soil pH. Fluometuron half-life ranged from 49 to 90 d. These data indicate that tillage and cover crop may affect soil dissipation of fluometuron by altering soil physical and chemical properties that affect fluometuron degrading microorganisms or bioavailability.

Effects of environmental factors, especially light, on eastern black nightshade seed germination were studied under growth chamber conditions. Germination occurred only when temperatures were 20 C or higher for 12 to 24 h d−1. Optimum germination occurred within the constant temperature range of 28 to 33 C or with alternating temperatures of 30/25 and 35/30 C. In the dark, eastern black nightshade germination was poor except at high alternating temperatures of 30/25 and 35/30 C. Seed germination was enhanced by light when temperatures were suboptimal. Imbibition was a prerequisite for response of eastern black nightshade seed to light. The light requirement for eastern black nightshade germination was partially overcome by cold stratification, gibberellic acid (GA3), and high or alternating temperatures. Germination of eastern black nightshade seed was promoted by short exposure to sunlight but was inhibited by prolonged exposure, especially when irradiance was high.

Translocation of 14C-haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} in quackgrass [Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv. # AGRRE] from the treated area (the middle 2.5 cm of the second of three leaves) to the lower leaves was reduced in plants in which 0.56 kg/ha of acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid} or bentazon [3-1-methylethyl)-(1H)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)-one-2,2-dioxide] was added in tank mixture to a 0.07 kg ai/ha application of haloxyfop. Reduced translocation did not occur when haloxyfop rates were increased to 0.28 and 1.1 kg/ha. Bentazon reduced absorption of 14C-DPX-Y6202 {2-[4-[(6-chloro-2-quinoxalinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propionic acid} when applied in tank mixtures with 0.28 and 1.1 kg ai/ha DPX-Y6202. There was less 14C-DPX-Y6202 in the leaf tips of plants treated with 0.07 kg/ha DPX-Y6202 plus 0.56 kg/ha acifluorfen in tank mixture. Relatively small amounts of both 14C-haloxyfop and DPX-Y6202 accumulated in the rhizome and adjacent shoots and acifluorfen did not influence translocation to these plant parts. Considerably more 14C-haloxyfop than 14C-DPX-Y6202 was absorbed by quackgrass. Treatment of quackgrass with acifluorfen or bentazon 24 h prior to application of 14C-haloxyfop or 14C-DPX-Y6202 did not influence absorption or translocation.

We evaluated 214 lines of wild oat (Avena fatua L.) for response to S-2,3-dichloroallyl N,N-diisopropylthiolcarbamate (diallate), S-2,3,3-trichloroaHyl N,N-diisopropylthiolcarbamate (triallate), and 4-chloro-2-butynl m-chlorocarbanilate (barban). We found large differences among the lines in response to these herbicides and some lines that might not be controlled by recommended rates of these herbicides. Frequency distributions of response to herbicides suggest that reaction to these three herbicides is quantitatively inherited. We were unable to establish a relationship between morphological characteristics and plant response to these herbicides.

Radioautographs showed that root uptake of 14C-methanearsonic acid (MAA-14C) by johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) from nutrient solution was rapid and translocation into all portions of the plant occurred within 4 hr after treatment. Basipetal and acropetal translocation of foliar and stem-applied MAA-14C occurred in both johnsongrass and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., var. Rex smooth leaf), indicating that movement of the herbicide probably occurs in both phloem and xylem tissue. However, acropetal movement of MAA in both plants occurred at a higher rate than basipetal movement, and basipetal movement in cotton was not as rapid as in johnsongrass. Methanol extracts of MAA-14C johnsongrass were chromatographed. Radioactive spots with Rf values different from the MAA-14C standard were observed. Use of location reagents on the chromatographs suggested that MAA-14C may complex with either a sugar or organic acid or both. Amino acid fractions were prepared from methanol extracts of both plants. An MAA metabolite, with a positive reaction to ninhydrin, was located on chromatographs spotted with the amino acid fraction from johnsongrass but was not present in the cotton fraction. A comparison of Rf values suggests that the metabolite may be a combination of the MAA molecule with histidine or one of its analogues. Spectrophotometric determination showed a build-up of amino acids in MAA-treated johnsongrass but not in cotton. The increased levels of amino acids in johnsongrass suggest that the MAA metabolite may be blocking a protein synthesis pathway, or some other unknown biosynthetic pathway.

The relative genetic similarity of 37 wild oat samples was determined using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis. These data were compared with the herbicide-resistance characteristics of each sample to determine the importance of mutation and gene flow in the spread of Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor resistance. There was a strong association between the genotypic clustering of samples, their herbicide-resistance characteristics, and their field of origin. Up to eight separate patches in a field were genetically similar, confirming that gene flow by seed movement is important in the distribution of resistant (R) wild oat seed. A greater emphasis on field scouting and treatment of wild oat patches could reduce the spread of resistance within fields. Samples collected from different fields were also found to be genetically similar, indicating that R wild oat was spread between fields. Improved sanitation of tillage and harvesting equipment and the use of certified seed could limit such seed movement.

