The mechanism underlying acute changes in secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) remains to be determined. In this experiment, sIgA and cardiovascular activity were monitored at rest and while participants performed a mental arithmetic task, cold pressor, and submaximal cycle exercise following placebo or 1 mg of the alpha-adrenergic blocker, doxazosin. Under placebo, the tasks produced patterns of cardiovascular activity indicative of combined alpha- and beta-adrenergic, alpha-adrenergic, and beta-adrenergic activation, respectively. Doxazosin was associated with reduced blood pressure during cold pressor, but not during arithmetic or exercise. Mental arithmetic elicited increases in sIgA concentration and exercise produced increases in both sIgA concentration and secretion rate; these changes were unaffected by alpha blockade. In contrast, the cold pressor was associated with decreases in both sIgA concentration and secretion rate, which were blocked by doxazosin. These data suggest that acute decreases, but not increases, in sIgA are mediated by alpha-adrenergic mechanisms.

The anterior cingulate is believed to play a crucial role in the regulation of thought and action. Recent evidence suggests that the anterior cingulate may play a role in the detection of inappropriate responses. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques to examine the neural responses to appropriate (correct rejects and correct hits) and inappropriate (errors of commission) behavioral responses during a go/no-go task. Analyses of the inappropriate responses revealed extensive activation in the rostral anterior cingulate cortex and in the left lateral frontal cortex. These areas were not activated for correctly classified trials (correct rejects and correct hits). These data suggest that the rostral anterior cingulate and left lateral frontal cortex are integral components of the brain's error checking system.

This study examined the effect of attention engagement to compound auditory-visual stimuli on the modification of the startle blink reflex in infants. Infants at 8, 14, 20, or 26 weeks of age were presented with interesting audiovisual stimuli. After stimulus onset, at delays defined by heart rate changes known to be associated with sustained attention or attention disengagement, blink reflexes were elicited by visual or auditory stimuli. Blink amplitude to either visual or auditory stimuli was enhanced when the infants were engaged in attention to the foreground auditory-visual stimuli relative to control trials with no foreground patterns. This enhancement of the blink amplitude increased from 8 to 26 weeks of age. In contrast to selective modality enhancement for single-modality foreground stimuli, these results show that these multimodal stimuli engage both visual and auditory attention systems in this age range.

This study had two objectives: To examine poorly understood patterns of young children's electrodermal reactivity and to test the hypothesis that this reactivity reflects individual differences in the behavioral inhibition system (BIS). We recorded skin conductance responses (SCRs) from 92 4-year-old children during a laboratory session that encompassed physiological and psychological stimuli. Physiological stimuli (breaths), moderately loud to loud sounds (expected and unexpected) and, to a lesser extent, stimuli with psychological significance elicited clear SCRs. Induction of psychological conflict and exposure to emotional film clips for the most part did not elicit increases in skin conductance (SC). Children's temperament dimensions of fearfulness and effortful (or inhibitory) control—two components of the BIS—were assessed using robust observational batteries at age 2 and 4 years. The theoretically expected correlations between overall SC lability (reflecting SC levels) and both dimensions of temperament were significant, albeit modest and limited to the contemporaneous measures at age 4.

The effectiveness of different types of auditory prepulses in eliciting skin conductance orienting and in producing prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle eyeblink was studied in two experiments. A discrete white noise prepulse produced greater PPI than either a continuous white noise, a discrete tone, or a continuous tone. The discrete white noise advantage was not due to similarity in bandwidth to the startle pulse or to a refractory effect of the prepulse. Moreover, a dissociation between PPI and skin conductance orienting was seen in both experiments. PPI using auditory prepulses appears to be dependent primarily on the acoustic characteristics of the transient portion of the prepulse, whereas skin conductance orienting is more dependent on the sustained portions of the stimulus.

