This study aims to create controlled fine space by electrospinning, and to develop the electrode materials for high-performance energy devices. With the popularization of mobile devices, household appliances, hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, and the like, the use of power storage devices is expanding, and further performance improvements are required. In this study, a novel electrode material was developed by compositing Si with carbon nanofibers derived from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) by electrospinning and heat treatment. The texture and structure of the nanofibers were observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with image processing. Nano spaces were created in the CNFs and Si particles were able to be contained in the CNFs. In the second and subsequent cycles of the charge/discharge experiments of lithium ion battery (LIB) electrode made from the materials, the capacity was more than twice the theoretical capacity using graphite, and good cycle performance was obtained.

The most promising candidate as an everyday alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). This is not only due to Na abundance, but also because the main principles and cell structure are very similar to LIBs. Due to these benefits, NIBs are expected to be used in applications related to large-scale energy storage systems and other applications not requiring top-performance in terms of volumetric capacity. One important issue that has hindered the large scale application of NIBs is the anode material. Graphite and silicon, which have been widely applied as anodes in NIBs, do not show great performance. Hard carbons look very promising in terms of their abundance and low cost, but they tend to suffer from instability, in particular over the long term. In this work we explore a carbon-coated TiO2 nanoparticle system that looks very promising in terms of stability, abundance, low-cost, and most importantly that safety of the cell, since it does not suffer from potential sodium plating during cycling. Maintaining a nano-size and consistent morphology of the active material is a crucial parameter for maintaining a well-functioning cell upon cycling. In this work we applied Anomalous Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (ASAXS) for the first time at the Ti K-edge of TiO2 anatase nanoparticles on different cycled composite electrodes in order to have a complete morphological overview of the modifications induced by sodiation and desodiation. This work also demonstrates for the first time that the nanosize of the TiO2 is maintained upon cycling, which is in agreement with the electrochemical stability.

Iron aluminide intermetallic alloys are of great importance in many industries due to their excellent oxidation resistance, low cost, low density, resistance to corrosion and good ductility at room temperature. However, these alloys suffer limited room temperature ductility above 873 K. In this paper, a molecular dynamics-based LAMMPS-EAM was used to model Fe50-XMXAl doped systems with either Ag, Pt or Pd. The lattice side preferences of the dopant were deduced from their energy landscape, and Fe sub-lattices showed promising properties. It was found that the addition of Ag, Pt and Pd enhances the stability of Fe50-XMXAl composition. More importantly, Ag and Pd doped systems gave comparable transition temperatures to experimental findings of 1273 K and 1073 K, respectively. Their thermodynamic and the mechanical stability trends showed promising properties for industrial applications, displaying stability at a high temperature below 1300 K.

Bolometric arrays dominate in commercial terahertz and millimeter wave imagers. Bolometers tend to be slow and require an operating bias that increases the power budget. This paper presents first results on antenna-coupled thermo-electric junction detectors, a potentially attractive alternative to microbolometers. The nanoscale junctions have small thermal mass and can be much faster than bolometers. These junctions are heated by currents excited in spectrally-selective antennas and generate a voltage based on the Seebeck effect without any externally applied power. A pixel comprising a series array of antenna coupled junctions with peak response at 7.5 THz (40 μm wavelength) is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Responsivity of 5 MV/W, 500 Hz chopping frequency, and D* of 3.5 x 1010 Jones are demonstrated.

The characteristics of earth cement blocks depend on soil composition, grading of the soil, cement-soil ratio and water content, etc… In the present study, an experimental program is conducted to evaluate the influence of soil grading in the mechanical properties of earth cement blocks. Five gradings of soil used for the preparation of earth cement blocks. Soil grading effect on following properties of earth-cement blocks such as block density, compressive strength in wet and dry condition, flexural tensile strength in wet and dry condition, and water absorption was compared. Results show that the properties of the earth cement blocks are dependent upon the fine content and uniformity coefficient of the soil. The increase in the finer content in mortar improves water absorption, compressive strength and flexural tensile strength.