Methiozolin controls annual bluegrass in creeping bentgrass but application timing and temperature could influence efficacy in turf. In field experiments, sequential methiozolin applications totaling 3.36 kg ai ha−1 provided excellent (> 90%) annual bluegrass control at 8 wk after initial treatment when treatments were initiated in February/March or May but programs totaling 0.84 and 1.68 kg ha−1 provided poor control (< 70%) at both timings. Methiozolin at all rates caused minimal turf injury (< 8%) but creeping bentgrass was only injured from February/March applications. In growth chamber experiments, creeping bentgrass injury from methiozolin at 10 C was 2 and 4 times greater than at 20 C and 30 C, respectively, while annual bluegrass injury was similar across temperatures. In laboratory experiments, annual bluegrass had more foliar absorption of 14C-methiozolin than creeping bentgrass at 30/25 C (day/night), compared to 15/10 C, but translocation was similar at both temperatures as > 90% of absorbed 14C remained in the treated leaf after 72 h. Annual bluegrass distributed and recovered more radioactivity to shoots from root-applied 14C-methiozolin than creeping bentgrass while both species had about 2 times more distribution to shoots at 30/25 C than 15/10 C. Metabolites were not detected in annual bluegrass or creeping bentgrass at 1, 3, or 7 d after treatment when grown at 15/10 C or 30/25 C suggesting uptake and translocation contributes to methiozolin selectivity in turfgrass.

Periodic surveys were conducted to seek potential indigenous fungal agents for development as mycoherbicides against horse purslane, a major weed of agricultural fields in India. Pathogenic fungal species were isolated and identified from naturally infected horse purslane. The biocontrol potential of these pathogens for horse purslane was evaluated by studying their host range and virulence under growth chamber and greenhouse conditions. Three candidates, Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, and Phoma herbarum, were identified as potential candidates for biological control of horse purslane. Preliminary host-range tests and pathogenicity studies, conducted using 45 crop and weed plants belonging to 18 families, demonstrated that P. herbarum provided effective weed control and was safe to most of the plant species tested. Further mycoherbicidal application of P. herbarum as plant spray under field condition caused mortality of horse purslane 60 d after application of the inoculums. Phoma herbarum is a good mycoherbicide candidate against horse purslane.

Soil microbial community structure and activity are linked to plant communities. Weeds may alter their soil environment, selecting for specific rhizosphere microbial communities. Rhizosphere modification occurs for many crop and horticultural plants. However, impacts of weeds in agroecosystems on soil biology and ecology have received less attention because effective weed management practices were developed to minimize their impacts on crop production. The recent development of herbicide resistance (HR) in several economically important weeds leading to widespread infestations in crop fields treated with a single herbicide has prompted a re-evaluation of the effects of weed growth on soil biology and ecology. The objective of this article is to review the potential impacts of herbicide-resistant weeds on soil biological and ecological properties based on reports for crops, weeds, and invasive plants. Persistent weed infestations likely establish extensive root systems and release various plant metabolites through root exudation. Many exudates are selective for specific soil microbial groups mediating biochemical and nutrient acquisition processes. Exudates may stimulate development of microbial groups beneficial to weed but detrimental to crop growth or beneficial to both. Changes in symbiotic and associative microbial interactions occur, especially for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) that are important in plant uptake of nutrients and water, and protecting from phytopathogens. Mechanisms used by weeds to disrupt symbioses in crops are not clearly described. Many herbicide-resistant weeds including Amaranthus and Chenopodium do not support AMF symbioses, potentially reducing AMF propagule density and establishment with crop plants. Herbicides applied to control HR weeds may compound effects of weeds on soil microorganisms. Systemic herbicides released through weed roots may select microbial groups that mediate detrimental processes such as nutrient immobilization or serve as opportunistic pathogens. Understanding complex interactions of weeds with soil microorganisms under extensive infestations is important in developing effective management of herbicide-resistant weeds.

In greenhouse experiments high levels of phosphorus tended to suppress growth of soybeans, oats, and foxtail in the presence of 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) as compared to controls containing no simazine. However, this relationship was not significant, varying with the soil used in the experiment. Emergence of the seedling was delayed and the concentration of ions in solution increased as phosphorus applications were increased. Mineral uptake by soybean shoots was unaffected by phosphorus or simazine alone, but markedly disrupted in the presence of both simazine and phosphorus. Changes in mineral uptake were typical of effects produced by phosphorus toxicity, indicating that simazine reduced the amount of phosphorus required to produce salt injury.

