Minimally invasive surgery is a developing direction of modern medicine. With the successful development of controllable capsule endoscopies, capsule robots are very popular in the field of gastrointestinal medicine. At present, the study of intestinal robots is aimed at the pipeline environment of a single-phase liquid flow. But there exist food residues (i.e. solid particles) or liquid foods in the actual intestine, so intestinal fluid should be liquid–solid or liquid–liquid two-phase mixed fluid. For inner spiral capsule robots with different internal diameters and outer spiral capsule robots, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, the operational performance indicators (i.e. axial thrust force, circumferential resisting moment and maximum pressure to pipeline wall) of spiral capsule robots are numerically calculated in the liquid–solid or liquid–liquid two-phase mixed fluid. By the orthogonal experimental optimization method, the optimum design of spiral capsule robots is obtained in the liquid–solid mixed fluid. The experimental verification has been also carried out. The results show that in the liquid–solid two-phase fluid, the axial thrust force and circumferential resisting moment of the spiral capsule robots decrease with the increase of the size or concentration of solid particles. In the same liquid–solid or liquid–liquid mixed fluid, the operational performance indicators of outer spiral robots are much higher than those of inner spiral robots, and the operational performance indicators of inner spiral robots with bigger internal diameters are higher than those with smaller internal diameters. Adding solid particles of high concentration in the pipeline containing liquid will reduce the drive performance of spiral capsule robots, but adding another liquid of high viscosity will improve the drive performance of spiral capsule robots.

Singularity analysis of parallel manipulators is an active research field in robotics. The present article derives for the first time in the literature a condition under which a five-bar parallel robot encounters high-order parallel singularities. In this regard, by focusing on the planar 5R mechanism, a theorem is given in terms of the slope of its coupler curve at the parallel singular configurations. At high-order parallel singularities, the associated determinant vanishes simultaneously with at least its first-order time derivative. The determination of such singularities is quite important since in their presence, some special conditions should be satisfied for bounded inverse dynamic solutions.

The goal of this paper is to present a new hybrid system based on the fusion of gaze data and Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) not only to command a powered wheelchair, but also to account for users distraction levels (concentrated or distracted). For this purpose, a multi-layer perception neural network was set up in order to combine relevant gazing and blinking features from gaze sequence and brainwave features from occipital and parietal brain regions. The motivation behind this work is the shortages raised from the individual use of gaze-based and SSVEP-based wheelchair command techniques. The proposed framework is based on three main modules: a gaze module to select command and activate the flashing stimuli. An SSVEP module to validate the selected command. In parallel, a distraction level module estimates the intention of the user by mean of behavioral entropy and validates/inhibits the command accordingly. An experimental protocol was set up and the prototype was tested on five paraplegic subjects and compared with standard SSVEP and gaze-based systems. The results showed that the new framework performed better than conventional gaze-based and SSVEP-based systems. Navigation performance was assessed based on navigation time and obstacles collisions.

A Pneumatic Muscle Actuator (PMA) is a new pneumatic component sharing similar characteristics with biological muscles, and the flexible manipulator actuated by PMAs can better reflect the flexibility of the mechanism. First and foremost, based on the study of the characteristics of human shoulder joints, the configuration design of the flexible manipulator is analyzed, and its kinematics and dynamics models are established. Furthermore, with regard to the nonlinearity, time-invariance and uncertainty of the control system, three aspects of improvement are proposed, which are based on the Radial Basis Function (RBF) network torque control algorithm. The Genetic Algorithm is used to optimize the initial values of RBF network parameters; RBF network parameters are adjusted dynamically by using the additional momentum method; the Levenberg--Marquardt (LM) algorithm, instead of the gradient descent method, is adopted to adjust Proportion Integration Differentiation (PID) parameters online in real time. At last, to test the effects that the improved algorithm exerts on the flexible manipulator control system, some physical platform experiments are carried out. It turns out that the control accuracy and robustness of the improved algorithm are well improved, and the mechanism can be controlled better to track the circular arc trajectory. It lays fundamental importance to the practical application for the working environment.

This paper presents a concept of sequentially actuated multi-degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot with only one motor. A switching mechanism allowing to actuate sequentially the different joints–or combinations of the joints–of the robot is also proposed. Potential actuation schemes (joint combinations) are presented and their properties are discussed. Cartesian pick-and-place trajectories are then considered using different actuation schemes. An optimisation algorithm is presented in order to provide the best possible sequence by minimising the amplitude of the joint rotations for a given actuation combination. A simple planar two-DOF and the SCARA architectures are used to illustrate the concept. Finally, a prototype is developed with the aim of demonstrating the sequentially actuated manipulator concept.

