In this note, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for a flat map of (commutative) rings to be a flat epimorphism. Flat epimorphisms φ:A → B(i.e.φ is an epimorphism in the category of rings, and the ring B is flat as an A-module) have been studied by several authors in different forms. Flat epimorphisms generalize many of the results that hold for localizations with respect to a multiplicatively closed set (see, for example [6]).In a geometric formulation, D. Lazard [3, Chapitre IV, Proposition 2.5] has shown that isomorphism classes of flat epimorphisms from a ring A are in 1-1 correspondence with those subsets of Spec A such that the sheaf structure induced from the canonical sheaf structure of Spec A yields an affine scheme. N. Popescu and T. Spircu [4, Théorème 2.7] have given a characterization for a ring homomorphism to be a flat epimorphism, but our characterization, under the assumption of flatness is easier to apply. For corollaries, we can obtain known results due to D. Lazard, T. Akiba, and M. F. Jones, and generalize a geometric theorem of D. Ferrand.

Let B(H) be the algebra of bounded linear operators on a complex separable Hilbert space H. The problem of operator approximation is to determine how closely each operator T ∈B(H) can be approximated in the norm by operators in a subset L of B(H). This problem is initiated by P. R. Halmo [3] when heconsidered approximating operators by the positive ones. Since then, this problem has been attacked with various classes L: the class of normal operators whose spectrum is included in a fixed nonempty closed subset of the complex plane [4], the classes of unitary operators [6] and invertible operators [1]. The purpose of this paper is to study the approximation by partial isometries.

AHeyting algebra is an algebra H;∨,∧ →, 0,1) of type (2,2,2,0,0) for which H;∨,∧,0,1) is a bounded distributive lattice and → is the binary operation of relative pseudocomplementation (i.e., for a,b,c∈H,ac ∧≦birr c≦a→b). Associated with every subalgebra of a Heyting algebra is a separating set. Those corresponding to maximal subalgebras are characterized in Proposition 8 and, subsequently, are used in an investigation of Heyting algebras.

A simple, but nice theorem of Banach states that the variation of a continuous function F:[a, b]→ ℝ is given by where t(y) is defined as the number of x ∈ [a, b[ for which F(x)= y (see, e.g., [1], VIII.5, Th. 3). In this paper we essentially derive a similar representation for the variation of F′ which also yields a criterion for a function to be an integral of a function of bounded variation. The proof given here is quite elementary, though long and somewhat intriciate.

The Ehrenfeucht Conjecture [5] states that if Μ is a finitely generated free monoid with nonempty subset S, then there is a finite subset T⊂S (a “test set”) such that given two endomorphisms f and g on Μ, f and g agree on S if and only if they agree on T. In[4], the authors prove that the above conjecture is equivalent to the following conjecture: a system of equations in a finite number of unknowns in Μ is equivalent to a finite subsystem. Since a finitely generated free monoid embeds naturally into the free group with the same number of generators, it is natural to ask whether a free group of finite rank has the above property on systems of equations. A restatement of the question motivates the following.

We consider the one-dimensional operator,

on 0<x<∞ with . The coefficients p, V1 and V2 are assumed to be real, locally Lebesgue integrable functions; c1 and c2 are positive numbers. The operator L acts in the Hilbert space H of all equivalence classes of complex vector-value functions such that . L has domain D(L) consisting of ally∈H such that y is locally absolutely continuous and Ly∈H; thus in the language of differential operators L is a maximal operator. Associated with L is the minimal operator L0 defined as the closure of where is the restriction of L to the functions with compact support in (0,∞).

If G is a one-relator group on at least 3 generators, or is a one-relator group with torsion on at least 2 generators, then it follows from results in [1] and [6] that G has a subgroup of finite index which can be mapped homomorphically onto F2, the free group of rank 2. In the language of [2], G is equally as large as F2, written G⋍F2.