Field experiments were conducted at the Rice Research and Extension Center at Stuttgart, AR, in 1997 and 1998 to evaluate the growth response of Stuttgart strawhull (Stgstraw) red rice to sowing densities of 0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha−1 of ‘Kaybonnet,’ ‘Guichao,’ and ‘PI 312777’ rice cultivars. PI 312777 produced a greater leaf area index and tiller density than Kaybonnet when grown with red rice. In 1997, Stgstraw seed yields were lower when grown with PI 312777 and Guichao than with Kaybonnet. The increased weed population in 1998 did not increase seed yield production of red rice when grown with the three rice cultivars. The Stgstraw red rice seed yield was reduced when grown with 50 kg ha−1 rice when compared with its yield in monoculture and was reduced further when grown with 100 and 150 kg ha−1 rice. These results demonstrate that red rice was more competitive when compared with the tropical japonica Kaybonnet than the indica PI 312777. Despite its semidwarf stature, PI 312777 tended to suppress red rice more than did Guichao or Kaybonnet. The mechanisms responsible for this difference could be important keys to the effective use of weed-suppressive cultivars in reduced herbicide input systems.

Pond studies were conducted at Tishomingo, Oklahoma with wettable powder 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (dichlobenil) and at Denver, Colorado with granular dichlobenil to measure chronic effects on fish and other effects on the ecosystem. Decline of the herbicide was rapid at Tishomingo, with only about 3% of the material remaining after 11 days, while at Denver the herbicide took 3 weeks to reach peak concentration in the water and was still measurable in the water after 189 days. Dichlobenil was present in bottom sediments after 312 days at Tishomingo and after 166 days at Denver. Weeds were controlled at both locations, but regrowth occurred after 3 months in ponds treated at 10 and 20 ppm dichlobenil. No immediate mortality was sustained by fish at either locality, but day-to-day mortality was serious at higher concentrations at Tishomingo. Reproduction apparently was affected by higher dichlobenil levels at Tishomingo. Growth of fish was fastest in ponds treated with highest rates of dichlobenil at Tishomingo, and slowest in the untreated ponds. Residues of dichlobenil developed in fish from all ponds, but faster at Tishomingo than at Denver, and larger in high-treatment ponds than in low-treatment ponds. Some pathology was seen in liver, kidney, and pancreas of Tishomingo fish.

Physical and chemical methods of managing invasive plants (weeds) create disturbances that paradoxically often promote these species because weeds tend to have traits that confer competitive advantages over desired species in disturbed habitats. A more holistic and sustainable method of managing invasive plants is to design disturbance regimes to favor desired species over weeds. This study investigated how the biomass of a herbicide-tolerant plant, alligator weed, and its competitors respond to different chemical disturbances over a 2-yr period. We compared the response of alligator weed and its monocotyledon competitors to 16 different herbicide treatments in a blocked 4 by 2 by 2 factorial design. Treatments included broad spectrum (nonselective) and dicotyledon specific (selective) herbicides applied at two concentrations (variable depending on herbicide) and two frequency regimes (three or four applications). Belowground biomass of alligator weed in unmanipulated control plots was 10 times greater than aboveground biomass, highlighting the need to reduce belowground material if control is to be achieved. All herbicide treatments reduced belowground alligator weed biomass when compared with controls; however in the short term (8 d after the final treatment), even four applications at the highest listed concentration were not sufficient to eliminate alligator weed from study plots. Over the long term (15 mo after the final treatment), selective herbicide application resulted in a sustained reduction in alligator weed biomass and an increase in monocot biomass.

Detached leaves of hemp dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum L.) were treated with 14C-glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] with and without adjuvants in the treatment solution. In the absence of adjuvants, 14C absorption was not significant after the first 30 min harvest. Adjuvants increased the amount of glyphosate initially absorbed but did not extend the period of absorption. The pattern of glyphosate absorption in isolated leaf cells was similar to the pattern found in detached leaves. Significant absorption was obtained at the first 15-min sampling with no additional absorption occurring during the remainder of the 2-h incubation period. The quantity of 14C absorbed by cells was proportional to the external concentration, but the pattern of cellular absorption was unaffected by the glyphosate concentration. After 2 h of incubation, an average of 0.1% of the glyphosate had been absorbed by the leaf cells. In similar studies using 14C-leucine, 1.0% of the 14C was absorbed after 2 h with absorption still increasing in a linear fashion. A uniform distribution of 14C was obtained in detached leaves that had absorbed 14C-glyphosate through the stem. In vitro and in vivo binding studies indicated this absorbed 14C was not tightly bound to cellular components and was probably free to be absorbed by and translocated out of the cells. Since the absorption pattern in detached leaves was similar to the pattern obtained in isolated cells, cellular absorption appears to represent the major barrier in the foliar absorption of glyphosate by hemp dogbane.