This work presents a novel trajectory tracking, hovering, and yaw motion control for quadrotors subject to unknown modeling uncertainties and disturbances. Nonlinear equations of motion are used to model the quadrotor's motion without any simplifying assumptions. An integral backstepping control is developed by defining the tracking errors, their integral, and their first through third time derivatives as the system states. The resulting surge force and roll and pitch moments are shown to asymptotically stabilize the error states subject to bounded disturbances and modeling uncertainties. Similarly, a yaw moment is derived through integral backstepping that simultaneously stabilizes yaw motion errors. The controller performance in simultaneous trajectory and yaw motion tracking is verified through both simulations and experiments.

Cooperative manipulators have uncertainties in their structure; therefore, an optimal sliding mode control method is derived from a combination of the sliding mode control (SMC) and the state-dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) technique. This proposed combination is applied to a class of non-linear closed-loop systems. One of the distinguished features of this control method is its robustness toward uncertainty. Due to the lack of optimality in the SMC method, in this paper, a robust and optimal method is presented by considering the SDRE in design of the sliding surface. Due to the fact that cooperative manipulators have been used for carrying loads, the percentage of load distributions between each manipulator has been derived to increase the dynamic load carrying capacity (DLCC). The proposed control structure is implemented on a Scout robot with two manipulators in cooperative mode, theoretically and practically using LabVIEW software; and the results were compared by considering the uncertainty in its structure. In comparison with the SDRE, the proposed method increased the DLCC almost 10% in the Scout case.

This paper presents a novel approach to implement bilateral control loops between local haptic devices and remote industrial manipulators using a layer of simulation and virtual reality. The remote scene of manipulation has been visualized in an open-source software environment, where forward and inverse kinematics of the manipulators can be computed. Therefore, the explicit knowledge of mathematical models of the robots is not required for the implementation of the proposed bilateral control schemes. A haptic coupling has been designed between the human operator and the task in the remote environment. Virtually introduced force feedback has contributed to the performance of the proposed bilateral loop by facilitating the adaptation of unexperienced human operators. Teleoperation of one remote manipulator has been experimentally demonstrated with the proposed controllers. Structural modularity of the bilateral haptic control schemes makes them directly extendable for the teleoperation of multiple collaborative robots. Stability and transparency of the proposed bilateral haptic controllers have been theoretically and experimentally investigated.

PMs with two rotations and one translation (2R1T) have been used as skeletons in various advanced manufacturing equipment where high accuracy and stiffness are basic requirements. Considering the advantages of redundant actuation and overconstrained structure, such as reduced singularities and improved stiffness, a new 2R1T overconstrained PM with actuation redundancy, called Hex4, is proposed in this paper. This is a 2-PUR/2-RPU PM (where P denotes an actuated prismatic joint, U a universal joint, and R a revolute joint) that is actuated by four prismatic joints. Compared with some existing 2R1T overconstrained PMs with actuation redundancy, the main advantage of the proposed PM is that the heavy motors of two limbs are mounted on the base to reduce the movable mass and improve dynamic response. First, mobility analysis, inverse kinematics, and velocity analysis are presented. Then, the local transmission index and good transmission workspace are used to evaluate the motion/force transmissibility of the Hex4 PM. The variation tendencies of the two indices with different link parameters are investigated. The singularity is then discussed by considering the motion/force transmissibility. Finally, link parameters are optimized to obtain an improved good transmission workspace. It is shown that the proposed PM has a good potential for high precision applications.

With the increasing demands for versatile robotic platforms capable of performing a variety of tasks in diverse and uncertain environments, the needs for adaptable robotic structures have been on the rise. These requirements have led to the development of modular reconfigurable robotic systems that are composed of a numerous self-sufficient modules. Each module is capable of establishing rigid connections between multiple modules to form new structures that enable new functionalities. This allows the system to adapt to unknown tasks and environments. In such structures, coupling between modules is of crucial importance to the overall functionality of the system. Over the last two decades, researchers in the field of modular reconfigurable robotics have developed novel coupling mechanisms intended to establish rigid and robust connections, while enhancing system autonomy and reconfigurability. In this paper, we review research contributions related to robotic coupling mechanism designs, with the aim of outlining current progress and identifying key challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. By presenting notable design approaches to coupling mechanisms and the most relevant efforts at addressing the challenges of sensorization, misalignment tolerance, and autonomous reconfiguration, we hope to provide a useful starting point for further research into the field of modular reconfigurable robotics and other applications of robotic coupling.
