X-ray powder diffraction data for two ionic salts containing imidazole (Him) complexes of the magnesium(II) ion, [Mg(Him)4(H2O)2]Cl2 and [Mg(Him)6](NO3)2, are reported. Their crystal and molecular structures were determined by simulated annealing and full-profile Rietveld refinement methods. [Mg(Him)4(H2O)2]Cl2 was found to crystallize in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c, a=12.3980(3) Å, b=11.0234(2) Å, c=14.4691(3) Å, and β=107.024(1)°. [Mg(Him)6](NO3)2 crystallizes in the trigonal R-3 space group with a=b=12.4631(4) Å and c=14.9449(6)Å. Both species contain centrosymmetric complexes, and Mg is octahedrally coordinated by six imidazoles, as in [Mg(Him)6](NO3)2, or by four imidazoles and two water molecules, as in [Mg(Him)4(H2O)2]Cl2. Additional analytic, thermogravimetric, calorimetric, and spectroscopic characterizations were also performed.

The indexed X-ray diffraction powder data of trans-bis(dimethylphenylphosphine)bis(pyrazole)platinum, {Pt(C3H4N2)2[P(CH3)2(C6H5)]2, PTPP} and trans-(tricyclohexylphosphino) (triethylphosphino) platinum(II) chloride, (PtCl2P2C24H48, PTHE) are reported. PTPP crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c and PTHE crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pcab. The refined cell parameters were determined by employing a Siemens Debye-Scherrer camera (Fe radiation, λmean = 1.93736 Å). The cell constants are a = 21.516(5), b = 6.287(1), c = 17.929(4)Å, β = 102.51(1)°, V = 2367.7Å3 Dx=1.70Mg m−3, Dm = 1.70Mg m−3 for PTPP and a = 12.271(1), b = 19.375(1), c = 23.864(3)Å, V = 5673.4Å3, Dx = 1.553Mg m−3 for PTHE. The quantitative figures of merit (FN) are F23 = 47(0.010,51) [F20 = 60(0.009,35)] for PTPP and F30 = 12(0.008,324) [F20 = 27(0.017,105)] for PTHE. The JCPD S Diffraction File No. for PTPP is 37-1999 and for PTHE is 37-2000.

A useful procedure is described to rapidly obtain Bragg-reflection intensities from the FULLPROF suite, and the Bragg intensities can then be input into the GEST and the PECKCRYST programs for crystal-structure determination of small molecules. An example on using the new procedure for the structure determination from powder diffraction determination of hydrochlorothiazide (C7H8ClN3O4S2) is presented, and the powder-structure results obtained by the PECKCRYST program are in good agreement with previously reported single-crystal results.

Lattice thermal expansion of a number of compositions in the tetragonal (P4mm) single cell region of the lead zirconate titanate Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 system have been measured by high temperature X-ray diffraction. Polynomial coefficients which describe the temperature dependence of the lattice constants of each composition below and above the ferroelectric-paraelectric transition temperature are given.

X-ray powder diffraction data and refined unit cell parameters for three compounds found during experimental determination of the BaO:Fe2O3:TiO2 phase diagram are reported here. All three phases crystallize in space group C2/m (No. 12). Ba2Fe2Ti4O13 (“2:1:4”) is isostructural with K2Ti6O13 and Ba2ZnTi5O13: a=15.1939(9), b=3.8912(3), c=9.1244(5) Å, β=98.456(5)°; Z=2, ρcalc=4.890 g/cc. Ba3Fe10TiO20 (“3:5:1”) is structurally analogous to its aluminum congener Ba3Al10TiO20: a=15.336(1), b=11.7986(9), c=5.1700(4) Å, β=91.220(6)° (I2/m setting); Z=2, ρcalc=4.750 g/cc. Ba4Fe2Ti10O27 (“4:1:10”) is also isostructural with its aluminum analog Ba4Al2Ti10O27: a=19.799(1), b=11.4324(6), c=9.8936(6) Å, β=109.146(4)° (C2/m); Z=4, ρcalc=4.934 g/cc. The 2:1:4 and 3:5:1 compounds adopt open-framework type structures while the 4:1:10 phase exhibits an eight-layer close-packed arrangement.

The triplite LiFeSO4F displays both the highest potential ever reported for an Fe-based compound, as well as a comparable specific energy with that of popular LiFePO4. The synthesis is still a challenge because the present approaches are connected with long time, special equipments or organic reagents, etc. In this work, the triplite LiFeSO4F powder was synthesized through an ambient two-step solid-state route. The reaction process and phase purity were analyzed, coupled with structure refinement and electrochemical test.

