We describe the DR14 APOGEE-TGAS catalogue, a new SDSS value-added catalogue that provides precise astrophysical parameters, chemical abundances, astro-spectro- photometric distances and extinctions, as well as orbital parameters for ~30, 000 APOGEE-TGAS stars, among them ~5, 000 high-quality giant stars within 1 kpc.

An investigation for search of correlation between the daily observations of mean magnetic field and daily flare count number in different class is studied here. The daily observations for mean magnetic field presented here are taken by Wilcox Solar observatory and daily flare count in different X-ray class is provided by National Centers For Environmental Information.

Far-infrared spectroscopy reveals gas cooling and its underlying heating due to physical processes taking place in the surroundings of protostars. These processes are reflected in both the chemistry and excitation of abundant molecular species. Here, we present the Herschel-PACS far-IR spectroscopy of 90 embedded low-mass protostars from the WISH (van Dishoeck et al. 2011), DIGIT (Green et al. 2013), and WILL surveys (Mottram et al. 2017). The 5 × 5 spectra covering the ∼50″ × 50″ field-of-view include rotational transitions of CO, H2O, and OH lines, as well as fine-structure [O I] and [C II] in the ∼50-200 μm range. The CO rotational temperatures are typically ∼300 K, with some sources showing additional components with temperatures as high as ∼1000 K. The H2O / CO and H2O / OH flux ratios are low compared to stationary shock models, suggesting that UV photons may dissociate some H2O and decrease its abundance. Comparison to C shock models illuminated by UV photons show a good agreement between the line emission and the models for pre-shock densities of 105 cm−3 and UV fields 0.1-10 times the interstellar value. The far-infrared molecular and atomic lines are the unique diagnostic of shocks and UV fields in deeply-embedded sources.

Many accretion disks surrounding supermassive black holes in nearby AGN are observed to host 22 GHz water maser activity. We have analyzed single-dish 22 GHz spectra taken with the GBT to identify 32 such “Keplerian disk systems,” which we used to investigate maser excitation and explore the possibility of disk reverberation. Our results do not support a spiral shock model for population inversion in these disks, and we find that any reverberating signal propagating radially outwards from the AGN must constitute <10% of the total observed maser variability. Additionally, we have used ALMA to begin exploring the variety of sub-mm water megamasers that are also predicted, and in the case of the 321 GHz transition found, to be present in these accretion disks. By observing multiple masing transitions within a single system, we can better constrain the physical conditions (e.g., gas temperature and density) in the accretion disk.

The coronal is the origins of large-scale solar activity and disastrous space weather, it contains extremely rich information and various physical processes. The coronal loop is a kind of bright structure with hot plasma which is bounded by magnetic field in the coronal, it is a good reflection of the magnetic structure that we can hardly observe directly. It is also the energy channel between the photosphere and coronal, and the study of coronal loop is helpful for us to understand the magnetic line foot movement.

The Equatorial Electrojet (EEJ) is a narrow band of electrons flowing from east to west at daytime at low latitudes. The electron current produces a magnetic field variation that can be measured at different latitudes. In this work, we have used the data analysis in order to quantify the solar and lunar contributions to those variations and study the morphology of the EEJ current.

In recent years, surprise discoveries of pulsed emission from the Crab and Vela pulsars above 100 GeV have drawn renewed attention to this largely unexplored region of the energy range. In this paper, we discuss example light curves due to curvature emission, with good resolution in the different energy bands. Continued light curve modelling may help to discriminate between different emission mechanisms, as well as constrain the location where emission is produced within the pulsar magnetosphere, including regions beyond the light cylinder.

Astronomy in Japan has long history and has its own “light”. The foresight of leaders in the early 20th century helped Japan to become a founding member of the International Astronomical Union. In this paper, a brief description will show the growth in its more recent history with particular emphasis on two important issues: large research facilities and women participation. On the ground or above, the large observational facilities are nowadays outside of the land of Japan, not only in terms of physical presence but also the community they serve. Domestic membership of the Astronomical Society of Japan at the same time is expanding, thanks to the increased opportunities for women. Continuing global cooperation with more diverse composition of members are the keys for sustaining the growth to carry the astronomy in Japan with IAU into the next century, and hopefully to another planet.

