In this paper we present a new computationally efficient numerical scheme for the minimizing flow for the computation of the optimal L2 mass transport mapping using the fluid approach. We review the method and discuss its numerical properties. We then derive a new scaleable, efficient discretization and a solution technique for the problem and show that the problem is equivalent to a mixed form formulation of a nonlinear fluid flow in porous media. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using a number of numerical experiments.

An efficient multigrid solver for the Oseen problems discretized by Marker and Cell (MAC) scheme on staggered grid is developed in this paper. Least squares commutator distributive Gauss-Seidel (LSC-DGS) relaxation is generalized and developed for Oseen problems. Residual overweighting technique is applied to further improve the performance of the solver and a defect correction method is suggested to improve the accuracy of the discretization. Some numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed solver.

Upon a set of backward orthogonal polynomials, we propose a novel multi-step numerical scheme for solving the decoupled forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs). Under Lipschtiz conditions on the coefficients of the FBSDEs, we first get a general error estimate result which implies zero-stability of the proposed scheme, and then we further prove that the convergence rate of the scheme can be of high order for Markovian FBSDEs. Some numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed multi-step scheme and to numerically verify the theoretical results.

We analyze here, a two-grid finite element method for the two dimensional time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with non-smooth initial data. It involves solving the non-linear Navier-Stokes problem on a coarse grid of size H and solving a Stokes problem on a fine grid of size h, h « H. This method gives optimal convergence for velocity in H1-norm and for pressure in L2-norm. The analysis mainly focuses on the loss of regularity of the solution at t = 0 of the Navier-Stokes equations.

In many applications, the Gaussian convolution is approximately computed by means of recursive filters, with a significant improvement of computational efficiency. We are interested in theoretical and numerical issues related to such an use of recursive filters in a three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3Dvar) scheme as it appears in the software OceanVar. In that context, the main numerical problem consists in solving large linear systems with high efficiency, so that an iterative solver, namely the conjugate gradient method, is equipped with a recursive filter in order to compute matrix-vector multiplications that in fact are Gaussian convolutions. Here we present an error analysis that gives effective bounds for the perturbation on the solution of such linear systems, when is computed by means of recursive filters. We first prove that such a solution can be seen as the exact solution of a perturbed linear system. Then we study the related perturbation on the solution and we demonstrate that it can be bounded in terms of the difference between the two linear operators associated to the Gaussian convolution and the recursive filter, respectively. Moreover, we show through numerical experiments that the error on the solution, which exhibits a kind of edge effect, i.e. most of the error is localized in the first and last few entries of the computed solution, is due to the structure of the difference of the two linear operators.

We introduce a multiple interval Chebyshev-Gauss-Lobatto spectral collocation method for the initial value problems of the nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODES). This method is easy to implement and possesses the high order accuracy. In addition, it is very stable and suitable for long time calculations. We also obtain the hp-version bound on the numerical error of the multiple interval collocation method under H 1-norm. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical expectations.

In this paper, we discuss the blowup of Volterra integro-differential equations (VIDEs) with a dissipative linear term. To overcome the fluctuation of solutions, we establish a Razumikhin-type theorem to verify the unboundedness of solutions. We also introduce leaving-times and arriving-times for the estimation of the spending-times of solutions to ∞. Based on these two typical techniques, the blowup and global existence of solutions to VIDEs with local and global integrable kernels are presented. As applications, the critical exponents of semi-linear Volterra diffusion equations (SLVDEs) on bounded domains with constant kernel are generalized to SLVDEs on bounded domains and ℝN with some local integrable kernels. Moreover, the critical exponents of SLVDEs on both bounded domains and the unbounded domain ℝN are investigated for global integrable kernels.

In this paper, we introduce a diffuse interface model for describing the dynamics of mixtures involving multiple (two or more) phases. The coupled hydrodynamical system is derived through an energetic variational approach. The total energy of the system includes the kinetic energy and the mixing (interfacial) energies. The least action principle (or the principle of virtual work) is applied to derive the conservative part of the dynamics, with a focus on the reversible part of the stress tensor arising from the mixing energies. The dissipative part of the dynamics is then introduced through a dissipation function in the energy law, in line with Onsager's principle of maximum dissipation. The final system, formed by a set of coupled time-dependent partial differential equations, reflects a balance among various conservative and dissipative forces and governs the evolution of velocity and phase fields. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model, a few two-dimensional simulations have been carried out, including (1) the force balance at the three-phase contact line in equilibrium, (2) a rising bubble penetrating a fluid-fluid interface, and (3) a solid particle falling in a binary fluid. The effects of slip at solid surface have been examined in connection with contact line motion and a pinch-off phenomenon.

The fourth order average vector field (AVF) method is applied to solve the “Good” Boussinesq equation. The semi-discrete system of the “good” Boussinesq equation obtained by the pseudo-spectral method in spatial variable, which is a classical finite dimensional Hamiltonian system, is discretizated by the fourth order average vector field method. Thus, a new high order energy conservation scheme of the “good” Boussinesq equation is obtained. Numerical experiments confirm that the new high order scheme can preserve the discrete energy of the “good” Boussinesq equation exactly and simulate evolution of different solitary waves well.

This paper is concerned with numerical method for a two-dimensional time-dependent cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The approximations are obtained by the Galerkin finite element method in space in conjunction with the backward Euler method and the Crank-Nicolson method in time, respectively. We prove optimal L2 error estimates for two fully discrete schemes by using elliptic projection operator. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify our theoretical results.

Sign truncated matching pursuit (STrMP) algorithm is presented in this paper. STrMP is a new greedy algorithm for the recovery of sparse signals from the sign measurement, which combines the principle of consistent reconstruction with orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP). The main part of STrMP is as concise as OMP and hence STrMP is simple to implement. In contrast to previous greedy algorithms for one-bit compressed sensing, STrMP only need to solve a convex and unconstrained subproblem at each iteration. Numerical experiments show that STrMP is fast and accurate for one-bit compressed sensing compared with other algorithms.