The crystal structure of besifloxacin hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Besifloxacin hydrochloride crystallizes in space group P1 (#1) with a = 5.36596(8), b = 10.3234(4), c = 17.9673(14) Å, α = 98.122(5), β = 92.9395(9), γ = 96.1135(3)°, V = 977.483(13) Å3, and Z = 2. The crystal structure is approximately centrosymmetric. Strong N–H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds form a corrugated ladder-like chain along the a-axis. The carboxylic acid group in each independent cation acts as the donor in a strong intramolecular O–H⋯O hydrogen bond to an adjacent carbonyl group. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

A precise X-ray powder diffraction pattern of the orthorhombic form of InVO4, InVO4-III, was obtained using a Huber camera with CuKα1 radiation (λ=1.5406 Å) and Si as internal standard (a= 5.4308 Å). Refinements of indexed reflections led to the following parameters: a=5.7531(3)Å, b=8.5201(4)Å, c=6.5781(3)Å, space group Cmcm, Z =4, Dx=4.733 g/cm3, Dm=4.65 g/cm3. The Smith–Snyder figure-of-merit is F30=201.4 (0.004, 34).

Novel compounds Ca8−xPbxZnBi(VO4)7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5) solid solution with the whitlockite-type structure were synthesized by a standard solid-state method. The unit-cell parameters were determined by X-ray powder diffraction and using Le Bail decomposition. The crystal structural of Ca6.5Pb1.5ZnBi(VO4)7 was refined by Rietveld method. It is found that Pb2+ cations occupy a half of the M3 site, whereas the M1 and M2 sites are predominantly occupied by calcium with admixture of Bi3+ cations. The M5 site is fully occupied by Zn2+ cations. The M4 site in the structure of studied sample remains vacant and does not participate in the cations arrangement. Optical second harmonic generation demonstrates high non-linear optical activity. Dielectric investigations confirm polar space group R3c. Changes in the non-linear optical and ferroelectric parameters are matched with lead and zinc cation distribution over the sites of the whitlockite-type structure.

We report on the analysis of virtual powder-diffraction patterns from serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) data collected at an X-ray free-electron laser. Different approaches to binning and normalizing these patterns are discussed with respect to the microstructural characteristics which each highlights. Analysis of SFX data from a powder of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 in this way finds evidence of other trace phases in its microstructure which was not detectable in a standard powder-diffraction measurement. Furthermore, a comparison between two virtual powder pattern integration strategies is shown to yield different diffraction peak broadening, indicating sensitivity to different types of microstrain. This paper is a first step in developing new data analysis methods for microstructure characterization from serial crystallography data.

This paper describes a new flow-through capillary sample holder that allows the in situ study of re-solvation processes. The holder can be aligned to the goniometer's center using two perpendicular micrometric tables that move in y and z directions. The re-solvation of two ibrutinib solvates of anisole and fluorobenzene was tested using the holder to show the practical application of this technique.

Commercial dutasteride crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121 (#19), with a = 7.587 44(3), b = 9.960 80(5), c = 33.500 42(12) Å, V = 2531.862(17) Å3, and Z = 4. The structure was solved and refined using synchrotron powder diffraction data, Rietveld, and density functional techniques. The most prominent feature of the structure is a zigzag chain of strong N–H···O = C hydrogen bonds along the a-axis. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in future releases of the Powder Diffraction File™.

In this paper, X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for bisacodyl, C22H19NO4, are reported [a = 9.081(3) Å, b = 10.631(5) Å, c = 11.549(6) Å, α = 111.492(4)°, β = 108.082(3)°, γ = 101.501(3)°, unit-cell volume V = 922.368 Å3, Z = 2, and space group P-1]. All measured lines were indexed, and no detectable impurity was observed.

Three spinel materials were prepared and characterized by in situ powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) techniques to track their phase changes that occurred in the typical batch synthesis process from a sol–gel mixture to the final crystalline spinel oxide. The materials were also characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, whereby the materials decomposition mechanisms that were observed as the precursor, was gradually heated to the final oxide. The results showed that all the materials achieved their total weight loss at about 400 °C. The in situ PXRD analysis showed the progression of the phase transitions where certain of the materials changed from a crystalline precursor to an amorphous intermediate phase and finally to the spinel cathode oxide (Li1.03Mg0.2Mn1.77O4). For other materials, the precursor would start as an amorphous phase and upon heating, convert into an impure intermediate phase (Mn2O3) before forming the final spinel oxide (Li1.03Mn1.97O4). On the other hand, the LiAl0.4Mn1.6O4 would start with an amorphous precursor, with no intermediate phases and immediately formed the final spinel oxide phase. The in situ PXRD study also showed the increases in the materials respective lattice parameters of the crystalline unit cells upon heating and the significant increases in their crystallite sizes when heated above 600 °C.