Data-driven materials design informed by legacy data-sets can enable the education of a new workforce, promote openness of the scientific process in the community, and advance our physical understanding of complex material systems. The performance of structural materials, which are controlled by competing factors of composition, grain size, particle size/distribution, residual strain, cannot be modelled with single-mechanism physics. The design of optimal processing route must account for the coupled nature of the creation of such factors, and requires students to learn machine learning and statistical modelling principles not taught in the conventional undergraduate or graduate level Materials Science and Engineering curricula. Therefore, modified curricula with opportunities for experiential learning are paramount for workforce development. Projects with real-world data provide an opportunity for students to establish fluency in the iterative steps needed to solve relevant scientific and engineering process design questions.

Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements were made on near physiological solutions of a bottlebrush shape polyelectrolyte, aggrecan. Aggrecan is a biologically important molecule whose complexes with hyaluronic acid (HA) provide the osmotic resistance of cartilage. We have investigated the effect of complexation of aggrecan with HA on the structure and dynamic properties of aggrecan solutions. SANS reveals that the supramolecular structure of aggrecan assemblies is only marginally affected by the HA. DLS indicates that the dynamic response of the aggrecan-HA complex is slower than that of the corresponding aggrecan solution. However, addition of calcium ions slightly increases the relaxation rate of the autocorrelation function of the aggrecan solution.

Machine learning-based approach is desired for accelerating materials design, development and discovery in combination with high-throughput experiments and simulation. In this work, we propose to apply a Bayesian optimization method to design ultrathin multilayer tungsten-silicon carbide (W-SiC) nanocomposite absorber for high-temperature solar power generation. Based on a semi-analytical scattering matrix method, the design of spectrally selective absorber is optimized over a variety of layer thicknesses to maximize the overall solar absorptance. Our nanofabrication and experimental characterization results demonstrate the capability of the proposed approach for accelerated development of refractory light-absorbing materials. Comparison with other global optimization methods, such as random search, simulated annealing and particle swarm optimization, shows that the Bayesian optimization method can expedite the design of multilayer nanocomposite absorbers and significantly reduce the development cost. This work sheds light on the discovery of novel materials for solar energy and sustainability applications.

Sensitive and selective detection for cancer biomarkers is critical in cancer clinical diagnostics. In this work, we report an electrochemical detection platform for the carbohydrate antigen tumor marker 15-3 (CA15-3). It is based on a composite material of poly [2-methoxy-5- (2-ethylhexyloxy) -1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), which deposited as active layer of an organic thin-film transistor. This layer was surface functionalized with the Anti-CA15-3 monoclonal antibody. The devices have a favorable electrical output response for VSD source-drain potentials between 0 to 5 volts, and VG as 8 volts. Once the antigen (CA15-3) is recognized by the antibody, the electrical response is diminished. The test has a linear response in the concentration range of 0–30 U mL - 1 of CA 15–3, with a lower detection limit of ~1 U mL - 1 and a stability of 90% with respect to the initial values after storing the device for two weeks. The method was successfully applied to the determination of CA15-3 in serum samples. Possibly, this used composite material has a greater scope and can be applied to another type of detection scheme.

Using palladium for hydrogen storage requires palladium (Pd) particles exhibiting specific parameters, including surface area, particle size, and particle shape, with increased interest in palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). In order to routinely monitor the synthesis of these particles a spectroscopic method is being developed using infrared (IR), Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. By monitoring the production of Pd NPs, the growth of the NPs can be controlled to ensure quality of the product to match the desired finished particle specifications. For the reaction presented, the conversion of the intermediate tetraamminepalladium(II) chloride (PTC) to diamminepalladium(II) chloride (PDC) can influence the Pd NPs properties. This study is first being developed in lab bench scale quantities to allow ultimate control of the Pd NPs.

Since the launch of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) the field of materials informatics (MI) emerged to remove the bottlenecks limiting the pathway towards rapid materials discovery. Although the machine learning (ML) and optimization techniques underlying MI were developed well over a decade ago, programs such as the MGI encouraged researchers to make the technical advancements that make these tools suitable for the unique challenges in materials science and engineering. Overall, MI has seen a remarkable rate in adoption over the past decade. However, for the continued growth of MI, the educational challenges associated with applying data science techniques to analyse materials science and engineering problems must be addressed. In this paper, we will discuss the growing use of materials informatics in academia and industry, highlight the need for educational advances in materials informatics, and discuss the implementation of a materials informatics course into the curriculum to jump-start interested students with the skills required to succeed in materials informatics projects.