This study investigated the locus of the interference effect in a stimulus–response compatibility task using event-related potentials (ERPs). Ten participants were instructed to respond to stimulus color with the left or right middle finger. Red or blue arrows pointed in the same direction as the response hand on congruent trials and pointed in the opposite direction on incongruent trials. Neutral trials were red or blue horizontal bars. Reaction times (RTs) to incongruent stimuli were significantly longer than RTs to congruent stimuli. The peak latency of the P300 for incongruent stimuli was significantly longer than that for congruent stimuli. In addition, onset of stimulus-locked lateralized readiness potential (LRPs) was significantly later for incongruent stimuli than for congruent stimuli. However, electromyogram (EMG)-locked LRPs for incongruent stimuli showed incorrect preparation. These results suggest that the interference effect might occur at the stage in which stimulus evaluation processes and response-related processes overlap.

In the present study it was investigated whether the smaller P3s in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children are caused by a shortage of capacity underlying P3 processes or whether they are due to a capacity allocation problem. Also, effects of methylphenidate on these processes were investigated. Performance and event-related potentials (ERPs) of 14 ADHD and 14 control children were measured using an irrelevant-probe technique. Three types of task irrelevant visual probes (standards, deviants, and novels) were presented against the background of two visual tasks that varied in task difficulty. The parietal P3 wave was measured in response to task stimuli and probes. ADHD subjects made significantly fewer correct detections than normal controls in both the easy and the hard tasks. Controls showed an enhanced P3 to task-relevant stimuli in the hard task, whereas ADHD children did not. Probe (novel) P3 amplitudes decreased from the easy to the hard task to the same extent in both groups. Methylphenidate enhanced the percentage of correct responses and task P3 amplitudes in both the easy and the hard task but probe P3 amplitudes were not influenced by methylphenidate. It was concluded that ADHD children do not suffer from a shortage in attentional capacity; rather, the evidence is in favor of a problem with capacity allocation. Furthermore, methylphenidate had enhancing effects on performance and ERPs, but did not improve the capacity-allocation deficit.

Distinctive words elicit the P300 component of the event-related brain potential, and are also likely to be recalled. Previous studies have shown that the larger the P300 elicited by distinctive words, the more likely it is that those words will be recalled. The present study addressed whether this relationship is affected by the manner in which distinctiveness is induced. Distinctiveness was manipulated either by varying the size of the characters in which a word was displayed, or by surrounding the word with a frame at close or far distance. All distinctiveness attributes resulted in improved recall performance. The words whose size was distinctive elicited a large P300, and P300 amplitude was larger for subsequently recalled words. The frame attributes elicited a small P300, and the amplitude of these P300s was not correlated with subsequent recall performance. Instead, a frontal slow wave was correlated with subsequent recall performance in the far frame group. It is concluded that the relationship between P300 amplitude and subsequent recall depends on the type of distinctiveness attribute, and should therefore not be ascribed to a generalized effect of distinctiveness on memory encoding processes.

Studies that measure the onset of the lateralized readiness potential (LRP) could well provide researchers with important new data concerning the information-processing locus of experimental effects of interest. However, detecting the onset of the LRP has proved difficult. The present study used computer simulations involving both human and artificial data, and both stimulus- and response-locked effects, to compare a wide variety of techniques for detecting and estimating differences in the onset latency of the LRP. Across the two sets of simulations, different techniques were found to be the most accurate and reliable for the analysis of stimulus- and response-locked data. On the basis of these results, it is recommended that regression-based methods be used to analyze most LRP data.

Two different event-related potential (ERP) components were used to investigate the temporal processing of semantic and phonological encoding during implicit picture naming. Participants were shown pictures and carried out a dual choice go/nogo decision based on semantic information (i.e., whether the picture was of an object or an animal) and phonological information (i.e., whether the picture's name starts with a vowel or a consonant). In addition to the already established lateralized readiness potential (LRP; related to response preparation), we introduce the N200 (presumably related to response inhibition) as a tool for measuring online language processing. Both, the LRP and the N200 data indicated that semantic processing began earlier than phonological processing. The data are discussed in the context of language production models. Therein, the LRP and N200 results, taken together, favor a serial or cascaded processing model of language production in contrast to a parallel processing account.

