We test whether Be star disks rotate in a Keplerian or an Angular Momentum Conserving fashion. This is done by employing sub-milli arcsecond spectroastrometry around Hα. We spatially resolve the disks, and are the first to do so at such a high spectral resolution. We fit the emission line profiles with parametric models. The Keplerian models reproduce the spectro-astrometry, whereas the AMC models do not, thereby supporting the viscous disk model for Be stars.

The migration of protoplanets in discs not only depends on the thermodynamics of the ambient disc but also on the orbital parameters of the embedded planet. In the fully radiative regime, planets can migrate outward if their orbital parameters fit in a very small range. We simulate planets in fully radiative discs (and isothermal discs - for reference) and determine the influence of the orbital parameters (a, e and i) and the planetary mass on the migration time scale and direction.

We present spectropolarimetric observations of the B[e] supergiant star GG Car at two epochs. Polarization line effects along Hα are analysed using the Q–U diagram. In particular, the polarization position angle (PA) obtained using the line effect allows to constrain the symmetry axis of the disk/envelope. The depolarization line effect around Hα is evident in the Q–U diagram for both epochs, confirming that light from the system is intrinsically polarized. A rotation of the PA along Hα is also observed, indicating a counter-clockwise rotating disk. The intrinsic PA calculated using the line effect (~85°) is consistent between our two epochs, suggesting a clearly defined symmetry axis of the disk.

A close-in massive planet affects the angular momentum of its host star through tidal and magnetic interactions. The transiting planets allow us to study the distribution of the spin and orbital angular momenta in star-planet systems. Considering a sample of about 70 systems, we find that stars having an effective temperature between 6000 and 6700 K and a rotation period shorter than 10 days show a rotation synchronized with the orbit of their hot Jupiters or have a rotation period twice the orbital period of their planets. Such rotational behaviours cannot be explained on the basis of tidal interactions alone. Besides, the gyrochronology relationship for those systems holds if an angular momentum loss rate smaller by about 30 percent than in stars without hot Jupiters is assumed.

New spectra of MWC314 are presented; they indicate that the V/R emission line flux ratios show signs of varying in an opposite way to the absorption line radial velocities. The latter appear to be due to apparently non-periodic pulsations, perhaps in strange modes.

Different migration scenario of two giant planets may play a major role in forming the diverse resonant planetary configurations. The studies on the HD 128311 and HD 73526 systems show that two gas giants are captured in a 2:1 resonance but not in apsidal corotation, because one of the resonant argument circulates over the dynamical evolution. Herein we explore potential scenarios to produce the 2:1 librating-circulating resonance configuration. In the simulations, we find that both colliding or scattering events at early stage of dynamical evolution can induce the configurations trapped into resonance. In this sense, the librating-circulating resonance configuration is more likely to form by a hybrid mechanism of scattering and collision.

We present interferometric observations of the Be star ζ Tau obtained using the MIRC beam combiner at the CHARA Array during four epochs in 2007–2009. Fitting a geometric model to the data reveals a nearly edge-on disk with a FWHM of ~1.8 milli-arcsec in the H-band. The non-zero closure phases indicate an asymmetry in the brightness distribution. Interestingly, when combining our results with previously published interferometric observations of ζ Tau, we find a correlation between the position angle of the disk and the spectroscopic V/R ratio, suggesting that the tilt of the disk might be precessing. This work is part of a multi-year monitoring campaign to investigate the development and outward motion of asymmetric structures in the disks of Be stars.

A new monochromatic imaging and spectral synthesis package for Be stars, based on the bedisk code, is introduced. Example images and spectra are given for for H i and Fe ii. Predicted Fe ii equivalents widths are also compared to recent observations by Arias et al. (2006) and show good agreement, although only for very dense disks.

In a recently published paper Matsumura et al. (2010) (hereafter M10), we have studied the evolution of three-planet systems in dissipating gas disks by using a hybrid N-body and one-dimensional gas disk evolution code. In this article, we highlight some results which are only briefly mentioned in M10.

We discuss the origin of the hard X-rays in γ Cas and its analogs. Of great importance are their temporal correlations with optical/UV signatures, suggesting an origin near the Be star.

Studies of the structure and evolution of protoplanetary disks are important for understanding star and planet formation. Here, we present the direct image of an interacting binary protoplanetary system. Both circumprimary and circumsecondary disks are resolved in the near-infrared. There is a bridge of infrared emission connecting the two disks and a long spiral arm extending from the circumprimary disk. Numerical simulations show that the bridge corresponds to gas flow and a shock wave caused by the collision of gas rotating around the primary and secondary stars. Fresh material streams along the spiral arm, consistent with the theoretical scenarios where gas is replenished from a circummultiple reservoir.

