Instructions for peer reviewers

Peer review is the foundation of quality in research for both books and journals, ensuring that published research is rigorous and ethical. Peer reviewers can access a number of resources to assist them with their peer reviewing duties:

The journal administrator is also happy to help with any queries regarding undertaking peer review assignments. Please contact the Editorial Office with any questions.

The Review of International Studies adheres to a double-anonymous peer-reviewing policy in which the identity of the reviewers and the authors are always concealed from both parties.

We ask reviewers to address the following questions:

  • Is the submission a major contribution to existing debates in IR and its sub-fields?
  • Is the article original and innovative in terms of its substance, approach and/or methodology?
  • Are there any major deficiencies in terms of its theoretical, empirical, methodological, conceptual or literary content?
  • Are there particular arguments or passages that need further clarification, deletion or expansion?

We also ask reviewers to consider whether adequate reference is made to the scholarly literature in the field. Recent studies have highlighted the possible under-representation of female and minority scholars in article citations. Review of International Studies is committed to ensuring that scholars receive appropriate intellectual acknowledgement through citations, regardless of race, gender, class, professional standing, or other categorical attributes. To that end, we ask referees to pay particular attention to the representativeness of citational practices manifested in all article submissions.