To assess the processing stages involved in attention shifting and response selection tasks in children, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) and performance measures during a variant of the Posner paradigm. Subjects responded to visual targets, either preceded by a spatial cue (valid = same side; invalid = opposite side) or presented uncued. Valid targets evoked high-amplitude P1 responses, single-peaked P3s, and the shortest reaction times (RTs). Invalidly cued stimuli evoked delayed RTs, resulting in part from incorrectly oriented attention (decreased P1) leading to delayed target processing (belated N2-P3). Invalid targets also evoked a positive slow wave attributed to prolonged response selection due to cue/target incompatibility. Uncued stimuli elicited the longest RTs, unexplained by deficits in target detection or response selection, which likely resulted from a deficit in motor preparation due to the lack of warning signal. This method may be applied in clinical settings to disentangle selective processing deficits in target detection, response selection, or motor preparation stages.

A longitudinal study (G. K. Kochanska, 1997) showed that temperamental fearfulness, assessed at toddler age via observational data and maternal ratings, moderated pathways to internalized conscience at age 4. For fearful children, maternal gentle discipline deemphasizing power predicted conscience development; for fearless children, attachment security predicted conscience development. Electrodermal reactivity assessed at age 4 on the same children was used as a physiological reflection of fearful temperament and was substituted for the earlier fearfulness measure to test the theoretical model. As expected, for electrodermally reactive children, maternal gentle discipline predicted conscience, whereas for nonreactive children, attachment security predicted conscience. The findings support the notions of (a) electrodermal reactivity at an early age as a correlate of temperament, (b) temperament as a moderator of socialization in early moral development, and (c) lovelessness in psychopathic individuals as an index of the failure of the alternative pathway (via attachment) to conscience in fearless children.

According to A.H.C. Van der Heijden (1992), attentional selection of visual stimuli can be considered as location selection. Depending on the type of task, location selection can be considered to be automatic (e.g., in case of abrupt onsets), directly controlled (e.g., in case of symbolic precues), or indirectly controlled (e.g., in case of visual search). In tasks with symbolic precues a contralateral enhancement of the P1 event-related potential (ERP) component has been found, whereas in visual search tasks a contralateral enhancement of the N2 component has been found. We hypothesized that both lateralized effects reflect the influence of location selection, which differs only in its moment of activation. Linear arrays (a target among five distractors, presented at two eccentricities) requiring left or right responses, were preceded by cues indicating either the precise target location or the side of the target, or by bilateral cues that indicated all array positions. Array-evoked ERPs, corrected for cue-evoked and interactive effects, showed not only lateralized but also target location-specific effects for both components, which supports the view that, depending on the type of task, either the P1 or the N2 component reflect the influence of location selection.

The effects of fragrance on sexual response in women were investigated using subjective and physiological measures of sexual arousal and of mood. Responses were obtained from female participants in three different fragrance conditions (female fragrance, male fragrance, and a “blank” or neutral substance), as they viewed erotic and sexually neutral films, and fantasized about sexual situations. Each woman was tested twice: during the midfollicular and periovulatory phases of her menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycle phase effects were apparent; self-report data indicated greater sexual arousal and more positive mood during the periovulatory than during the follicular phase. Results demonstrated a positive effect of the male fragrance on genital arousal during erotic fantasy, but this finding was apparent only during the follicular phase testing session. This effect did not appear to be mediated by any effects of fragrance on mood.

We studied the relationship of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) to the co-activation of autonomic and facial expressive responses in 37 adult men during Rorschach testing. Interbeat interval (IBI), electrodermal activity, and facial electromyography were recorded continuously during the experiment. Prevailing mood and variability in the experience of valence and arousal were also measured. Bivariate intraindividual time series analysis was used to quantify spontaneously coupled phasic physiological responses. The results suggested that (a) spontaneous autonomic and expressive responses tend to parallel in time; (b) baseline, task-level, and task-induced change of RSA were positively related to coupled autonomic–expressive responses, a change in mood toward a more energetic state, and a tendency to have more variability in the emotional experience during the task; and (c) especially cardiac–expressive response coupling was related to mood change. It is concluded that the vagal system is related to the control of facial muscle activity and may mediate both tonic and phasic emotion-related changes in IBI. The role of phasic intraindividual response patterns in emotional and social behavior is highlighted.