We investigate the motion of a two-planet coplanar system under the combined effects of mutual interaction and tidal dissipation. The secular behavior of the system is analyzed using two different approaches, restricting to the case of a more massive outer planet. First, we solve the exact equations of motion through the numerical simulation of the system evolution. We also compute the stationary solutions of the mean equations of motion based on a Hamiltonian formalism. An application to the real system CoRoT-7 is investigated.

Optical and IR spectra, optical to sub-mm photometry, visual imaging polarimetry, and IR high-resolution spectro-interferometry are being used to monitor the new outburst of 28 CMa, which started in 2008 and so far closely resembles previous ones. First modeling based on viscous decretion and focused on constraining the disk viscosity parameter, α, is presented.

We present the photometric analysis of 4 transits of the exoplanet WASP-4b, obtained with the Baade 6.5m telescope, one of the two Magellan telescopes at Las Campanas. The light curves have a photometric precision of 0.5 mmag and a time sampling of 30s. This high precision has allowed us to detect several “spot anomalies”: temporary brightenings due to the occultation of a starspot on the transit chord. By analyzing these anomalies we find the sky-projected stellar obliquity to be λ = 1°+12°−14°. The small value suggests that the planet migration mechanism preserved the initially low obliquity, or that tidal evolution has realigned the system.

The region of the hot end of the main-sequence is hosting pulsating stars of different types and flavours. Pulsations are not only observed for Slowly pulsating B stars (mid to late B-type stars; high order g-modes) and β Cephei stars (early B-type stars; low order p/g-modes) but are also causing variability in Be stars and OB-supergiants. In this review we give an overview of the asteroseismic observations that are currently available for these types of stars. The first asteroseismic results were solely based on ground-based observations. Recently, the arrival of space-based data gathered by space missions like most, corot and kepler has led to important discoveries for massive stars, highlighting their excellent asteroseismic potential. We show that, despite the unprecedented precision of the space-based data, there is still a clear need for ground-based follow-up observations.

Outward migration of planets due to Roche lobe overflow may play an important role in producing the presently observed distribution of planet parameters. We suggest that many of the currently known short period planets may have already migrated into the Roche distance from the star, and then deposited at their current semi-major axes by being migrated outwards due to angular momentum transfer from an episode of Roche lobe overflow (RLO). This RLO outward migration (RLOOM) could be sustained in the region where planetary radius increases with decreasing mass. We are modeling how RLOOM may leave what kind of planet parameter statistics. This modeling seeks to predict what observable signs of RLOOM there may be. Overflow of planetary mass may leave behind characteristic hot dust and gas as well as produce luminous signatures.

Photometry of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars obtained with the first Canadian space telescope MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of STars) has revealed multimode oscillations mainly in continuum light that suggest stellar pulsations could be a significant contributing factor to the mass-loss rates. Since the first clear detection of a pulsation period of P = 9.8h in WR123, two other stars have also shown periods of a few days, which must be related to stellar pulsations.

The corot and kepler space missions are collecting very high-precision long-duration photometric data of many Be stars, allowing us to better understand the origin of their short-term variability and the link between these variations and the Be phenomenon. In this paper, we present a brief summary of the results obtained in the analysis of several Be stars observed with corot in terms of pulsations. In addition, we show that variations of the Be star HD 175869 can be explained as two active regions separated by 150 degrees or as unstable pulsating modes in a star with an extensive mixing in radiative layers corresponding to a core overshooting of 0.35Hp. A preliminary study of the photometric and spectroscopic variability seen in the B1.5IVe star HD 51193 is performed. Currently the kepler satellite is observing the only confirmed Be star in its field of view, namely KIC 6954726. From low-resolution spectra we derived a spectral type of B2.5Ve for this star and we studied the long-term variation of the emission in the Hα line. The 3.5-year kepler light curve will allow us to detect even more close frequencies than with corot and to perform a detailed analysis of the amplitude variations in a Be star.

We performed 3D MHD numerical simulations of planet migration in stratified disks using the Godunov code PLUTO (Mignone et al. 2007). The disk is invaded by turbulence generated by the magnetorotational instability (MRI). We study the migration for planets with different mass to primary mass ratio. The migration of the low-mass planet (q=Mp/Ms=10−5) is dominated by random fluctuations in the torque and there is no defined direction of migration on timescales of 100 orbits. The intermediate-mass planet (q=Mp/Ms=10−4) can experience systematic outwards migration that was sustained for the times we were able to simulate.