The physical evolution of low-mass protostars is relatively well-established, however, there are many open questions on the chemical structure of protostars. The chemical fingerprint generated in the early embedded phase of star formation may be transmitted to the later stages of star, planet and comet formation. The factors that influence the chemical fingerprint are then of interest to study, and determine whether the chemical structure is inherited from the parent cloud or product of the physical processes during star formation. Results of observations and modelling of molecules that trace the cold and warm extended structures of embedded protostars are briefly presented here. Two multiple protostellar systems are studied, IRAS 16293-2422 and VLA 1623-2417, both located in ρ Ophiuchus. We find that the physical structure of the protostars, that is the disk(-like) strucutres, outflow cavity and different luminosities, are important factors in determining the chemical structure of these embedded protostars.

Taking advantage of the Gaia DR1, we combined TGAS parallaxes with the Tycho-2 and APASS photometry to calculate the star formation history (SFH) of the solar neighbourhood within 250 pc using the colour-magnitude diagram fitting technique. Our dynamically-evolved SFH is in excellent agreement with that calculated from the Hipparcos catalogue within 80 pc of the Sun, showing an enhanced star formation rate (SFR) in the past ~4 Gyr. We then correct the SFR for the disc thickening with age to obtain a SFR that is representative of the whole solar cylinder, and show that even with an extreme correction our results are not consistent with an exponentially decreasing SFR as found by recent studies. Finally, we discuss how this technique can be applied out to ~5 kpc thanks to the next Gaia data releases, which will allow us to quantify the SFH of the thin disc, thick disc and halo in situ.

Investigations of H2O maser galaxies at X-ray energies reveal that most harbor highly absorbed AGN. Possible correlations between the intrinsic X-ray luminosity and the properties of water maser emission have been suggested. With the aim of looking into these correlations on a more solid statistical basis, we have search for maser emission in a well-defined sample of Compton-thick AGN. Here we report the results of the survey, which yielded a surprisingly high maser detection rate, with a particular focus on the newly discovered luminous water maser in the lenticular (field) S0 galaxy IRAS 15480-0344. Recently, VLBI observations have been obtained to image the line and continuum emission in the nucleus of this galaxy. The radio continuum emission at VLBI scales is resolved into two compact components that are interpreted as jet knots. Based on the single-dish profile, the variability of the maser emission, and the position of the maser spots with respect to these continuum sources, we favor of a jet/outflow origin for the maser emission, consistent with similar cases found in other radio-quiet AGN. This scenario is consistent with the hypothesis of the presence of strong nuclear winds recently invoked to explain the main characteristics of field S0 galaxies.

The main aim of this work is to study the frequency of extreme Space Weather events, in particular to analyse the tails of the daily averaged electron fluxes distribution function for different channels of energy between 0.249–1.192 MeV measured at ~ 600 km of altitude with the particle detector ICARE-NG/CARMEN-1 on board argentinian polar satellite SAC-D. An extreme value theory was applied to estimate the maximum values of the electron flux in the outer radiation belt for different return levels. We found that the cumulative distribution function of the extreme electron fluxes presents a finite upper limit in (1) the core of the outer radiation belt for the lower energy channels and (2) in the inner edge of the outer radiation belt for energy channels larger than 0.653 keV. The results presented in this work are important to characterise Space Weather conditions.

The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), formerly known as the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope, will be 200 years old in 2020. Also, South Africa (SA), formerly a British colony known as the Cape of Good Hope, will celebrate her 100-year anniversary as an International Astronomical Union (IAU) member in 2020, following the IAU centenary in 2019 that this IAU Symposium 349 celebrates. In light of all this, particularly in anticipation of the 200-year anniversary of SAAO in 2020, the SA National Research Foundation (NRF) has developed a Roadmap for the History of Astronomy in South Africa. As part of this we are conducting an oral history of astronomers to complement the historical celebrations of the institutions and science relating to astronomy in SA, supported by the SA NRF. Primarily drawing on literature and setting the scene for this work, here we present a snippet of the on-going oral histories, to glean the role of the IAU in astronomy in South Africa and show the potential of the oral histories to inform and complement written history.