A new algorithm for the removal of additive uncorrelated Gaussian noise from a digital image is presented. The algorithm is based on a data driven methodology for the adaptive thresholding of wavelet coefficients. This methodology is derived from higher order statistics of the residual image, and requires no a priori estimate of the level of noise contamination of an image.

This article is intended to fill in the blank of the numerical schemes with second-order convergence accuracy in time for nonlinear Stokes’ first problem for a heated generalized second grade fluid with fractional derivative. A linearized difference scheme is proposed. The time fractional-order derivative is discretized by second-order shifted and weighted Gr¨unwald-Letnikov difference operator. The convergence accuracy in space is improved by performing the average operator. The presented numerical method is unconditionally stable with the global convergence order of in maximum norm, where τ and h are the step sizes in time and space, respectively. Finally, numerical examples are carried out to verify the theoretical results, showing that our scheme is efficient indeed.

This paper is devoted to the American option pricing problem governed by the Black-Scholes equation. The existence of an optimal exercise policy makes the problem a free boundary value problem of a parabolic equation on an unbounded domain. The optimal exercise boundary satisfies a nonlinear Volterra integral equation and is solved by a high-order collocation method based on graded meshes. This free boundary is then deformed to a fixed boundary by the front-fixing transformation. The boundary condition at infinity (due to the fact that the underlying asset's price could be arbitrarily large in theory), is treated by the perfectly matched layer technique. Finally, the resulting initial-boundary value problems for the option price and some of the Greeks on a bounded rectangular space-time domain are solved by a finite element method. In particular, for Delta, one of the Greeks, we propose a discontinuous Galerkin method to treat the discontinuity in its initial condition. Convergence results for these two methods are analyzed and several numerical simulations are provided to verify these theoretical results.

In this paper, we present a local Fourier analysis framework for analyzing the different components within multigrid solvers for edge-based discretizations on triangular grids. The different stencils associated with edges of different orientation in a triangular mesh make this analysis special. The resulting tool is demonstrated for the vector Laplace problem discretized by mimetic finite difference schemes. Results from the local Fourier analysis, as well as experimentally obtained results, are presented to validate the proposed analysis.

We focus on the study of multigrid methods with aggressive coarsening and polynomial smoothers for the solution of the linear systems corresponding to finite difference/element discretizations of the Laplace equation. Using local Fourier analysis we determine automatically the optimal values for the parameters involved in defining the polynomial smoothers and achieve fast convergence of cycles with aggressive coarsening. We also present numerical tests supporting the theoretical results and the heuristic ideas. The methods we introduce are highly parallelizable and efficient multigrid algorithms on structured and semi-structured grids in two and three spatial dimensions.

The computation of integrals in higher dimensions and on general domains, when no explicit cubature rules are known, can be ”easily” addressed by means of the quasi-Monte Carlo method. The method, simple in its formulation, becomes computationally inefficient when the space dimension is growing and the integration domain is particularly complex. In this paper we present two new approaches to the quasi-Monte Carlo method for cubature based on nonnegative least squares and approximate Fekete points. The main idea is to use less points and especially good points for solving the system of the moments. Good points are here intended as points with good interpolation properties, due to the strict connection between interpolation and cubature. Numerical experiments show that, in average, just a tenth of the points should be used mantaining the same approximation order of the quasi-Monte Carlo method. The method has been satisfactory applied to 2 and 3-dimensional problems on quite complex domains.

A shifted Laplacian operator is obtained from the Helmholtz operator by adding a complex damping. It serves as a basic tool in the most successful multigrid approach for solving highly indefinite Helmholtz equations — a Shifted Laplacian preconditioner for Krylov-type methods. Such preconditioning significantly accelerates Krylov iterations, much more so than the multigrid based on original Helmholtz equations. In this paper, we compare approximation and relaxation properties of the Helmholtz operator with and without the complex shift, and, based on our observations, propose a new hybrid approach that combines the two. Our analytical conclusions are supported by two-dimensional numerical results.

In this paper, we propose to use the interior functions of an hierarchical basis for high order BDMp elements to enforce the divergence-free condition of a magnetic field B approximated by the H(div)BDMp basis. The resulting constrained finite element method can be used to solve magnetic induction equation in MHD equations. The proposed procedure is based on the fact that the scalar (p–1)-th order polynomial space on each element can be decomposed as an orthogonal sum of the subspace defined by the divergence of the interior functions of the p-th order BDMp basis and the constant function. Therefore, the interior functions can be used to remove element-wise all higher order terms except the constant in the divergence error of the finite element solution of the B-field. The constant terms from each element can be then easily corrected using a first order H(div) basis globally. Numerical results for a 3-D magnetic induction equation show the effectiveness of the proposed method in enforcing divergence-free condition of the magnetic field.

This paper presents a relatively simple numerical method to investigate the flow and heat transfer of laminar power-law fluids over a semi-infinite plate in the presence of viscous dissipation and anisotropy radiation. On one hand, unlike most classical works, the effects of power-law viscosity on velocity and temperature fields are taken into account when both the dynamic viscosity and the thermal diffusivity vary as a power-law function. On the other hand, boundary layer equations are derived by Taylor expansion, and a mixed analytical/numerical method (a pseudosimilarity method) is proposed to effectively solve the boundary layer equations. This method has been justified by comparing its results with those of the original governing equations obtained by a finite element method. These results agree very well especially when the Reynolds number is large. We also observe that the robustness and accuracy of the algorithm are better when thermal boundary layer is thinner than velocity boundary layer.
