The existence of mild solutions to the non-convex Cauchy problem

is investigated. Here A is the infinitesimal generator of a C0-semigroup in a reflexive and separable Banach space , F is a Pompeiu–Hausdorff lower semicontinuous multifunction whose values are closed convex and bounded sets with non-empty interior contained in , and ∂F(t, x(t)) denotes the boundary of F(t, x(t)). Our approach is based on the Baire category method, with appropriate modifications which are actually necessary because, under our assumptions, the underlying metric space that naturally enters in the Baire method, i.e. the solution set of the convexified Cauchy problem (CF), can fail to be a complete metric space.

Let A be a finite group acting fixed-point freely on a finite (solvable) group G. A longstanding conjecture is that if (|G|, |A|) = 1, then the Fitting length of G is bounded by the length of the longest chain of subgroups of A. It is expected that the conjecture is true when the coprimeness condition is replaced by the assumption that A is nilpotent. We establish the conjecture without the coprimeness condition in the case where A is an abelian group whose order is a product of three odd primes and where the Sylow 2-subgroups of G are abelian.

We use induction and interpolation techniques to prove that a composition operator induced by a map ϕ is bounded on the weighted Bergman space of the right half-plane if and only if ϕ fixes the point at ∞ non-tangentially and if it has a finite angular derivative λ there. We further prove that in this case the norm, the essential norm and the spectral radius of the operator are all equal and are given by λ(2+α)/2.

We apply the techniques of symmetric generation to establish the standard presentations of the finite simply laced irreducible finite Coxeter groups, that is, the Coxeter groups of types An, Dn and En, and show that these are naturally arrived at purely through consideration of certain natural actions of symmetric groups. We go on to use these techniques to provide explicit representations of these groups.

We consider large-time behaviour of global solutions of the Cauchy problem for a parabolic equation with a supercritical nonlinearity. It is known that the solution is global and unbounded if the initial value is bounded by a singular steady state and decays slowly. In this paper we show that the grow-up of solutions can be arbitrarily slow if the initial value is chosen appropriately.

A conjecture of Gromov states that a one-ended word-hyperbolic group must contain a subgroup that is isomorphic to the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface. Recent papers by Gordon and Wilton and by Kim and Wilton give sufficient conditions for hyperbolic surface groups to be embedded in a hyperbolic Baumslag double G. Using Nielsen cancellation methods based on techniques from previous work by the second author, we prove that a hyperbolic orientable surface group of genus 2 is embedded in a hyperbolic Baumslag double if and only if the amalgamated word W is a commutator: that is, W = [U, V] for some elements U, V ∈ F. Furthermore, a hyperbolic Baumslag double G contains a non-orientable surface group of genus 4 if and only if W = X2Y2 for some X, Y ∈ F. G can contain no non-orientable surface group of smaller genus.

We discuss the problem of the regularity-in-time of the map t ↦ Tt ∊ Lp(ℝd, ℝd; σ), where Tt is a transport map (optimal or not) from a reference measure σ to a measure μt which lies along an absolutely continuous curve t ↦ μt in the space (). We prove that in most cases such a map is no more than 1/p-Hölder continuous.

Let A be a C*-algebra and let ΘA be the canonical contraction form the Haagerup tensor product of M(A) with itself to the space of completely bounded maps on A. In this paper we consider the following conditions on A: (a) A is a finitely generated module over the centre of M(A); (b) the image of ΘA is equal to the set E(A) of all elementary operators on A; and (c) the lengths of elementary operators on A are uniformly bounded. We show that A satisfies (a) if and only if it is a finite direct sum of unital homogeneous C*-algebras. We also show that if a separable A satisfies (b) or (c), then A is necessarily subhomogeneous and the C*-bundles corresponding to the homogeneous subquotients of A must be of finite type.

