The Executive Council met at the Hotel Pennsylvania, New York, N. Y., on April 19 and 20, 1941, in three sessions: 2:30–6:00 p.m.; 8:00–10:30 p.m.; and 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. All members were present except Professor Schevill (for whom Professor Carleton Brown proxied), and Professor Bradley after the first session.

In seiner Auswahl aus den hochdeutschen Dichtern des dreizehnten Jahrhunderts (Berlin, 1820) hat Lachmann die methodische Textkritik deutscher Werke des Mittelalters begründet. Er forderte, von Benecke angeregt und durch textkritische Arbeit an klassischen Autoren geschult, daβ man zuerst auf Grund des gesamten erhaltenen Materials die echteste Überlieferung bestimme (recensio) und darauf dann eine systematische, nach dem Wert der einzelnen Handschriften abwägende Konjekturalkritik aufbaue (emendatio). Die sprachliche Form aber suchte er durch eingehende Reimstudien zu regeln,—doch war es bedenklich, daβ er sich dabei fast ausschlieβlich auf oberdeutsche, speziell alemannische Handschriften berief und auf eine möglichst altertümliche Rechtschreibung ausging.

William James, in his Varieties of Religious Experience, makes the following statement:

Lyric poetry and music are alive and significant only in proportion as they fetch these vague vistas of a life continuous with our own, beckoning and inviting, yet ever eluding our pursuit. We are alive or dead to the eternal inner message of the arts according as we have kept or lost this mystical susceptibility.

The sharp division, not to say chaos, of opinion on whether the native English suffix -dom is dead or is active and freely available for forming nouns is illustrated by the following thirteen representative views, all but one of which are of the twentieth century.

In a recent article, Wordsworth and De Quincey in Westmorland Politics, 1818, Professor John Edwin Wells has ably presented with his usual thoroughness an important chapter in the political campaign of 1818 in which Wordsworth and De-Quincey played an important role. On p. 1084 Professor Wells remarks: “Hitherto only the pamphlet Two Addresses to the Freeholders of Westmorland, with his own mention of newspaper publication of parts of it, and two letters to the Chronicle, have been securely assigned to him” [Wordsworth]. Some years ago Mr. Thomas J. Wise in his Ashley Library showed me a speech published as a pamphlet which he was convinced was also written by Wordsworth. I was able to give it only a hurried examination at the time without reaching any conclusion, and so far as I know the authorship has never been discussed.