This work analyzes the effect of rare earth additions to an Inconel 718 superalloy; for this purpose, two 8 kg ingots of a commercial composition of Inconel 718 were made in a vacuum induction furnace. One of them (In718) with the base composition and the other one (In718RE) with an addition of 0.04wt% of mischmetal (rare earths alloy based on cerium and lanthanum). Both alloys were cast into metallic molds into the vacuum chamber and let to solidify. The alloys were then solubilized for two hours at 1155 °C to eliminate deleterious phases, rolled at 1100 °C to get a reduction of 50% in thickness, then aged for 16 hours at 720 °C and 620 °C by 8 hours each. A complete microstructural characterization was undertaken by optical and electronic (SEM and TEM) microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Mechanical characterization was done by hardness tests, tensile and Charpy impact tests. Results show a slight improvement of the tensile and hardness values for the alloy with rare earth additions. However, no notorious difference was observed during the impact tests, since both alloys show the same values. These mechanical results are discussed in terms of the obtained microstructure. Both alloys are mainly composed by γ, γ´, γ´´ and carbides. It was observed that primary carbides nucleate rare earth particles; therefore, higher number of carbides and of larger size (according to a size distribution) are observed in the alloy with rare earth additions. The presence of such carbides prevents the grain growth during the thermomechanical processing which in turn improve the mechanical properties.

‘Negative mechanical materials / metamaterials’ refer to materials and/or engineered systems that exhibit anomalous macroscopic thermo-mechanical properties that emerge due to the structure of their subunits, rather than the specific chemical composition. As a result of their design/construction, they may exhibit anomalous macroscopic properties such as zero or negative Poisson’s ratios (auxetic), moduli and/or indices. Such zero/negative properties are not normally manifested by their conventional counterparts and may thus potentially be used in applications where typical materials cannot. This work will look into some of the more recent developments made in this field, focusing on how existing materials (e.g. crystals) are providing the blueprint for the design and manufacture of novel ’negative materials’. In particular, this work looks at how wine-rack like crystalline materials which are typically studied for their negative thermal expansion and/or negative compressibility properties can be modified so as to generate negative Poisson’s ratio through a novel mechanism involving forcing elements to move out-of-plane to generate giant out-of-plane auxeticity.

The Ti-Zr-Ni quasicrystal alloys have prospected to be one of the promising materials for hydrogen storage. This is because this type of quasicrystal contains 140 interstitial sites (T-sites) constituted in the Bergman Cluster that could accommodate hydrogen. The number of available sites is far greater than the number found in regular crystals, therefore the improvement of hydrogen storage capacity could be expected. For this study, we focus on the effect of substitution of Cr, in place of Ni in Ti-Zr-Ni amorphous and quasicrystal alloys. The studied samples are synthesized by the combination of mechanical alloying and sintering process. The subsequent measurements of electrochemical hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are carried out by a three-electrode cell at room temperature. The studied samples are structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction and their morphology is analyzed by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The influence of the 4th substituted element on the possibility of a new-formed Cr quasicrystalline phase and the potential improvement of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics for both amorphous and quasicrystalline phase is evaluated. Our measurements showed the maximum discharge capacity achieved by Ti45Zr38Ni7Cr10 amorphous and Ti45Zr38Ni12Cr5 i-phase electrodes at a current density of 15 mA·g-1 to be 9.8 mAh·g-1and 55.2 mAh·g-1 respectively. The maximum estimated H/M value for the Ti45Zr38Ni12Cr5 i-phase electrode reached 1.36. These results are encouraging and show the merit of the usage of quasicrystals as hydrogen storage materials.

Fresh water production through sustainable approaches such as solar thermal sources is attracting widespread attention. One of the recently developed approaches aims at utilizing black particles to enhance evaporation and steam generation through efficient photo-thermal conversion process in direct solar thermal desalination systems. Activated carbon serves as one such material for meeting the objectives of freshwater production with negligible increments in cost of the overall system. A series of chemical and physical characterizations were performed to explore the possibility of using activated carbon as a stable carbon source. Optical characterization showed granular activated carbon to have 96.35% solar absorptance and its dispersion in water to have less than 1.5% transmittance (absorbance of 1.85) at 100 mg/L concentration. Outdoor experiments were performed at the University of California-Merced in the month of September (2019), with peak irradiation of 0.8 suns. The comparative measurements showed that the total evaporation enhancement was 38% and 100% for granular activated carbon and activated carbon dispersions, respectively, when compared to pure DI water.

