Synoptic Sun-as-a-star observations are carried out with the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument (PEPSI), which receives light from the Solar Disk-Integration (SDI) telescope. Daily spectra are produced with a high signal-to-noise ratio, providing access to unprecedented quasi-continuous, long-term, disk-integrated spectra of the Sun with high spectral and temporal resolution. We developed tools to monitor and study solar activity on different time-scales ranging from daily changes, over periods related to solar rotation, to annual and decadal trends. Strong chromospheric absorption lines, such as the Ca ii H & K λ3934 & 3968 Å lines, are powerful diagnostic tools for solar activity studies, since they trace the variations of the solar magnetic field. Other lines, such as Hα λ6563 Å line and the near-infrared (NIR) Ca ii λ8542 Å line, provide additional information on the physical properties in this highly complex and dynamic atmospheric layer. Currently, we work on a data pipeline for extraction, calibration, and analysis of the PEPSI/SDI data. We compare the SDI data with daily spectra from the Integrated Sunlight Spectrometer (ISS), which is part of the Synoptic Long-Term Investigation of the Sun (SOLIS) facility operated by the U.S. National Solar Observatory (NSO). This facilitates cross-calibration and validation of the SDI data.

Variations of the total solar irradiance (TSI) over long periods of time provide natural Earth-climate forcing and are thus important to monitor. Variations over a solar cycle are at the 0.1 % level. Variations on multi-decadal to century timescales are (fortunately for our climate stability) very small, which drives the need for highly-accurate and stable measurements over correspondingly long periods of time to discern any such irradiance changes. Advances to TSI-measuring space-borne instruments are approaching the desired climate-driven measurement accuracies and on-orbit stabilities. I present a summary of the modern-instrument improvements enabling these measurements and present some of the solar-variability measurement results from recent space-borne instruments, including TSI variations on timescales from solar flares and large-scale convection to solar cycles.

The Compact Lightweight Absolute Radiometer (CLARA) is orbiting Earth on-board the Norwegian NorSat-1 micro-satellite since 14th of July 2017. The first light total solar irradiance (TSI) measurement result of CLARA is 1360.18 W m−2 for the so far single reliable Channel B. Channel A and C measured significantly lower (higher) TSI values and were found being sensitive to satellite pointing instabilities. These channels most likely suffer from electrical interference between satellite components and CLARA, an effect that is currently under investigation. Problems with the satellite attitude control currently inhibit stable pointing of CLARA to the Sun.

We analyzed the statistical properties of starspots on solar-type stars and the correlation between properties of starspots and flare activity using observations from the Kepler mission. We found the size distribution of starspots on solar-type stars shows the power-law distribution and both size distributions of starspots on slowly-rotating solar-type stars and of relatively large sunspots are roughly lie on the same power-law line. We also found that the frequency-energy distributions for superflares and solar flares from spots with different sizes are the same for solar-type stars and the Sun. These results suggest that the magnetic activity on solar-type stars and that on the Sun are caused by the same physical processes

We present initial results from three-dimensional (3-D) radiation hydrodynamical simulations for the Sun and targeted Sun-like stars. We plan to extend these simulations up to several stellar days to study p-mode excitation and damping processes. The level of variation of irradiance on the time scales spanned by our 3-D simulations will be studied too. Here we show results from a first analysis of the computational data we produced so far.

The theme of this focus meeting is related to the detection, characterization and modeling of nano particles — cosmic dust of sizes of roughly 1 to 100 nm — in space environments like the interstellar medium, planetary debris disks, the heliosphere, the vicinity of the Sun and planetary atmospheres, and the space near Earth. Discussions focus on nano dust that forms from condensations and collisions and from planetary objects, as well as its interactions with space plasmas like the solar and stellar winds, atmospheres and magnetospheres. A particular goal is to bring together space scientists, astronomers, astrophysicists, and laboratory experimentalists and combine their knowledge to reach cross fertilization of different disciplines.
