Broken large mammal fossil bones in eastern Beringia have been used to argue for a middle-Wisconsin, or earlier, time of human entry into North America, It has been inferred that these controversial Pleistocene bones are artifacts because (1) they are similar to those found in archaeological sites and (2) they can be reproduced in the laboratory by replication. However, fractured, flaked, polished, faceted, cut, and scratched bones similar to the purportedly human artifacts described from Beringia are known to be produced by natural processes. New experimental data demonstrate that identifications of Pleistocene bone artifacts on the basis of differential staining and fresh breakage are suspect. Physical processes, such as the violent forces of river ice breakups in the north, and bone crushing by mammalian scavengers produce similar pseudo-artifacts. Additionally, the middle-Wisconsin dates associated with some of the finished tools, and human and dog bones from Beringia are open to question. The lack of credible dates on these artifacts raises doubt about the model of human colonization of Beringia, developed in the 1960s, which proposed an interstadial colonization of the New World.

Prior to European settlement, oligohaline and mesohaline sections of Chesapeake Bay draining Piedmont saprolite supported diverse and abundant diatom and macrophyte populations. Compositional changes in diatoms and macrophytes in oligohaline sections correspond with 17th- and 19th-century deforestation and increased siltation, while effects on downstream populations were less notable. After deforestation, previously sparse diatom populations in a mesohaline estuary draining sandy Coastal Plain soils became more abundant. Fertilization of cultivated land was accompanied by increased production of both attached and free-floating diatoms. After the discharge of sewage, diatom populations increased enormously in the affected areas, followed by a dramatic decrease. The decrease suggests silica limitation after intense phosphorus enrichment. The loss of macrophytes and increase in planktonic diatoms in oligohaline areas in recent years resemble the historical sequences observed in lakes undergoing eutrophication. However, in the estuary, similar declines have also occurred in macrophyte populations in mesohaline areas where eutrophication is much less severe, but where chlorine and herbicide toxicity during the past 20 yr is similar to upstream areas.

Mapping of Holocene pollen data in the midwestern United States has revealed several broadscale vegetational changes that can be interpreted in climatic terms. These changes include (1) the early Holocene northward movement of the spruce-dominated forest and its later southward movement after 3000 yr B.P. and (2) the eastward movement of the prairie/forest border into southwestern Wisconsin by 8000 yr B.P. and its subsequent westward retreat after 6000 yr B.P. When certain basic assumptions are met, multiple regression models can be derived from modern pollen and climate data and used to transform the pollen record of these vegetational changes into quantitative estimates of temperature or precipitation. To maximize the reliability of the regression equations, we followed a sequence of procedures that minimize violations of the assumptions that underlie regression analysis. Reconstructions of precipitation during the Holocene indicated that from 9000 to 6000 yr B.P. precipitation decreased by 10 to 25% over much of the Midwest, while mean July temperature increased by 0.5° to 2.0°C. At 6000 yr B.P. precipitation was less than 80% of its modern values over parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota. After 6000 yr B.P. precipitation generally increased, while mean July temperature decreased in the north, and increased in the south. The time of the maximum temperature varies within the Midwest and is earlier in the north and later in the south.

Enantiomeric (d/l) ratios of eight amino acids in three homogeneous powdered fossil Pleistocene mollusk samples have been compared. Eleven laboratories have contributed results to this effort. Three gas chromatographic methods and one ion-exchange chromatographic method were used. In general, the coefficients of variation (c.v.) are best for alanine, glutamic acid, and aspartic acid (3–8%). For leucine and phenylalanine, the c.v.'s are between 5 and 10%. For isoleucine, proline, and valine the c.v.'s range from 10 to 18%. Individual laboratories usually report analytical precision of between 2 and 5%, but it is clear that significant differences between laboratories' results are often encountered, and that these analytical differences could, in some cases, lead to very significant differences (25% or more) in age estimates based upon enantiomeric ratios. Multiple analyses of desalted hydrolyzates of these powder samples suggest that interlaboratory differences are often caused by instrumental and/or derivatization procedures rather than the wet-chemical sample preparative steps. It is proposed that the powder samples described here be used in all future publications of fossil amino acid enantiomeric ratio data.

Fungi in dung of the Arctic ground squirrel (Spermophilus parryii) collected near Dominion Creek, Yukon Territory, Canada, have a radiocarbon age of 12,200 ± 100 yr B.P. Most of the fungal remains are assignable to modern taxa, and most of these are either widespread saprobes or nonspecific coprophiles. However, specimens identified as Chaetomium simile and Thecaphora deformans represent fungi that may be more characteristic of rodent dung than that of other animals, inviting consideration of dung fungi as a potential source of paleontological data.

A stable isotope and 14C investigation of carbonates from three late Quaternary cores with high rates of sedimentation from the northeastern Bermuda Rise has produced the highest resolution record of the glacial maximum to Holocene stable isotope change yet obtained from an open ocean location. The record includes a three-step “termination” and the first direct evidence of an early deglacial meltwater “spike” in the open sea.

Three central Arctic Ocean sediment cores were sampled for percentage carbonate, number of foraminifera, and texture. These three parameters were used in spectral analyses to test the idea that the ice-covered Arctic Ocean may respond to orbital forcing in a different manner than has been indicated for lower latitude ice-free oceans. The record for two of the cores represents approximately 1 my, and the record for the third, approximately 400,000 yr. The 100,000-yr frequency is well represented in all of the cores. A 40,000-yr frequency may be present, as well. An unexpected 70,000-yr frequency occurs in most of the spectra and may reflect nonlinear sedimentation rates or the combined effect of obliquity and eccentricity. The strong 100,000-yr signal confirms that, in spite of ice feedback, the Arctic Ocean has responded to orbital forcing in much the same manner as have ice-free oceans.

A sequence of radiocarbon-dated buried trees, buried soils, a carbonate zone, and a molluscan fauna from Carnegie Canyon indicate that between 3200 and 2600 yr B.P. the climate of west-central Oklahoma was drier than today. A high water table accompanied a period of moister climate 2000 to 1000 yr B.P. The water table dropped after 1000 yr B.P. due to a change toward dry conditions.