CN emission lines are among the brightest, and have been observed in the last 20 years with single dish observations. With modern interferometers, we are now able to spatially resolve CN emission, which often shows ring-like structures. We investigate whether such structures trace the morphology of the disks, or if they have a chemical origin. By using the thermochemical code DALI, we conclude that CN formation is triggered by the existence of vibrationally excited H2*, produced by FUV pumping of H2. Herbig stars therefore generally have larger rings and higher CN fluxes than TTauri. Disks with higher masses and flaring also show stronger CN emission and larger rings. CN observations could in the future provide important constraints on some important disk physical parameters. The results of the models are well consistent with the spatially resolved CN observations to-date available.

The spectroscopic analysis of red giant stars is hampered by difficulties in determining the surface gravity, log g. The presence of degeneracies, few lines sensitive to log g, limited spectral coverage and bad signal-to-noise, can affect the precision and accuracy of log g and, as a consequence, the quality of the element abundances. We show how the adoption of the seismic surface gravity can improve the spectroscopic analysis of red giants. As examples, we adopted the seismic gravity in the analysis of spectra taken by two different surveys: GES (high resolution) and RAVE (intermediate resolution). The results of this technique were the lifting of the log g-Teff degeneracy and more accurate and precise atmospheric parameters and abundances.

The tortuous journey from theoretical suspicions to direct detection of gravitational waves took a hundred years and followed a crooked course. The field equations of general relativity evidently have wave-like solutions, but physical reality of these implied waves was doubted by many — including Einstein himself — for nearly fifty years. The question of physical reality was settled theoretically by the late 1950s, but for several more decades serious questions remained about what types of astrophysical systems might generate gravitational waves, and with what energies. The discovery of binary pulsar PSR B1913+16 led to dedicated development of much more accurate pulsar timing techniques, and results of these experiments motivated further theoretical work to clear up the quantitative questions about energy generation. By the late 1980s the generation of gravitational waves by the Hulse-Taylor binary pulsar was firmly established to be in quantitative agreement with general relativity. This experimental proof was almost surely a prerequisite for the funding of LIGO, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, in 1992, which after nearly another quarter century achieved the first direct detection of gravitational waves.

The solar active region (AR) 12192 was one of the most flare productive region of solar cycle 24, which produced many X-class flares; the most energetic being an X3.1 flare on October 24, 2014 at 21:10 UT. Customarily, such events are believed to be triggered by magnetic reconnection in coronal magnetic fields. Here we use the vector magnetograms from solar photosphere, obtained from Heliospheric Magnetic Imager (HMI) to investigate the magnetic field topology prior to the X3.1 event, and ascertain the conditions that might have caused the flare. To infer the coronal magnetic field, a novel non-force-free field (NFFF) extrapolation technique of the photospheric field is used, which suitably mimics the Lorentz forces present in the photospheric plasma. We also highlight the presence of magnetic null points and quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs) in the magnetic field topology, which are preferred sites for magnetic reconnections and discuss the probable reconnection scenarios.

High-precision abundances of elements have been derived from HARPS-N spectra of F and G main-sequence stars having ages determined from oscillation frequencies delivered by the Kepler mission. The tight relations between abundance ratios of refractory elements, e.g., [Mg/Fe] and [Y/Mg], and stellar age previously found for solar twin stars are confirmed. These relations provide new information on nucleosynthesis and Galactic evolution. Abundance ratios between volatile and refractory elements, e.g., [C/Fe] and [O/Fe], show on the other hand a significant scatter at a given age, which may be related to planet-star interactions. This is a potential problem for chemical tagging studies.

Fifty years of pulsars also mean fifty years of using them as tools to probe other phenomena and physics. One prominent example is the usage of pulsars to test theories of gravity. Probing the quasi-stationary strong-field regime, pulsars allow high precision tests that will maintain their importance even in the era of gravitation wave observations with ground-based detectors. This contribution summarise the methods and status of the field and provides a brief outlook into the future.

It has been established that Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) may have significant impact on terrestrial magnetic field and lead to space weather events. In the present study, we selected several CMEs which are associated with filament eruptions on the Sun. We attempt to identify the presence of filament material within ICME at 1AU. We discuss how different ICMEs associated with filaments lead to moderate or major geomagnetic activity on their arrival at the Earth. Our study also highlights the difficulties in identifying the filament material at 1AU within isolated and in interacting CMEs.