In a repetitive auditory stimulus sequence, deviant infrequent tones typically elicit a component of auditory event-related potentials termed mismatch negativity (MMN). The elicitation of MMN is assumed to reflect the existence of a memory trace of the standard stimulus that has a decay time of about 10 s and is strengthened by repetition of the standards. The main aim of the present study was to test the decay time of the sensory memory trace during rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep vs. wakefulness, as indexed by the MMN. Subjects were presented 10 tone trains, separated by 3, 6, or 9 s of silence, during waking and REM sleep. Each train consisted of 9 standards of 1000 Hz and 1 deviant of 2000 Hz that occurred at position 1, 2, 4, or 6. The waking deviants elicited a frontocentral negativity with a scalp topography equivalent to the MMN component. During REM sleep, the negative component showed the same scalp distribution only for the 3-s intertrain interval (ITI). In this brain state, the MMN amplitude was smaller and decreased with prolongation of the ITI. These results suggest a weaker sensory memory trace formation and a premature decay time of such a memory trace during REM sleep as compared with wakefulness.

If electrodermal activity is recorded with direct current, constant voltage and constant current measurements result in different dependencies of electrodermal reactions on the actual electrodermal level. The present study demonstrates empirically that such a problem does not exist when instead the phase angle changes between alternating current and voltage are obtained. Forty subjects were subjected to a 20-trial habituation series on two different occasions, in which electrodermal level variations were induced by room temperature changes. A multiplexing system was used to enable quasi-simultaneous constant current and constant voltage recording under both direct and alternating current measurement conditions. If the alternating current technique was applied and electrodermal responses were expressed as changes of phase angle between voltage and current, electrodermal recordings with constant voltage and with constant current provided equivalent results, even if electrodermal levels were considerably different. Therefore, using the phase angle method instead of the conventional direct current methods will finally resolve the problem of differential level dependency in electrodermal recording. A further advantage will be that electrode and skin polarization are prevented by the use of alternating current.

The hallmark of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is chronic uncontrollable worry. A preattentive bias toward threat cues and hypervigilance may support this ongoing state of apprehension. A study was conducted to bridge the attentional and physiological underpinnings of GAD by examining phasic heart period (HP) responses to cued threat and nonthreat stimuli. Thirty-three GAD clients and 33 nonanxious control participants engaged in an S1-S2 procedure that employed cued threat and nonthreat word stimuli, during which phasic HP reactions were recorded. As compared with the control group, the GAD group showed (1) smaller cardiac orienting responses and impaired habituation of cardiac orienting to neutral words, (2) HR acceleration in response to threat words, and (3) a conditioned anticipatory HR deceleration to threat words over repeated trials. The cardiac-autonomic underpinnings of GAD appear to rigidly maintain precognitive defensive responses against threat. This portrayal is discussed in the context of an integrative model that depicts diminished global adaptive variability in GAD.

Twenty-eight volunteers were instructed to attend stimuli presented at one side of the computer screen and to ignore stimuli presented at the other side. Both attended and unattended stimulus series consisted of targets (25%) and nontargets (75%) defined on the basis of stimulus shape. Attended targets required a binary choice based on stimulus color. Selective attention led to the expected increase in both midlatency (N2b) and late (P3) brain potential components. Furthermore, selective attention led to increased anticipatory cardiac slowing preceding the target stimulus and to increased primary bradycardia. Correlational analyses revealed a positive relation between the effects of selective attention on N2b amplitude and primary bradycardia suggestive of cortical involvement in the chronotropic control of heart rate.

Behavioral studies have shown that two different morphed faces belonging to the same identity are harder to discriminate than two faces stemming from two different identities. The temporal course of this categorical perception effect has been explored through event-related potentials. Three kinds of pairs were presented in a matching task: (1) two different morphed faces representing the same identity (within), (2) two other faces representing two different identities (between), and (3) two identical morphed faces (same). Following the second face onset in the pair, the amplitude of the right occipitotemporal negativity (N170) was reduced for within and same pairs as compared with between pairs, suggesting an identity priming effect. We also observed a modulation of the P3b wave, as the amplitude of the responses for within pairs was higher than for between and same pairs, suggesting a higher complexity of the task for within pairs. These results indicate that categorical perception of human faces has a perceptual origin in the right occipitotemporal hemisphere.