Relationships between soil sorption normalized to organic carbon (Koc) and molecular properties of 71 herbicides were examined. The Koc values were obtained from the literature. Various molecular properties were calculated by quantum mechanical methods using molecular modeling software. The quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) models based on four molecular properties, van der Waals volume (VDWv), molecular polarizability (α), dipole moment (μ), and energy of highest occupied molecular orbital (eHOMO), together accounted for 70% of the variation in Koc. Herbicides were broadly divided into six families based on structural similarities, and separate equations were established for each group. The three descriptors, VDWv, α, and μ, along with either energy of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (eLUMO), or electrophilic superdelocalizability (SE), or eHOMO appeared to be determinants and accounted for 82 to 99% of the variation in Koc. Applicability of these models was tested for one herbicide analogue and 10 metabolites. The QSAR models appear to be specific to structurally similar chemicals. The QSAR models could be developed to predict Koc of structurally similar compounds even before they are synthesized or for some of the metabolites of existing herbicides. Models of this type can also be developed to create priority lists for testing, so that time, money, and efforts can be focused on the potentially most hazardous chemicals.

Field experiments from 1997 to 1999 examined cotton cv. ‘Coker 312’ that was genetically transformed to tolerate glufosinate. None of the glufosinate treatments caused visible injury to the glufosinate-tolerant cotton, but treatments were lethal to nontransformed or nonexpressing cotton. No glufosinate treatment adversely affected plant height at maturity, total number of nodes, bolls per plant, or boll positions. Glufosinate applications of 0.6 kg ha−1 made at eight stages of growth, ranging from cotyledon stage to 50% open boll, did not adversely affect yield or fiber quality as measured by micronaire or fiber length and strength. Sequential glufosinate applications up to four stages of growth from the zero- to one-leaf stage to the 14- to 15-leaf stage or individual glufosinate applications at 3.3 kg ha−1 made at the two- to three-leaf stage of growth also did not adversely affect yield or fiber quality. Overall yields in these studies were low relative to normal Texas Southern High Plains cotton yield because these studies were conducted using a Coker 312 parental line, which is generally a poor performer in this region. This research indicated that the transformation events for glufosinate tolerance in cotton were successful and the glufosinate-tolerance gene was expressed throughout the growing season. Transformation and field testing of other cotton varieties are needed to improve varietal performance on the Texas Southern High Plains.

Additive and replacement series studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Glycine max cultivar canopy characteristics, interference, and weed-free period on the vegetative and reproductive growth of Solanum ptycanthum. Solanum ptycanthum established 0, 2, and 4 wk after planting (WAP) did not reduce seed yield of either Group II (Pioneer 9273) or Group IV (Asgrow 4715) varieties. The Group IV variety intercepted a greater percentage of light throughout the season. However, both varieties reduced growth of S. ptycanthum established 2 and 4 WAP, suggesting no disadvantage of Group II in suppressing S ptycanthum growth. The greenhouse and field replacement series experiments indicated that S. ptycanthum plants experienced greater intraspecific than interspecific competition; that is, S. ptycanthum grew more in mixed species competition than in monoculture. Under field conditions, G. max grew equally well in competition with S. ptycanthum or in monoculture. However, in the greenhouse G. max accumulated more biomass and fruit weight in monoculture vs. competition with S. ptycanthum. Relative yield total values (RYT) in the field supported greater productivity per unit area for mixed species competition when compared to G. max or S. ptycanthum grown in monoculture. Data from both studies suggested that S. ptycanthum did not reduce G. max yield when grown in the field. Regardless of maturity group, a fully developed G. max canopy reduced S. ptycanthum growth.

Experiments were conducted in 1998 and 1999 at the Central Crops Research Station near Clayton, NC, to evaluate density-dependent effects of Datura stramonium on weed growth and seed rain and Gossypium hirsutum growth and yield. Datura stramonium height was not affected by density in either year. Crop height never exceeded weed height during the growing season, indicating that competition for light occurred between the two species. Eight weeks after planting or later, G. hirsutum height decreased as D. stramonium density increased. An increase in D. stramonium density from 1 to 32 plants (9.1 m of row)−1 resulted in a decrease in capsule production per plant of 92 and 60 in 1998 and 1999, respectively. Total D. stramonium dry weight per 9.1 m of row increased via a quadratic relationship as weed density increased. Gossypium hirsutum lint yields decreased as D. stramonium biomass and density increased in both years. Estimated yield losses of 10 and 25% were caused by D. stramonium at 0.5 and 1.5 plants (9.1 m of row)−1 (572 and 1,716 plants ha−1), respectively, in 1998 and 0.6 and 1.8 plants (9.1 m of row)−1 (690 and 2,060 plants ha−1), respectively, in 1999.