We present a semi-analytical expression for the dielectric response function of quasi-2D ultrathin films of periodically aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes. We derive the response function in terms of the individual nanotube conductivity, plasma frequency, and the volume fraction of carbon nanotubes in the film. The real part of the dielectric response function is negative for a sufficiently wide range of the incident photon energy, indicating that the film behaves as a hyperbolic metamaterial. Inhomogeneous broadening increases the effect.

This work reports the synthesis and characterization of metal-free electrocatalysts made from Brosimum alicastrum waste as the carbon source. The residues were washed and grounded to a fine powder. The thermogravimetric analysis carried out on the raw sample showed that the optimal synthesis temperature is 700 °C. Thus, the raw sample was pyrolyzed at 700 °C and activated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) in a 2:1 ratio (KOH/fine power) to improve its properties. Afterwards, hydrazine was used as the nitrogen source for doping. The physicochemical characteristics of pyrolyzed, activated, and doped carbons were studied and their electrochemical properties were determined using cyclic and linear voltammetry techniques. The electrochemical measurements indicate that the sample doped at 140 °C has an acceptable onset potential (0.854 V vs. RHE), while the one doped at 160 °C shows the highest current density among the synthesized electrocatalysts (2.61 mA cm-2). Although the catalyst performance is lower compared to commercial 20% Pt/C, this biomass precursor favors the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media.

It is pertinent to the safety case for geological disposal in the UK that the behaviour of vitrified wastes in proximity to cementitious materials is understood. In this study, vitrified simulant intermediate level nuclear waste (ILW) was subject to dissolution in a synthetic cement water solution to simulate disposal conditions. Results show that the presence of alkali / alkaline earth elements in the cementitious solution can be favourable, at least in the short-term, leading to lower dissolution rates associated with incorporation of these elements into the altered layer of the glass.

Calcium carbonate is widely used as a filler material in the production of polymer matrix composites and studies have shown that eggshell contains about 94% calcium carbonate. The effect of calcium carbonate from eggshell particles in polypropylene was studied in this work and the result compared with unreinforced polypropylene. Industrially synthesized calcium carbonate/eggshell particles were used as filler in polypropylene matrix with varying mass fractions from 5 to 20 wt. % at 5 wt. % increment. The produced samples were mechanically characterized for indentation hardness and uniaxial tensile properties using a Rockwell hardness tester and universal mechanical testing machine respectively. These properties were measured at different compositions to determine its compositional dependence. Microstructural analysis of the composites top and fracture surface was also carried out using scanning electron microscope to examine possible failure mode. The results were compared to measure the effect of reinforcement and the replacement criteria for the conventional calcium carbonate. The results obtained showed that calcium carbonate reinforced polypropylene has its highest tensile strength, elastic modulus and modulus of rupture at 5 wt. %, ductility and modulus of resilience at 10 wt. %, and hardness at 15 wt. %. The results also showed that granulated eggshell can provided appreciable improvement in the mechanical properties of polypropylene as obtainable in mineral calcium carbonate reinforced polypropylene.

Stabilized earth is a very ancient material that has been used in many countries as a low cost, environment friendly construction material. However, its durability under humid environments is low. Stabilization using cement, lime and natural fibres could enhance its durability and lowers the risk of cracking. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the performance of stabilised local soil by either, cement mixed with a proportion of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) /or straw naturel fibres. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), shrinkage, wetting and drying, capillary absorption and thermal conductivity tests were performed on both untreated soil samples and stabilised soil samples. The results show that stabilising the soil with cement and GBFS increased both compressive strength, durability, thermal conductivity and decreased the capillary absorption and the shrinkage. The addition of natural wheat fibres increased the capillary absorption but leads to a decrease in the thermal conductivity and to a further reduction in the shrinkage and hence a better insulating less prone to cracking material.