The study of extreme, strongly exposed points of closed, convex and bounded sets in Banach spaces has been developed especially by the interconnection of the Radon–Nikodým property with the geometry of closed, convex and bounded subsets of Banach spaces [5],[2] . In the theory of ordered Banach spaces as well as in the Choquet theory, [4], we are interested in the study of a special type of convex sets, not necessarily bounded, namely the bases for the positive cone. In [7] the geometry (extreme points, dentability) of closed and convex subsets K of a Banach space X with the Radon-Nikodým property is studied and special emphasis has been given to the case where K is a base for acone P of X. In [6, Theorem 1], it is proved that an infinite-dimensional, separable, locally solid lattice Banach space is order-isomorphic to l1 if, and only if, X has the Krein–Milman property and its positive cone has a bounded base.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new kind of weighted hyperplane mean for subharmonic functions and to use this mean in giving results on the harmonic majorization of subharmonic functions of restricted growth in half-spaces.

Let S be a semigroup. An element a of S is called right (resp. left) regular if a=a2x (resp. a=xa2) for some x∈S. If a is regular and right (resp. left) regular, a is called strongly right (resp. left) regular. As is well known, if a is strongly regular (i.e., right and left regular) then it is regular, more precisely, there exists uniquely an element x such that a= a2x,x= x2a and ax=xa, and a is contained in a subgroup of S (and conversely).

Throughout this paper X will be a finite connected CW-complex of dimension m, and ξ will be a real (n + l)-plane bundle over X(n >0) equipped with a Riemannian metric. We aim to give a systematic account of the space ГSξ of sections of the sphere-bundle Sξ.

In a recent paper [2], D. Colton has given a new proof for the strong maximum principle with regard to the heat equation ut = Δu. His proof depends on the analyticity (in x) of solutions. For this reason it does not carry over to the equation

or to more general equations. But in order to tread mildly nonlinear equations such asut = Δu + f(u) which are important in many applications, it is essential to have the strong maximum principle at least for equation (*). It should also be said that this proof uses nontrivial facts about the heat equation.

In [7] Plemelj established some fundamental results in two- and three-dimensional potential theory about the eigenvalues of both the double layer potential operator and its adjoint, the normal derivative of the single layer potential operator. In [3] Blumenfeld and Mayer established some additional results concerning the eigenvalues of these integral operators in the case of ℝ2. The spectral properties established by Plemelj [7] and by Blumenfeld and Mayer [3] have had a profound effect in the area of integral equation methods in scattering and potential theory in both ℝ2 and ℝ3.

A C*-algebra A is said to be approximately finite dimensional (AF) if it is the inductive limit of a sequence of finite dimensional C*-algebras(see [2], [5]). It is said to be nuclear if, for each C*-algebra B, there is a unique C*-norm on the *-algebraic tensor product A ⊗B [11]. Since finite dimensional C*-algebras are nuclear, and inductive limits of nuclear C*-algebras are nuclear [16];,every AF C*-algebra is nuclear. The family of nuclear C*-algebras is a large and well-behaved class (see [12]). The AF C*-algebras for a particularly tractable sub-class which has been completely classified in terms of the invariant K0 [7], [5].

In [2], R. Arthan and S. Bullett pose the problem of representing generators of the complex bordism ring MU* by manifolds which are totally normally split; i.e. whose stable normal bundles are split into a sum of complex line bundles. This has recently been solved by Ochanine and Schwartz [8] who use a mixture of J-theory and surgery theory to establish several results, including the following.

Throughout this paper D denotes a division ring with centre F and n a positive integer. A subgroup G of GL(n,D) is absolutely irreducible if the F-subalgebra F[G] enerated by G is the full matrix ring Dn ×n. It is completely reducible (resp. irreducible) if row n-space Dn over D is completely reducible (resp. irreducible), as D–G bimodule in the obvious way. Absolutely irreducible skew linear groups have a more restricted structure than irreducible skew linear groups, see for example [7],[8], [8] and [10]. Here we make a start on elucidating the structure of locally nilpotent suchgroups.

The notion of transversality has proved of immense value in differential topology. The Thom transversality lemma and its many variants show that transversality is a dense,and often open, property. In one parameter families the occurrence of non-transversality is inevitable; for example one cannot pull two linked curves in ℝ3 apart without a non transverse intersection. The aim of this note is to prove the following. In any generic family of mappings each map in the family fails to satisfy some fixed transversality conditions at worst at isolated points, and even at these points in rather special sorts of way. So, returning to the above example, given two space curves C1 and C2 without a (necessarily non-transverse) intersection we expect, in any genericisotopy of C2, that it will meet C1 if at all, at isolated points In particular generically we do not expect C1 and C2, any time, to have an arc in common