Let Γ be a graph and let G be a vertex-transitive subgroup of the full automorphism group Aut(Γ) of Γ. The graph Γ is called G-normal if G is normal in Aut(Γ). In particular, a Cayley graph Cay(G, S) on a group G with respect to S is normal if the Cayley graph is R(G)-normal, where R(G) is the right regular representation of G. Let T be a non-abelian simple group and let G = Tℓ with ℓ ≥ 1. We prove that if every connected T-vertex-transitive cubic symmetric graph is T-normal, then every connected G-vertex-transitive cubic symmetric graph is G-normal. This result, among others, implies that a connected cubic symmetric Cayley graph on G is normal except for T ≅ A47 and a connected cubic G-symmetric graph is G-normal except for T ≅ A7, A15 or PSL(4, 2).

The set of non-constant holomorphic mappings between two given compact Riemann surfaces of genus greater than 1 is always finite. This classical statement was made by de Franchis. Furthermore, bounds on the cardinality of the set depending only on the genera of the surfaces have been obtained by a number of mathematicians. The analysis is carried over in this paper to the case of Riemann surfaces of finite analytic type (i.e. compact Riemann surfaces minus a finite set of points) so that the finiteness result, together with a crude but explicit bound depending only on the topological data, may be extended for the number of holomorphic mappings between such surfaces.

Continuing earlier studies over the real numbers, we study the expressible set of a sequence A = (an)n≥1 of p-adic numbers, which we define to be the set EpA = {∑n≥1ancn: cn ∈ ℕ}. We show that in certain circumstances we can calculate the Haar measure of EpA exactly. It turns out that our results extend to sequences of matrices with p-adic entries, so this is the setting in which we work.

Let G be a finite group, let p be a prime divisor of the order of G and let k(G) be the number of conjugacy classes of G. By disregarding at most finitely many non-solvable p-solvable groups G, we have with equality if and only if if is an integer, and CG(Cp) = Cp. This extends earlier work of Héthelyi, Külshammer, Malle and Keller.

Recent research of the author has studied edge-labelled directed trees under a natural multiplication operation. The class of all such trees (with a fixed labelling alphabet) has an algebraic interpretation, as a free object in the class of adequate semigroups. We consider here a natural subclass of these trees, defined by placing a restriction on edge orientations, and show that the resulting algebraic structure is a free object in the class of left adequate semigroups. Through this correspondence we establish some structural and algorithmic properties of free left adequate semigroups and monoids, and consequently of the category of all left adequate semigroups.

We give a simple proof of the Lalonde–McDuff Conjecture for aspherical manifolds.

We find new properties for the space R(X), introduced by Soria in the study of the best constant for the Hardy operator minus the identity. In particular, we characterize when R(X) coincides with the minimal Lorentz space Λ(X). The condition that R(X) ≠ {0} is also described in terms of the embedding (L1, ∞ ∩ L∞) ⊂ X. Finally, we also show the existence of a minimal rearrangement-invariant Banach function space (RIBFS) X among those for which R(X) ≠ {0} (which is the RIBFS envelope of the quasi-Banach space L1, ∞ ∩ L∞).

If we let a = 1 and b = 0, then gk,a,b becomes the arithmetic function that was previously introduced by Farhi. Farhi proved that gk,1,0 is periodic and that k! is a period. Hong and Yang improved Farhi's period k! to lcm(1, 2, … , k) and conjectured that (lcm(1, 2, … , k, k + 1))/(k + 1) divides the smallest period of gk,1,0. Recently, Farhi and Kane proved this conjecture and determined the smallest period of gk,1,0. For the general integers a ≥ 1 and b ≥ 0, it is natural to ask the following interesting question: is gk,a,b periodic? If so, what is the smallest period of gk,a,b? We first show that the arithmetic function gk,a,b is periodic. Subsequently, we provide detailed p-adic analysis of the periodic function gk,a,b. Finally, we determine the smallest period of gk,a,b. Our result extends the Farhi–Kane Theorem from the set of positive integers to general arithmetic progressions.

We study closed Einstein–Weyl structures on compact K-contact, Sasakian and cosymplectic manifolds. In particular we prove that compact Sasakian and cosymplectic manifolds endowed with a closed Einstein–Weyl structure are η-Einstein.