Two novel compounds, 3-[1-(2-fluoro-4-biphenyl)ethyl]-6-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole (C23H16F2N4S) (1) and 3-[1-(2-fluoro-4-biphenyl)ethyl]-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole (C23H16ClFN4S) (2), have been designed and synthesized as cytotoxic agents. The compounds were characterized by infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectral data, elemental analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. The present study comprises spectral data and crystal structures of these novel compounds determined from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. The structure solutions were obtained by simulated annealing. The final structures were achieved by Rietveld refinement using soft restraints for all bond lengths, bond angles, and planar groups. Both compounds crystallize in space group $P\bar 1$, Z = 2, with the unit-cell parameters a = 6.37433(9), b = 11.3641(2), c = 14.09115(19) Å, α = 80.1740(8)°, β = 85.1164(8)°, γ = 80.9831(10)°, V = 991.55(3) Å3 of compound (1) and a = 6.53736(6), b = 11.55725(15), c = 14.01373(13) Å, α = 80.3323(7)°, β = 84.8939(6)°, γ = 79.3954(8)°, V = 1024.08(2) Å3 of compound (2). Structural analyses reveal that the title compounds are isostructural.

A computer program for refining anomalous scattering factors using x-ray powder diffraction data was revised on the basis of the latest version of a versatile pattern-fitting system, RIETAN-2000. The effectiveness of the resulting program was confirmed by applying it to simulated and measured powder-diffraction patterns of Mn3O4 taken at a synchrotron light source.

A simple ashing procedure for a mixture containing kaolinite and chrysotile is described that converts kaolinite to amorphous metakaolinite while retaining the diffraction intensity of chrysotile. This ashing procedure removes the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern overlap between kaolinite and chrysotile that can interfere with the analysis of even high concentrations of chrysotile. Samples are ashed at 460 °C in a muffle furnace for 40 h to completely convert kaolinite to metakaolinite. The complete conversion of 1 g of kaolinite under these conditions was determined for two standard kaolinite samples from Georgia, KGa-1 and KGa-2. Two of the most common types of commercial chrysotile, long-fiber Canadian and short-fiber Californian chrysotile, are demonstrated to retain diffraction intensity after ashing at 460 °C. Both chrysotile samples have the same integrated intensity for the (002) reflection prior to ashing, although the peak breadths for the two samples are quite different. Ashing at 480 and 500 °C reduces the diffraction intensities of both chrysotile samples by 15%, and broadens the peaks by approximately 3%. Using the prescribed ashing procedure and x-ray diffraction with an internal corundum standard, two kaolinite-bearing building materials containing chrysotile near 0.01 mass fraction were analyzed. The ashing procedure has additional advantages in reducing some samples to powders and removing volatile components, thereby eliminating some sample preparation procedures and concentrating any chrysotile present in the sample. The removal of volatile components improves the sensitivity of XRD analysis to concentrations below 0.01 mass fraction chrysotile.

Li0.5M0.25TiOAsO4 (M=Mg,Co,Ni,Zn) oxyarsenates powders were prepared by coprecipitation method from dilute solution of Li2CO3,M(NO3)2×H2O (M=Mg,Co,Ni,Zn), (NH4)H2AsO4 and TiCl4 in ethanol. The resulting powders, obtained after drying at about 60 °C, were heated progressively with intermittent grindings at 200 °C–750 °C in air. These new compounds crystallize in the monoclinic system with space group P21∕c. Their parameters are functions of M2+ ion size.

Differences between up-cut and down-cut grinding are usually not considered since both modes are alternating during conventional face grinding. Nevertheless, there is a pronounced distinction in the fashion of material removal which could lead to unequal states of surface residual stress. By means of X-ray diffraction analysis, ground plates made from three types of steel were investigated in order to compute and compare both macroscopic and microscopic residual stress and domains of coherent scattering. With respect to the main sources of residual stress generation, i.e., plastic and thermal deformation, machining process was carried out in two types of cooling environment. The results indicate significant influence of heat removal since differences between the two grinding modes are virtually nonexistent for liquid cooling, whereas dry grinding results in higher compressive normal residual stresses for down-cut mode in comparison to the up cut.

The 3-[1-(6-methoxy-2-naphtyl)ethyl]-6-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-7H-1,2,4-triazolo[3,4-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazine, C23H18Cl2N4OS compound was synthesized, as a member of the family of novel potential anticancer agents. The structure of the title compound was characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis, previously. In this study, the crystal structure of this compound has been determined from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data. The crystal structure was solved by simulated annealing and the final structure was achieved by Rietveld refinement method using soft restrains on all interatomic bond lengths and angles. This compound crystallizes in space group P21, Z = 2, with the unit-cell parameters a = 15.55645(11) Å, b = 8.61693(6) Å, c = 8.56702(6) Å, β = 104.3270(4)°, and V = 1112.68(1) Å3. In the crystal structure, strong C−H⋯π and weak intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions link the molecules into a three-dimensional network. The molecules are in a head-to-head arrangement in the unit cell.
